I had a HIPRO Chinese 350-watt PSU running an older gaming machine with dual hard disks and a Q6600 CPU for years, and surprisingly, I never had a problem with it. What's crazy, however, was when I upgraded the machine and took out the power supply for another project, EVERY SINGLE ONE of the output electrolytic capacitors had popped their tops and leaked brown stuff in the PSU! I had no idea how the machine was still running stably, much less at full power with games, but I sure was glad I took the PSU out before it nuked the motherboard and the rest of the machine.

The rule of thumb: Every time you measure a voltage of a power supply, always put a load on one cable and measure on another cable that is not loaded. Else you measure mostly your wiring and connectors resistances. Measuring paper clip resistance is also not the best practise.

half a year ago my previous power supply failed, which I bought was second-hand. The problem I experienced was that the computer had a hard time starting, namely I had to press the power button multiple times. After a few weeks of doing that I found out that I could only start my computer if I flip the switch at the back of the power supply off and on and then immediately press the power button. I am not sure what part(s) of the power supply was failing, but I am glad that I bought a new one.

Same here, for me too its CX 750 psu. For a year it worked fine but problem really started during summer season when all our office air conditioner started functioning when the thermostat kicks in my pc will restart till the next cycle. Or when the water motor is switched on.
Few technician attended to the system but were unable to id. Finally our local electrician suggested to run the pc with the generator on wirhout any ac running.
For hours together it ran fine.
By the way only one of the pc had this problem while others has Antec, coolmaster psu in then were working fine.
So changed this cx 750 psu with a ordinary 450watts unbranded psu to testing. The system ran fine for hours even with ac's and water motor running in the background.

Also had weird stuff happen before such as keyboard and mouse turning off and screen going black but the pc tower would still be lit up and fans would still be spinning.

    • @temegron6695
      @temegron6695 4 года назад +1

@@cezarstefanseghjucan I've figured it out. My pc restarted because my gpu's cooler was failing so the temperatures went high up in gpu, it even hit the 105 celsius degree. My PSU wasn't the one to blame, when I changed it to other PSU -> no change in result but when I switched NVIDIA gpu in, it worked just fine like it should.
But you seem to have much better gpu model. Mine was the older and failing version of RX 5700 XT ASUS TUF X3 Gaming 8GT.
So the only thing I can request is you to stay away from ASUS TUF cooled RX 5700 XTs :D and try to switch the components and see what switched component has the working impact.

    • @cezarstefanseghjucan
      @cezarstefanseghjucan 4 года назад

@@temegron6695 Thanks a lot. In my case the fix was stranger, but the simplest thing possible.
I wanted to thoroughly test my PSU, so I disconnected the 24 pin motherboard connector. I then wired the green wire with one of the black ground wires (so that I can turn my PSU on). I then went to test each colored wire and the ground, with my DVOM, by using the 20 V DC setting. For each color, you need to have: Yellow: 12 V, Blue: -12 V, Violet: 5 V, Red: 5 V, Orange: 3.3 V, if you also have a White wire, it should have - 5 V. I did the same with my video card connectors. I then went to apply contact spray onto them and blew air on them. All was well within the specs. Still, I didn't understand why my video card kept dying, the temperatures were ok as well, having swapped the thermal paste. I also changed the power outlet for the supply cable going from out from the PSU.
However, when I booted up my PC afterwards, I saw a marked increase in V, still not enough for my liking, but from 11.520 V and lower, it went to 11.808 - 11.880 V. I was still skeptical, but I went on to act as everything was normal, and the whole thing was actually back to normal.
The only explanation is that the video card didn't get enough current under stress, even though I updated its BIOS and it was running very cool, basically, there was some extra contact resistance which was messing up the whole thing. The reason why it went to normal is due to the fact that I poked the DVOM probes into the contacts, effectively cleaning them, thus decreasing my contact resistance to a level that allowed it to work normally.
Thanks for the feedback and take care!

Just a comment: If I heard OK, you have 2 8 ohms resistors in parallel. (Eng is not my main language)
If you have two in parallel, that's 4 ohms.
    So in a 12V rail, (assuming it doesn't drop), that's 12/4 which is about 3 A, and when you remove 1 resistor, that's about 1.5 A less.
I know It's close to "an amp" as you said, but in reality that's about 50% higher than what you believe (hence 50% error).
Things change when using the 5V output.
However, I do agree that it shouldn't behave like that with such a small change in load.
I'd only recommend cleaning the PSU, as that sometimes makes electronics misbehave really bad.
    L8er!

So every time I play a game like Fortnite for example my computer will crash the game. I will get the stupid error thing saying that the application crashed. But the weird thing is that the other day my pc screen went black and froze, I then restarted It. It crashes about every hour or so. But then I keep restarting it and continued to play my game until it started eventually crashing the application or my pc within 10 minutes. I have looked all over the place to see what the cause is and no one can tell me. People was suggesting it was the game or my pc temperatures but I downloaded a software to monitor my temps and there all fine. So I started thinking and I went to event planner and the last thing that happened right before my pc crashed was kernel power. That had to be the cause because it does it when my pc is playing games and requires lots of power. Am I correct and suggestions would help and be very appreciated.

Always run quick hardware diagnostics first if you don't have good idea of what the problem is. Test power (with a cheap Power Supply Tester www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16899705003), RAM, CPU, Northbridge, and HDD/SDD. It takes 15-20 minutes. Then, go through and troubleshoot the software.

#2 Because you are Canadian, and I love Canadian's attitudes.
I can attest to what you've stated; last year i decided to buy an "XFX" (read: they are re-branded Seasonic) PSU for my PC, as I just wasn't willing to risk my PC on dodgy Chinese crap (again!).

How can you say for sure.?? Maybe you bought the cheaper quality, do you know there four different types of quality power supplies made just by Thermaltake?? And four types are the ones i know, there might be more.
      For example:
Themaltake Litepower 650 watt is around 400$
Thermaltake Smart SE 630 watt is around 600$
      Thermaltake TR2 600 watt is around 900 $
Thermaltake Tough power 700 watt is around 1400$.
Litepower series are lowest quality, Tough power are the highest quality, i wonder which one u choose to buy.

Got a problem with a psu that turns off by itself ... even without anything but the tester attached to it. The -12v says LL and the +12v rail goes up to 12.6v before shutting off. 3.3v and 5v seems fine and stable. Already replaced one capacitor that was leaking (16v 1000uf). Any suggestion what might be the problem and on how to solve it? Thanks in advance!

Looked at pricing all new capacitors and its not worth it, there are too many and the unit cost is too high when not buying in bulk so I'll just have to replace it.

I just had to replace the power supply in my NAS with a SeaSonic supply. The EVGA one I bought a few months ago was having issues where the IPMI would reset due to a separate problem and the system would click on for 5 seconds and click off. This would repeat for as much as 30 minutes without intervention. Would this be an issue with compatibility or is the power supply bad? It's still under warranty and I didn't have problems with it on another board that I tested it with.

i found no bulging caps or burn spots on msi tomohawk mobo, rx560 gpu or inside psu which is almost 10 yr old 750 watt antec.
and i still got a lockup within a few days even with psu sitting outside the case[should run cooler]

Stay away from the corsair CX series. The corsair HX series is very good though. If you take apart a PSU and saw oversized quality caps, transformers, and inductors, silicon cement holding down the inductors, large bridge rectifier(s) attached to a heatsink, and beefy heat sinks, it's a very good power supply.
