    I have study generators for a long time I finally decided to purchase one for my house I live in Louisiana my purchase was a generac 20kw diesel generator(money well spent thank you lord for blessing me with the money to purchase) that replaced my portable gas one that I use for years the only reason I purchased diesel was because a storm that went through Louisiana a couple of years ago people with natural gas gen sets had issues with low gas pressure and they were burning appliances, up my gen set turns a 1800 RPM's and has 95 gallon tank I have spare diesel on hand 58 gallons and my truck is diesel 36 gallons I have plenty of diesel for a long run but do have my portable on standby if needed, God bless you guys in Texas we in Louisiana are praying for your fast recovery

      You are so so correct, one has to examine their location and situation. Yea, if I had the space, diesel generators are the true work horses, that I would switch to. Thank you, we were one of the blessed ones, where we were only without power that is it. Many out there not as lucky.

    Back in February of 2021 we all experienced the ice storm that caused major power outages in the southern parts of the USA.My welder/Generator Miller 500D puts out 24KW of power was used for powering our whole house for 248hrs or 10+ days! The welder never stop once we hooked it up by turning off main 200amp breaker and turning on 50amp breaker back feeding the main breaker panel with everything online like we never lost power. We wash clothes like normal, heated our home, no lost of frozen food or anything. The diesel fuel that was use for every 1hr of constant power during the whole time period was a half a gallon of diesel fuel! It has a 25 gallon tank to run about 48hrs before filling up which we did by fuel cans that we filled up by our 500gal diesel storage tank.! A diesel power generator is the way to go with powering a home during a power outage if in a rural area!the advantage of farm diesel is a cheap fuel to power your home for long power outages like we all experienced and with hurricane season on it's peak and other storms and outages it better to be prepared even if it is a small generator is better then nothing. Fossil fuels are not ready to be phased out or taken away do to going green has proved not ready for prime time during multiple events after the ice storm we all face. Stay cool during summer seasons and Stay warm during winter season and stay safe when using generators and help your neighbors, friends, and family as they will help you!

    So for everyone who has a natural gas generator one way to check to see if your genie is getting starved is turn on your gas stove one burner at a time, check the flame, if it goes down it is starved, if none of them are really on you have a major problem. Now run the genie on a full load and repeat the test.

    I've got both Anker Solix F3800 with 1 extra battery & Westinghouse Wgen9500DF.
    Westinghouse handled Central AC with an easy start, no problem.
    While the Anker handled the rest of the house at night, during the day I was able to charge it with the Westinghouse.
    I bought the latest eg4 chargeverter to provide clean power, for future use but arrived a day before hurricane & I didn't need it.
    I have 3 x 100lb propane bottles which I only used 1 during the hurricane Beryl.
    I have 100ft 6awg extension to put the Westinghouse as far from the house as possible & secured to the fence post in the back yard.
    The Anker provided 1.5 hrs of use on full charge pushing 5000watts(3500watts was AC alone)
    Westinghouse provided 24hrs total time on a 100lb propane bottle.
    Westinghouse is the way to go, price & efficiency but I like having the option of running essentials quietly at night & do maintenance on the Westinghouse hence the Anker.

      @@Dednursewakin I did, that's when I bought my little Honda. I think even if you get a big generator, you should also get a small inverter dual fuel. Some storms we are also without fuel for a long period of time. I also went thru Alicia, that one SUCKED. I was about in 5th grade and my dad had me out in our flooded yard picking up all the branches, chopping stuff with a machete. All the fire ants were floating around in big blobs and the strays would climb on me and sting me. Very bad memories. I've been in the Houston area since 78. I forget the storm, maybe it was Roda...but back in the mid-ish 90's when I was still in Texas Army National Guard we got activated and helped people that were flooded in their homes get to safety with out deuce and a half and 5 ton trucks as well as our mess hall folks setup aid stations. As for your hose issue, you can probably get a 90 degree elbow in there where you are reducing the diameter to allow you to close your door. Great setup! Definitely an inspiration and gave me some ideas for mine. I bought land up around Madisonville and will be building up there and plan to have a mix of gen and solar for backup. I'm looking into some mini-split ACs that are hybrid and run direct off solar and the grid as needed (solar with good light, grid at night unless you also get batteries). I'll have a large propane tank. If I still owned my previous home, I would have did something similar to what you did since it is a gas home. Thanks for sharing, and hopefully you won't need it again soon!

