In water, rebirth, bliss, stillness and maria are far better imo
"Stillness" might be one of the most powerful endings for any game I've ever played. It fits James, it's intensely emotional, it makes perfect sense but also breaks your heart. You don't want this ending for him, but you didn't want that ending for him and Mary when they spiralled due to her debilitating illness. Silent Hill 2 is such a heart-wrenching masterpiece. In no way did I suspect it would be about learning to forgive yourself for growing to hate someone who became scared, alone, and incredibly finite. It wasn't her fault, but it wasn't his either. They suffered incredibly. And yet.. in the end Mary still looks at him with love in her eyes, because deep down he knows while he regrets how he feels, her love for him, even after all she did to push him away, shone through all the debris.
Does the stillness ending imply an alternate timeline where James unalives both himself and Mary to avoid her slow decline, or is Mary’s presence not literal but is symbolic of her spirit comforting him as he unalives himself?
@AegisAuras I feel it's his interpretation of how Mary would feel about what he needs to do. She's, as far as facts depict, fully dead already in the back seat. His openness to trying, deep love for her, and his willingness to have gone to far to do what she wanted (survive and thrive) while failing, is what allows him to feel like she is there for him, forgives him, and will be waiting for him It's so tragic, and I feel it's all in his mind, but I feel it's also informed by him discovering more about how she felt, how he did too, while still not being able to live without her.
Not to negate you folks‘ interpretations but imo James doesn’t suffer the same fate in stillness as he does in the Water ending. Listen to the audio of both…😅 it’s subtle but the implication is wow. That’s why James asks Mary to wait for him imo 😊
The 'Stillness' ending is hands down the best ending for Silent Hill 2 Remake. The scene is so well done, I was actually crying! The acting is amazing too. Bloober Team absolutely nailed this remake. @chronchris1486 kinda weird. I did nearly every bad thing, I checked Marys picture a lot, I Visited Maria in the hospital. The only thing i did good consistently was healing, I guess thats the most important part since i still got the leave ending.
I got the Maria ending so far. It’s funny that a cough was Mary’s initial symptom before her condition became acute. So I’m guessing that James will eventually lose another woman to the same illness. Still though I like this ending because James realizes that Mary isn’t coming back and he’s ready to move on. I myself lost my wife back in 2013. Part of me will always miss her and I’ll never love my current girlfriend the way I loved my wife but speaking from experience I can say that time heals wounds and while the grief never fully goes away it’s never impossible or too late to love again.
please know im sorry for your loss, and im happy for you to have made it to a better place now. this is a game. so im not trying to superimpose my thoughts on the maria ending onto your real life situation. It shows him discarding his wife. not moving on from the loss. and using maria as something to help him forget. plus, the part you point out with his clear disregard for her health by making light of her cough. I think the leave ending is probably the closest thing to a "good" ending we can get. Because it shows him coming face to face with his own self hate, and moving past it. I don't think the town claims him in Stillness. Regardless of whether he takes his own life or not, in Stillness he finally communes with Mary's spirit and accepts that although he will move on, Mary will always be waiting for him in death. He doesn't give into his despair like in the In Water ending

Wow that stillness ending.. it hits hard cus by now you expect them all the be so sad. The idea of getting the chance to go back and change your mistakes.. it's beautiful and I respect that it's the hardest one to get
I feel sad for Maria everytime. She was born from a wish, with her own personality, and became an empty cocoon of trauma after dying three times (4th if you count the final boss). She only wanted James to love her and take care of Laura. Truly a cursed town.

Just being able to go back before an illness takes over that person’s life and being able to just stay there. Massive props to Bloober team I think Stillness had the best performance though
I think leave is the best and most cannon ending. With in water it's like their relationship completely got destroyed over the final 3 years of Marys illness. She was begging the pain to stop, complaining that the doctors were just cashing in on her being stuck there and pushing James and everyone she loved away. She felt like a monster and apologized for it to James and want's him to live the rest of his life and be happy and wants him to remember her for who she was not who she became with the illness. With Leave you get to see this back and forth of like, I killed her... I'm a monster, but she was in pain and she wanted to die so It was a kindness.... but... it's not why I did it. I hated her, I wanted my life back, but now she's gone I miss her so much etc and it's this real like deep complex ride through their final moments together and he really finds peace with her and she forgives him. But with the In Water you don't see any of that 3 years of deterioration and you lose some of the depth to it. It kind of makes the killing very motiveless and weird. The stillness endings acting is excellent and really adds to the in water (especially since she is in the back of the car...) but for me the leave ending gives the most complete end to all the character arcs. That or the dog ending. That REALLY ties up all the lose ends to be fair
people say it is but in SH4 James father says he never came back and then there is the timeloop clues including the remake photos suggesting he is in there still.
@@silverwookie4643 I feel like the bliss ending would be great but they would have to have him fight the two pyramid heads earlier because that part is so important imo

