Ted, I am so glad I ran into you and Monsterpalooza. I've been going over all your videos and having a blast. I am a makeup effects guy who is traditionally based in sculpture / mold / cast techniques. Fabrication has been eye-opening for me. Thanks so much for posting these.
Ray Shaffer Thanks. I too started in the world of sculpting and mold making. With foam once you make it your done.
dude you are truly a master of your craft and your teaching style is top notch.
+biglmiguel Thank you for subscribing.
I don't think I've ever watched a channel so intensely before. Im a student of the evil ed school. Haha. Great great stuff. I'm studying!!!! Thank you!
TeddyGator247 Stick to it, and thanks for subscribing.
thanks for your dream and insight, just started to make helmets and looking forward to start other great stuff, thanks for your time kevin moss rocky mountain adventure park & resort
Omg ted you are amazing and thank you so much for the channel. I am a costumer and have discovered how awsome a material foam is. Your foam helmet tutorial has taught me so much. Once again thank you for sharing with us all.
Your welcome Miguel.
Please send me a picture of you helmet when it's done.
Ok stupid question time lol how can I share pics of my current foam costumes with you
Ok found you on fb sent you a friend request
Post them to my Evil Ted Smith page.
As a post or in a message.
Thanks
Evil Ted Smith I customizing a MegaMan Zero (X) helmet. YOU were SO VERY HELPFUL!!! Thank you.
I am lovin' everything you do. Your tutorials are so easy to follow! excellent!
Thank you SO much for this. For whatever reason. even though I've thought about the costume I'm planning to make a lot, it never crossed my mind to cut the foam out at an angle. I feel a bit stupid, especially since I had been thinking about the edges as much as I have.
Its so great to see someone with a professional background actually contributing knowledge and know-how to the costuming/cosplay community. You sir have my respect and I look forward to leaning more from your videos.
hyperguyver2 Thank you Hyperguyer. I take it the you're a GUYVER fan?
Evil Ted Smith You would be correct, derived the name from the hyper-zoanoids and the guyver units themselves. A very unrated and unappreciated series if you ask me.
Evil Ted Smith Now I feel like an idiot, I should have realized you were in the Guyver movies! >_
hyperguyver2 Ha ha. That's OK.
Evil Ted Smith well I will be paying attention to your videos since I do have the ultimate goal of building my own personal Guyver suit.
Awesome videos! Keep them coming!
Very informative! Can't wait to try these techniques.
R.I.P. to headphone users after that intro xD
Thank you so much for this. Im making my whole groups costumes next year for our Dragon Age 2 costumes. This is my first time working with making props and Armour!
"A friend you can trust" Yep, I can see that going wrong! Duct-tape hair removal!
You do awesome work but you have a bad habit of putting your patterns on the top of your foam which makes your project smaller than the pattern by the thickness of the foam.
For material it doesnt matter but you are using foam with different thicknesses so shouldnt the patterns be enlarged a bit to compensate?
He kind of says it quickly, but he does mention that when he addresses the resizing question. Something along the lines of "You'll discover when you pattern these straight off your head, you'll notice they're going to be a little snug." He doesn't explain why, like you just did, but he does gloss over it. It's a good detail to know though, so I'm glad someone mentioned it.
phartattack ignore this guys comment. It’s all explained in the video. Resizing patterns
I love this video man. I'm a newbie with foam, so this is absurdly helpful.
Thanks Evil. I think you're great. You inspire me.
xyzvision Welcome, and thank you for wacthing.
Harbor freight has 4pack of 1/2"(ithink) anti fatigue mats that often go on sale for about $7-$8.
Johnny No Wow, what a deal! Thank you for sharing.
Evil Ted! My good friend Junis told me all about you! (all good things!). Your videos are inspirational!
Getting for ComicCon Detroit and as first time costume makers we are so glad to have found your channel. Just finsihed our Colonial Marine armor and pulse rifle. Our next costume will be much better thanks to you. Kudos to your camera operator for great coverage. Thanks
Wow, be sure to send me photos when it's all done.
Also wanted to chime in about the roll of foam. I used the exact same large roll but from Harbor Freight Tools. They sell it for $8.99 for an entire roll. They also sell 1/2 inch 2x2 squares in a 4 pack for $10.99.
thanks you for all your tips and videos also
Happy Crafting
Ted when you are painting or something timely don't cut out the vid but fast forward
Keep them coming Ted. These are great and very very Helpful!
HEy, love the videos. Hoping to take the ideas from here and make my own stuff once i have supply money. Can you do a video about attaching straps and the likes for things like greaves and gauntlets? Also, maybe some tips about working with thermo-formable plastics
can you make a video in detail how to make leg armour.
