Why AirPods Have Vents On The Outside

- Ever since Apple's original EarPods, Apple has included small holes or vents on the outside of their signature earbuds. And that continues today with the AirPods, AirPods Pro, and even AirPods Max. So why are these vents necessary? Well, you can experience the importance of these openings for yourself by listening to a song with your standard AirPods, while covering the vents with your fingers.
Наука
Missed an important part imo.
At least for the AirPods Pro, Apple has cited the vents have been designed to also help equalize pressure in your ear canal by allowing air that would have otherwise been trapped to easily flow through the earbud itself. This leads to a less clogged more comfortable experience. I always thought I hated rubber tipped earbuds because of the pressure inside my ears, I even got the Galaxy Buds Live aka those Kidney Bean earbuds because of it. AirPods Pro however have completely changed this for me, they’re so comfortable
Was looking for this comment. This is the main reason for the vents, not for the sound or bass quality.
Google separately mentioned this too when introducing their Pixel buds on their keynote, means they saw it was a common issue worth highlighting and describing how they overcame it to make their buds better than others without the vents.
they are there for equalizing pressure as well as holding microphones for ANC
I thought they all had the vent though he even said the wired ones do
Interesting I thought that was the main and or only reason lol.
@@jackysbin3860 they do, he comment is just specifying that the vents on different airpods do different things, the ones on the non pro are for letting air go in and out, so that the bass will better, and the ones on the pros are for letting air go in and out of your ear canal so reduce air pressure since there is an air seal on the pros compared to the normal model
People say Apple doesn't innovate, but something as simple as moving the vent to the top of the earpiece is a huge advancement that just goes unnoticed. It's the little things that add up. Now, if only they got the Bluetooth thing to work properly, we'd be all set.
Innovation is different from improvement. We need improvement, not saying no to that. But innovation is also needed for new things completely. I know Apple is a safe company and want to provide only the premium experience to their users. But just wanted to let you know that's not innovation for itself.
@@ravitejaknts It's not going to change the world, but isn't innovation just novel improvements? They can't be expected to create the next iPhone every year.
@@darkwoodmovies Yes, even small changes can be considered innovation, but not just changing placement of the hole. It can be called Innovation when they found out a way to do it without the hole. Even this won't change the world, but it requires some technical input that's never possible before.
Samsung's curved screens and folding screens are innovations because it's not possible before.
Chinese phone's fast charging tech is innovation because it's not possible before.
Apple's iPhone is innovation because it's not possible to touch screen with multiple fingers before.
If it's possible before and then you are implementing it, then it's not innovation, it's improvement.
But Apple definitely has innovation in processors, software ecosystem features, etc these days. Waiting for Apple AR.
@@darkwoodmoviesjesus, guess who's the company who removed the battery percentage on their "smart" phones just to return it 5 YEARS LATER
and i'm saying this as an apple fanboy
@@chimkleefanboy what, u need a fan to use your phone?
Usually the vents on the AirPods would get clogged with earwax and get water damaged as well
Airpods Pro 2 fix this problem
this is why i wipe down my airpods with a cloth or something before putting it back in the case
yea that’s why they made a type of extended warranty for airpods pro 1st gen
Every time my left AirPod Pro slips out my ear and gets in the water, i immediately pick it up out the water and pat it with the dry cloth, let it dry then put it back… it survived thankfully
Honestly can't believe how much earwax people get on their buds. People just don't check up on their ears, ever.
These “vents” that Apple has been putting on their EarPods and AirPods are often called flow ports, reflex ports, or bass ports in the audio community. Most bookshelf or tower speakers will have circular holes on the front or rear that serve a similar purpose, and since acoustics in a room work differently than in an earbud, these are usually long tubes extending into the speaker box, made of either plastic, or layered paper similar to an empty roll of tape, but longer and narrower. Since some time in the 70s or 80s, these tubes have been of a calculated length and width. In other words, they are tuned!
Many speakers are also an air-tight box, which produces less bass volume, but often produces better bass definition for less cost, due to skipping the math part. In an earbud, however, this approach does not work well.
Hey Greg this video just made me realize all I had to do to solve one of my airpods being lower than the other was to clean it with a Q Tip. Thanks 🙏
I will add that this is kind off an ''Open back'' solution. For those interested, open back headphones/iem's do this to get a more natural sound. Great for drawing directional audio, when it comes to gaming, aswell music listening.
@@hmm8602 ah yeah👍🏼
Airpods are proof that open-back ≠ better
Not only does it let all the sound in and out, it also sounds wildy unnatural with virtually zero technicalities
And the fact that they added ANC to a goddamn ( improper ) open-back earbud proves that folks over at Apple are idiots
( Though Samsung's guilty of that too... )
What's crazy is if you get the wired pair of the Samsung akg headphones they have the same 2 way concentric chamber. They work entirely sealed similar to a sealed subwoofer to allow for deeper, faster and more tonal bass.