To me the leave ending is canon, because i watched some facts about silent hill franchise in RUclips and i learn that Laura is supposed to be appers in SH Homecoming as adult instead of another female character and she's wearing James's coat when she ride a boat with Alex (the protagonist of Homecoming) but they removed this idea later, that's way it makes sence if you connect it with leave ending
@@jamesconlin-90s excuse me I'm sorry, cybil is police character in first Silent Hill game, she has her reference in Homecoming about her lost motorcycle, if you remember the intro of SH1

I understood the interpretations but I could never get invested in these characters. After hearing about how great this story was for so many years, I was let down. I thought the ending of The Evil Within 2 felt more emotional than this. It has excellent atmosphere but some of the voice acting and dialogue constantly took me out. With the first ending, at least there is some resolution to Mary and James admitting what he did.
@Romeo-vt8hq for example, care for Maria, check up on her in the hospital, stand by her for a bit etc. Apple choice at the hotel will either go towards other endings or maria ending. Dog ending you can't get on 1st playthrough. Has to be on NG+ I believe UFO is the same. There are very small choices you can make, if ignore a small part or do it poorly affects the game
leave,in water and maria endings are the only endings you can achieve in new game and is connected to several factors like how much time you spend while james is in low health, how much damage monsters give to maria and how many times you inspected items like angela's knife, handkerchief and mary's letter in your inventory and stillness, dog, ufo, rebirth and bliss are only achievable on ng+ and require you to collect various items unique to ng+ depending on which ending you're doing

Leave ending really looks like the true ending.
@@josephinewang5932 Because it is.
@@ZeroDigitalArt it's not, there is no canon ending. The og developers said it
@@OtaconLav they said the canon ending is whichever you want it to be.
It is...
people say it is but in SH4 James father says he never came back and then there is the timeloop clues including the remake photos suggesting he is in there still.
Stillness and Bliss would be great endings for a movie adaptation. What do you guys think?

I'm not gonna recover from that ending or this game. goddamn.
"better do something about that cough". Im sure james has the cure for that.
There's nothing a bit of choking can't cure
I enjoyed stillness but I couldnt take my eyes off that creepily long ring finger. 😵💫
@@mumuvp fr thought maybe they got the middle and ring finger reversed somehow
I do love the way whatever ending you get James is a monster. Struggling his own demons to remember what he’s done. Acceptable is how he takes it. Bloober team did a fantastic job and should do more SH remakes. Best thing I’ve played in years
Not gonna lie, some of the ending made me tear up. The bliss ending was dark but sweet, probably my favorite ending.
I think Stillness is the ideal and logical ending. Because he came to terms with his guilt and decided to not end himself. He decided he'll live his life for Mary, until time ends and he meets her again.
My ass wanted to inspect everything, and even though I barely kept the red screen I still got the "In the water" ending..
I got the “in water” ending and it blew me away. Definitely feels like it makes the most sense in the story
I just played for the first time ever and got Maria on my first try
Me in the original
stillness is the best for me, i got maria ending... which is the worst for me
Bet the developers were havin fun to make the dog and UFO endings Cannon!!! XD
For Christ's sake, the bliss ending gave me the chills. I WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT! Oh my god!
In UFO ending Space James looks like PS2 James and I think that it is a PS2 James 😅
Yep, Sean Bean for the poor, imo 😂😂😂
“Everything’s fine”
Whenever I hear that now, i immediately think that NO things are not fine
Stillness is beautiful. Worthy of the original.
This is an amazing video! I am glad you made a such a valuable video.
The Rebirth Ending really caught me off-gaurd, I wasn't really sure what to expect but yeah I was super uncomfy when I unlocked it in NG+
I like to think that James was able to bring Mary back with those four items, I just wish it showed her resurrected in the ending cutscene.
Bliss ending is so beautiful man
im confused on what it suggests, like why is james not there on the armchair? could you explain it please?
@@juliajablonka5417 it's believed he is transported into the dream to live with Mary forever. He has totally deluded himself and let the town take him to be with his true love again. Tbh, a pretty happy ending despite not being his reality anymore
The Acting in the Doge Ending is the best I've seen in over a decade. I'm crying just thinking about it.
A thing of beauty …
The in water ending in the original broke me after playing the first time
Seeing this come full circle now, its an incredible story, maybe one of the best storylines in any survival horror game of the las 25 years.. thanks bloober/konami, Masahiro ito and Akira Yamaoka 🙏
This game was brilliant, the acting, the gameplay, everything
Yeah yeah. Leave is still the best ending.
I think the “in water” scene is considered canon but I’m glad I got the “leave” ending. I finished the game with hope.
I got the drowned ending in the original and I didn't repeat my mistake this time. Got the leave ending in the remake
it seems like the most satisfying ending is the one most people get at their first playthrough. idk how it was in the original but in my opinion best endings should be the ones you work the most hard to achieve, it feels like every other ending is unsatisfying and outright depressing.
Did all of you got water ending in your first play
I did
In the original i got the leave ending, so I played the remake like i did the original and got the In Water instead lmao
Original maria ending new one water
I didnt I got the normal endong
No i got leave, which is the best ending in my opinion

