the timing on the solo part (trying to play the way it's written) is killing me. And I played drums. Your little solo at the end of this was fantastic - your knowledge shines here
Well, I don't think I'll be able to play it for Thanksgiving >this< week, but definitely next year. (I can play it very, very slowly right now.) This was fantastic. Thank you so much. Playing something like this has been what I've been jonesing for since >checking watch< the 1970s.
Brought up really powerful nostalgia for me this year 2024... remembering all the time with family and friends in the 80s and 90s..such a different world back then.
Could you help me understand what key this is in? It sounds like C major to me, but I'm stumped in understanding how Bb, Eb, Ab, Db all fit. Except that my ear tells me it sounds good. Just looking at the chords, it seems like this is Bb minor, but clearly it isn't.
Oh man great question. I think the first portion is pretty clearly in C major with a 'hero walk up' the Ab, Bb, C portion. The following chords are cascading down the cycle of fifths to land on Db, which is the tritone substitution for the five chord, G7 in the key of C. Even though we are playing just major triads here, if you thought of all of those as dominant 7 chords the cycle can be heard easier (not to mention the functional harmony is easier to be seen). I think some of the amazing compositional finesse that Vince put into this song is that he puts that 'hero walk up' in immediately before he starts changing keys. Because we just heard the Ab and Bb chord in the walk up our ears are warmed up to the sound, so when the Bb, Eb, Ab, Db cycle kicks in it sounds like it fits perfectly in!
You omitted the wonderful coda - ascending broken triads in 1st inversion: C, F, G, Ab, Bb, Db - resolving down to a final C chord.
Yes I love that part! Check out the version with the trumpet solo, Tom Harrell plays amazing on this tune!
I'm a huge Guaraldi fan, but there's something about this particular song that leaves me feeling very empty and sad.
Yea I get that

Anything Tom Harrell is good by me, he is one of my top three trumpeters. Blue Mitchell also.
Ok yea that is really really a great recording
This song reminds me of Linus And Lucy
I love this song. Besides, I love all the Peanuts gang

@@mackgrout I didn't understand all of that but...I understood some (I know what a tritone substitution is). Thanks!
I thought Schroeder played the Thanksgiving Song?