I just wanted to say thank you for your wonderful tutorials.
is there any particular part that should be enlarged for this to work? or could it be anything along the top or side of you head.
your explanations for everything is so easy to understand! thank you so much! looking forward to more videos! :D
fun stuff here sir, many of you techniques usually only seasoned pros know. not only that but some would consider it to be proprietary information and would refuse to share the knowledge. I enjoy your videos and you have made me seriously consider starting a video blog.and the tag line "evil ted talks" thats clever.
Thank you this good information, Ted
Ted: For what it's worth, you can also use flexible acrylic paints called "Americana", and "Folk Art". Since you have a Michael's out there on the West Coast, they're available there. The metallics of these acrylic paints are called "Goldens" and they come in 2oz bottles as well as 10oz bottles. I use a foam brush to apply.
I do RC aircraft made from 1/4" blue insulation foam or 6mm Depron foam, and spray paints can't be used on these because the propellants eat up the foam, so that's where the brushed-on acrylics come in. If you have an air compressor, and you do, then you can get an inexpensive airbrush kit for around $30 and there you go.
I really like your tutorials. You produce some very good stuff!
Your videos have been an endless source of help for me!!! Quick question: I'm making an axe and wanna get a nice edge and it's a pretty thick bit of foam, the edge I wanna make is more graduated and acute than 45° so do I just adjust the angle at which I hold the blade against my cutting surface? I'm finding it difficult to explain haha I hope this makes sense :)
If you're having trouble cutting it, you can sanding the angle down.
Ted, you have a tutorial that teaches how to make the armor legs?
+Juliana cadeco Not yet...
Hey! Love your videos! I have been searching for foam all over and Pep Boy's isn't local to me, and their website is impossible to dig through. Is there anyway you could post a link to that roll of foam you were talking about?
+Brianna Kelley Here you go..
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BCSA9SW?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creativeASIN=B00BCSA9SW&linkCode=xm2&tag=thevtech-20
Thanks.. Love your channel and I love your website! Keep up the great work. Can't wait to begin creating!!!
Thank you for your support.
I make my patterns out of something more rigid like transparency paper. Your drawing hand is very smooth compared to a lot of us.
This is great, I'm going to try making a costume for my son. I like the detail, piping, 45 degrees, Dremmel made 'bolts'.
I use a CNC Router at work, I wonder if I can put a piece of foam securely attached and dial in some designs to 'etch ' into a pattern.
Thanks for all your vidoes, Ted! I just following your channel and doing some crafting on the side. I had been given some old/used foam floor squares that are pretty roughed up. Besides good ol' soap and water are there any good cleaning agents that you can recommend (or even ones to avoid) for EVA foam?
What type of foam do you use? And where can I buy it. I 've been searching, but can't find any foam that looks like what you have.
Check my supply list..eviltedsmith.com/supplies/
Sorry if you have already answer this question but when painting the foam do you use the Plasti Dip before you start painting or after? I just don't know the order of what the base and top coat are suppose to be because i want the paint to stick to the foam without it cracking or pealing off.
Rikki Blaker I cover that in almost all of my videos. So start watching!
So I get e v a foam from any pet store? Cool.
If you really want to get picky about keeping the outer line of the enlarged pattern perfect, couldn't you also use a compass and put the pointy end on the original line and scribe a new line that's 1/4" all the way around?
Hi Ted, love your videos. Please can you tell me what you used to bond the acrylic dome to the wooden pole for your foam anvil. Thanks.
5 minute epoxy.
Hehe, making the helmet bigger seems so obvious now! My brother has a head cast, though my head is significantly larger. I thought I was going to have to buy a second, but it seems this technique saves me the trouble!
Awesome videos!
DEASTES Good news! Thank you for subscribing.
Wow great tip about the sharpener.
upside down 45 degree cuts.... brilliant. so clean!!! Ted, thanks for these videos, they are incredibly helpful.
Thank you for subscribing.
Ted, can you make a video on how to make a mouth-guard for your helmet?
Sort of like the Megazord and Gundam Heads for example.
Evil Ted: I'm working with foam for the first time. I want to make a seamless 90 degree angle. I've made 45 degree beveled cuts on the back side, now I'm wondering whether to heat-shape the foam, cement it, or both. What would you recommend? Thanks!
+MikeHartsough My adive for everyone is to do it. If it does not work as you wanted it to, try again.
Evil Ted kung fu is strong!
+biglmiguel My kung fu is very not bad, ha!
for a headcast if i don't have one could i use one made of polystyrene? they are really cheap but i don't know if they are good
+ColdFusionPower512 I have a supply list below my videos.
Excellent work, literally answered every question i didn't even know i had yet. keep it up man your vids are inspirational
You are the nuts!!! Truly remarkable. My mind exploded.
