Loved your video! Am glad it was not edited because I could watch what you were doing over and over as then it stays in my brain...would love to see the sweater when you knit it!
This is such a great tutorial. I first watches it several years ago but keep coming back and now watch it every time I do a combo spin because it keeps me company as I'm cursing about those braids that take ages to undo!
It's so funny to hear you apologize about the quality of your video. Every where I've searched online I see a reference to this video. You've made a valuable and lasting contribution to combination spinning knowledge. I appreciate your random approach as I've seen others recommend a very planned and somewhat methodical approach which doesn't hold much appeal for me. Thank you for posting this. I've subscribed so I can keep up with what ever else you come up with.
I knew you were out there somewhere and was so pleased when I found this again. I had watched you many years ago and been excited with what I learned and wanted to refresh my memory so I didn’t make brown! Thankyou😊
Thank you for this! It was exactly what I was looking for to figure out what to do with my single braids :) I too watched the entire thing, you're pleasant to listen to.
You are great at tutorials Theresia, this the second time I have watched this and I am glad it was unedited because it enables me to enjoy the whole experience. I have also watched your video on your spinning wheels and would love you to do one on your way of spinning. I will now be able to collect some single braids and know how to use them altogether in a combo spin. THANK YOU.
Just wanted to let you know that I remembered watching this video and just went looking for it after more than 2 years! I just wanted to watch it again as a reference before I start on a new project. I've never seen anyone else do this and I just think it's genius! :)
Just found your video thanks to KnittyBlog. What a FABULOUS idea! I have so many single braids that I just have to have because ... you know ... pretty. And yes, there's a limit to how many hats/shawls you can make before people start to question your sanity. I can't wait to try this! *dives head first into stash*
Thank you for the tutorial! Don't worry about it being lengthy - we always can skip any long part. Though it is fun to watch it all! I mix my fibers in a similar way. Sometimes I like to add 1-3 braids of plain colors to "calm down" the colorful craze. :-) Love your podcast! I have 3 German friends here and you remind me of them. Cheers!
Great vid, PassionKnit Spinner!!! I enjoyed watching you work and your ongoing commentary was nice. Please make another vid. of you spinning this up. And, how you ply it. Thanks ever so much! Delightful!!!
Thank you so much for your =idea. I have brought so many single braids and now, I am excited that I can spend a sweaters worth with them. Heading to spread out my stash so I can chose and get started. Thanks again.
A very interesting way of mixing up multiple braids to fit into one project - looking forward to see the finished yarn and the sweater out of it! It seems like a very good way to use all those 100gr braids we all have sitting in our stashes...
I am glad I found your video! I enjoyed the real time and your process. I am working on knitting my first sweater now, but not from handspun. But it’s a goal I have. I love how you mix braids. I find myself buying a single braid here and there because it’s so beautiful. One day may they be sweaters! Thank you! ~~Lee Ann
I think it's a fun tutorial! I am a new spinner and this idea of splitting/dividing the braid is interesting. What is more interesting is the picking and mixing at random. And most fascinating is to pick any piece out of the bag and spin away!😍 absolutely love it!👍👍👍
Thank you for making this video, it is very helpful. I discovered your podcast via this video and I'm really enjoying watching all your videos. Thank you for sharing!
Truly fascinating. Never thought mixing my braids like that. Had to go check my stash right away. I have 8 braids I could use. 4 colours, 4 breeds, 2 dyers, 2 of each colour. You gave me ideas and they are good ones.
I'm saving up for my wheel and I love being apart of this sweater you are making. The only thing that would be better is if I was there to spin with you. I hope there is a follow up to this because I want to see you spin this fiber. Thank you for the videos, love them
This was such a useful tutorial. I am the kind of person who gets bored with the same color way when knitting. This is a wonderful way to mix it up but also make it look cohesive.💕💕👏🏾👏🏾
Very interesting and something I think I would like to try one day. I have only just come back to spinning in the last 6 months, after not spinning for around 20 years and there are so many fun new things to try out.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your spinning and fiber selection methods. I found your podcast very inspiring and fun. I'll be searching out other episodes for sure. I am mostly a knitter but have so much fiber to spin, including several fleeces. I am very happy to have found inspiration. 😃
From Lisa R . Thank you for sharing your ideas and for the tutorial . So many of us have one or two braids purchased because they’re beautiful.....Getting them out of stash and into a beautiful garments quantity is brilliant!
I really enjoyed watching this video that you put on youtube....:) I just wished that I could have watched you spin the yarn. This was almost a great movie to me ....Thank You I Loved It Please make more
They do it because it's supposed to look better more pretty like you said, but in my opinion the braid that's not really a braid ( the crocheted chain ) is much easier to undo as well as making it back up, watched every second and thought you were great, and absolutely loved the colours you chose, Thanks for sharing
Happened on this by accident and so glad I did. this was so informative and such an interesting way to make a more visually appealing sweater spin! Thank you!
That only works if they are chained rather than braided. Chained braids are called braids because the ‘front’ looks like a braid, but it is a 1 stand technique. The ‘real’ braid is a 3 strand braid. Some makers use it because it can look a little neater in some people’s opinions.
It was a great video! My friend just sent me a link, so I followed it and realised I watched a little while ago, but it was so good I watched all the way through again. Oh and just to let you know there is at least one indi dyer out there who doesn't braid at all, I leave my fibres loose!
You can spin less fiber. It´s just my recommendation for your very first combo spin to use a lot of fiber. After that first one, you´ll know how much you needed for your sweater and you can spin less if that works for you. But as running out with a combo spin isn´t easily fixed, I recommend using a braid more than you really need. Just in case.
At first I thought you meant to grab one from each color and spin the in a sort of same order to get a fractal going... I would love to see more of these types and how the sweater came out too!
Super! I now have a clue what to do with my onesie braids! Would love to see your ITW sweater progress also (I'm only on #16 of your podcasts) Thank you so much for sharing your process :)
I think your tutorials are AWESOME! The are very clear and it’s easy to see your process. Thank you for this one and others where you show you’ve mixed rovings! I generally just buy 2-3 just because I like the roving colors...then I don’t have enough to do anything larger than a scarf =P. Best wishes to you! =)
This is an interesting topic. I really like this!!! THanks for the idea, because I am trying to blend fibers to use up my fiber stash. I have all kinds of individual braids that I got but this is a good way to combine them to make a larger project instead of just small one-off projects. Thanks!

Thanks for helping me see how to take things in a colour family and use them together!!

Also, if you can, speak about how the fiber feels when different brands of dyes are used...if you happen to have that information from the dyer. I actually have no idea how the fiber was dyed, so I can´t really tell if there is a difference in spinning. As for the arrangeing: I put the fiber in a bag, like I showed and just spin what I can grab. There is no thinking involved in the spinning part. This way, the finished yarn will look more "natural", like it´s always supposed to be that way.

What was the over all weight of the fiber you used? You mentioned when you were at 300g and that adding the large one would be over a kilo. But what was it that you landed on?
I wonder if the dyers who braid simply don't know how to chain? I bought all my fiber 15 yrs ago and they all started as fleeces, so they live in bins and I just grab the end I can find and spin from there. :)