I need help, my right AirPod is only quietly playing sound on the outside speakers, I already cleaned it but that’s not the problem
every single earbuds no matter how cheap have these vents. makes sense to use them.
mine don't
@@Myskayt look closely and you will see them. unless they are super old they should have them.
"makes sense to use them" sounds like apple saw it and adopted it without a reason. They engineer their stuff from the ground up and if the vent wasn't necessary, it wouldn't have been there
always wondered about this.
Informative, thank you.
The vents are usually on almost al earbuds to also prevent building the pressure inside your ear canal which can build up the wax and damage your ear especially when listening to the loud music. Some earbuds use even the outside microphone holes for the ventilation or have a hole under the ear tip from there the air can change.
We got some “very smart” people in the comments who think everyone understands how the physics of sound and acoustics work. “Wow I’m so smart because I already knew this. Next video: why water is wet. That’s how simple this concept is to me”
Give me a break 😂
Exactly
Yeah, I honestly didn’t know what exactly the vents did until this video, so why people are shitting on it for explaining why the vents are there is beyond me. lmao
@@DJSpinSter2004 this guy just got a job at a tech store and thinks he’s that guy
I thought that speakers needing vents on the other side was common knowledge
@@dantevito1193 go ask your mum, a random friend etc. I bet they can’t tell you why they’re there
I've noticed that, at least on the AirPods Pro, the external vent helps with the Transparency mode. If they are set to Transparency and I cover the vents with my fingers, suddenly I no longer hear the noise from outside.
Cause they have the Microphones there most probably.
@@08_Matthew_08 No, the microphones are on the black patch on the outer curve. I can tell because they make a crackling sound when I pass my finger over them.
Oh when I turn on my AirPods Pro or touch the microphone they crackle and keep doing it because they fell out of their case when they accidentally ended up in the wash
@@astraldirectrix but the vents help with ambient noise to pass
can you do why does apple still sell the apple watch series 3 despite being slow and old? and not the other series’? (4, 5)
i have always wondered how the air pods detect if they are in your ear I soon found out that if you cover the front vent with your finger it detects that it is in your ear wether it is or not. i belive what you said but that front vent proboly has more tech and use then this vid describes
Please do a video of the AirPods Max and the issues they may have.
I love this video I missed it again while slepping
See this is one of those questions I have never thought about but once presented to me I really wanna know the answer
So how do I fix my apple ear buds. I was trying to clean the inside vents and pressed to hard and the vent is pressed further into the earbud. So if I look at it, I see a hole in my earbuds. My earbuds sound is okay but, the damage vent volume is twice as loud as my other earbud!
1:00 lmao I've got a friend that always uses his airpods mid class, and everyone complains the noise coming from his pods, even tho he say it is not loud, now I know the reason.
I had the thing where it was playing outside the airpod, took em to apple and they replaced both, good thing they are under warranty still
Very interesting stuff.
It looks nice
Mine lost how do I buy a new one I mean the black part in the vent
This was short and sweet but wouldn’t they collect more dust and debris being on top where it could sit there and get pushed in when you touch them and not slide off as easy like you’d think it would with them being on the side.
From where do u obtain all this information?

