Japanese selvedge denim, what a lovely phrase. Japanese selvedge denim, ain't no better waaaaaay! Today we are looking at the cheapest selvedge denim you can get (kinda), the cheapest denim you can get (kinda), and then of course...the most raw Japanese craftsman denim in the entire universe. And of course...what kinda of comparison video would this be if we didn't include Levi's jeans? This time the 505's.

I bought a pair of jeans from Old Navy around 2004 - the "carpenter pants" with a big hammer loop on them. Those jeans literally tore like paper after a few weeks.
Old navy has really thin clothing. Doesn’t last. Same thing happened to me.

Over the years, and through many different brands of denim jeans, here’s one thing everyone needs to notice when buying a brand new pair of jeans: Pay attention to the placement of the button above the zipper. You know the one that you use to button up your jeans after you zip them up. Pull the waistband. Yes zip the jeans and button them and then stretch the two sides outwards . Now look at the button. Does it sit right? Some will have too much fabric behind them, some will not have enough space, some will have too long of a piece of denim fabric in front of them, and some will lie flat and look perfect. It’s how the person sewing it matched and lined everything up. Be aware and find the right pair for you!
Michael wold be the only person to talk to the paramedics about why they shouldnt cut his jeans open while on the way to the hospital due to a car crash caused by him talking about jeans over the phone. Love your videos mike. :)
I actually was shot in the leg during a mugging, and when the paramedics were driving me to the hospital, I wasn’t so upset about them cutting off my Levi’s or underwear. But I asked them not to damage my Red Wing Beckman heritage boots. I untied one while the medic untied the other. A few days later I wiped away the dried blood from them and now eight years later, I am still wearing the boots. Your comment made me think of this.

The George were a great fit on you. I wear less expensive denim to work and they are easily more comfortable than every pair of selvedge I own.
gotta say George is one of the few jeans that fit a skinny guy like myself really well in a straight cut. a lot of jeans even in like a 31 waist leave a lot of room in the thighs and booty

I'm American but have spent considerable time in the uk, and found some of my current favorite Levi's in charity shops for 5-15 pounds

@@tofu7397 I live in Sweden and the most common of the American jeans brands you find in thrift stores are Lee, typically around the same price you've quoted for the UK. I don't really like Levi's at all, my favourite is Wrangler.
In Latvia, Europe, I get slightly worn second-hand Levis for 5-10 euros max.
George jeans are some of the most ok jeans I’ve ever owned. I’ve had “good branded” jeans fall apart on me after a few months but George jeans have held up for me for years. They are not bad.
If they look good and they fit, the brand doesn't really matter. I'm actually thrilled when I find cheap clothing that fits really well. Because then I know I look good and I spent a lot less.
I've had really good luck with Amazon brand clothing. Amazon Basics or Goodthreads, something like that. Under $20.

I've never been a designer type of guy so I always stuck to good ol Levi's. But through the years I've noticed the quality of Levi's going down while the prices went up. I wear 514"s in same size and everyy single one of them look and fits different.
I decided to look around and bought a few Calvin Klein jeans and found them much better looking for less. They all fit exactly the same and how i like em. Straight, loose but not baggy and definitely not skinny.

Yea this is why I thrift my denim... old Levi's are so common at the thrift and are great quality for the $10 - $15 they usually go for. Sometimes I'll run into a denim gem though since lots of local thrifts don't know about denim quality. I have boxes and boxes full of denim, maybe 150 pairs at this point lol. I screen print on them, sew, etc. and sell them.
I had a couple CK jeans from Costco. Never had jeans fall apart as fast as they did. The denim itself was the point of failure.
I love Levi's, but only the older ones, I haven't bought a new pair in years. Vintage is now the way to go, as they got natural fades and weathering that makes then a lot cooler, plus they're better quality and usually the same or half the price of a new pair.
Once I realized $12 George was almost as good as $49.99 Levi’s I stopped wasting my money on celebrity branding and just bought a fuck ton of Walmart, bottom shelf, Jim beam quality, slavery jeans. Do not regret.

