    After buying my first fountain pen late last year (a Pilot Metropolitan), I've been struggling to get good fills in the con-40 I ordered with it. I was lucky to get it 1/3 to 1/2 full each time. After seeing this video about a week ago, I immediately ordered the syringes from you. They just arrived and I immediately filled my pen. This was my *first* full fill, and the first time my fingers didn't come away covered in Kon-Peki. Thank you all so much for these videos!

    Honestly, it's just more convenient to syringe fill the Pilot cartridges as they're also easier to clean than the con-40. I wish they made ones like the Platinum or Sailor ones that come apart for cleaning very easily and are much easier to fill normally.

    Upon reading the title I was like "why do I need a video about a converter?" but as soon as I saw what was going on I was SOOO thankful! I've realised that the converter in my pilot metropolitan is the CON40, and this explains why I was having such a bad time filling it up the first time! My method, because I didn't know any better, was to fill it through the nib and feed, then upturn the pen and twist the converter down to remove the air. I had to be very careful though because the ink would bubble out of the hole at the top of the feed there, but as long as I was careful I only made an average amount of mess. This will help me SOOOO much. I'm off to buy an ink syringe!

    Any idea if Pilot will replace the CON-40 anytime soon?

    I hope this video shames Pilot into fixing their converters. Having to fill the converter with a syringe pretty much defeats the whole point of having a converter, you might as well just refill an old cartridge.

  • @kecola
    @kecola 4 года назад

    Yes! Having a syringe is so handy when it comes to fountain pens. Not only for filling converters and cartridges but also for getting that last bit of ink from an almost empty bottle.

    I've got into fountain pens in my later years and I admit that I'm still a novice in the community, but if you need to use a syringe to get a full fill in your converter, what possible reason would there be to purchase a Con-40 and not just refill empty cartridges which I'm pretty sure hold even more ink?

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  5 лет назад +6

      The main thing is that cartridges aren't meant to be used long-term, the plastic isn't really designed for multi-use purposes. That said, after 5 fills or so, you switch in a new cartridge and you're good. The converter is also a help when it comes to cleaning the pen. Being able to draw water up through the feed. Cartridges wouldn't give that to you as well. - Colin

  • @theoverunderthinker
    @theoverunderthinker 5 лет назад +6

    Mrs Thinker suggested wearing nitrile gloves (I have a ton of them from making the first aid kits for the house, car and office) when filling pens. It keeps the hands clean and if you rinse the gloves before you take them off, the ink runs off the gloves easily, so cleanup is pretty easy, Doesn't help you get a full fill, but still a good tip. Her actual quote was: "why do you walk around with inky hands when you have a big honkin' box of rubber gloves? DUH!"
    Anyway, great tips and Drew rocked it as usual! (Kelsi was good too!)

    To answer the grammar question: work equally effectively, because effectively describes work and equally describes effectively ;).
    I always fill my converters then"normal" way, i.e. from a bottle still attached to the nib. Main advantage there for me: the feed is immediately saturated and ready to write. With the syringe method, you might have to give the converter a twist or two to push some ink into the feed (or be patient and wait, but I'm not :) ).
    In fact, I've run into the issue of writing too fast and having to wait for the feed to catch up (or encourage the ink by means of the converter on my Lamy AL-Star) a few times recently... After writing like a whole letter sized page on a 5mm grid.

    • @abc-wv4in
      @abc-wv4in 4 года назад

      You are correct about the grammar. :)
      I like to fill from the nib, too. It seems the con-40 isn't a very good converter-- hello, Pilot??
      My first Lamy Safari was such a dry writer that it's about unusable, fwiw.

  • @lawrencependleton1420
    @lawrencependleton1420 5 лет назад +8

    What bugs me the most about the Con-40 is that ink gets stuck behind the metal barrier. I've even tried using a syringe to spot clean inside (the best hack for cleaning ANY other converter) and it still doesn't work. All in all, I just can't stand it. Eventually I gave up and got more Con-50's off of Ebay.

  • @yangyu67
    @yangyu67 5 лет назад +16

    I agree that using a syringe to fill is a great way and keep both the pen and the nib clean. But as you are choosing to use a syringe and not going to use the converter piston, why not just go ahead to fill an empty cartridge? A cartridge holds more ink and you will not hear those annoying sound from the metal agitator(s).

    Just save empty cartridges and fill those with a syringe. They hold more ink, and they are cheaper than converters.
    Also, in the case of pilot cartridges, you can actually reseal them by removing and resetting the plastic stopper inside them.

    When I first got my metropolitan, I only used the squeeze converter to clean the pen between colors. Since I got several sample colors I use the old empty cartridge to try it out. Since then that’s the only way I refill my metropolitan is by using a syringe and my ink that I got from Noodlers!

    • @vvatc
      @vvatc 5 лет назад

      so, is the squeeze converter that comes with the metro not designed for ink? I've been using a bulb syringe to clean out my nib and then trying different inks with the squeeze converter.

