@marauder622 Well for the first example of the skank, if he's playing 8ths between kick and snare, what is his right hand doing (on hihat)? Is he matching his kick and snare?
@MRLariful and your point? Tons of extremely talented drummers use triggers. Its not a cheating thing, its a way to get the exact sound from your drum that you want. A beat played on a normal drumset (not electric) is a solid beat played. The triggers Kollias "uses" (I havent researched that) are because he wants his own unique sound.
@FutileExistence Hardcore came out in 81'(DRI, Charged GBH, Discharge, etc). Without it, there would be no thrash or death metal. I agree though that Death metal is like 20 time better. :P
@MRLariful triggers dont affect speed only the sound the drum makes like using distortion in a guitar, in my opinion triggers are a great tool in drumming, they allow you to here where you fuck up in your kick patterns more because each note is a solid note, with out the triggers your bass drum may have to much ring for fast playing & all your strokes will sound like one not, joey uses double pedals so he doesnt mic both kicks live nor does he play at those speeds where its needed.
:35 , just so I'm interpreting this right. His double stroke on the cymbal with his right foot is in sync with kick and snare (as in first stroke on cymbal at the same time with kick, and the second stroke on cymbal with snare)?
That is one of the most important things of being a drummer. Because nobody likes any kind of musician that is too serius. Than the music sucks. But if we all were the same then the world would be boring
God damn. For a drumming noob like me, I'm working on Jason Bittner's regimen of doing a single stroke roll on the snare, and right foot matching my right hand. (So, left hand is the upbeat, or the "e" and "uh" of the beat). Then move your right hand to the ride cymbal (for me, just to the rim). So far, I'm only at skank beat tempo and I'm surprised how it works - I'm able to even attempt a skank beat for the first time ever. Practice, practice, practice!
HabAnagarek the traditional blast (or as kollias just calls it blast beat) here is like doing a simple single stroke roll on the snare, just that you shift one hand to the cymbal
@UnwillingOrigins Indeed he is. Personally, that's the only way to do a skank IMO, unless the tempo is 140-ish bpm (or 280, depends how you want to interpret the tempo)
Is that why his snare to tom rolls sound like they have a chop to it when he starts on the snare because of what he was talking about leading with the bass drum? Just something I noticed about him that sounds different than most. Not saying It's bad, just different. I'm not a drummer so excuse the terminology.
@naplame Hardcore drummers were the first to utilize the blast beat(and skank beat) as far as intense genres go. Afterwords, thrash metal bands adopted it. Finally, death metal perfected it.
That is not at all why I am saying that. I don't blindly follow others to "fit in". I enjoy all different genres of metal, and a lot of non-metal as well. I don't enjoy them because, in my opinion, they are unoriginal. There is no way you can refute it, as it is my opinion. You don't have to agree, but there is no point in fighting it.
@naplame No Sense by DRI is the "first" evidence of a blast beat. DRI started in 81. I know Wehrmacht used blast beats but they are crossover thrash...
@AllInDrummer they dont suck live, its just not all of the songs Hellhammer does are that demanding. Probably half of the stuff they play live, are songs they made when they were teenagers, so obviously those are much more simple than when Nile is playing.
@mateoarv I'd say that it depends. He's fast, alright. But look at drummers like Sean Reinert from Cynic. He's maybe not that fast, but he's really a progressive and technical drummer. And also, there are tons of undiscovered talents out there. I saw a 15 year old kid playing "Kaffir!" by Nile on drums, so yeah... Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of Nile and George Kollias playing... Just saying is all.
Kaleb Towne Yes. It's basically playing single strokes between the hi-hat (left hand), the snare drum (right hand) and the kicks in unison. So it would be something like this: R-L-R-L K-K-K-K Check out Derek Roddy's Endurance exercises. His demonstration might be useful.
George is a beast, specially on extreme drumming, but there are others out there who maybe are better when it comes to rhythm. Also I don¨t understand this "battle" between George and Joey. They're top drummers in their genre, but I would like to see them playing some R&B or Prog Metal
@AntifaAnarchy Venom is NWOBHM, Speed Metal, Thrash Metal and essentially the first black metal band. I said that Venom paved way to other forms of extreme metal... not that they were the first that blended metal with punk. Lrn2read
thats why he doesn't play just blast beats. just because hes popular for OMG BLASTBEAST BR00TAL and his foot techniques, doesn't mean he isn't creative.
i bet he has something above him, off camera, that he looks at whenever he drums. just to make us think he's trying really hard, cuz we all know he can do this in his sleep.

