KILLER ONE POCKET: Grady MATHEWS vs Keith MCCREADY - 2003 DERBY CITY CLASSIC ONE POCKET DIVISION

- 1-POCKET - In 2003, Grady “The Professor” MATHEWS, 60, and Keith McCREADY, 45, contested at the Derby City Classic 1-Pocket division. Both players, in their prime, favored hustling and gambling over tournament play. Grady, an expert at all pocket billiard games, claimed 1-Pocket as his favorite game and he gets credit for building the popularity of that game to great heights. Keith who also traveled the country in the 70’s and 80’s matching up, had his share of tournament wins over the best players of that era. In “The Color of Money”, Keith played the part of Grady Seasons. Can we ever forget his favorite line, “It’s like a nightmare, isn’t it? Enjoy the match.
Danny DiLiberto and Shawn Putnam were in the commentary booth.

These old matches never get old!
This is what I go to sleep to every night. Not just this match but loads others. Before the Commentary started to suck.
Danny was being a little ridiculous not wanting people to know Keith was drinking. Pool leagues and tournaments are played in bars and pool rooms, and almost all of them sell drinks, beer and mixed drinks, so everyone knows that a lot of pool players drink. Then the tournament director jumped in and said look at all the budweisers Keith has had, and even had the camera man zoom in on them, it was so funny. Danny did not know what to say after that, I loved it. it's a pool match, people dont care if the players are drinking.
Hearing Danny back then vs. now is a world of difference.
*wish you put the time stamp when the director came in. could not find it. Anyway, yeah, big deal he is drinking. There are many old videos with players having a beer, especially at the casino venues. Nick Varner. Also, Smoking Cigarettes was common while playing. WHEN WE HAD FREEDOM*
@@PostUp_Time I was a 3-pack a day cig addict for many years. My job allowed me to light a new one off the old, and I actually got into credit card trouble from buying more cigs than I could pay off at month end. Thankfully, during a serious upper respiratory infection, I was drugged asleep for most of a week on codiene cough syrup, and somehow when I could breath freely again I had no desire for cigs. Stupid me, I did try to smpke one, but coughed so much that was the last time. Every time I felt like a smoke I put my thumb between two fingeers and inhaled good fresh air, thankful to be free from that awful addiction. I never once got down on smokers because I remembered it was only an accident that I ever quit.
Pool rooms were smokey, and most tables had cig burns on the rails, especially bar tables. But Keith was a guy who developed the fatty red nose from drinking, and would have been smart to set the alcohol aside during serious pool play.
p.s. there was no fredom in being addicted to cigs. They put ammonia in them to give a rush, which is the addiction, then added floor sweepings to save money. For decades they had paid shills saying smoking was good for you, and worked hard to get teens hooked - with Marlboro Man, Winston tastes good like a cigaret should, and other things like Kools.
Keith was well into his WC Fields era . . . Lol
@@PostUp_Time I don't recall ever having the freedom to play pool in a smoke free environment....huh funny how that works both ways. I could choose to not go, and so could you! That's freedom sir.
Love seeing the Professor doing what he loved! He was a master and one hell of a character! Lots of fun to watch. Thanks for posting!
Our pleasure!
Keith is high as a kite I never noticed until today I've watched this 100x
Met Grady in Albany GA in 92 or 93 at an exhibition at Snaps billiards. Loved him and loved the pool scene in Albany during the early 90s. Awesome
Man what a treat this is. Thank you for uploading! 🙌
Also loving the old Grady matches. Keep on!
hahaha first time I heard the "hold my money" story, it was $13,000...gets bigger every time
According to Keith it was 14,000.
Inflation...
"It gets bigger every time"....just like your mother....
Pro players and Grady himself have mentioned how he pretty much ended up broke.
However, I know he raised a son that became a doctor.
Also, as a fan, I have learned so much from Grady's eloquent and humorous commentary.
