There is never enough focus on the INVESTMENT fees. These tend to be scandalously high in superannuation funds in Australia. Much higher than if you were investing in the same fund outside super (for example an ASX index fund) while the default pre-mixed funds are eye wateringly expensive and should be avoided. There is no justification for this. The whole industry obfuscates as much as it can to hide these fees and the media also inexplicably seem oblivious too it as well. Another point is that the default options tend to be crammed full of unlisted assets that do not have valuations marked to market so the fund more or less gets to choose those valuations for itself. The problem with that is that they have an incentive to keep those valuations high to make their returns look good vs the competition yet they are largely just a rough guide only. Super investors have to be really on the ball to dig down into this info so as not to be ripped off.

I'm with hostplus. While the fees are higher than unisuper it earns more on average. It would be interesting to know at what balance would it be best to switch from hostplus to unisuper given Unisuper earns less on average, but also has far less fees.

@@epistarter1136 Hi I am still with sustainable high growth and probably won't change until I am deciding to take it all out only reason why its smart for us to go with a high growth option is because of our age the good thing about supers is that over long term there always profitable so why wouldn't I go with a higher risk option if the only down side is it could be bad if i want to take the money out in the near future but over a long period of time which our age indicates it will be its always better to go the slightly riskier option, hope I have answered your question and have helped. to sum it up its only risky if you want to take out the money in a 5 year or less timeframe if not there's no extra risk.

Also did you mention if you can change your super fund at anytime as you said most are available now ? Good stuff, and good luck self retiring with super. Australia is super generating many billionaires other than those who own that money. More importantly many immigrants hold that money which will get that after massive deduction than value being appreciated. Why don't they be invested in long run public investment than high risk or volatile share busting unfair share holders income from zero to billion next day. Now labour raises the issue and there are earthquakes. Those who have a mighty darling night with a loved one with labour money have woken up with big sock and heavy current belief that they are a big loss within the next hour. So again this money will work against this policy. Act fairly, if someone wants to buy the house with their money then why not? Or want to borrow with minimal interest rate than why not. Who already used to in looting makes the rules for the rest and how it will work for many other than to themselves who make it. The other problem is pokes, why don't we send money in a card that will only activate in real estate portal or any portal that is either investment other than pokes. If pokes is becoming such a deadly issue why don't we have other policies to protect from it, it is far more simple to maintain and control it. Technology is already in such a vast development anything is possible without any closer look.
