Guardians of the galaxy made this popular again. Being an og, I remember this from Midnight Special. Ms came on Friday nights followed by Soul Train. Good times. Good times
Hi Jayy! I met Lolly Vegas, the singer in the video, once in the 1990's, but I didn't make the connection as to who he was. He showed up to play at an open mic night hosted by the owner of the club I used to hang out at but had no axe to play. The owner knew who he was but didn't let on, so he asked me to lend him my guitar as a favor as well as for some free beer. Lolly didn't play this song which is too bad. If he had I would have figured out who he was right quick. He played a ballad in a Texas blues style instead. And he busted the high e-string on my guitar too, but I didn't mind too much because I had a spare. It was cool. He died about five years after that and was buried in the same cemetery they buried one of my uncles in two years ago. RIP.
There’s an Independent Lens documentary that is shown on PBS from time to time called Rumble about Native musicians. Redbone also does Witch Queen Of New Orleans about Marie Laveau.
True rockers are a very diverse group. We were blinded by the music. We felt the connection from the radio. My generation of music lovers were “enchanted” by our differences. Great group. Feel good music. There is a cable TV show (best show on TV) called Yellowstone. In one episode they featured Native American rap groups. Pretty cool. You should check out the show. It’s perfect binge watching the first 3 seasons. Season 4 starts in June and runs through the summer. Season 3 final cliff hanger will blow you away. The character of Beth Dutton ... is my spirit animal. Great reaction Jayy.
That's right .. A Native American Indian rock band. A damn good one too! .. Long before critical race theory and systemic racism was shoved down our throats .. ANYBODY with the drive, talent and determination could make it in the music industry. Check out Redbone's ... "Bad News Ain't No News at All", "Maggie" and "We Were All Wounded at Wounded Knee."
Red Bone Recorded a song that was Banned here in the States, when they wanted to record the song their record label wouldn't give them the money to record it, so they raised the money themselves and their lable wouldn't release it so Red Bone took it to Europe where it because a number one song in some Countries, when the song was finally released in this Country No Radio Station would play the song, the name of the song is called "We Were All Wounded At Wounded Knee"
Jayy, Your hair looks like the Lolly Vegas, who's singing lead. He and Tony Bellamy, on the left (the one who does the native american dance), are deceased. Lolly's brother Pat is in the front, and Butch Rillera is the drummer.
I've watched a lot of reactions to this song lately, both new and old, and this was the most genuine reaction I've seen. You really appreciated it and it showed. I was 16 when this song was on the radio.
Great reaction - I love how you have this unsure quizzical look on your face when the vocals start, but by the second stanza, the smile breaks over your face, all is good. :)
This song was HOT in '74 when I was nine and I just KNEW that the lead singer was going to be my husband and we were going to spend our whole lives brushing each other's hair and eating ice cream and I will watch any and all reaction videos to see people's first experience of this awesome band. Your reaction was exactly like mine that day I sneak-watched the tv in the middle of the night on the only channel we could get clearly in our trailer on the edge of Chico, CA. They came on and played this and I had to hold my mouth shut with both hands so I wouldn't wake anybody up it was so good
Pat (Bassist) and his brother Lolly (Lead Guitar) last name Vegas started the Band Redbone in L.A. California. This was in 1969. Two of the Band members are dead now. RIP Lolly Vegas 2010 and Tony Bellemy 2009. You should check out "Witch Queen of New Orleans". Now that you found your first Native American Rock Band check out the First Female Rock Band called Fanny. "Blind Alley", "Butter Boy" and a Marvin Gaye cover "Ain't that Peculiar".
YES - thank, Jayy - I remember this band - this song was a huge hit - but most of us kids had no idea that they were "native Americans" -- until this "Midnight Special" performance (we all stayed up on Saturday nights to watch Midnight Special) -- I was kind of shocked.. but also hugely impressed - those guys had the courage to go out and show their "colors" - waaaay back in the 70's -- the song was already a hit... but the performance baffled some of the fans... gotta say I just LOVED it...
I'm so glad you discovered this song. I saw that show when it first aired on TV. When I was a kid I used to stay up just to watch the Midnight Special! Thanks for the memories!❤
This was recorded at a time when there was some tensions between the Indian Nations and U.S. Government. A lot was going on (especially between the F.B.I. and the Tribes). The dance was a protest. Free Leonard Peltier!!
Just a simple feel good song Good old rock & roll with a splash of funk Brings me back to my skating rink days We music like this today Need to feel again
1st time i heard this song was on the Guardians of the galaxy movie. Until then the only song i knew of theirs was "witch queen of New Orleans" Another great native American rock band from recent years is the band called Indigenous.
Hey Jayy, there is another native American band called Blackfoot that you should check out, they are a little bit more hard rock than these guys but just as good!!! Love what you do Jayy keep up the good work
Love this since I’m part Native on both sides of my family which is why I didn’t identify as white growing up and people usually thought I was Asian or Hispanic
They were Native American Indian. Yaqui and Shoshone and Mexican. The lead singer was Lolly Vegas. He was the most gorgeous man I have ever seen 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I swear, the only good thing about being a 9 yo girl in 1974 was THIS SONG RIGHT HERE. I was lucky we had a tv with a headphone jack in our double-wide, because there's no way my parents would've let me watch this in the middle of the damn night but I did 😆
If you want to check out more traditional indigenous dance (and the regalia the dancers wear), look up some pow wow dance competitions and the various categories (women's fancy shawl and jingle dress dances, for example, but there are also men's dance styles such as what you saw at the beginning of this video). The biggest pow wow gathering in North America (aka Turtle Island) is the Gathering of Nations held annually in New Mexico. They have video on RUclips. I'm just an average whitey, so an indigenous person could tell you more, but I figured I'd mention it because I find it all really impressive and beautiful.
My niece was married to a half breed, Mexican / Native American, he was of the Shoshone nation. They have one son all grown up now. They live on the other side of this country from where I am. I haven't seen my brother and family in years!! I never met my nieces ex or her son. Have photo's though. :) anyway, thought I would throw that out there.
Witch Queen of New Orleans is another Redbone tune you must give some ear, The band XIT is heavier and their. Lp "Silent Warrior," is a great album, also "Plight of the Redman" Lp. Tony Bellamy/Guitar and Peter Depoe/Drums played on My Tlingit brother Archie James Cavanaugh Jrs Lp "Black and White Raven," Jazzy Lp with Jim Pepper on Saxophone. its on Utube, Check it out!
Your reaction stated out a bit disturbing, but you caught the groove of the song pretty quickly. It is still one of my favorites at 78 years old. I view it quite often.
It was good to see olive Love. lol my name for you sorry. but now you playing my language. Im native German french and irish american ... Come lol keep up the good plays and times in life that some remember... Love that smile and you said better come and get it lol.
This song was #1 in France in 2018 after it was used on a TV ad. In 1995, German eurodance The Real McCoy had an European hit with their cover version.
Have enjoyed Native American Rock Bands, Redbones, Blackfoot the like . There is another Native Rock Band......., XIT, from the good old 70s . Their songs about History and Education.... Fun stuffs
There is a documentary that is called Rumble The Indians that rocked the world. It is great it shows some famous bands with native American musicians . Good to watch
Check out The Hu "Wolf Totem" Mongolian Heavy Metal band singing in Mongolian. Gets you revved up. There's also a version of the song with Jocoby Shaddix of Papa Roach where he sings in English