    • @gilbosdiy
      @gilbosdiy  2 месяца назад +1

      Yep, I thought of the elbow as soon as I posted the video.
      Man since you are gonna be building on land. If it were me, I'd go with a couple 1000 gal tanks, but that's me talking out loud. Man how would you handle the tornados and straight line winds, with the panels?
      Mini split are great, since they are basically inverter style built in units. That doesn't draw as much amperage. I didn't know they have them as a hybrid now, that's another plus.
      Yea let's hope not, oil been changed and gennie is put away in the garage.
      Thanks for watching.

    • @modsquad8u
      @modsquad8u 2 месяца назад

      @@gilbosdiy I will consult people from my company as well as engineers on mounting panels in that area. I'll probably orient my building so they can just live on the roof, but I also need to talk to the steel building company to see what they say about the added weight. I'll get a building that's certified for the wind rating up there.
      I was also thinking of dual tanks, but it will just be me. I'm also going to try to build to passive standards, although I probably won't get the plaque, lol. But I do plan to build a very efficient home. Double stud walls with no thermal bridging and the wall cavity filled with blown in insulation. I'll probably build small and build a couple different buildings. I want my office separate so it's an easy tax write-off.

    I built the same setup 4 years ago. Work great without any issues. I then installed a soft start on my home AC 3 weeks ago. After hurricane Beryl My generator ran great for a day and a half. After that it overheated because the extra load was generating so much heat that the fan I had could not exhaust the heat fast enough. Lesson learned I have to buy a new generator and set it up outside the storage unit when in use to have proper ventilation. Also only use generator to run the whole house AC for a short period of time. Generators are not designed to kick on and off a whole house AC with a slow start every 20 minutes when it reaches temp inside the house. Also if you need gasoline Costco has their stations active with built in generator, backup generator on standby, and 2 tanker trucks. I refueled there 3x per day and it took less then 5 mins in line to pump.

    Quick question, I have the 10500 tri fuel but cant seem to get it started on NG. Do you have a regulator on the gas line?

    • @gilbosdiy
      @gilbosdiy  Месяц назад

      Generally it takes 3-4 attempts to purge the air of the line. That's with a T-off the gas meter at 25 feet. You setup situation could be a lot different than mine, (i.e. further in distance, T-off down the line vs at the meter, etc...)
      Since my gas meter is already set a 7" WC (.25 psi) with a regulator from the gas company on my gas meter. I do not need additional regulator. Now if my meter was a bigger meter and set at 2 psi from the gas company then yes, I would need a regulator to lower the gas pressure down to the 6"-8" WC level.
      Hope this helps, if you have anymore question(s), just ask, and I'll try and help. Please don't forget to hit the like and subscribe button.

    As of right now I’m going on day 6 without power, it’s the Sunday after and I’m still running my house on my 12500 dual fuel Westinghouse. What I’m doing is I’m filling up my gas tank with gasoline and running it off of propane then switching over to gas when I need to take a bottle of propane to fill it up, that way I constantly have power to my house, before I switch over I’ll let it rest for about 10 minutes, I’ll check the oil, and just check if all is good then crank it back up. I have a 1600sq’ house 3ton AC, 2 refrigerators, and I’ve had no issues running any of this the whole time. I get about 12.5hrs of run time when on gas all the topped off and about 5 hrs it seems like on a normal bottle of propane. In the future when all this is over with I’ll be buying me a 100lb bottle of propane to use to supply my generator. These generators are a BEAST.

      Man, I hope you power back soon, today or tomorrow. Man, make sure you stay on top of oil changes. Your generator is working overtime. Tak care of it, so it can continue to take care of you.
      A little suggestion for you on the propane, I'd go with a 30 lb or 40 lb tanks. Reason being, with A 100 lb. tank holds 23.6 gallons and weighs 170 lbs when full. Transporting it, gets to be a task. Especially if the wife has to move or what not. For example a 30 lb tank holds 7 gallons of propane and weighs 55 lbs full. The 40 lb propane tank holds 9.4 gallons of propane and weighs 72 lbs full. At 55 lbs and 72 lbs that makes it lot more manageable to move.
      Thanks for watching, stay safe.

      Wow, that is very surprising, did you T-off form the gas meter or did you use like a BBQ grill gas tap. Sounds like the generator is starving for fuel. I just think the supplied nat gas hose is too small especially 1/2". I would bet, if you get a line with a 1" ID that is T off the gas meter, and not down the line that will solve that problem (a long as the distance is super long).