i know this is not the intended takeaway but my own George has been very good to me. He’s nice and heavy. not very breathable, so bad for a southern summer. but like 2x thicker than my Levi’s and way better for workwear. I’ve put holes in almost every pair of Levi’s I have. George is still going strong. and he fits me really well

That's interesting. Wrangler jeans, also sold in George's home just fall apart after a year or so of daily use and frequent washing. Levi's last probably four times as long. I wonder how much longer George lasts than Levi's.
@@KabobHopeevery pair of wranglers I've owned would rip out in the crotch despite having more room there than most other brands. after about the 4th pair doing this while climbing into the back of a pickup I swore off the brand for life.
I got a couple pairs of Levi’s but most of my jeans are GEORGE. I dgaf about style. My jeans are made to protect my legs as I’m running through the jungles of Texas!

Aside from Japanese denim. I have found Mexican made Levi's to be good quality.
My favorite Levi's were made in Mexico.
They have really good stitching. And are perfectly symmetrical in cut.

Levis point of failure is the music I have to hear in Kohl's to get them. Also their fits are pretty inconsistent between pairs? Thank you for the shoutout here
The first 501's I had failed in the crotch, then they replaced it for free and the second is way too tight for the same size.
I didn't magically put on muscle, (I wish) but you're right they are inconsistent.
Levi’s fits are inconsistent between pairs because they are all made in different factories in different parts of the world and with varying levels of spandex according to color.
I’ve purchased three pairs at a time of the same cut in different colors and received one that fit very well, one too loose and one that looks like my little sister bought them.
That's because you are shopping the rejected pairs that Levi sends to khols to get sold at a discounter.
They are literal defective pairs.

I am right now, wearing 500 dollar Japanese jeans. Bought in LA. But I paid 20 bucks for them. Another 25 to tailor. I shop the clearances at the super high end boutiques. Would never consider paying more than 100 bucks for a pair. But generally 20-50 clearance is more my speed.

Also, Japanese denim manufacturers have the original USA looms. They were sold in the 90’s.
China still makes replicas of them. It's really old tech and they still make powerlooms like that. They're obviously not steam operated, but I wish the fucking Chinese would made good denim. All Indian denim is made with synthetic dye which can be frustrating.

@@varun009they have them as specialty brands in China, but for the most part real denim is slowly going away as Jean obsessed 80s and 90s subculture comes away and China get rid of its last textile exporters. Jeans are just too hot for the weather in China, and they can't stretch to add extra layers in the winter and you can't pole dry them quickly. Most of the so called jeans in China now are really just denim colored Chinos.

Denim is a twill weave cotton fabric dyed with indigo that originates from France (specifically the city of Nîmes.... De Nîmes....denim).
Twill weave is a weaving technique, just to get nerdy on you (sorry 😅) is where you pass over two threads then under on. It creates diagonal lines on the fabric. It's a really common and a very durable weave so you see it a lot, including in high end suits once you know what to look for.
Indigo is a also a very traditional plant based dye. It's not very dye fast which is how you get that lovely fading on the thighs and knees where the Indigo has literally worn away. Indigo plants will usually produce that nice blue color, but skilled dyers can get them to produce other colors as well.
I really like hearing how the sausage gets made, I was into Japanese selvedge denim a few years back and eventually decided to wait a bit before getting a pair.

The apparel company I design for is actually based out of Montreal, where naked and famous has a production facility, it was super sick getting see how they make their jeans, highly recommend if you want to shop smart and sustainable

Literally went to a resale shop by a transfer station in a rich community and someone had donated/thrown away a batch of Naked and Famous jeans. I got each pair for $1. spent $4 in total for 4 insanely expensive jeans. If you are the rich person who donated/threw away your jeans that had barley been used (I can tell because it's not even naturally faded yet) THANK YOU!

