I can recall a story my Dad told me about someone he worked with. His coworker finally bought his first brand new car (this was in the 60's) and had signed all of the paper work. They then were going to the car in the garage area where a service guy was going to pull it up, after it had just been washed. The car came flying up, didn't stop in time, and hit the building pretty hard. This happened to the guy who had just bought his first brand new car and never got a chance to drive it. I guess he turned to the salesman and told him that they are going to undo the paper work right now. They did and he walked out the door.
I always schedule maintenance, so if a shop or dealer does not get done when they said they would(within reason) they are going to be dealing with a very unhappy customer. I understand the run-around on walk-ins, but if I schedule a service 3+days in advance, no excuses will cut it(screw someone else around, you made a commitment for this job).
I also learned the hard way to book them in for a Monday or Tuesday, never the end of the week so they can take the car home for the weekend. One dealer tried to tell me 'it was more secure than leaving it at the shop'.. Err, right, and my name is Enzo Ferrari..
@@brolohalflemming7042 Wait what? A dealership actually admitted that someone was trying to take YOUR car home for the weekend? And tried to make an excuse for it? The e46 m3 is an amazing car. One of my dream cars. This story was great! I wouldve been furious. I hate when dealers do shady shit like that. They said they weren't gonna even drive it yet it was damaged, repaired, and made a different color. I wouldve done the same thing and make them get me a new one.
My immaculate E46 M3 got keyed when I parked it at my gym. I filed and insurance claim. The shop who did the work absolutely ruined it, the insurance company admitted poor craftsmanship done by the shop, however they let the shop assess the damages made to my vehicle and they have waaaaay underplayed it. I have had the damages assessed by 2 indipendet shop and currently still battling it out with the insurance.
My dad leased a 2013 750 Li from the same dealership and the ownership experience was terrible. Not just because that specific BMW had engine and transmission issues through the ass, but also because the dealership was so shrewd and secretive when it came to the car's issues. Over the entire 3 year lease the car was in the shop for at least 4 months in total. Once they had it for a whole month and refused to tell him what was taking so long to fix it. They tried to appease him with driving a brand new 7 series for a few weeks so good to know that strategy has been used a lot by the dealership.
This guy knows how to tell a story exactly the way it all went down. Straight and to the point with no hesitation. "My PR temperament kickin in". Someone is gonna get ruined.
Dang, Emile. You got my blood pressure elevated just listening to that story. I would have to say you handled that a lot better than most. Keep telling the great stories, and keep up the great job Vinwiki.
When i worked for Toyota we had a brand new Land Cruiser go missing before it could get government registered. No clues, could have been missing for months and was only noticed at a periodic stocktake!. It caused a huge problem, got loads of people involved and had to go through an insurance claim. About 2 weeks after it was all settled, a greasy 17 year old welder drives this thing in through our front gates and just dumps it. As he is about to get in the car picking him up im like "whooaaaa whats this mate?"..... it had been at the engineering company getting some steel work done (it was destined for a mining company, nothing unusual we used to get dozens done a month), but no one had been to go get it and they had let it sit there for almost a year!!! (wasnt anything to do with me, i just knew when people dropped cars off to get some more info haha!!)