WOW
A very underrated American Indian/Mexican band. I have their original Albums. Good stuff
This was just another HUGE hit in our time! Never underestimate what went on in the 60’s and 70’s. We did it all. The age of ... everything!
Shout out to my Native American Brothers🦅🦅💯🎼❤️
I’ve always loved this song 🎶
Love how they shared their culture at the beginning 👏🏽
They have old school soul🔥
It’s a little spicy 🌶
You should rent the movie "Rumble". It's a documentary about Indigenous Musicians in Canada and the US. Jimi Hendrix was part Native American.
He was part Cherokee.
He also was the one who suggested the name Redbone to Lolly . Hendrix was very fond of Lolly and Pat
Yes! Redbone! American Indian Band! 😎🤗🤔
Spent many warm 70s summers cruising and playing this song
Very sorry for your loss. She is always with you. ♥️
There’s an Independent Lens documentary that is shown on PBS from time to time called Rumble about Native musicians. Redbone also does Witch Queen Of New Orleans about Marie Laveau.
That song is a classic. The band was awesome and it's great to see your reactions. This is exactly why I subscribed.

That show is being boycotted by Adam Beach, because they apaprently hired non-Natives to play Natives.

That's so true.
This is probably one of my all time favorite songs from the seventies. Great tune!

Great reaction - I love how you have this unsure quizzical look on your face when the vocals start, but by the second stanza, the smile breaks over your face, all is good. :)
I was today years old when I learned that this song, which I've heard countless times, was performed by an Native American group.
Same here, and I’m 67😬

XIT is another Native rock band from the 70's.
This was recorded at a time when there was some tensions between the Indian Nations and U.S. Government. A lot was going on (especially between the F.B.I. and the Tribes). The dance was a protest. Free Leonard Peltier!!
Love this, saw them perform this at the L.A Car Show in 1974 or 75.
Wow your a lucky to see that live, cherish that memory
Here’s another I love from that time Dancing in the Moonlight by King Harvest. 💜

"Rez Metal" ("rez" is the shorthand for "reservation) is one of my favourite things right now.
Oh, hun; you've seen Native American Bands before [or bands who had some NA's in them]; you just didn't know it, as it was not often advertised.

Have enjoyed Native American Rock Bands, Redbones, Blackfoot the like . There is another Native Rock Band......., XIT, from the good old 70s . Their songs about History and Education.... Fun stuffs
The dance at the start is called The Feather Dance, the bass player and lead singer are brothers. They are all Native Americans.
They do ritual dance before every performance to make sure bad spirits stay away so I read
I think it worked!
The America I loved as a kid growing up in Washington, DC.
Girl, that's my ringtone,❤

That song makes me happy 😂❤
Now be honest...If this was an audio only track you would think this is a black band right? Virtually eveyrone in the 70s did! (me too LOL).
Just a GREAT SONG!
Really Fun and upbeat song! Great reaction Jayy! Looking foward to watching the New Cooking channel! Enjoy your weekend.
We only had two. Redbone and, Southern Rock band Blackfoot.
Blackfoot - Highway Song.
How about a Native American blues band.
Indigenous, with the guitar star - Mato Nanji.
Check out The Hu "Wolf Totem" Mongolian Heavy Metal band singing in Mongolian. Gets you revved up. There's also a version of the song with Jocoby Shaddix of Papa Roach where he sings in English
Love your reaction 😁💜👏😍
The group was the Only First Nation group to hit #5 on the billboards
I love this song. Great band
Outfits are in the movies, costumes are at parties. Native Americans and culture dress in regalia.
Also looks for another out of Florida; Blackfoot "Train, Train" song, southern rock. It's really cool.
So much great Indigenous music.
Love it Jayy xoxoxo
Serious, go try Snotty Nose Rez Kids lol xo ❤✊
also, did you know how they were banned in the States? Listen to Redbones song on Wounded Knee.
This was sampled by a rap group back in the late 80s early 90s
It's one of those feel good songs. 👍
I feel like an idiot! This is from my childhood, and I never knew they were Native American/Mexican!!!