      @gilbosdiy I installed a 1" tee after my meter with a full port shutoff valve and male threaded nipple to match the FNPT end of the supplied hose. I thought since they supplied that hose,it was designed for it. From what I can tell, the generator starved itself out when my AC kicked on. My suspicion is that many residents using nat gas for their generator could've caused a low pressure/flow situation. It ran 48 hours, no issues, and then another 48hrs.
      I just ordered the micro-air easy start. It looks pretty simple to install. This should be recommended for any AC running on generator power as my lights would dim when the AC cycled.
      Overall, I'm happy with the WGen11500TFC performance. Changing the oil tomorrow for sure. Seems like many Houstonians are no longer relying on centerpoint to get us back up in a short time frame.

The cool part about Starlink Mini is that you can just buy the unit and not pay for the monthly service until your need it, and that service is only $50 for 50GB, which is more than enough to get through a week long internet outage. I have a smaller unit I bought back during Ike. Can't run the AC (a killer) but at least keep the fridge, freezer, a few fans, TV, and some lights on. Just quickly in my head adding up your load, it has to be a gas clothes dryer, right? I live in an all electric house so going beyond the basics is tough for me. Electric water heater, electric clothes dryer, 3 Ton AC, electric furnace, really adds up quickly. I need about 22-24KW just to run everything. If I go this route a permanent house unit is the better option. But wait, all electric house means I have to run the generator of gas, diesel, or propane. It gets' pretty unmanageable really quickly. So for now, I'll just keep my portable unit and resolve myself to a space heater for heat, a window unit for AC, fans, TV's and then turn all of those off to heat up the water heater or run the clothes drier. Everyone's dream of a hands of auto-switching full coverage system are not really practical unless you have a lot of $$$. I can't really justify $15K for a system to be used 4-5 times over the course of 30 years.

      Since, you are all electric, that changes everything. As far as the a/c goes, take a look at a window unit. They make those as inverter style window units now, drawing very low amperage. Think some as low as 6 amps. That is similar to a lot of fridges.
      You are correct, cost of a standby units ($15K - $20K)are simply through the roof. That is for me I went with this route. Thanks for watching

    Could you please settle an issue on the oil for me? I called Westinghouse and they said you screw the dipstick in all the way, but only fill it up until it’s midway between the L and the H. I noticed in your video the little label on the frame shows the oil practically pouring out and that of course means it’s overfilled. The woman I spoke to at Westinghouse said even though it says it takes 1.2 L it really doesn’t.
    There’s just really no clarity on it. I don’t mean to make an issue out of somethings so obvious but oil is important! Westinghouse seemed confused. What’s your method?
    One last question? Did you have to bleed the natural gas hose or does the unit do it itself.

      I will be wrapping the flexible exhaust, with heat wrap.
      To answer your earlier question, the flexible exhaust, is just pushed up against the exhaust of the generator. Nothing fancy, It didn't vibrate away. If anything, you might use some wire to wrap the flexible exhaust, and hook it to the exhaust cage.That will ensure it will not move away from the generator exhaust.
      I use my WGEN 12000 DF during outages. I used the WGEN 11500 TFC was just a test.

    Why using a 1" hose instead of a 1/2"? Does this affect the power output at all or just wanted a sturdier hose?

    • @gilbosdiy
      @gilbosdiy  Месяц назад

      I use a 1" ID hose to ensure there is enough volume of natural gas for the generator. What can happen, is if there is not enough volume is natural gas for the generator, you are basically starving the generator of fuel.
      Since the pressure supplied by the gas company, is different from area to area. That also comes into play. That is why it is important to know what the WC (water column) is for your gas meter.
      Also best to T-off from the gas meter for your generator, versus tapping in downstream after other natural gas appliances. Teeing off at the gas meter, allows for highest flow to generator.
      Hope this help, if you have anymore question (s) just ask, and I'll try and help if I can. Make sure to hit the like and subscribe button. Thanks for watching.

    Is the 20-25 hour oil change Westinghouse’s recommendation or is that just your preference? My GP6500 Generac is break in at 20 hours and a change every 100 hours after. If I’m on the road working, I don’t want my wife to worry about doing an oil change every day. I was seriously considering this unit, but the constant oil changes may make me go a different direction.

    • @gilbosdiy
      @gilbosdiy  2 месяца назад

      Westinghouse suggest 25 hour after break in. Which I have no problem with, take 10-15 min and oil is cheap. If you are in a climate, that is not extremely hot, then its fine for the Generac. The manual for Generac GP6500 states in "extremely hot climate change more often". Then again what is, "more often". For me that statement of , "change more often"sounds like if you want to warranty a bad engine and you changed it every 75 hours, and it failed on you in the Texas heat. They might say, well you didn't change it enough since it is extremely hot there.
