I can understand that when it comes to the nostalgia used in movies these days, it does get overused to the point of over-reliance. And they tend towards drawing reactionary fandoms because there's always a unique past thing to compare the current thing to. It's time to revive Picasso's old dictum that true artists steal. Instead of rebooting these things to financialize corporate-purchased IP, steal what you love about them and make something new.
For me, the cameo of certain characters is probably marketing as they do need to get butts in seats. I imagine that probably going to be the extent of their inclusion.
I distinctly got the impression they had William Atherton for a day and shot one scene. I do honestly hope Winston is in a bit more of it than we see tho. I find old Winston endlessly fascinating for some reason. Maybe it's because I have a lot of affection toward Ernie Hudson (he's been one of my favorite actors since I was a kid) or maybe I just think he kind of gets a lil bit forgotten but whatever the reason, I want more Winston
Great video as always I like this trailer and I am really looking forward to the film but I agree with you the nostalgic elements should not overtake this film as a whole but the concept is awesome let's hope it lands well
I do agree with you while at the same time being excited to see what's up with the new stuff. Basically I'm conflicted. Lol But I will take my spawn to see it in the theater this time. At the very least it looks visually very fun.
I don't know about taking Spawn to a Ghostbusters movie. He might sympathize with the ghosts after all this time as a supernatural demonic entity. I would be careful about that
Look... this whole idea that nostalgia has become a bad thing is total nonsense. When I watch James Bond, I want there to be a "shaken not stirred." When I watch Indy, I want the whip and hat and ALL of the usual stuff. A ghostbusters sequel BETTER provide call backs and be based on all that we love from the movies. I will never understand the hatred for nostalgia.
I don't hate nostalgia. But the cup runneth over. I don't hate pizza either but if every restaurant started pushing pizza at me I'd get pretty sick of it.
Identity is fluid, when people try to force it to into a familiar mold, it turns into tired schtick. YMMV I like if media resonates with what's come before, such as characters, themes, mythos. But cliched catchphrases and re-used scenes feel simultaneously lazy yet try-hard because they are usually an attempt to get a pass by referencing a better-quality work. Taking time and resources out of the new movie to reproduce something that was done better. Same as with remakes - don't try to recapture the lightning in a bottle of what was perfect, instead exploit the untapped potential of what was flawed or incomplete.
For what it's worth, along the lines of what you said, there are a number of things that I didn't see for a while due to marketing trailers. However when I saw it I was like "Well this was misrepresented, pretty good." I hope that is the case here as well.
Just came home after watching this! I loved it so much, it wasnt perfect (bit slow maybe? For me) but it is definitely going to become a favourite of mine!! Cannot wait for your review! I hope you'll like it
Oh get over yourselves. I was in the theaters for the original and have been a fan ever since. This looks fun as hell, and Im looking forward to it. International trailer is good too. It amazes me people just can't be happy anymore.
To be fair it being set in New York has a big emphasis in this movie, the library is in New York, the ghost is still there, that makes sense, Slimer is living in the firehouse, that makes sense. They do seem to be pushing the concepts further with the actual ghost research, idk it doesn’t seem like your being fair.
Having watched the trailer before you, as your pre watch speech continued, I knew you were going to have problems. I am hoping most of the nostalgia is in the trailer.
Yeah, lets hope that this is just a concentrated nostalgic trailer playing on what brought people in for the first trailer. Of course it is all out of context which is the trouble with judging a movie by the trailers. I see a lot of stuff I still liked, and I don't have a problem with Slimer coming back. It makes sense that he would be hanging around the station eating things for all eternity, perhaps he is one of the reasons the station remained unoccupied all these years since I'd imagine that station is worth a lot on the real estate market especially in New York.
Unfortunately this always felt likely because just like Spider-Man and Men In Black this is a Sony property and Sony just can't help themselves. Disney collaborates with them and makes popular Spiderman films and Sony still wants more so they pump out the most generic Spidey aligned spinoffs possible (venom, morbius etc). Ghostbusters Afterlife was a nostalgic film but with a strong heart so it was inevitable Sony would go all in on a sequel with all the subtlety and nuance of a William Shatner monologue. They are the movie studio with the strongest 'we don't know what we're doing' energy.
Maybe we will see more non nostalgia in other trailers coming out. I like seeing the young people in the team and want them to have a future on their own.