  • @abc-wv4in
    @abc-wv4in 4 года назад +2

    I was about to order a converter for one of my many Metropolitans, but I think I'll pass and just use the included squeeze converter. Pilot should make a better converter or at least go back to the con-50.

    Thank you for addressing this. I've been experimenting with the CON-40 for the last couple of months (my first use of a screw converter), after getting my first batch of bottled ink. So far, I've been compelled to use the convertor-directly-in-the-ink method, despite its inconvenience, and a presentation like this is something I badly needed to see.

  • @wittwittwer1043
    @wittwittwer1043 5 лет назад +1

    I also fill all my converters with a syringe. Those metal parts inside the converters are to keep ink from adhering to the inside of the converter by breaking the ink's surface tension.

    On another note: Will you guys ever carry the Penbbs brand of fountain pen?

  • @CaptainWumbo
    @CaptainWumbo 5 лет назад +2

    I just fill through the feed and turn the pen upsidedown to push the air out. So like Drew showed but with the converter in the pen. Very simple to get a full fill. If you fill from a syringe, you'll have a lot less ink because there's no ink in the section that way... And the section holds a lot of ink, often almost as much as the converter.

  • @Allthough
    @Allthough 5 лет назад +2

    I feel like Pilot designed their converters with an eye toward minimizing the bridging problems that I've seen so often with the "standard international" converters. Every design is a compromise. I think that the con-40 does a fantastic job in this respect. Unfortunately, the trade-off that they chose makes it tricky to get a full fill without resorting to fiddly / messy tricks to get that last air bubble out when filling.
    Honestly, I don't hate the con-40. I'll take the reduced ink volume or fiddly filling over a pen that runs dry half way down the page even though it's still half full of ink. If I have to stop writing to shake / tap a pen, or even unscrew the barrel to "prime the feed", I consider this to be a much much bigger design failure than a momentary annoyance during the filling process.
    Over time, these kinds of quirks associated with cartridge converters have caused me to favor just about any other filling system. Even the much derided lever fillers of yore, in my opinion, are a better and more functional design than the cartridge converter.

    Any issues ever reported with using the Visconti Travelling Ink Pot and the Con-70? I use it all the time to fill standard international converters and the Con-40/50 and vacuum fillers, but I am hesitant to try it with the Con-70. Does ink get behind the plunger or are there leaks? It’s an experiment I’m hesitant to try without asking first after I had one very inky incident with the travelling inkwell.

    I use the syringe when my ink bottles (or sample vials) get too low to fill from the nib. Otherwise I don't just fill the converter, because then you have to expend a lot of the ink therein to get ink flowing through the dry nib and feed. Filling from the nib might be messier to a degree, but you start out with a ready flowing nib, AND a full converter. The times I tried filling only the converter I tried priming the nib and feed with a syringe, as I saw some do in videos, but that was even messier.

    I know many people like to syringe fill, but at that point why not syringe fill an empty ink cartridge instead of a converter? Most of what you pay for in a converter is a filling mechanism that isn't used when filling with a syringe. And a cartridge holds more ink since it doesn't have to waste space on the mechanism.

    My method for filling my Pilot Metropolitan:
    Dip pen in ink and start to fill as normal. However, I stop just before full pull of the piston. Then, lift pen out of the ink and draw the piston the rest of the way back. This clears the fill channel.
    I then turn the pen nib up, and give a few taps to get the air bubble up top. SLOWLY run the piston towards the feed, pushing the air out through the feed. As soon as I see ink start to come out of the fill channel. I then put the pen back into the ink and finish filling.

  • @isturma
    @isturma 5 лет назад

    So now that you've filled it, how about a video on cleaning them? I find that the little "grille" in there is loose and gets ink trapped between it and the wall of the converter. Not a big deal if you're using the same color ink, but I use these on my Metros that get used to sample new ink colors. Also, one word of caution with the Vanishing Point - sometimes a little bit of air can get caught between the nib and converter and force a little ink out the end. I always have my nib section firmly in the end of the pen now to prevent the fountain effect. Great vid tho!

    oh dear!
    I guess you guys are new to using fountain pens
    .
    Put the pen in the ink bottle
    screw the convertor to expel the air
    turn the screw of the convertor to draw up the ink
    Half turn the convertor back to expel some ink
    take the pen out the bottle and wipe off the excess
    turn the pen with the nib up and half turn the convector back to pull in air
    This will force ink out of the feed into the convertor
    the feed in clear of ink
    close the convertor to force the ink up till it just comes to the nib
    turn the pen upside down so the nib points down and put it in to the ink bottle
    do the final fill
    your convertor is full of ink
    .
    sounds complicated but it is standard practice

    .
    Fill the pen emptying and filling the converter several times to exclude all the air
    Do not fill the converter the whole way
    Leave a 1/4 turn
    Turn the pen with the nib pointing up
    Tap the side of the converter to get the air to the top of the converter
    Turn the 1/4 turn to suck the ink from the top of the pen into the converter
    Then open the converter until the ink slightly comes out of the nib
    do this slowly
    Put the nib into the ink bottle and fill it to the end
    The converter will now be full with minimal air
