  • Whistler Resort may be the one of the largest ski resorts in the world, but that doesn't mean you have to stop there. There are ample backcountry spots all around Whistler to whet you whistler on. Today we are headed north to the Duffey Lake area north of Pemberton and the infamous Joffre Lake Park.
Highway climbs up from Pemberton and over to Lillooet (an old mining town), giving easier access to plenty of the mountains in the area. Today we are headed towards Steep Creek, located to the east of Duffey Lake. Day starts with a 90 min climb up to the Steep Creek backcoutry hut. Open access hut that sleeps about a dozen and was currently home to about 6 skiers, mostly from Quebec.
From there you can head down to the lake and get a view of the ridge, or head straight up to some higher elevations. We followed the ridge to the south-east, some fresh snow helped the climb, but some of the section under the trees were extremely iced up. Upon reaching the top of the south-east ridge the wind picked up significantly. We had been eyeing up the east ridge, which hangs high above the lake looking down menacingly, but as it's my first trip this year, decided for something more conservative.
We switched back to touring mode to do a short but technical climb back up to the ridge, this time heading back towards the highway. The sun was starting to get low on the horizon and we headed towards our last run, following the sun kissed ridge to a spectacular view down towards the lake.
The last run was a little steeper than previously so tried to be safe and conservative in our ride down. Snow coverage has been low this season, so the last third turned into a bushwhacking expedition, but we got back and down to the road, and all I got to take home was a massive blister on my ankle. Look after your feet!!!
Hope you enjoyed, like and subscribe!

Minus the massive blister I got it was really amazing. Lessons learnt for next time. Just getting back on the snow today after 9 days off snow. It was a lot of work, but on balance def think it was worth it

@@ChrisEyres absolutely, getting into splitboarding this year so videos like this are great motivation. Glad to see the real story too of missing parts and iced up glue, paints a real picture of what to expect out there.

To each his/her own, looks like a really good run except for the trees that are getting tighter and tighter.Wish we at STEVEN'S PASS SKI RESORT in Washington state (2-3-23) would get a dump like that or better.SP hasn't had a dump in a month.Temps over all have been between 31-35°.But it's a good video.

Sorry for late reply Moe, thanks for checking it out. Really enjoyed the day and would’ve done more since but it gave me the mother of all blisters on my foot. Adjustments must be made….