I also don't understand this hate for the nostalgia. It's in the same world, continuing the story so you're gonna see familiar characters. And wasn't Slimer always supposed to be living in the firehouse? I dunno. I'm glad we're getting a new ghost. And seems like it's setting up to make more GB movies without leaning on the old stuff.
Ok, i know we have characters we know and love or love to hate. However i dont think its just for nostalgia. The original cast arent just cameos this time. The ogs and the new team are working together as the baddie is that terrifying they need all the help they can get. I also have a feeling they were at the library for research purposes and the library ghost possibly a manifestation of Ray's fear which The main baddie feeds off of. I get slimer though. He's probably been hiding and living in the attic of the firehouse for the past 30 odd years, so you can't not have him as everyone wants to see him and we're unhappy he wasn't in Afterlife. You should check out the international trailer, as there is less nostalgia and its more of a scary vibe.
I could go for more Ernie Hudson; but I did have a disappointed reaction to this trailer, seeing that they were supposed to be moving away from the old guard
Well the return of Walter peck was spoiled months ago with leaked set photos of him on set so for a lot of its only a shock they made him the mayor as the trailer implies they did
I want to see Ray running his occult book shop, Winston running the company as CEO, more of the "new team" and the new Ice Demon / Ghost thing. Don't mind Slimer getting a scene lurking about somewhere. I'm 50/50 on Venkman being back in this - I think there are more interesting characters I'd rather get more time with & don't really feel much need for him to turn up and crack a few jokes right at the end of the film. Peck, the Marshmallow men & the library Ghosts actively put me off. Although Peck does have some believability in still being a city official who doesn't care for the Ghostbusters based on past events in the film series - but it's too much retreading of old ground for me.
I think the only other time a ghost killed someone in these movies was Bill Murray in the 2016 reboot, but yeah the idea of ghost being very threatening is cool, I don't really care that they're doing the nostalgia thing I think that's more for marketing to get people excited because nostalgia is a hell of a drug but the international trailer was a lot better, like there's a shot at the very end of it that I love that shows most (they're missing like two people) of the ghostbusters old and new just standing together and man seing a team of ghostbusters with like around 10 or 11 people is just awesome to me and what I've always wanted to see from ghostbusters after the first one. A big team, a unit of diverse people coming together to save the world and fight ghost, I can't wait for this film. Sidenote I think you meant J.K. Simmons not J.J. Abrams lol.
You should watch the international trailer It is a far better trailer I think you will enjoy it much better. Pretty much every reactor so far or a good portion of them that have reacted to this trailer. Have had to redo there video or make a new one reacting to the International trailer. Because for whatever reason, they release too completely, different trailers that actually are different. In tone and everything
5:25 It is a special kind of frustrating when a movie is not only bad, but it shows you really good aspects. Like "Yeah, we could've done something great and fun with this. We just decided not to"
I was kinda meh on this movie til this trailer, now I'm psyched. This trailer makes me want to see it when before i was like "eh maybe when its on streaming".
The containment unit is huge in the research centre. It has smaller 'containment cages' where ghosts can be studied, hence the callback ghosts. The rumours of Vigos appearance now make sense with this. Peck is expected to be Mayor, hence his resentment and appearance. I think your criticism is mis-focused. Instead why are lucky and podcast in it? It makes NO sense why 2 kids are allowed to move from Oklahoma to New York to be with the dirt farmers family who they barely know. More to the point.. where is Oscar Barrett?? If ANYONE was nailed on to be a Ghostbuster it was him yet he is completely side-stepped. Many questions need answered. Watch the International trailer, it may change your mind, its infinately better
4:39 I related to the frustration here so much. Refrences and similarities in remakes/sequals/so forth that don't match up because of different context or just feels too shoehorned in bug me like nothing else. Takes me completely out of the experience as badly as if the creators paused the film (or added an authors note) to show up and say "hey, hey, see what we did there? We know you did and you love it dont you." Know, I dont like it. Obnoxious cameos are also a pet peeve for me. I preffer the blink and you'll miss it type, placed like any old extra, or where the person is so covered incostume they are almost unrecognizable.
So you hate this movie for doing the opposite of what the last movie did that you hate??? I mean if you're not even going to try and enjoy it then maybe don't waste your time...
