Why McLaren can't fix its biggest F1 weakness until 2025

  • McLaren’s start to the 2024 Formula 1 season has been solid but unspectacular.
    And that’s disappointing given hopes it might take the fight to Red Bull having been its closest challenger at times late last year.
    It’s far from being a bad start, scoring 28 points for an early third place in the constructors’ championship.
    But the performance level of the McLaren-Mercedes MCL38 in the first two events of the season has proved longstanding weaknesses remain.

      So all the RB 19 front wing variations and the DRS setup with all the rear wing variations all on public display were not enough for McLaren aerodynamic engineers to get a handle on what is needed for long slow left turns in 2024. And the exposed underfloor after the 2023 Monaco crash. And lastly that McLaren has complete control of front suspension geometry.
      This is amazing to me. Wouldn’t blindly putting the RB 19 design parameters into the McLaren simulation software reveal the RB19 aerodynamic design is working, not why or how just that it works. If the McLaren simulation shows that it shouldn’t work as seen on track by the whole world then your simulation software is flawed perhaps and you should get new software. If the simulation verifies that it works then hire more capable aerodynamic engineers who can reverse engineer better. Harsh yes but what is needed.
      The two caveats are car weight and car balance as fuel weight lowers according to experts and pundits. The Mercedes power unit and associated rear suspension assembly anchor points which impacts suspension geometry are beyond McLaren control. If this compromises balance and weight from the get go well get used to being on the second and third podium steps at best. Or go back to Honda on bended knee to get arguably the best power unit.
      Or am I missing something here?

      They've been fixing the 'turning of the car to give their drivers confidence' problem since 2019 😐 And since these new regulations in 2022 their straight-line speed/DRS use has been horrid. Seems they'll forever be stuck in the upper midfield/attacking pack.

      I think if we continued with the old regs McLaren would have been competing for wins. Outside of RB, few teams have really understood the ground effect cars. Add in the cost cap and now teams are limited in what they can change within a season (i.e. mercedes not redeveloping their chasis)

    • @etiennec8139

      That is how F1 works for every team that isn't winning right now, and really for most every team that is - the performance that the RB, Merc etc can find across the duration of each regulation set they dominated in isn't small either - forever something to improve, sometimes it might not get you peak laptimes but just make the car more predictable and driveable. Seems likely Mclaren may well still be the lead rivial to RB from what we have seen IMO - not many tracks that really won't suit them at all and the bits they are good at they are really really really good at - Historically not uncommon for the teams with smaller budgets to focus on one element so they can compete for points if not even wins on some tracks. Obviously to early to rule any teams out with such a long season though.

Turn in is much better, hence squared off 90 degree corners are no longer an issue. DF levels still highest out of the entire field. This is the cost cap era, you can’t improve everything at once. • @MsZeeZed
    @MsZeeZed Месяц назад

    The top speed is a bit of odd measures, as this video points out. The Speed Trap timings being in a DRS zone mostly measures DRS efficiency. In Spa & Monza last year when the McLaren had upgraded overall, its rear wing upgrades for those tracks were disappointing in effect, with it being almost having GP2 straight struggles at Spa until the track surface became damp and suddenly it was the fastest car on track. The need something more or they won’t be able to overtake into the critical corner breaking zones in Melbourne.
    Now Australia is a much faster lap than it was after the middle sector became straighter, but it has to be concerning how much parts of Saudi’s track superficially resemble the best & worst bits of Suzuka for McLaren. I can see the McLaren, once it’s lumbered through T1, walking away from most cars in the Esesses and Degnas before battling with the Hairpin & Spoon corners and being compromised onto the back straight until 130R, where it could be the fastest or not. Will that be enough or will the McLarens not be able to get further forward than 5th & 6th at either track?

    Despite sidepod differences and talks of revolutionary designs, all 2024 cars are an evolution of their 2023 brothers. The stability of the regulations makes it impossible for a team to produce a completely different concept (aero+kinematics) without taking a huge step backwards. Yes, Mercedes changed a lot in its car, the position of the SIPs, the suspension outer elements, the sidepods, the engine cover, but even they were bound to end up with similar kinematic characteristics.
    A lot of this regulation era depends on good, old suspension kinematics. The suspension has to provide the usual mechanical grip while keeping the platform stable and balanced through a relatively large ride height range.
    McLaren has produced a concept which is absolutely mighty within a very small ride height range. As soon as the lack of aero load raises the car, the floor loses a massive chunk of its downforce. As a result, they have to put as much wing on as they can get away with for the low speed without sacrificing too much straight line speed.
    Now, is that an aero problem, a suspension problem or both? It's most likely both, though the suspension is probably the biggest contributor. Does the team completely understand the problem? Probably not, otherwise they would've solved it by now. Can they solve it? Of course! They just have to find out which magic sauce RedBull are using in their suspension.
    Aggressive anti-dive and anti-squat seems to be one of the magical ingredients, though most teams seem afraid or unsure about getting it work. Mercedes is now running adjustable front top wishbones (at a significant weight penalty) because, I presume, they did not have the confidence or perhaps understanding to go with the most aggressive setup for every single race.

    The dilemma of F1 is that if your car needs development, then while you're fixing that, everyone else is making similar progress on theirs. So catching up requires a monumental effort - which is no longer allowed by F1's budget rules. The only way F1 encourages competition is by tearing up the rulebook every 5 years, and making everyone start over.

    • @michaelantonius321
      @michaelantonius321 Месяц назад +1

      Sadly that's the reality of the grid for now. The only thing that can shake down whole paddock is massive rule chance every so often. 1 or 2 teams will dominate, while the rest is playing cat and mouse game with these 2 dominant teams.
      What they do with plans to increasing budget cap for lower team does help soften the blow that lower teams needed to catch up with the dominant team, but in the end, it's all coming down to understand how to play in the grey area inside the rule book and to get away with as much as *legally* as possible.

      Mercs era was different… it was engine based only team that had any familiarity in the tech was mercs. So the money means nothing with no knowledge. Now this era is based on chassis and underfloor downforce. Teams know what they have to do they just can’t do it due to the cost.

      @yannickvaz694 Месяц назад

      @@KVF26 Yeah true.
      Personally I feel the best solution is to have a variable cap (similar to the wind tunnel testing allocations). P1 in the standings will have the lowest cap, while P10 has a much higher budget to work with in the following season. That way the champions can't overspend (which will keep backmarkers alive), and the teams behind will have more opportunity to catch the leaders (assuming they have the money to spend). It's not the perfect solution, but I feel it's a step in the right direction.
