This is Episode 9 of my #ladakh series. Khardung La is the highest motorable road in India, and perhaps even in the world, situated at 5,359 meters above sea level. If you are traveling to Ladakh, then Khardungla Pass is one destination you must visit. The destination is exciting, but what is even more thrilling is the journey. This high-altitude mountain pass is located approximately 40 km from Leh Town and is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Ladakh. You can hire a taxi from Leh Taxi Union to reach Khardung La. Additionally, you can even hire a bike to get here. However, riding a bike during winter is not advisable as it can be life-threatening due to the extreme cold weather.
#khardungla Pass is maintained by BRO (Border Roads Organization), and you will need to obtain a permit from the District Commissioner's Office in Leh to visit this pass. Although the experience of visiting this place in Ladakh is bound to be exciting, there are certain things you should keep in mind.