My concern isn't so much what's in this trailer (though I think what you're saying is totally valid and I'm with you). The fact you have all these additional characters played by comedians on top of the Spengler family on top of the original Ghostbusters needs to be carefully handled or you get one of those over-stuffed sequels that mistakes quantity of comedic people for quality.
I don’t mind a few callbacks in the movie but when a good majority of the movie is Nostalgia bait then it becomes a problem and from what I have heard about the movie so far it feels like a mostly original plot with a never before seen villain but even though I don’t mind Walter peck back I don’t want him actually retreading plot points of the first 2 movies where someone is trying to make the ghostbusters look like crockpots but still having his disbelief in them is ok cause it it would he never go over his disbelief in them and J.K. Simmons was Ivo Shandor in afterlife not J.J. Abrams
Sounds like you're hoping for Episode IV: The Last Ghostbuster, but you're being offered Episode IV: The Rise of Ghostbuster. P.S. You said "J.J. Abrams as Ivo Shandor". That was J.K. Simmons. Abrams would have actually been a pretty good self-deprecating cameo. P.P.S. They actually used THE "jump scare" noise for Slimer. SLIMER. The least scary ghost. Even Casper is scarier. You know he's hiding something.
I watched the trailer and and soon as we saw who talking to the new ghostbusters I was checked out. I knew they were going just try and hit the same beats as the first movie.
come on you knew they where going to use Member Berries one more time it's just how movies are cause they can't just start fresh after a 35 year where are they now come back
The international trailer is a very different beast to the US trailer. If this is character and nostalgia, the international trailer is the story. Marketing failed the 2016 film in my mind, and perhaps this is a knee-jerk reaction to that?
Dude, it's the trailer, chill... The purpose of this nostalgia shown here is to drag people's asses to the cinema, and most people are down with it. Go to the cinema, watch the film and enjoy yourself.
I was excited by the first trailer for this but yeah, Walter Peck showing back up and seeing Stay Puffed is a disappointment. It makes it feel like they're still relying on the member berries which is what ruined Afterlife for me. Slimer bothers me less because he's pretty much the mascot for the franchise so I just expect him.
I dont get why your getting your knickers in a twist. Nostalgia? Well theres gonna be similarities as its a franchise and a sequel. Slimer. Well slimers been a constant feature from the begininng and throughout. Hes been in every movie, cartoon series and video game. Hes more of a consistent character at this point. Walter peck. Not surprising hes some goverment office job, he was head of EPA and later PEACOCK in the 1st movie and the video game . So a returning side character is not a big issue. Theres a new threat, and a mixture of old and new characters to feel like a sequel whilst moving the story along.
Totally agree with you 100% after all this is the cross over from old to new GBs. I can't understand her winging couldn't listen to her waffle on. They are giving us what we want old and new together the trailer was perfect in my eyes turned back to that 8 year kid again in a 47 year old body
Relying on the past quite heavily doesnt allow a film or franchise to establish more new things. Like imagine if this movie has heavy nostalgic things from movies past and thats basically all it is, you could have spent that time on bringing something new to the table which might be interesting or fail but you dont know until you try. Id rather try new ideas than see the same thing done again and again. Maybe its not like that in the actual film but going off the trailer i have no hopes
I loved Ghostbusters Afterlife. That movie had two jobs. It had to pay tribute to Harold Ramis and prove that Jason Reitman loved and respected the material enough to be trusted to run more projects with it thats why afterlife had so much nostalgia. It was Jason proving his love of Ghostbusters while giving the introductions of the new stuff. I dont understand watching this trailer and saying the movie is gonna be too overloaded with nostalgia. In my opinion it looks really well balanced. Like youre bringing tbe new team to new york and reactivating the brand of course theyre gonna run into a couple familiar faces. Its supposed to be a massive team up movie where the new team isnt getting introduced to the world and the audience, they can now prove their skill and worthiness to continue the name ghostbusters. Im all for it.
I don't remember JJ Abrahms as Evo Shandor. 😂 (That's one hell of a mystery box) (To be fair I was convinced it was Paul Reubens as originally planned in first film)
See, the most infuriating thing is: there are bits in there that could actually make a really good film but this clearly shows that those good aspects are drowned, suffocated and utterly snuffed out by huge, slimy (literally!) gloops of nostalgig re-treadings and fanservice. And honestly, I don't think fanservice is the proper term, because I, as a fan, surely don't feel served by it!