Have the same story... back in 2005 I purchased a brand new e46 m3 at our local BMW dealership..At the time it was my second e46 m3 (had a 2004 traded in to order a 2006) and the dealership’s lot attendant hot dogged in the car and wrecked into a light post during first service....Almost fought the lot attendant when found out what happened (truth took sometime to surface which made me more angry) Was 25 at the time and similar to the story, the car was very much out of my price range but lived at home and absolutely cherished the car... After incident I spoke to a lawyer who provided similar advice.. Dealership ended up settling with me outside i of court, signed a NDA but I made out handsomely and still own the very car from the incident... Great story guys!!! Can absolutely relate to how stressful it was...
Wow, this dude can definitely tell a story well. I can legit feel the anger & he’s got me right there with him as if it’s happening today. I saved up 6 months & paid cash for a dream car with a pretty similar situation and I can completely understand the out of body anger haha 😅
"If it's gonna get ugly, get ugly early." This is probably the best piece of advice I could give to a service dept manager. Accidents are inevitable, but you only make it worse trying to cover it up. On the other hand, it surprised me to hear him talking about the way he treated the dealer's car when he's the kind of person who didn't even want them washing his after a service. 🤷🏻♂️
To clarify, I didn't beat on their car, I just drove it everywhere. And let my friends drive it to Las Vegas. I didn't abuse it at all. It was a loaner car, so they expected it to accrue miles.
Most likely he was kept on payroll and the repair bill was garnished from his paycheck, while at the same time the dealer made a claim to their insurance. If the mechanic complained the GM would say it was to cover the rise in the insurance premiums. Then the mechanic's hours would be cut and he'd be given $h!#y assignments until he quit.
Hope not otherwise what's the point of the insurance everybody fucks up now and again. Hell you gonna head hunt the low wage worker because he can't afford the lawyer to play with these true crooks. Including the presenter.
When I worked for a Chevy store, I got into an accident with a Suburban. I was taking it to a stereo shop to get the stereo fixed. The general manager asked me how I was going to pay for the damage and I told him I am not going to. Either the insurance will pay or the dealership will, but according to the law in the state I was in, I was working for the dealership at the time and therefore I was not personally libel. This is a different case as the employee didn't have permission to take the car out, so it could go either way.
God I love these stories! They could be 2 hours long & the only way I’d ever know is if I miss a meeting or appointment. Time just goes away. Can’t wait for the next one.
All dealerships are crooks. In Toronto, the dealership would laugh at you in this situation. If you tell them I'm calling my lawyer, they would say go ahead...
Same thing happened to me. I bought a Porsche MacanS and they had to “prep” the car. It’s Thursday and I said okay Monday afternoon I’ll pick up the car. I get a phone call and hear Wednesday it’ll be ready. No phone call so I go Thursday. Oh hey it’s ready. Car was resprayed, orange peel, sand blasted, & probably the worst paint correction I’ve ever see . Caused a scene and never ended up leaving the dealership until the GM & some upper management gave me the keys to a MacanS with $10k more in upgrades for the same price we agreed on with the previous model. Can’t say anything bad because they made it right but never again dealing with that Porsche dealer
@sup the most plausible ending is that the guy in the UK created a new plate with the Mexican cars number. Ed’s theory that he got it out of Mexico with the factory’s help is way less likely
Dude I was stressed for you. As a BMW guy, I know the feeling. My wife pulled my New M340xi outta the driveway to allow the service van park on our driveway. All I heard....still gives me the chill. She ran my baby into her SUV...wheels, passenger side.....all I can say is: I still love my wife.

