  • Hi, I'm Tate Harris and this is The Daily Report. Today I talked about another late night of homework that I had to do, and I mentioned a potential solution that I am going to try for next time. Thanks for watching and I'll see you tomorrow.

    Tate, you need to do your homework as soon as you get the assignment while it's still fresh in your mind. Don't wait to the last minute.

    Tate, as a retired high school teacher, I think you may be too involved in your other activities. Remember, youur course work must be your priority . Don't wait til the last minute to cram your academic assignments.

    Tate: Take it from an English teacher of more than 2 decades: grammar is not subjective. It is the objective rules by which we make our language intelligible to others. Normally, grammar comes before style, since you need to understand grammar before you can play around with the language for effect. Keep up the good work and get your rest. God bless.

      An English teacher who knows nothing about linguistics? Where do you think the rules of grammar come from? Are they handed down from the sky on golden tablets? Of course grammar is subjective.

    • @gandalfolorin-kl3pj
      @gandalfolorin-kl3pj 2 дня назад

      @@qwertyTRiG How nasty you are! The rules of grammar have long been codified so that they are NOT subjective. They are objectively applied so that we can understand one another. The fact that you don't like their objective quality does not make them subjective. It makes you subjective in your judgment of them.

    Always allot more time to do your homework. Understand why you are in college. You are there to get an education first and extra curricular activities last.

    Tate, grammar may not strike you as important, but it really is. In the business world, grammatical errors -- I won't say they're job-killers, but they can leave people with a bad impression of you and your work. My dad was the dean of an engineering college, and he insisted that his students take at least two writing courses so they could make themselves understood to non-engineers. Good grammar was very much a part of the curriculum. Like it or not -- and many people don't -- study, learn, and use good English. You will later be glad about the time and effort you spent on it.

    Both my Dad and brother are aero-space engineers! Sorta glad that I didnt follow in those footsteps! Sounds like your college is preparing you well for that field because it requires a lot of critical thinking and problem solving skills and is probably equally as tough as preparing for the medical field so there may be many times that you are up until the wee hours of the morning working on an assignment! Of course you have to get in a little fun while in college but you may have to rethink and adjust your goals sheet and not pack in so many extra activities that will take away from the study time that will be required in your field of study!

    Hey Tate, a suggestion : it’s great that you made a list for your activities, but make another one. Start with scheduling everything about school for a whole week. Plus your sleep schedule. Ten insert the social activities that you like most. Finalle, add the other ‘non-school’ activities that you want to do. If there is nog time left for the latter, so be it … If you make such a schedule every Sunday, I am sure that you will feel more comfortable. As I said : only suggesting 😊

    I can see in some of the other comments that summarize 'more school/study time, fewer extracurricular activities" are recommended. In addition, be wary of supplements such as creatine, which can cause side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, and various other gastrointestinal maladies.

    There is a notable connection between problem-solving and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Essentially, REM sleep is more frequent in the latter part of the night, meaning that waking up with an alarm clock can result in losing a significant amount of precious REM sleep. During REM sleep, the brain operates differently than during deep sleep. It is nearly awake, which is why in French, it's referred to as "paradoxical sleep," and engages in creative processes (dreams) and problem-solving. Ideally, you go to bed with an unsolved problem, and upon awakening the following morning, a solution emerges. If this occurs, it's believed that the "nearly awake" brain has resolved the problem during REM sleep.

    Tate you have chosen a tough discipline in Aeronautical engineering at a good college with a reputation in the industry for producing good engineering graduates, so part of the reason that your professors load you with problems that require a ton of self learning is to prepare you for life as a graduate aerospace engineer where the job will be all consuming.
    The other day you talked about your goal of having a lot of new experiences and meeting new people - that’s good but the sad fact is that your chosen profession is a hard taskmaster and it’s a fact that you will have to limit your choices to that which benefits you. The Rocketry club for example should be top of your list of extra curricular clubs. Make no mistake when you are looking for a work experience placement which I assume happens in your course then the best placements go to people with connections and the best grades.

    If you are having difficulty understanding something, you might consider seeing if you can schedule a meeting with your professor to see if he can clarify issues you are having. Keep in mind that engineering demands a lot of time and deciding what is a priority item can be difficult, but your courses need to come first or life may get a lot more complicated particularly in your junior year where the level jumps in the course difficulty. Having taught engineering - mechanical - I can tell you it does not get easier based on what I observed with many students.

    You are already catching it here from language teachers/learners! Unless you have complete command of the fundamental tools of language - grammar, punctuation, spelling - you will not be able to do anything coherent with style. When your professor tells you that some things are „optional“, that does not translate into „unimportant“! The placement or omission of a comma can subtly change the shading of the content or lead to misunderstandings, and you don‘t have the benefit of oral or body language clues when you are writing. You must learn to express yourself in such a manner that readers will not misunderstand you (a very difficult skill, and we see every day how few people have really mastered it).
    One of the most difficult things for me to adjust to when I left a US university and came to Germany to study was exactly what you mentioned here. I was used to tests covering the material that had been discussed in class. In Germany, lectures covered the broad principles and gave a few examples, but you were expected to do much, much more outside of the lectures and learn all the details and mechanics. Apparently, that is the attitude taken by at least one of your professors.

    • @civitasparisiorum-o8u
      @civitasparisiorum-o8u 2 дня назад

      I concur. Elements such as oral or body language cues, along with their counterparts in punctuation, writing style, poetry, rhymes, and so on, are significant because they communicate with the right hemisphere of the brain.

    I never did like English/grammar classes when I wasin college, I liked match and physicals sciences. for me grammar always seemed incomprehensible: it could be this, it could be that, it could be both or neither. it just depends on how it is used. WHAT???
    just take care in not sleeping, it can mess you up later in life
    about 100,000 years ago when I was a freshman in college taking physics, on the first day the professor said "I expect everyone to keep up with me." he started writing formulas on the board and at the same time with his left was erasing it. it sucked, you're trying to keep up with him but it is hard to grasp the information he was trying getting across. at end of first week, myself and half the class dropped it. mind you this was back in the daze of stone tablets and chisels.

    Find it odd you’d publish a video saying no issues with the school work and slamming all the concerns expressed in the comments. Then you publish am update about doing your homework last minute and forgoing sleep. Then the following day a video discrediting the concerns. Your 2nd year goal of being more involved in extracurricular needs to be reconsidered. At what point are you going to really consider the feedback everyone is providing you here?