His Accu-Stats video on 14/1 is awesome. If you enjoy playing 14/1, his video is well worth purchasing.
The video of Grady playing Pat Fleming is awesome as well. A wealth of 14/1 knowledge between Pat and Grady.
The man contributed greatly to pocket billiards.
ALL PRO PLAYERS END UP BROKE. YOU ONLY MAKE MONEY IF YOU WIN. AND AS YOU GET OLDER ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO WIN FOR SOME REASON. PLUS MANY PLAYERS WILL TELL, THEY ARE GAMBLERS AND LOSE WHATEVER THEY WON AT THE CASINOS
Yep I know you’re right when they get that nose open they go off
Grady was never broke and he definitely never said that 😂
Why are you concerning yourself with his finances?
GRADY MATTHEWS VS GRADY SEASONS....FINALLY!!!
you mean finally that you seen one of many matches as such lol. welcome to the 40+ year old club.
@@godjhaka7376 It's like a nightmare, isn't it...
I seem to really enjoy when a match is played on the green cloth.
Thanks for uploading!
Our pleasure!
Both are waaaay past there prime days, grady being so old ,, Keith just too many buds or whatever, lets not be too critical, and just appreciate the effort!
you're the only one being critical by leaving such a low-vibrational comment reflective of your entire life.
@@godjhaka7376it's the facts of it,,,lol, and what do you know of my life, you need to chill!🙄
Great and entertaining game and commentary
*NEW ERA OF PLAYERS NEVER BANK LIKE THIS. MCREADY; WILL NEVER SEE ANOTHER SIDE ARM STROKE LIKE THAT AGAIN!*
*SEATS ARE SO FROM THE TABLE. GREAT TO SEE MCCREADY HAVING A BEER, OTHER MATCHES THEY MADE HIM HAVE IT PLACED OUTSIDE THE PLAYING FIELD*
Danny has been colour blind since the dark ages! Those greens and blues...
I used to watch Buddy Dennis beat Grady in one pocket and Grady would ban him from the pool room for a month , lol
Good TImes!!!
The Professor playing
Keith trying to apply the Ether and getting busted for cheating
Those were the days.
Best 1P scoreboard EVAH!!!
Why don't other producers use this format???
Great video...always try to gleam a tip or two from these older vids. High Karate...
Watched video and saw myself in the crowd at 46 minutes....
Danny “I will disagree with any shot that I don’t pick myself “
Grady was not in his prime here imo he started to have problems with his nervous system . I remember seeing him in action one day and he was fine , 2 weeks later he could barely play. It may have even been a year or two earlier than this . He was always animated , but his movements became exaggerated , like he was off balance. I really liked Grady and learned immensely from him, it was heartbreaking watching him deteriorate and the cowards who took advantage of him when he was obviously ill.
Grady was a better banker than he's showing in this set. I played him one pocket in Columbia SC and he banked 3 or 4 every rack which he beat me 60% of letting me out on 7.
*POOL HALL OF FAME DID MCCREADY DIRTY BY NOT ADMITTING HIM INTO THE HALL OF FAME. ALL OF HIS PEERS OF THE TIME HAVE BEEN ADMITTED*
*EXCELLENT COMMENTARY, EXPLAINING STRATEGY OF GAME. WOULD HAVE BEEN PERFECT IF COMMENTARY EXPLAINED THE DIFFERENT RULES AS THEY WERE GOING ALONG PLAYING*
Danny never shot a bad shot in his entire life, him and Incardona dont like any shot that anyone shoots, and tje guy's he is talking about would spot him 2 balls, Hate that shit
Love Grady's playing
32:52, was just wow
Was that Ike Runnels in the background to the right?
probably it was derby city classic. You know ike was there
Grady probably could’ve given me 12-6 the week he passed away 😞
Hell he could have given me that after he passed away he was so good
I used to sweat Keith's action at the old Hard Times in Costa Mesa when Keith was 17. He does not look the same guy here. He stayed down with fierce concentration, his grip on the cue was up at the very end of the wrap, not like at the butt like he does now. Long stroke with a beautiful long solid follow through. He shot like God, and everyone knew it. What a difference. Why?
