  • Liverpool's search for Jurgen Klopp's replacement looks to have led them to Feyenoord's Arne Slot. The Dutchman has enjoyed two fantastic years in the Eredivisie, and looks like a natural fit for the club's style of play... but is he?
FourFourTwo's Adam Clery takes an extensive look at his style of play and assesses why he's perfect and, also, why he isn't.

I can't believe I've done this, but having just signed Sergino Dest on football manager and seen his little face in some of the clips I was watching, I've gone and stuck him in the Feyenoord line-up graphic. Sincere apologies to both him and you, dear viewers 😅 A long week already...

One stat shows Feyenoord with the lowest team with long balls played on place 20? Eredivisie only has 18 teams not 20..
About Arne: he is a very good people manager and the press like him, but: when he loses he Will blame the ref, the pitch, the wind etcetera.
He does not like to lose and search for excuses. I cant remember him throwing his players under the bus. Klop sometimes also did these silly excuses after a lost match so maybe they are the same in that.

Slot seems a solid coach with greater flexibility than Klopp's rigidity - which has been both a virtue & weakness in his career. however, people are missing the wood for the trees. Liverpool have spent less than West Ham, Everton & Spurs net on transfers in the last decade - let alone the teams they actually compete for trophies with. They have required alchemy from an all timer coach with a perfect spiritual fit for the club to stay in contention for trophies, and they still had TWO seasons written off by shit squadbuilding leaving them with no fit CBs (20/21) or no midfielders who can run (22/23). Klopp & the quality of VVD & Mane/Salah/Firmino attack earned them the PL & CL but they were constantly let down by individuals who were there ONLY because FSG put no money into the club and stick to this strict 30m net spend turnaround each year. Karius, Adrian, Lovren, Henderson, Luis Diaz all not good enough but signed/retained because the proper options for a CL-competing team were too expensive. without Klopp, this resource gap will sink Liverpool. they might make top 4 but they won't win another PL or CL with their current owners. Boston cannot believe their luck that they ever won anything, their aim has only ever been to stabilise Liverpool with CL revenue and grow asset appreciation. Klopp has turned their gamble in the low hundreds of millions into a club worth north of 3 billion, but they will never put money in to get Liverpool back to the summit. FSG do not care about winning the CL. they will not risk 200m cash infusions to compete with nation states. Liverpool will lose Trent & probably Salah this summer, maybe Alisson too, and having the worst owners in the top half of the prem will catch up. this is partly Liverpool fans' fault - they could have hounded FSG out during 20/21 for unilaterally withdrawing the club from the european cup - the competition that defined it and made it a giant of the sport. FSG are also a big factor in Klopp's burnout, his own health aside. Klopp has had to miracle make just to be in contention with the resources provided, and then he has had to field the questions and pick up the broken pieces after each near miss or written off season. the flip side to this is Klopp will probably end up with 3 titles by proxy now that the league has normalised the principle of point deductions. minus 3 points retrospectively for City takes away most of their titles, especially two won vs Klopp by a point - leagues effectively decided by PGMOL. huge loss to the prem because Arsenal will burn themselves out competing with cheats too.

Biggest change in styles is due to going from Kokcu to Timber, who has been improving massively this season. Van der Vaart said that he was better than his brother in the academy so maybe a latebloomer? But slot made him and Kokcu improve a lot. The players who shine the most are the centre backs in his system, wingers i dont know much because he hasnt been lucky with getting the right winger who can do what he wants.

I find it so interesting how many managers play exactly like de Zerbi, pulling in the press and playing through them but the only team it doesn't work for is de Zerbi's Brighton 😂

I think if there is a vacancy in the RW area, that Harvey could fill it amazingly well under Slot. He's more aggressive than Salah, more adaptable, and maybe less selfish.... I think Dom and Harvey will thrive under Slot...

Why is it bad for Trent playing wide? He done it before Klopp started to use him as an inverted fullback. At that time him and Robinson were battling it out for the most assists for the season

Desperately trying not to get too excited, and yet looking forward to seeing how we're playing in 2-3 years time (when let's face it the training will have kicked in and any squad issues sorted.) Quansah could become immense in this system which would be great for England too. Looking forward to Gomez getting a chance as well. I can see the biggest upheaval in the squad happening up top... Not necessarily due to lack of quality but due to attacking style.
What I am anticipating though is not being top of the table after five games and the internet losing its tiny little mind and calling for S lot's head... The owners seem better than that though. 18 months needs to be minimum for a manager unless they do something absolutely horrendous like try to make money on the side from an Arab sheikh as soon as they get their dream job. But what Muppet would do that?

I am eager to see more flexibility. We didn't have the right DM for a 4-3-3. Endo can't reliably break a press (ex. Atalanta matches), and Mac Allister is more of a playmaker than a defensive anchor. I would be relieved to see a proper 4-2-3-1 in use. I also want to give up on inverting TAA. He played more like the bad version of Zinchenko in that role and less like the best version of TAA.

Liverpool fans can rest assured. Arne Slot is one of the most talented young trainers. High pressing, intensity and attacking football, coupled with superior tactical ability, make Arne's teams an almost unbeatable team. Intelligent, communicative and convincing. It is not without reason that arch-rival Ajax was defeated 10-0 this season (over two games). I would prefer to keep him in Rotterdam for another season, but give Liverpool his leadership. A worthy successor to Klopp and in no way comparable to the bald one from Manchester United.

There are a few Liverpool players not quite in the right position. Stick Nunez wide right, Szoboszali centre, Diaz wide left. Then Gakpo up top. Sell Salah use the funds to rebuild defence and add another holding midfielder.
