You do awesome work but you have a bad habit of putting your patterns on the top of your foam which makes your project smaller than the pattern by the thickness of the foam.
For material it doesnt matter but you are using foam with different thicknesses so shouldnt the patterns be enlarged a bit to compensate?

    • @michaelparham1328
      @michaelparham1328 8 лет назад +4

He kind of says it quickly, but he does mention that when he addresses the resizing question. Something along the lines of "You'll discover when you pattern these straight off your head, you'll notice they're going to be a little snug." He doesn't explain why, like you just did, but he does gloss over it. It's a good detail to know though, so I'm glad someone mentioned it.

Ted: For what it's worth, you can also use flexible acrylic paints called "Americana", and "Folk Art". Since you have a Michael's out there on the West Coast, they're available there. The metallics of these acrylic paints are called "Goldens" and they come in 2oz bottles as well as 10oz bottles. I use a foam brush to apply.
I do RC aircraft made from 1/4" blue insulation foam or 6mm Depron foam, and spray paints can't be used on these because the propellants eat up the foam, so that's where the brushed-on acrylics come in. If you have an air compressor, and you do, then you can get an inexpensive airbrush kit for around $30 and there you go.
I really like your tutorials. You produce some very good stuff!

Your videos have been an endless source of help for me!!! Quick question: I'm making an axe and wanna get a nice edge and it's a pretty thick bit of foam, the edge I wanna make is more graduated and acute than 45° so do I just adjust the angle at which I hold the blade against my cutting surface? I'm finding it difficult to explain haha I hope this makes sense :)

    • @EvilTedSmith

If you're having trouble cutting it, you can sanding the angle down.

This is great, I'm going to try making a costume for my son. I like the detail, piping, 45 degrees, Dremmel made 'bolts'.
I use a CNC Router at work, I wonder if I can put a piece of foam securely attached and dial in some designs to 'etch ' into a pattern.

Could you make a simple and cheap tutorial. I don't care what of, I just need one for my cosplay club i am starting in high school in a few weeks. You make amazing tutorials that are very clear and easy to follow and your costumes turn out amazing. I am trying to find a tutorial that can be done in about an hour to an hour and a half(not including painting) and that uses craft foam and hot glue and other stuff that you can easily buy and use for a group. If you can't make one, do you know of any? I was thinking maybe bracers or something similar

Hey Ted. You note about using the clear Plastidip on top of the paint for added flex. I did that on my first go at cosplay (before I watched this) and have peeling issues with it so I figured I shouldn't use it as a top coat. Do you do anything else after your clear plasti or have any suggestions and I thought it might help keep it durable on top but it just keep peeling off and looking terrible. I haven't come across anyone else yet who's done this. Thanks for your time and the vids - helps us newbies out a ton!

Hello Ted. I would like to thank you for your instructions on creating helmets from foam sheets. I currently use your method for making masks and helmets from paper mache sheets. I did encounter as you mentioned in your video a close mask fit when I made my first helmet. My question to you is how much length do you have to add to your pattern to get a comfortable fit? Is it determined by the thickness of the material? Thank you in advance.

Awesome video! How do you keep your curved lines so clean? I bought some foam and snapped down to a fresh sharp blade, but for the life of me I can't make a smooth line! Even with a line to follow, it always pulls off to one side or another.

Just watching this video. When you add the 1/4 in. to the side pieces, do you also have to add it to the middle piece of the helmet as well?

On just the one side, so when you make both parts it will be bigger.

Hello Ted, I've been working with foam for a while, and I would really enjoy how you get around two issues:
    - impact fragility and wrinkling (I have largely stopped using foam and am moving to Worbla for that reason)
    - how you fill seams while retaining flexibility (if possible)