Thank you for your support.
Hi Ted I love your videos and I wanted your help in making a speed racer helmet can you help me at a shop
To help you make your SPEED RACER helmet. Here are some visor you could use. www.chutingstar.com/gath-replacement-retractable-visor-6
you have really taught me a lot about making foam cosplay armour you have inspired me a whole lot and you are like a mentor to me I really admire your work
There is no such thing as a "slight" 45. It is either a 45 degree angle or its a different angle. Sorry ted
Nathan Armstrong You are correct.
Great stuff, thanks for sharing your wisdom! I am looking forward to the next build!
Great channel, man. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
if you have a rural king in your area, i got a 4ft by 8ft thing of the thinner foam for around ten bucks, 14 if not on sale
+eppleptaurus Thanks for the tip.
Could you make a simple and cheap tutorial. I don't care what of, I just need one for my cosplay club i am starting in high school in a few weeks. You make amazing tutorials that are very clear and easy to follow and your costumes turn out amazing. I am trying to find a tutorial that can be done in about an hour to an hour and a half(not including painting) and that uses craft foam and hot glue and other stuff that you can easily buy and use for a group. If you can't make one, do you know of any? I was thinking maybe bracers or something similar
Thank you for all the great info! I'm looking forward to more videos.
Hey Ted. You note about using the clear Plastidip on top of the paint for added flex. I did that on my first go at cosplay (before I watched this) and have peeling issues with it so I figured I shouldn't use it as a top coat. Do you do anything else after your clear plasti or have any suggestions and I thought it might help keep it durable on top but it just keep peeling off and looking terrible. I haven't come across anyone else yet who's done this. Thanks for your time and the vids - helps us newbies out a ton!
+Lore Preuss Yes, Lore. I be having the same problem of it peeling off. So now I just use the floor wax to seal my paint job..
I have my supply list just below my video.
+Evil Ted Smith Thanks, Ted! I'll check it out!
Hello, I have a problem, I buy a pack of foamy Fuxion brand of 10mm thick blue and green, the problem is that every time I cut it with the razor this folds, what is wrong? Is foamy different? I bought new knives and still the foamy folds, what can I do?
The first thing I would say is you need a sharp blade, but you say you have new blades? I have not hear of Foamy Fuxion.
Could you send me a link so that I can see it?
Thanks for replying Evil Ted, I realize that it is the same fomi, I was able to achieve perfect cuts last night sharpening my razor with a sandpaper, I do not know if a razor sharpener is needed, thank you anyway, and you do an excellent job, by the way. Which I have subscribed to for a few months, Supporting me on your advice and I will continue to see you from Toluca State of Mexico, good day Ted, continue inspiring me.
Hi Ted. I love your channel. It's super helpful. I am having to do some work with EVA-30 atm, which is much softer than the EVA-60 floormat foam and I am having a hard time getting clean edges. I find that the dremel tends to eat it rather than five me a smooth edge. What's ur best advice for working with softer foams?
Hi Evil Ted,First off I appreciate you and your work it really help me mentally and now i do cosplay as hobby now.Anywho when resizing a helment do you add the half inch on the side of the helment and also on the top part?or do you just add some inches to just the side?I use a 23" head maniquin but still get a tight fit. Please if you get a free 30seconds even I would like your help. Thanks and have a nice day.
How can you stick a foam protector into a smart balance wheel???? Im tryin to make protectirs for mine so what kind of paste or tape or glue can i use to avoid markings?
+Caved Music To avoid marking, I use a pencil.
thanks a lot..... cheers...
Hi! Is it ok if I use corkboards? Hard to find eva foams in my area
I'm not sure, I never use cork board like that.
Any recommendations for doing a rounded edge? Right now i'm thinking making a straight 45 angled edge and then sanding it until it's rounded, but i'm worried about getting an inconsistent thickness.
Craig Jorgensen Yes, I show you how to in How to Make Female Armor video.
like TED Talks....but better. You are a legend around the Cosplay forums - Evil Ted references pop up all the time
Hello Ted. I would like to thank you for your instructions on creating helmets from foam sheets. I currently use your method for making masks and helmets from paper mache sheets. I did encounter as you mentioned in your video a close mask fit when I made my first helmet. My question to you is how much length do you have to add to your pattern to get a comfortable fit? Is it determined by the thickness of the material? Thank you in advance.
Awesome video! How do you keep your curved lines so clean? I bought some foam and snapped down to a fresh sharp blade, but for the life of me I can't make a smooth line! Even with a line to follow, it always pulls off to one side or another.
Your tip for the 45s is just beautiful, thanks.
Plasti dip also has hundreds of different colors
They do now!