I got the nice Levi’s premium when I went to the Santa Monica store. The Japanese denim is so comfortable. First time I put a lock knife in my pocket the denim just started to split.. it was weird very little pressure on them but I think maybe I washed them to many times. They were 511

I'm so glad the algorithm recommended me this video. I had a phase during college where I got into wearing raw denim. It started with selvedge raw denim that I happened to find at Gap (which I happened to be working for at the time), then The Unbranded Brand, then Naked & Famous. It makes me a little sad that I ended up throwing away a few pairs of the pants that I put literal years into, wearing them day in and day out and not washing them until about a year (one of which I washed at a beach using sand) to see how beautifully they faded and seeing my natural whisker patterns. I wish I kept them and found a denim store or alteration place that was willing to repair them and just have them displayed somewhere as a sort of memorabilia. It's really cool to see this video go in depth on the MIJ series. I remember one of my biggest purchases (at the time) was the Made in Japan 2 which I thankfully still have. Unfortunately, I don't think I can fit into them and I kind of wish I got more time to spend wearing them and beating them up to see how much more the indigo would fade. I think I remember washing them after about 9 months but I guess I didn't wear them long enough or they were made exceptionally well because the amount of dye lost was fairly minimal; it almost looked new.

You shell out $880 but you still receive mass-produced jeans. For half of that price, you could get custom-made jeans that fit you perfectly. And woden box and leather patch.

Bought a pair of Oni 20 oz jeans (made in Japan) 6 years ago for $300. Had them repaired a year ago. Still wearing them 4 or 5 times a week. Worth every penny.
1 pair of Levis Hunters Moon 505s have been with me for 7 years now. Only pair of jeans I own. I'm poor and wear them every day that I'm not wearing shorts (15 days out of the year lol). I've worked in Mills, quarries, all kinds of trades and manufacturing. They have been the only style of jeans I have bought for 10 years, $59.95 pretax. I have neurological differences let's say and they are my Emotional Support clothes. Oversharing but I had to get it out of my head. Thanks for your comment.

I work in a recycling center, and the most durable jeans are the Walmart jeans that cost slightly more than that, made in Mexico. I've tried a lot of brands, and sadly, US made jeans are not durable. I have not tried the $900 jeans.
N&f has no business charging $880 for anything. I know the fabric is rare, and I like n&f, but their build quality is just not there. Honestly it's a shame theyre even wasting this denim with their sub par production standards.
I'm curious who else used this denim though. I'm *hoping* n&f gave these ones special attention.

I’ve been wearing the dark rinse Rustler jeans from Walmart and they are nice. $13 and if you wash them inside out the color last for a long time but we all know you never wash your jeans. Spray linen sanitizer on them and you are good.
Hanging them in the 'Japanese sun' is what sold me on them. Worth every penny of the $880 for that high-quality limited-production hand-dyed iron-buttoned skillfully-artistic pair of jeans!
I like Levi Strauss jeans.I have tried different brands over the years,but I definitely prefer levis.The designer brands that have come and gone like guess,hugo boss,etc were more less just trends and they were not as good.The thing that I love about Levi's is that they seem to actually get better with age.

Them $20 black levi jeans from Walmart last 6 months if you wear them everyday. If you buy like 5 at a time they’ll last you a few years … mines haven’t faded ever and are pretty sturdy yet flexible

I think George might be George Davies. He was behind the creation of Next in the UK, which at the time was quite influential. I can remember reading Tadashi Yanai (founder of Uniqlo) was influenced by seeing how Next shops were layed out back when he was studying in the UK in the 1980s. Davies went on to start George at ASDA in the 90s, which was the clothing range of the UK supermarket ASDA. In 2000 Walmart bought ASDA and even though Walmart no longer owns ASDA, they must have kept the George name. I actually saw this pair of jeans a few months ago in a branch of ASDA for £8, which is insanity. So perhaps they still share certain ranges or have a lot of back stock.

Back in the 80s in Austin people would set up 'food truck' type trailers from which they'd buy up old pairs of jeans. They would then sell them in Japan.

