    The grammar lesson was great, but I especially liked the cultural bit at the end. Anyone can study grammar from any textbook but things like that are easily ignored. Thank you for that cultural/social lesson.

    Yuko, you are on my top 3 list of teachers. You manage the unthinkable ‐ to make a classroom interesting. That's a first for me. One question. I have an app that already translates the noun 料理 to cooking. Then why turn that noun into a suru verb, which requires the use of a nominalizer to turn it back into the noun that it was to begin with ?🤪
    What is the difference between these two ?
    父は料理が下手です。
    父は料理するのが下手です。

    I'm still confused that jouzu and heta in Kanji are 上手 and 下手, but 手 is pronounced differently and in 空手道 手 is pronounced te. 上 in 上野 is pronounced ue but in 上司 it is pronounced jō, 下 is also pronounced shita in 山下 and kuda in 下さい. One Kanji can be pronounced differently in different situations, and how I can remember them?

    ゆこ先生、ビデオは本当に面白かったです、ありがとうございました
    でも、私は質問があります。
    All examples in this video are with verbs in casual form. Is it correct to use `ます` form?
    For example, is it still correct to say: 私の友達はスキーをしますのが上手です ?

    • @YukoSensei
      @YukoSensei  5 лет назад +1

      Kostasさん、when you nominalize a verb, you have to use its plain form. Here, the plain form スキーをする does not determine the speech style (casual or formal) because it is not at the end of the sentence.
      1. 友達はスキーをします。← Formal
      2. 友達はスキーをする。 ← Informal (Casual)
      3. 友達はスキーをするのが上手です。← Formal because 上手です is ending the sentence, not スキーをする.
      In Japanese, the end of the sentence determines the main factors such as tense and speech style, not the middle.
      And to make a verb a noun (do → "doing" or "to do" in English) you always have to use the plain form of the verb in Japanese. わかりましたか?

    ゆこ先生、日本語のビデオはどうもありがとうございます! でも、質問があります. In the video, you explained that adding 「の」after a verb/action is the same as adding a "-ing" at the end of a verb/action in Englsih (for example, cooking = りょうりの), but I have learned in my Japanese class that I am taking that putting「こと」at the end of a verb would be the "-ing" in English. So, do both 「の」and 「こと」mean "-ing" in english, or do both have slightly different meanings?

    • @YukoSensei
      @YukoSensei  5 лет назад +3

      Sungmiさん、You can use both こと and の to convert a verb to a noun in Japanse. (like "cooking" or "to cook" in English") When you talk about like/dislike or good/poor at, you can use こと and の interchangeably, although の sounds more natural and conversational.
      母はりょうりすることがじょうずです。
      母はりょうりするのがじょうずです。
      However, there are cases when you can only use こと or の. I will list only a few examples here.
      == Only の is acceptable ==
      When you have "hear/listen," "see/watch/look" as the main verb.
      I heard a child crying.
      こどもがないているのが聞こえました。(correct)
      こどもがないていることが聞こえました。(incorrect)
      == Only こと is acceptable ==
      When you have "is/was" です, でした to end the sentence.
      My hobby is cooking.
      しゅみはりょうりすることです。(correct)
      しゅみはりょうりするのです。(incorrect)
      There are other cases where only の or こと is acceptable. I'm not going to cover everything here since it's too much. That's something you will learn one by one and remember as you proceed with your Japanese study. Hope this was helpful. (^^)

      DV-san, Do you mean to use TE Form to say "(someone) is skilled at doing..." as in 母はりょうりしてのがじょうずです (Haha wa ryoori SITE no ga joozu desu)? If that's what you meant, No, you cannot do it and the formation doesn't exist in Japanese.