Just watching this video. When you add the 1/4 in. to the side pieces, do you also have to add it to the middle piece of the helmet as well?
On just the one side, so when you make both parts it will be bigger.
Awesome, i was experimenting with it and just couldn't get it to work quite right. back to the paper model lol
Mr Ted .. can u use foam instead of cardboard to make the following mask... i want to make the mask with foam and then plastidip the foam to have a matt finish ...
#23: Batman Cowl DIY 1/3 - cardboard, cut & hot glue (with template)
Evil Ted, are you making your own pattern from the head statue only? Then how do you make a pattern from a 3d models? Are you making it from the head statue too?
hey ted . a favor please this for my project in PERDEV can u make the armour of achilles from troy
.... this is a please
awesome work!, i was wondering if you consider doing a metroid helmet?
Awesome stuff, can't wait for more videos
Do you have any tips or ideas on how to apply a plume to a helmet. Not like a full Corinthian type, just a ponytail type; like you would see on the vampire helmets in underworld
Ted, I'm about to start a helmet (Guard helmet from skyrim) do you think 10 or 12 mm thickness will do?
10mm Or 1/2 floor mat foam will work.
Evil Ted Smith thank you for the quick response ted! I just wanted to say your videos inspired me to start cosplaying, and have gotten me out of a deep slump of depression. I love them, thank you very much.
I'm glad this helps you get out of that depression. Pick a project, then build it.
Hi Ted, I have a foam head that I used to make my template but when I extended the lines on the side pieces the registration marks didn't line up with the ones on the center piece and the center is too small for the sides! How should I go about fixing this?
Hey Ted do you know how to make visor pieces?
henshinplex If you want a clear or tinted visor? I just buy motorcycle helmet visors.
love the content bud. thank you for what you do.
My pleasure!
Ted if you set a compas to the offset you want you can scribe your original pattern line the distance you are looking for.
WoW nice job
Hi Ted
These vids are great! I made my first foam helmet last week by watching the step by step process and to my surprise came out perfect..apart from the snug fit! I should of watched this video first duh!! Anyway, I'll try another one soon and use this video as my new reference, many thanks!
Thank you Kevin.
I really need to get one of those sharpeners.
i have a link below for the sharpeners.
You're so helpful, I hope I can do something like what you teach in a future and I would love work as an artisan, you're such an inspiration.
+Shiera Seastar Thank you for your kind words.
Can you put fiberglass on foam
You can but why?
Ted, you're awesome!. that's all.
(having great time making stuff with your help)
Amir Eliad Glad I could help!
Ted I'm working on a wolverine cowl and do you have any tips for doing around the eyes on a cowl
Yes, you can use thinner foam.
+Evil Ted Smith thanks ,I'm a bit nervous due to this being my first foam build and thank you for all the informative videos
When you cut the foam at 6:35 do u have to puch hard, or was it like cuting butter?
Like cutting butter…Just need to have your blade sharp.
Nice to know, thank you :p
Evil Ted Smith @ 5:50 or so... Exacto makes a 45* cutter that I use, but it doesn't cut deep enough. I MUST upgrade to a hot knife.
Yes, you need to get a box-cutter knife. That's what I use in the video.
I find your videos very helpful
Hello Ted, I've been working with foam for a while, and I would really enjoy how you get around two issues:
- impact fragility and wrinkling (I have largely stopped using foam and am moving to Worbla for that reason)
- how you fill seams while retaining flexibility (if possible)
Hi Ted!
Literally 15 seconds after I typed out my message, your video kindly addressed this!
hi, what name foam? because i'm in FRANCE, i dont no thank

Joelle Corcelle
Dude, I just watched this video and your number of subscriptions is exactly 2 orders of magnitude larger (100,420) than when you made it, far out!
Thank you.
Im wondering why you didn't use your flexible ruler.
I do for drawing lines on paper and foam. Not so much with cutting foam. I've ruined flexible rules with my knife.
Hey Evil ted how do you get the perfect beveled edge on curved pieces with a box cutter?
Patricia Salyers With a bad saw..
I only found your channel yesterday and have already learnt so much! Thank you very much for all the tips you have given me (and others) really helpful!
I am trying to make a sensei hat out of card board, but I don't know how to make the perfect circular shape. Can you make a tutorial on how to make a circular shape please. Thank you.
You just need to cut out a circle with a dart or two in it. I suggest foam instead of cardboard.
Thanks Ted another vid full of top tips!! I hope you make more of these! Question: what was your favorite job or creation so far?
Andrew Greener It's hard to say. So many films I've worked of I'm proud of, and so many others were just jobs. The thing I'm still proudest of is the Guyver unit from The Guyver. Thanks for subscribing.
When enlarging the part I might use a drawing compass. Thank you for this video, very helpful.
