    Glenn Hammond Curtiss was born on May 21, 1878, in Hammondsport, NY. Both his father and his grandfather died when he was 4 years old, so Glenn and his younger sister, Rutha, were raised by their mother and grandmother.
    From a very young age, Glenn was fascinated with learning about how things worked. He would often walk around town with a screwdriver, offering to fix squeaky doors or broken doorbells.
    He began his career as a bicycle racer and builder before moving on to motorcycles. As early as 1904, he began to manufacture engines for airships. In 1908, Curtiss joined the Aerial Experiment Association, a pioneering research group, founded by Alexander Graham Bell at Beinn Bhreagh, Nova Scotia, to build flying machines.
    Curtiss won a race at the world's first international air meet in France and made the first long-distance flight in the U.S. His contributions to designing and building aircraft led to the formation of the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company, which later merged into the Curtiss-Wright Corporation. His company built aircraft for the U.S. Army and Navy, and, during the years leading up to World War I, his experiments with seaplanes led to advances in naval aviation. Curtiss civil and military aircraft were some of the most important types in the interwar and World War II eras.

    The Wright brothers, Orville Wright (August 19, 1871 - January 30, 1948) and Wilbur Wright (April 16, 1867 - May 30, 1912), were American aviation pioneers generally credited with inventing, building, and flying the world's first successful motor-operated airplane. They made the first controlled, sustained flight of a powered, heavier-than-air aircraft with the Wright Flyer on December 17, 1903, four miles (6 km) south of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, at what is now known as Kill Devil Hills. The brothers were also the first to invent aircraft controls that made fixed-wing powered flight possible.
    In 1904-1905, the Wright brothers developed their flying machine to make longer-running and more aerodynamic flights with the Wright Flyer II, followed by the first truly practical fixed-wing aircraft, the Wright Flyer III. The brothers' breakthrough was their creation of a three-axis control system, which enabled the pilot to steer the aircraft effectively and to maintain its equilibrium. This method remains standard on fixed-wing aircraft of all kinds. From the beginning of their aeronautical work, Wilbur and Orville focused on developing a reliable method of pilot control as the key to solving "the flying problem". This approach differed significantly from other experimenters of the time who put more emphasis on developing powerful engines. Using a small home-built wind tunnel, the Wrights also collected more accurate data than any before, enabling them to design more efficient wings and propellers.  Their first U.S. patent did not claim the invention of the flying machine, but rather a system of aerodynamic control that manipulated the flying machine's surfaces.

    I loved this history on flight. Never knew of Curtis and that he started 2 communities in South Florida that I passed everyday!

    Curtise and Bell examined the Wright wreckage at Ft. Meyers and came away with the knowledge of the Wright's invention of controlled flight. Instead of wing warping, Curtise came up with the aileron.

    I’ve always wondered why Cleveland doesn’t have any aircraft industry, even though Curtis Aircraft was here for a while until they moved to San Diego. We left it up to that wunderkind and sociopath Glen Curtis.

    I do like that curtis and wright eventually started the company curtiss wright out in Shelby north carolina. When I was electrical engineer for a metrology company, they were one of our customers. Had to go out there a few times myself to fix some problems.

    Nicely done - a rare accolade and tribute to this true American genius behind early aviation, despite the massive amount of attention given O & W Wright. Considering all of the grief and control that the Wrights and their financial backers tried to levy on Curtiss, he still innovated and ran circles around them with his designs and variations of engine technologies and aeronautics. Much respect is owed to him for his contributions to aircraft and motorcycles. The Glenn Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport NY is a wonderland of his inventive initiative and should not be overlooked.

    I always smile that people dispute the Wright Brothers being first. They were first. It seems that every second country has somebody that was before the Wright Brothers, but for strange reasons, never told people of their achievements until after the Wright Brothers flew.

      The U.S. also has its own controversy with Gustave Whitehead in 1901.
      It is an interesting story, full of mistery.

      Oh the irony since the wright brothers only provided the photo in 1908... There is no evidence of the 1903 flight...

      @@newone-gd9sk Except for photos, witnesses, contacting The Press to invite them see further flights, paper records of years of work...
      When they demonstrated their machine, it was more capable.
      Inventing the wind tunnel.
      Replicas have been built and they work

      Are you talking about that one photo with a ramp and was made public in 1908? Literally no replica worked, what are you talking about...even Nasa tried and they said that without a catapult AND a strong head wind it cant take off... @@kentl7228​

    Missing from this video is Gustave Whitehead's first flights in 1901 in Bridgeport Connecticut, 2 years before the Wright Bros. and possibly as early as 1899.

      There was no ramp either. And are you saying planes from a carrier don’t fly because they use a catapult? Of course it wasn’t a catapult anyway. Also there where no standard, the only early group that set standards was not started until several years after the Wrights flew, in france. Next, when accused such when they demonstrated the flyer in France they the proceeded to fly directly off the grass on just the skids. Oh yea, forgot the pictures and witnesses

    This video misses Gustave Whitehead who flew 2 years before the WRONG BROTHERS in Bridgeport Connecticut in 1901, and as early as 1899. There are approx. 10 eyewitnesses who signed affidavits, Bridgeport Connecticut Police logs and numerous Newspaper reports about Whitehead 's achievements. This video needs to be removed and corrected.

      Nothing has been refuted especially when Whitehead had 10+ eyewitnesses sign affidavits they personally saw Whitehead fly in 1901. People don’t like the truth, it’s upsetting to those that believe the story about the Wright Brothers and venomous campaign they waged against Gustave Whitehead.

      Nothing has been refuted by anyone except the Wright Brothers were 2 years too late after Gustave Whitehead flew in 1901 in Bridgeport Connecticut. This was reinforced to me by the very Park Rangers who work at the Kitty Hawk Memorial in NC. They willingly and openly showed me their proof of this.

      You can challenge Greg on that, he offers $1000 for any person who present evidence for a claim that Whitehead flew before Wrights.