If Luke Roberts isn’t nominated for best male performance this year it would be the most criminal snub ever.
Wow, all of these are spectacular....
First time I played it over 20 years ago, I got the “In water” ending. I played the remake in these weeks, and I got the very same ending, when I saw him sitting into his car I said “Oh crap, not again!” ☹️
The bliss ending is good… but I can’t help think that in reality, poor James is just slumped in that chair, deceased and covered in his own vomit.
The stillness ending is
For some reason this game absolutely destroys me emotionally like no other.
Bliss ending actually game-save ending, Maria actually say the same thing as Mary when James save the game for the first time..
What was that UFO ending!?! I got the water ending, it seemed fitting for the story.
Why does James speak polish in the Dog Ending???? WTF
@@KroiYuukiHime Bloober team is a polish company from Kraków, so to reflect the og dog ending they made this one be in polish! :)
“You better do something about that cough” lol. This line had me laughing so hard, Maria better watch out!
She’ was in the Back seat the whole time 😅
To me the leave ending is canon, because i watched some facts about silent hill franchise in RUclips and i learn that Laura is supposed to be appers in SH Homecoming as adult instead of another female character and she's wearing James's coat when she ride a boat with Alex (the protagonist of Homecoming) but they removed this idea later, that's way it makes sence if you connect it with leave ending
Silent Hill homecoming condradicts Silent Hill lore so no its not canon
@@jamesconlin-90s what about cybil motorcycle reference?
@@y.belwouakes007 Huh?
@@jamesconlin-90s excuse me I'm sorry, cybil is police character in first Silent Hill game, she has her reference in Homecoming about her lost motorcycle, if you remember the intro of SH1
I mean, it would make sense.
James would essentially have honored Mary's wish of adopting Laura.
These are all interesting but each one misses something, Leave is missing Maria who I assume is his current girlfriend while Maria's is Missing the Laura and wife's letter reading, therefore, the UFO ending is canon 😅
I found them all devastating af. The beginning of the story already does not leave much room for optimism.
I got the Maria ending. guess i tend to always disregard all key points even I'm following the guide..guess it's my nature to always go the other way

I just got the stillness ending today, a tear ran down from my eye… 🥲
The remake was the first time I played all the way through SH2. A little disappointed that I got the “In Water” ending on my first run. 😢
Nie! To nie może być prawda! - I love how James speaks polish in the remake RAHHHH
WHY IS UFO ENDING SO SCARY TF-
If I got the first ending, I probably would have had a more positive response towards the story. The drowning ending feels like no arc is resolved.
17:45 Fox Mulder ending
Stillness probably the best but bliss is the most disturbing I think. Nothing was learned. Continue the delusion.
who here from nerissa
I love the game and I respect the people who love it but the "James, you made me happy" was weak
Do the different noose choices in the prison dictate which ending you get? I know the joke endings require different things.
What are the conditions for these various endings? I mean there’s not really much of choice making in the game
@Romeo-vt8hq for example, care for Maria, check up on her in the hospital, stand by her for a bit etc. Apple choice at the hotel will either go towards other endings or maria ending. Dog ending you can't get on 1st playthrough. Has to be on NG+
I believe UFO is the same.
There's more endings? How do u even get them
You have to do things differently before reaching the final boss
Some are only available in NG+
I got in the water for my first play through
Oh hi doggie 🐶
Bliss ending reminds me of Adolfo Bioy Casares's "The Invention of Morel".
Sad OPE noises.
What's really the difference between in water and stillness ending..he dies in both
@obito9897
In "In Water," James feels he can’t be forgiven and ends his life out of guilt to be with Mary.
In "Stillness," James feels Mary forgives him, and he forgives himself. But he still chooses to join her in death, this time out of love and closure, not just guilt.
@@Steepall thanks mate..now I got it
I don't think he dies in stillness. You can hear the car door open just before it's dropped into the lake.