We will just have to agree to disagree on this one. U can't reboot this series without the sprinkles of nostalgia in there. Other that 2016 reboot I don't know how much more away from the original u can get...its a great blend of new and old. You seem super angry at a lot of parts. They're gonna go heavy on nostalgia in the trailer bc well they are. Again we will just have to agree to disagree. I love this. I feel like your dogging on it before it's even been seen.
Ehhh, everything sucks. Let's hope no one makes anything anymore or maybe make something yourself? Naw. Stay home. Don't watch. Don't appreciate. Continue to spread your negativity.
He seems to be worse. His scepticism in the first thing was misplaced but understandable, but the whole "no witnesses" comment is just a complete denial of reality.
@@wendyheatherwoodWell in the first film Peck accused the Ghostbusters of being frauds who used nerve gases to induce hallucinations, and used “fake electronic light shows” to make people think they were catching them, so even in the very beginning he was outright denying them. I mean from the perspective of someone down on the street, the Ghostbusters went into 55 Central Park west, and a while later there was a light show from the top of the building. Stay Puft shows up, and then the top of the building explodes. Peck probably dismissed Stay Puft as a hallucination or projection or something
This better be better than Afterlife, which was pretty mediocre and I like seeing the original cast play bigger roles, Walter Peck returning, and returning to New York.
Yeah. I’m not thrilled with how Ghostbusters is being treated nowadays. Unless they took this franchise in a completely different direction without relying so heavily on any of the original characters or plot elements, I’d probably be more on board.
I can't imagine them not leaning into the nostalgia full throttle in the final product. They tried to tell a new story with Ghostbusters II and failed. They tried to reboot with 2016 and failed. Frankly, Afterlife grossed only marginally more than 2016, but it cost a lot less, and it's the closest thing to not a dismal failure, and all it did was lick the nostalgia balls of the audience. So of course they will run with it and abandon all pretense of effort. They might as well get an AI to write it. I am ready for a new franchise. I had slight hope at the end of Afterlife that they might be handing off the franchise to a new crew, and threw in the old one to stoke peoples' feels and to guide the new crew. I would expect to continue to see them but in a *consulting* and mentoring role for the new crew, i.e. cameos, and not on the goddamn front lines. I am not eager to see geriatrics shoot at ghosts. Though I will say, your reaction was certainly more animated than mine.

Thank u for all your hard work. Keep on the great work 👍🏻
Great video as always I like this trailer and I am really looking forward to the film but I agree with you the nostalgic elements should not overtake this film as a whole but the concept is awesome let's hope it lands well
I do agree with you while at the same time being excited to see what's up with the new stuff. Basically I'm conflicted. Lol
But I will take my spawn to see it in the theater this time.
YMMV
I like if media resonates with what's come before, such as characters, themes, mythos.
JK Simmons was Ivo Shandor not JJ Abrams
To be fair it being set in New York has a big emphasis in this movie, the library is in New York, the ghost is still there, that makes sense, Slimer is living in the firehouse, that makes sense. They do seem to be pushing the concepts further with the actual ghost research, idk it doesn’t seem like your being fair.
Having watched the trailer before you, as your pre watch speech continued, I knew you were going to have problems. I am hoping most of the nostalgia is in the trailer.
The thumbnail said everything, but I watched it anyway.
Money grab much?
Thanks, as always, for the content! 👏
This is someone that would hate a totally original Ghostbusters story.
This film will be a masterpiece.
🚫🥶
I like seeing the young people in the team and want them to have a future on their own.
i agree
I also don't understand this hate for the nostalgia. It's in the same world, continuing the story so you're gonna see familiar characters. And wasn't Slimer always supposed to be living in the firehouse? I dunno. I'm glad we're getting a new ghost. And seems like it's setting up to make more GB movies without leaning on the old stuff.
Poor thing, I see Nostalgia as part of the brand/presentation now & aren't bothered by it.
When paul rud said busta makes you feel good, I was like oh boy
i mean if your gonna have old characters return you might as well as show them in the trailer and not hide them pretending they aren't there
i also appreciate when they bring back characters you didn't expect to return like the guy with no d1ck
Abrams lol.