Wow, I never watch this channel all the way through. This one had me watch till the end. You have got to post a part 2! Did he ever find out what happened to his car? Did the sales guy wreck it? Did the mechanic take it home and wreck it? So many questions!
As a "high-end" dealership employee and a car guy, this is nightmare inducing/PTSD-triggering. I've worked at previous dealers where similar shady behavior occurred, and I can tell you that practically EVERY TIME the dealer gets caught. If you don't get caught, you get cocky and slip up the next time. Own your mistakes, be honest with the customer, and while they may be mad at first, they will appreciate your honesty as long as you do everything within your power to make it right. I wish every shop/dealer employee was required to watch this video as part of their training.

The E46 M3 is my dream car since I was a little kid. Love the tail lights. I want it silver as well. Hearing him talk about how amazing the car is and how much he loves it makes me so excited. I’ve been waiting 19 years to be able to buy one of these. Hopefully it’s not too much longer.
Reminds me of my experience with BMW. Had an X5 and had one of our local BMW shops lying to us about what was happening. Took it in for a regular service and they kept leading us on. Eventually found out they had damaged some engine parts during the service and had to order them in from Germany. Meanwhile, our loaner was a base 3 series so we weren’t making out quite as well as Emile in that regard. Last BMW we ever bought.
Had nothing to do with the car being brand new. Most people get their cars serviced at a dealer anyway. Also, used car salesmen are worse because they often are selling you a car they know is junk.
Nothing wrong with buying a new car. Just, as much as you can, service it yourself. I bought a new Corolla in 2020. This coming year, when it's due for its first oil change, I will do it myself. Toyota offers two years of free maintenance for every new car sold. I'm not going to take advantage of this free offer. I'm just going to presume that the oil changer person at the dealership will figure out some way to mess up the car. Less hassle for me to do it myself.
@@hamsterama I get what you mean but you should actually take advantage of those free services. I hated changing the oil on my volvo & free service for 2 years on my new toyota is awesome. But I wouldnt trust the dealer for anything other than oil/tire rotations. And only if its free.
@@hamsterama As a former dealership employee who's seen this happen way to many times including lawyers involved. Here how its going to go should you need to replace the engine because it start burning a ton of oil, throws a rod or some other catastrophic failure. Dealership will ask for all records of oil changes done by a certified mechanic. Failure to provide said records will result in dealership and corporate saying no new engine your fault not covered under warranty. Like i said seen it with lawyers involved and that whole certified mechanic and documentation of the oil changes was always the sticking point of the many engines i saw replaced under customer dime not warranty.
@@Cohiba2 But I thought that it doesn't void the warranty if you change the oil yourself, as long as you keep records. Like writing down the date and time your changed the oil, and keeping all receipts. If a car starts burning oil or throws a rod, whether the oil was changed or not would have no bearing on that. That's a design flaw, not a maintenance issue. Right now, I'm a couple months away from the oil needing changed (oil needs changed only every 12 months, and I bought the car in March 2020.) I think what I'll do next month is go to Toyota's website and fill out a contact form, asking if I can change the oil myself without voiding the warranty. And if so, what records I need to keep, or if I have to buy the oil and filter from the dealership. That's the only way to know for certain. I just don't trust the clowns in the dealership. It's not their car, so they won't care. At least if I do the maintenance, I know it's going to be done right.
I got happier and happier the more things he listed that he did with the 7 series while he had it. No dealer takes that good care of a customer unless they REALLY F'd up and are really exposed. So glad it worked out. 😊👍

I called Penndot and they told me that if I'm pulled over the car is basically considered stolen from the vin. I called the dealer and SNAPPED OUT! idw to go back f**k that. I was very fortunate, my first car was a Steel Grey e46 M3. I’m now almost 40 and would LOVE to track down that car. In my mind Emile responded in a perfectly rational manner.
Feel your pain! Never bought a new car. But had a Eagle Talon awd breakdown three times on the way home before draining its own transfer case in the garage, the dealership stopped answering the calls after they fried the ecu with a paper clip. Years later bought a 535 bmw and found the turbos were both blown, thanks a lot car god, thanks a lot! Good luck out there!
My first car was an E30 4dr/5spd. This story speaks to me. I currently own 2 E46s. Maintaining them is a pain, but you'll learn a lot. They are well worth it.
They probably didn’t tell him what happened for legal reasons, but it’s easy to put 2 and 2 together. Someone saw the new M3 and decided to take it for a spin and crashed it then the dealership tried to help cover it up.

"we will fix this" putting paint on a brand new car isn't fixing it...its devaluing it even more! not to mention the half ass job that body shop did...yeesh
Holy crap that really sucked, one of the best story’s tho keep up the good work
I can recall a story my Dad told me about someone he worked with. They did and he walked out the door.
rule of thumb when servicing a car, when they say a car is done on this day...you come there on that day no need to tell them..just show up
I always schedule maintenance, so if a shop or dealer does not get done when they said they would(within reason) they are going to be dealing with a very unhappy customer.
In my eyes, finding out that some dude from a dealership would be taking/had taken my personal vehicle as his own for a whole weekend? That's perfectly legal and justified grounds for murder at that point! No words need to be said after this. Just my foot in his ass.
@@danielnelson4881 Yup. Although the excuse was probably more due to having nearly 60 miles extra on the clock than when I'd dropped it off. I took the opportunity in good spirit to negotiate a generours trade-in on that car, discount on a new one, and never went back there again.

