    Hm.. I personally prefer original TEG. I like the dice activation/follow in the original because it cuts both ways; I can follow someone, but they could also follow me in a different turn. Having a "no follow" period adds a bit a downtime to other players and may actually worsen the active player's analysis paralysis.
    While I appreciate the bigger dice, I personally don't like the color; going from black, which to me says, "The Void of Space", to traffic cone orange, feels it went from "serious" to cartoon-y. And the same could be said about the planet art and iconography. I feel like a bit of personality was lost in the card redesign: squaring the tracks isn't as visually appealing as the original curved design. And, this might be tied to how I feel about the square design, I'm not a fan of the galaxy slider; I don't think it was that difficult to track your upgrades in the original. Finally, I'm not a fan of "iconography only" design, as I feel like I would have to reference the rulebook more times than I would like.
    All that said, I think I might house rule the 1 energy/culture for conversion into my OG TEG, as I think the two dice cost is too steep; that's the only thing I would change from the original.

      Ive owned teg for like three years and I dont think I've ever used the energy convertor.good call, stealing this rule.definitely would miss the text on the planets.definitely would miss pilots and unexplored space too.hmm..

      @@ericdollarhyde3296 yah converting 3 dice to a wild is such a rare occurrence, agreed might try to just change this rule with my original version

      @@SeekerLancer *sigh* I need to unwrap my copy of Beyond the Black. Right now my work group is all about Love Letter, Lords of Waterdeep, Abandon All Artichokes, and MTG, while my BIL (my other gaming partner) and I are deep into Ascension, Oh! My Goods, Race for the Galaxy, and an occasional Blitz Bowl. Love TEG, but definitely love having gaming partners more; maybe when one of those games drops out of favor...

    Just ordered! I’ve always kinda wanted the original TEG, but this one convinced me more. Love the new art and symbols for actions. Great activation bay changes too. This overall seems much easier to teach new players without compromising too much of the OG gameplay.

  • @gavinkinsley6851

    I really like the 2 things that Kira talked about specifically with the new version. The idea of one dice can be converted by spending energy or culture but can be followed and only can follow first 3 dice. I just still love the original artwork so much more...wondering if gamelyn has any thoughts about making an updated "bay" for the old version. I would be in for that :)

    • @dav1dgear
      @dav1dgear 4 года назад +1

      Also you did not mentioned another major changes. When you re-roll you need to reroll all dice, you can't bank dice, you need to either activate or reroll. That a really huge change in strategy. Also there are no solo version which is a downer

      Danagonia Hobby If you have younger kids in your life this new version will be a sound purchase.
      Personally believe the OG is better though, the new one doesn’t have a Solo Mode, and the OG thematically just sets the tone better.
      If you go camping or travel a lot with friends check out the Ultra Tiny Epic Galaxies, it’s the OG but fits into a box the size of a pack of playing cards :D

    I too am a big fan of the Original. I got this as it looks easier to teach my son (6yo). I can only go on first impressions, I personally don’t like the change in art work, I much prefer the original, but do think kids will likely enjoy this art more? I do like the quality of the dice, and I do like the icon based format (text free), and the Tech Level Slider, that’s also a good addition.
    I think they should have had a communal player score card. I also don’t like the fact their is no solo mode as in the original. I’m sure I’ll have lots of fun playing it with my boy, he loves TE Dinosaurs!
    I think they missed a trick here, they could have maybe made this a travel game, the non-slide kind, with pegs or magnets to hold the counters in place, it would have worked really well for that, and would have made it a bit more relevant, not sure how you’d implement the cards.
    I have the original and love it, it’s a game I am very fond of, and honestly if you are a mature gamer I believe it’s a more attractive version, especially with the Solo Mode (if you get it by the bigger box version with the expansion in it!) I have the expansion, but haven’t really tried it as of yet.
    I also have the Ultra Tiny version, which is really really good, everything in a box the size of a pack of cards! Hope they do more Ultra Tinys!

      Yup! Love the planet art but prefer the og graphic design. Love the icons and accessibility. Thank you for sharing! I love the idea of a travel-friendly version. This and dinos would be great picks for something like that in the future.

    I would have said that this was a nice review but I can't say it cause it is another incomplete review pointing only the positive changes. The graphic style changes it is a matter of preference so I won't stay there and the new changes are welcomed and nice also but the game has two flaws that make it a bummer from the original one. First they removed the secret cards which of course isn't mentioned in the video, but I can bypass that cause how good was as feature is again a matter of preference BUT the fact that they removed the solo game from the box and put it only as a print n play download sometime in the future is a major issue for me (especially since I play the game solo a lot) and I think it marks it as the first Tiny Epic game without a solo mode in the box (if I am not mistaken). So for me this is a serious issue that should have been mentioned in a review and I think it should cut also from the overall rating of the game.

      Hi and thanks for your feedback. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. You made some really good points!
      I spoke specifically about the parts of the game that mattered to me as a Galaxies fan. I like the goals but do not find them critical. Also, I do not play solo, so it is not something I would talk about. (Note: I believe they said there will be solo rules for this available on the website)
      I did mentioned how I am not a fan of the new graphic design, so not everything was positive. ;) With all that in mind, that is why I gave it the score I did, because for me it's better than the original.

      I agree completely it doesn't make sense that they remove solo rules. Also why reduce player count to 4? I

    • @meeple
      @meeple  4 года назад

      There is and it does not. I don't mention for a few reasons, but primarily because it is not part of the core game and I do not find it is a critical in relation to this new version which is clearly made for a new Galaxies player.

  • @plouf1969

    Hi I'd totally buy this one given that my son 'borrowed' the original one. TEG is one of the best games I've played, I find the mechanics great. The change in rules look mostly like house rules that one could backport to the original game, or ignore in the new one...
    So question for you Kira: I am concerned about the fact that the colony powers on the planets may be much simpler than in the original (mostly because they are all icon-based rather than being text-based, which allows for more variety). Is that a valid concern?

  • @leehutchings9069
    @leehutchings9069 4 года назад

    Thanks Kira. A nice review. But how does this compare to the original TEG plus the BtB expansion? I never play just the original anymore. I always include the BtB expansion. Our games tend to have quite a few ships in the unexplored space region all the time.

      I’m not sure you understand how businesses work if you think that’s a bad thing. A company can both want to expand their consumer base and want to make slight artistic/design improvements for the good of the game. Those things aren’t mutually exclusive.