My favourite sounding snare for blast beats
1.47 is what it's all about...playing the blast with 1 foot. it just doesn't sound the same when alternating left and right on the kicks.
So cool he even leaves his right hand free when blasting...
The bomb blast sounds amazing.

that drum set is sick
I'd shit bricks and buckets after that.
haha, how could ever think about disliking this

@iThrashNano

what cymbal is that he uses all the time?
@Haddockxyz300 John Longstreth? Francesco Paoli? T.T from Abigor? Hannes Grossman? Etc?
God damn. For a drumming noob like me, I'm working on Jason Bittner's regimen of doing a single stroke roll on the snare, and right foot matching my right hand. Does anyone know what type of drumkit he's playing ? It sounds awesome !
@lolBAkeLOL: Eat drums, sleep on the drums, play drums, Eat more drums, sleep in the bass drum, Play even more drums, become god.
@happyburial wht about flour munier from cryptopsy ?
@UnwillingOrigins Indeed he is. Personally, that's the only way to do a skank IMO, unless the tempo is 140-ish bpm (or 280, depends how you want to interpret the tempo)

i dont think i will ever be able to play like this lol. he is fucking insane. but im not even 16 yet so i guess i have some time to learn how to.
You're 27 now, can you do blast beats?
George Kollias isnt human!
I was keeping speed with him for a little bit, but then I just stopped. I couldn't keep going that fast for long at all.
@CamerOneiric
You're right. Its about technique and opinions.
@jayb613 Death metal came bt 1982, 1983. Somewhere in that era. Was really underground till atleast 86 though.
@naplame
Hardcore drummers were the first to utilize the blast beat(and skank beat) as far as intense genres go. Afterwords, thrash metal bands adopted it. Finally, death metal perfected it.
3:15 OMFG! THAT'S SO FUCKING SICK! D:
Can anyone tell me, a drum noob, who is better? George Kollias or Buddy Rich? :)
Monster, congrats!!!
derek roddy calls the down blast a hammer blast!!
I call it a hardcore beat since most hardcore bands play it.

I wish my Superior Drummer can play this^^
@Prelude1383 wut about derek roddy?
@jayb613
I know this... but Death Metal came in the 80s as well. =)
@naplame

I want to learn how to move my feet really fast cuz i can do the blast beats pretty well but i need more speed in my feet!
@lolBAkeLOL what do you mean eat, sleep?
Respond to this video... What about Dave Lambardo and frost?
1:04 which tempo is that, like 180?
@mateoarv I'd say that it depends. He's fast, alright. But look at drummers like Sean Reinert from Cynic. He's maybe not that fast, but he's really a progressive and technical drummer. have you ever heard about George Kollias?
@Haddockxyz300 Ya I guess so, there are just many fucking amazing ones.
does the bomb blast at 1:53 lead with the right hand on snare? r-l-r-l like
snare -hat-snare-hat? s-h-s-h but r-l-r-l
Kaleb Towne Yes. It's basically playing single strokes between the hi-hat (left hand), the snare drum (right hand) and the kicks in unison. So it would be something like this:
R-L-R-L
K-K-K-K
Check out Derek Roddy's Endurance exercises. His demonstration might be useful.
Kaleb Towne The other variation of bomb blast is both left and right (snare and cymbal) in unison which is like the down blast with double bass
i agree best drummer in metal by far...if u don't agree find a better metal drummer and tell me his name....Kollias is #1
George is a beast, specially on extreme drumming, but there are others out there who maybe are better when it comes to rhythm. Also I don¨t understand this "battle" between George and Joey. They're top drummers in their genre, but I would like to see them playing some R&B or Prog Metal
i cant ever do this in my dreams

@happyburial Im sorry sir but you forgot Tim Yeung
@nigelic You must check Inferno from Behemoth!
...why are you aggressive? I was not ironic. Sorry about the confusion. I totaly agree with you
thats why he doesn't play just blast beats. just because hes popular for OMG BLASTBEAST BR00TAL and his foot techniques, doesn't mean he isn't creative.
@naplame Doesn't matter who created it, Pete Sandoval mastered it.
@FutileExistence
Venom is not thrash, Venom is early black metal.
i bet he has something above him, off camera, that he looks at whenever he drums. just to make us think he's trying really hard, cuz we all know he can do this in his sleep.
@FutileExistence no sir,hardcore punk has been around earlier than death metal.
I never said Nile were posers. I god damn love Nile. I was talking about Avenged Sevenfold. I guess my comment was poorly written.