Drugs
You're full of s.....
The short answer: drugs and alcohol, period, and if Kieth had to tell you the truth, he would say the same!
LOL! Macredy shot the WRONG ball after his long break outside!
McCready would have won that match with better pool posture. Jumping up on every shot cost him big time.. Simple fundamentals of the game..
Anyone count the number of times he says “I think”?
It's hard to beat this form of one pocket knolage and methods.😮
You can see Grady's health issue is showing in this video. He could still play but you can see the body sway and movements.
he is 60 in this video. keith is 45 but looks older
i love pool and i have been following it for over 40 years. i have seen hundreds of pro matches. one of the many observations i have made is the innumerable (bullshit) stories of "how great this guy or that guy was at hustling" or "these 2 guys played for 50 straight hours for $10,000 a rack and NOBODY MISSED A SHOT" or "a 13 year old kid was walking around with $36,000" etc. etc. NEVER match the REALITY of the "pros" (who are supposed to be the same people all the stories are about) who miss tons of makeable shots, can't bank or play combos and all for some CHUMP CHANGE tournament prize money. all you ever HEAR about is how some "legend" was THE GREATEST EVER and NEVER MISSED a shot, but i have NEVER SEEN any real evidence of anybody playing like that. pool is the LOWEST paid sport BY FAR. 100 years ago it was more popular than baseball. maybe the problem is the sport is mired in BULLSHIT, and the pros are mostly bums who LOOK like bums and don't really play much better than the good players in any pool room in the world. it's fitting that the most famous pool player of all time "minisota fats" a man who stole his name and persona from a movie, was a total BULLSHIT ARTIST who could barely play the game.
if youre referring to keith, i agree that the stories never ever have correlated with any match ive seen him play. even with bucket pockets of the 80s/90s. but he is a hero to a lot of people nonetheless. and i feel i should respect that, people need heroes. grady was one of the best conceptualizers and theorists in one pocket, but never the best in execution. efren changed the game though, and it has evolved even more since with frost, chohan, alex. one pocket now is cutthroat aggressive, because they all shoot straighter and know their opponents do too
@@terpet8729 well, he's a good enough example of what i'm talking about. as far as i can see he's nothing but an alcoholic/drug addict and bullshit artist. i have never seen him win a match or even play well. he fires at balls too hard and sometimes they go and he looks like a hero to the ignorant. i'm sure he has no money and he even dresses like a bum. so why in the world should he be looked up to by anyone on earth?? if people need heroes like you say, let the heroes be genuine people of substance who have actually achieved something or overcome some obstacle and not some derelict who makes up lies about how great he is or was. Grady had tremendous knowledge of the game and was well spoken and intelligent, but he lost way more than he won (again, i'm going by what i see and not what supposedly happened in some made-up story). even disregarding one pocket, how often do you see any pros play perfect 9-ball for 9 racks in a row?? ALMOST NEVER. yet all i ever hear is how great (insert name of player) was and how they played for tons of money, for days at a time and never missed, yet there is NO VIDEO or any proof of this beyond word of mouth accounts. where are all of these magical players who never miss?? and why has the high run record of 526 balls stood unbroken since 1954??? YEAH, I KNOW, joe blow down at the pool hall ran 2,000 balls BUT THERE IS NO PROOF, but jack blow and the entire blow family swears it's true!!
@@capacola262743 i agree with you almost to the letter, but i think you have to consider that for a lot of people emotions are more important than facts. there is a tendency in the USA to glorify and mystify just about anything, and pool hustlers like keith fits perfectly into the wild west-like mythology that people like to cling onto. especially in a time of european and asian dominance of the sport. we can both see that he has horrible fundamentals. he would have zero chance against filler or svb, obviously. but then again thats true about alex higgins too, compared to players of today, and nostalgic snooker fans cherish him like a demi god while sober onlookers rightfully point out that his pot accuracy was lower than todays amateurs.
