Hi! I've been playing the piano for 13 years, but I never played jazz on the piano. When I started playing jazz, it was on woodwinds, so I never learnt to comp. This sounds like exactly the sort of practice I need, so thank you! However, I feel like it's still a bit too hard for me on most tunes. I tried it on All Blues and Autumn Leaves, and there I kinda just settled into certain shapes and inversions that I didn't switch around, and I didn't employ any sort of voice leading, so I was often jumping from place to place, just to get to the chord shape I had learnt. I tried it on Misty and In a Sentimental Mood, where I really struggled and almost never managed to hit the right chord. What I'm trying to ask is, do you have any tips for exercises for absolute beginners into comping? People who only ever knew the piano keyboard as something to memorise tunes set in stone on? Maybe exercises to learn to read chords? Anyway, thank you so much for this exercise!

Hey Mack. I've been teaching piano for 35 years. I always knew going thru diatonic chords worked . I'm familiar with Barry Harris transitions. I loved the way you spelled them out this way. I still find things in the major diatonic scales I hadn't noticed. Thanks! Bill

This is a great technique. I’ve learned block chords using with the VI minor 7 chord as well as some other variations. This is a really easy and cogent way to play blocks. I almost always use my left hand thumb to double the right hand pinky. Reminds me of a big band saxophone section. Great video!!!

As an intermediate-ish player this seemed quite hard to begin with. Breaking the chords down into their spelling helped me to work out what was being played. I guess the idea here is the basic chord sequence is just a stepping stone. i will be coming back to this video. Never thought of watching at half speed. It's gonna take some time to get even the basic chord sequence down. Thank you you for teaching this.

Just a question. When the Fm chord is played there is a D note at the bottom, so should this not be Fm/D rather than Fm/C or is it an Fm6? Thanks

A "stinger" in jazz music is something like a crash-out octave or a chord that sounds staccato - the crash-out being the final part of the Count Basie outro.

Re the comments that this is too hard/fast etc, ..... Yes.. it's not beginner level, but I don’t think that is a problem . It doesn’t go off on a tangent, and the explanation is clear. Maybe it needs an indicator that this is more imtermediate as it assumes a familiarity with chord shapes and/or an ability to read sheet music. Good practical videos on this channel.

You omitted the wonderful coda - ascending broken triads in 1st inversion: C, F, G, Ab, Bb, Db - resolving down to a final C chord.

Slow down and make sure the audience has a chance to get the basic version down first... then start going into alternate inversions. I know it seems elementary for you and I did pick up a few new things but I knew this basic turn around already. To much in one lesson for beginners. And yeah, that G13 is really cool. I hadn't tried that.

the timing on the solo part (trying to play the way it's written) is killing me. And I played drums. Your little solo at the end of this was fantastic - your knowledge shines here
