I sold mine, had it fixed and working nice and just git bored of cb radio .... sold it for nothing. I regret it, I have others now but I am walking along in life and kicking myself in the ass about it. Love that radio.
Great job on the video's. I am first class tech and worked on the radio's back in the 70's and 80's, now retired from Delco Electronics and getting back into the CB stuff. Never had that shorted glue issue back then. Interesting that this glue is shorting all these old radio's out. I am buying a few radio's now to work on and this is very helpful info.
Great review Mike remember it's not against the law to modify a radio it's against the law to transmit on a radio that's been modified you can listen all you want
Knippex makes a nifty tool for stripping magnet wire; it has different blade sets for the different gauges of wire...beats trying to strip with a box cutter as I used to do! One caution about rewinding coils/toroids that probably doesn't apply here BUT just in case - you have to make sure that if there is a phasing relationship between the windings that you follow it (those dratted dots on the schematic); in some circuits it's important and not in others but if you don't follow it when it is required the circuit won't work correctly or at all. TNX for sharing Mike!
Well within reason on the power output. The factory is too conservative at times but on the other side a lot of customers and irresponsible shops go too far. My Lincoln has an MRF455 from the factory as a final a 5 watt dead key is kind of anemic with that much transistor. If the rest of the radio is poorly designed or has low rated parts it makes sense to upgrade those parts right? Not to get insane power out of it but to make it run cooler and to balance the design to remove weak links. The MRF477 is a 40 watt device right? Would it really hurt it to have it swing to 30 watts? Is it a problem with the chassis not being able to safely support that level of output? Oh and I am not questioning your judgment as a professional I am trying to understand the nature of this radio since I own one. THanks Mike for explaining?
Did Uniden and Kenwood get together and go half's on the Sony Bond? My TS-440 had the same problem, the dreaded Dot Problem. Also I checked with an ohm meter and get no conductivity the glue is almost white. Was there a change? I've owned this 2600 since the very early 1990's when I bought it new.. Thanks for the video!!
Mike, do you have a web site besides these you tube video? I'd like to contact you regarding my HR 2510 that is in need of an overhaul/de-gluing + getting the radio tuned up. Please contact me by answering me here and we can go from there. Thanks!
Have one of these radios. I use it for a 10 meter beacon station. Specs Call for ~25 watts nominal for CW mode. My wattmeter shows about 10 watts on a dummy load. Is this typical for this model of radio?
No, it should be able to do 25 Watts. Remove the covers and check to see if there is deteriorating glue around the toroid cores like shown in this video. As it becomes conductive it starts to short out the toroid cores and output power gradually decreases over the years until there is no output at all. Mike KC3OSD
Nice video as always.Could you suggest a vendor for a good capacitor kit , using Panasonic caps and similar other known brands that you use servicing your radios? Thanks
Greetings ! If you happened to eventually find this information I would greatly appreciate it if you would please forward it to me !! My e-mail address is: fixxyourpc@gmail.com 73 de Mark, WN3SIX
Dan at associated had it I'm getting between 120 and 160 peeks out of it on upper and lower sideband I think someone's put some heavy-duty finals in it
Yep, still a problem. After almost 40 years they are still using this crap. It's nowhere as bad as it use to be but I do still see small amounts of it in modern production CB radios. Luckily modern surface mount component design radios don't have as many parts hanging off the board that need it so probably why you don't see as much of it.

Hello friend, I have a President Lincoln Mk1, that when turning it on for the first time it takes some time to show the frequency of work, I explain myself better, the screen turns on but it does not show me the numerals, and after 5 minutes they appear, but that happens only when the radio has several days off, I imagine it can be some capacitor, you could help me to repair this fault. Greetings from Venezuela
I agree it is like they where building in a failure mode. Not as bad as Apple though! Their laptops and phones are designed to fail. Nothing like forcing customers to replace their appliances!

I’ll give that a go! Appreciate you. Paul

How do you remove the glue? Heat gun? hair dryer? Soldering iron? Chemical.

How much does it cost for a restore on a 2510?
Ditto, I have an hr2510 I haven't turned on in 25 years. How can I get it restored?
Is glue a problem on the modern radios, or did they fix it?

Mike - You have a link/source for the bulbs? Been looking for replacements but it seems LED's are all the rage now! Thanks! ~Jack, VEG

Same here, Mike, I need to contact you about a repair/restoration of a Uniden 2510. What is your preferred method of contact?