I’ve had that problem with my EarPods where the sound has gotten quieter sometimes even when I tried cleaning them the sound didn’t improve resulting in me buying a new pair

Cool video 👍
Nope, fourth.
Thanks for the reminder to clean my airpods with a Qtip!
My AirPods are clean but speaker moved and play in the outside hole. What can I do?
I have done those steps
funny that, by adding vents, you actually reduce the passive noise isolation so you have to overcompensate by adding more anc. its like 2 steps back 1 step forward
1:54 on the right for the AirPods Pro you did not circle the vents you just circled the microphone and the part that detects if the AirPod’s pro are in your ears, the vent is on the bottom
Bothered me too! Came looking for this comment 😆
@@j63636 yeah now i see that there is no grill on the bottom but what was circled in the video was the sensor for when it is your ears and the microphone so i don't know where the vent is
Are regular airpods actually open back?
to reduce ear pressure?👌
What about microphone block?
Well actually at 0:21 , those vents are for transparency mode not air vents, the air vents are the small vents on the other side

Can I change volume on AirPods generation 3 ?? (With AirPod) lol

Can you please make a vid on why apple still sells the Apple Watch Series 3
My classmate heard volume coming out of my AirPods while they were literally connected to my Chromebook!! I guess they had buildup and I didn’t clean them in time… 🤷♂️
what are vents used for? oh gosh I don't know. maybe vents are used for VENTILATION
This is why I like over ear headphones over earbuds because of better quality build.
IEMs are a rabbit hole you can go down blissfully
I thought this was a feature to listen to your surroundings manually cause the sound changes when covered
Do clean you’re AirPods Pro vents cause I didn’t and it causes buzzing and chirping
Space makes bass
Does Airpods Have Bass I Dont Know That.
They’re called helmholtz resonators.
Video suggestion: why apple does not sell older pro models?
On the AirPods Pro the main speaker grill is so deep that earwax never really has a chance to get to it and it doesn’t get clogged
Little tip: use bluetack to get dead skin & wax out of the grills
Make the next video about why Apple devices (Apple Watch, Macs, iPhones, and more) beside iPad Pro hasn’t support Wifi 6E yet?
these vents trap ear wax and dirt though :/ especially for the airpods pro
You save me
I recommend IEMs, there are some around the same price as these but sound way better!
Why do they have them?
But like this, they leak sound. I always hate it when an Airpod-guy sits next to me on the bus, I always hear some of what they listen to.

I wonder how this guy knows almost everything about Apple.
It's really difficult to clean these micro holes.
Why are y'all so salty about Greg making a video abt this lol. Like what were you expecting when clicking on a video titled "Why AirPods Have Vents On The Outside"?
Every in Ear has these vents though
My AirPods are completely clean but seem to be leaking sound. I can’t hear it well but everyone around me can. Does anyone know the issue? The AirPods are connected.
Do Airpods break if you block for a long time the vent???
I just wanna be sure bc I did it a few times, yk new airpods and all the stuff
Why iPads have no haptic feedback?
These are an improvement over the 1st gen buds. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxK5mc3yw4xA7Mf2j6k6n1Uqv_KUgrKdeM Pros: The fit is fantastic. This is the biggest plus. They stay in my ears when running and become unnoticeable. They are tight but comfortable. The sound quality is about the same as the 1st gen buds. They pair more easily with my LG G8 ThinQ and immediately reconnect when removed from the case. The sound balance is excellent, good but not overpowering base and clean mid tones and highs.Cons: The noise cancellation is good but perhaps a little less effective than the Bose ANC on the 1st gen buds. Passthrough mode as not as good as the 1st gen buds making it a little more difficult to hear conversations when in passthrough.
Cover them and bass goes bye bye