I had a E46 M3 with a SMG gearbox... I'll put it this way, it sucked so bad I paid to convert it to manual...

It’s the same gearbox... just with electro-hydraulic actuation 👍🏻
He paid for new and perfect...and he wanted new and perfect. I get it, I understand. If I screwed it up, that's on me. If someone else screwed it up, that's their problem.

They didn't lend it to someone whose M3 they wrecked did they?
I don't believe Emile ever specified which dealership was involved?
@@shih-hanchow8945 He mentions pulling out of the dealership right onto PCH in Newport Beach. Only one BMW dealership fits the description.

Dealership ended up settling with me outside i
of court, signed a NDA but I made out handsomely and still own the very car from the incident... Great story guys!!! Can absolutely relate to how stressful it was...
We need a milestone Q&A with this guy
Wow, this dude can definitely tell a story well. I can legit feel the anger & he’s got me right there with him as if it’s happening today. I saved up 6 months & paid cash for a dream car with a pretty similar situation and I can completely understand the out of body anger haha 😅
I live for Emile’s stories! Was a pleasure interviewing him for my last project in High School LOL. (Dream Job Project)
One of the best stories in a while, nice work putting this one up
I feel your pain brother it was like I was there with you. One year ago I bought a low miles 2002 M3 SMG for my retirement gift. I love that car.
Dealers can be good and bad. All on the same day.
9/10 times it comes down to customer behavior
Of all the places, my best experiences have been with Kia and Hyundai dealerships despite their horrendous reputation.
This is by far one of my favorite stories so far! Y’all are awesome keep it up!
He never said what happened to the mechanic that wrecked it. I want to know the dude was fired and had to pay for the damages.
i bet there was Hell to pay since the GM was involved.
Agreed

Still waiting for the El Chapo F1 video Ed
@sup the most plausible ending is that the guy in the UK created a new plate with the Mexican cars number.
Ed’s theory that he got it out of Mexico with the factory’s help is way less likely

Thank you, Vinwiki, this was a wonderful story with a satisfactory outcome where a dealership has mistreated a customer. There are ways, if we keep our cool and get the right support and advice that folks get good results.

My father went through the same thing when he had ordered a 06 yellow z06, they tried to color match and fade the yellow but it was a terrible job.
I love these stories and this one was right up there. Awesome story and suspense.
Great story about how a dealer will lie, lie, lie.
Wonder what they advertised the old E46 as. "Brand new, clean, one owner, only 1200 miles, quality paintjob. Juuust a thousand over sticker." :/
This was incredibly intense
Reminds me of my experience with BMW. Had an X5 and had one of our local BMW shops lying to us about what was happening. Took it in for a regular service and they kept leading us on. Eventually found out they had damaged some engine parts during the service and had to order them in from Germany. Meanwhile, our loaner was a base 3 series so we weren’t making out quite as well as Emile in that regard. Last BMW we ever bought.
This is why I can never bring myself to buy a new car.
Best story of the year!!!

Damn this is why I fell in love with this channel. I LOVE the stories. I once (yes years ago) bought a cavalier from a dealership that I never got paperwork on and couldn't register it.
Good luck out there!
...and the Honda dealer totaled out my CRV during a headlight recall by somehow destroying the entire AC system 🤦🏼♂️

My first car was an E30 4dr/5spd. This story speaks to me. I currently own 2 E46s. Maintaining them is a pain, but you'll learn a lot. They are well worth it.
Definitely a stronger man than me. The service rep, body guy, and GM all would’ve been layed out if it was me...
He's a great storyteller need more of him!
Wait, so what the hell happened to the car that they needed to repaint the entire side to begin with??
They probably sold it preowned
tech decided to take it for a spin and side swiped it... not that hard to figure out if you listen to the whole story...
They probably didn’t tell him what happened for legal reasons, but it’s easy to put 2 and 2 together. Someone saw the new M3 and decided to take it for a spin and crashed it then the dealership tried to help cover it up.
Must of been a high rank in the dealership. If it was a low tier employee they will throw him under the bus and say they fired him(even if they didnt).