@@terpet8729 i agree, especially about emotions being more important than facts to most people, but FACTS are MUCH more important to me. i have been a realist all of my life and it's frustrating as hell living in a world where everyone else is in the magical land of make-believe and it seems to get more so every day. I feel like the little kid in "the emperor's new clothes" except the crowd still "sees" the clothes after i point out their nonexistence.
You do realize you don't have to play great to be a great hustler? Usually a hustler just knows how to get the right game.
As for players who never missed, I personally watched 6 different players run at least 8 racks of 9 ball in a row without missing.
One guy ran 27 straight racks at the music city open over three sets of 9 ball, he won the lag three times and broke and ran the set out. He is not even known as a pro, he was a hustler who made his living playing pool though.
Dud and Grady Seasons
grady is still alive?
No, Grady passed away in 2012.
Keith seems to have lost some of his side-arm stroke, but he hasn't lost his love for the alcohol.
His stroke is the same, and who cares if he's drinking...it's pool. Maybe you should watch church choir videos....
Grady is good with balls hanging😂
OK, I must be missing something. Rack 3, Grady breaks the corner ball in runs 2 and ducks. His next inning he combo banks the 3 and ducks again. But then, he inexplicably spots the 3? They're playing even, right? And he didn't foul that I could see, nor did he make a ball in the side pocket.
I was wondering the exact same thing. Rewinded multiple times to see what I missed but didn’t see anything. Would love to know if someone knows what happened there.
Okay I went back and figured it out. You have to go back 55:05 where he makes his first ball but scratches at the same time. He pulls out the ball he pocketed, as well as a borrowed ball essentially since he’ll owe his first pocketed ball later. You’ll notice the score for him is -1 at this point. Then at 1:02:10 he spots his first made ball to get him back to even. The other scratch was so much earlier in the game it was easy to forget about.
Danny doesn't like to brag 😂
In game 3 Grady with 7 to 0 he fouled when he hut the 2 bal in the corner
What the fu*k is this Keith has the next break? I thought this was 2 out of 3 match. Danny was a 10x better player than a commentator!
A little more neutrality please!
Efren Reyes wouldn't let these two guys score 2 balls in any game.😊😊😊
match went hill hill. also Keith McCready has won and lost playing for the cash with Efren.
its so sad that there cant be any pool match on youtube without some Filipino starting randomly talking about Reyes in the comments
Keith has beaten Efren for the money many many times. In fact he beat he'll out of Efern playing 1 pocket for huge money the game was 10 ahead 1 pocket. So to lose you literally have to have your ass completely kicked.
not good one pocket--
Oh well.
Bet they could still beat you.
@@matthewdebord4492 I'll take that action.
1 pocket is only fun to play, nobody likes to watch. Also, if i drank beer at work i'd be fired. A terrible example McCready sets, even then.
Who are they working for? I believe they are self employed and when you are SE you can drink if you like ! Jealousy is a bad look !
I used to think i shot better pool when drinking years later I find out this is false every time I see keith play and lose he is sucking on a beer cut the beer out man.
Seems like Danny is always wrong…
Not ALL the time. 🙂
You are so very wrong my friend, Danny in his prime was a he'll of a money player and also won 45 tourneys a long the way, seen him run 10 racks of 9 ball in L.A.on a tight pocket table, and to appreciate him guess ya got to have some miles on ya. Love his commertery.

One pocket is great to play but it's not a TV game. That's why Nine ball is so popular as a viewing medium
The commentary is super annoying, talking about what they should be doing from the sidelines. Some of the commentary is correct but the main guy has all the answers, super critical of any mistakes. Heres the deal your not playing..