Haters gonna hate, the movie sure looks awesome though and I'll be there to bask in it's greatness when it comes out
Apropos of nothing, big props for the Scorpia shirt. :)
I love patton in this so far.
Where did you get that shirt, I want one!
So you hate this movie for doing the opposite of what the last movie did that you hate??? I mean if you're not even going to try and enjoy it then maybe don't waste your time...
I haven't the first clue what you're referring to.
I don't know, I feel like Frozen Empire might be a bit..... *puts on shades* Cool
I'll see myself out
There is a international trailer that might be more to your taste. It’s better than this one I think.
Abrams
The international trailer is way better, showing there's actually a real story to the movie beyond just member berries.
Fucking yeahhhhhh love it ❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Can't wait to see it ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I watched the trailer and and soon as we saw who talking to the new ghostbusters I was checked out. I knew they were going just try and hit the same beats as the first movie.
come on you knew they where going to use Member Berries one more time it's just how movies are cause they can't just start fresh after a 35 year where are they now come back
Ghostbusters for familys movie thats why no killing of people in it what you want rated R get over it
The international trailer is a very different beast to the US trailer. If this is character and nostalgia, the international trailer is the story. Marketing failed the 2016 film in my mind, and perhaps this is a knee-jerk reaction to that?
100% agree. Bringing Walter Peck back is a BAD idea.
nah brining him back was a good idea enough time has passed for him to appear again
100% a good idea bringing Walter back.
The international trailer is better. I think it shows the story better
Dude, it's the trailer, chill... The purpose of this nostalgia shown here is to drag people's asses to the cinema, and most people are down with it. Go to the cinema, watch the film and enjoy yourself.
Well, there's no sign of Vigo at least.
International trailer! 🚫🥶 gb2 afterlife was a masterpiece.
Watch the international Ya know this isnt a drama
Maybe its not like that in the actual film but going off the trailer i have no hopes
does a ghost turning you to a zombie count as a ghost killing someone?
Depends on whether or not it's reversible.
i don't think it was shown @@BreakRoomofGeeks
Idk why this is the trailer we got. The international was so much better.
Should react to the international trailer.. not as much nostalgia in it.
I'm excited for it , not getting the hate fans seem to have on one trailer,
Calm down.
I don't remember JJ Abrahms as Evo Shandor. 😂 (That's one hell of a mystery box)
(To be fair I was convinced it was Paul Reubens as originally planned in first film)
The international trailer they jiat relased ks way better
You are never ever ever ever ever happy
The previous 8 videos ranged from pleasantly surprised to gleeful. You either skipped them or have an extremely selective memory.
I'm extremely excited for this movie and I saw almost nothing wrong with the trailer but the international trailer is 100 times better.
Ehhh, everything sucks. Let's hope no one makes anything anymore or maybe make something yourself? Naw. Stay home. Don't watch. Don't appreciate. Continue to spread your negativity.
Uhg.
Walter Peck is a bad idea. It ruined the actor's career. Maybe if he is now a good guy.
Take a deep breath
This better be better than Afterlife, which was pretty mediocre and I like seeing the original cast play bigger roles, Walter Peck returning, and returning to New York.
Yeah. I’m not thrilled with how Ghostbusters is being treated nowadays. Unless they took this franchise in a completely different direction without relying so heavily on any of the original characters or plot elements, I’d probably be more on board.
The international trailer is better.
I want I want I want shut up tf
Ghostbusters 2 is a platant rehash of the first movie.
@@SpedeVesku I'm not convinced you've seen Ghostbusters II if you think that's a fair summary of it.
@@grumpylibrarian
- Nobody takes Ghostbusters seriously, until they have one succesful case, which is followed by a montage of them busting ghosts.
- Dana is stalked by the big bad.
- A creep lusting over Dana is possessed by the big bad.
- An authority figure doesn't like ghostbusters and locks them up.
- When the big bad is taking over, we get a montage of ghosts rampaging through New York.
- A giant mascot character walks through the streets during the climax.
@@SpedeVesku If you're going to be purely reductionist, then Top Gun: Maverick was just like Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Both had beginnings, middles, and ends. Same movie, amiright?
@@grumpylibrarian I listed actual plot-points, the ways how certain scenes were presented and at which point of the story they happened. That's way more specific than "stories have a beginning, middle and end"