I used to buy cheap jeans from stores like Target, Modells, and others and I learned my lesson after having so many pairs of them tear. Now, I only buy Wrangler. They have been the best pair of jeans I have every owned. Very durable. I don’t know how everyone else feels about them but I love them.

47 WMZ is about the toughest jean they make. Rustler is about the best bang for the buck. I always found it a bit strange that Wrangler uses heavier denim in Rustlers than 5 Stars. I guess 5 Stars are just for guys that want a W on them although I do have a few in Khaki, Desert Tan and Black that I use as an option with a polo or jacket when the occasion calls for it but don't trust them for hard work.
Wrangler is definitely my favorite. They also make the Rustler brand, which you can get at Walmart for $15. Simple elegance. They're durable, they're comfortable, they're practical, they're economical, and they fit -- and they're better quality than Wrangler 5-star. For a heavier material and (imo) nicer look, Wrangler Cowboy Cut in rigid denim (936DEN slim fit and 13MWZ original fit) can be found online for $25. I just can't see spending $70 or $80 on Levi's, let alone $880 on some other brand I never even heard of.
@@boblotoldo3051fr got tired of slim fit jeans shrinking into skinny fit jeans so I got the cowboy cuts. Also like them with my boots.
I still have Levi's from more then 20 years yes it faded out in some areas and as some wear on the legs but still can be worn today

I get my jeans at Costco for $12 on sale. Fit great. Perfect weight denim. Slightly stretchy. Dark color. Urban Star name. Of course you won’t get the coveted fades with them though.

Youre paying for mostly niche features and a feeling of exclusivity. Which in terms of materials/Labor is NOT worth $290+ no matter what people try to tell you. They both have basically the same lifespan and don't last 30x longer either.

Mind you....I wear these raw denims too lol. But back in the day, spending $200+ was the only way you really could get raw denim. These days, if Uniqlo did button fly , if be wearing them. But nope, I'm still forced to spend hundreds on jeans just to get a button fly and selvage line even though I know at the end of the day they're just jeans that last just as long as $10 jeans
@@unplugged2432 I recently purchased a pair of Unbranded 22oz Big Slub Selvedge for 125€ (~139$). Their 21oz Indigo Rigid Selvedge jeans I bought last year were 105€ (116$) in sale. Pretty good value for the money imho. In the end it's a little bit of an enthusiast thing... U want it to be special, so u pay special. No big deal...
The complete cost of that.... no.
However, for 150 or so.... those jeans absolutely last longer, are made of better materials, and are more ethical 🤷♂️
As someone who worked at a thrift store for 5-6 years in college and went through millions of clothes..... and also my major is architecture (so I enjoyed plenty of fashion)

She just said the Wranglers are more durable and comfortable which means they were put through the same test of time by the owner 🤦. Mass produced doesn't always mean sweatshop, there are machines that can pump products with good quality at an affordable price

I get $20 Levi Signature jeans and the pairs I have now I've had for about 5 yrs. Still in good shape.
I did the whole Japanese denim thing back in the day but got tired of having them dried clean in order to keep them looking good. That's just my opinion
Point is: don't wash them. My jeans dealer is literally not washing his selvedge denims
@@hardcoreizer That's why I quit buying them. That's what everybody told me. Toss them in the freezer is what everybody told me. I switched to stretch denim. They're only good for a few months about 4 washes but I prefer comfort over good looking denim. So far I haven't found both in one platform That's washable and lasts a long time 😂

Ive had very very minimal,,, issues with them, Ive not washed them much, Ive dry cleaned them a few times, and washed them a few times... they look amazing, feel amazing, are very durable, ... not sure how anyone could have any issues. I bought most of them, 'used' (they were new basically ),... around $250-$350... as far as I can tell, a solid pair of Japanese denim only have upsides and zero downsides.
George and Levi's all the way!! There's no reason to wear jeans that cost over $100. Jeans are made for working. The Japanese take what we have in America and improve on them, but some things aren't meant to be improved on and made more expensive. Keep it simple.
Levis use chemicals to dye the jeans in Japan they use not only better cotton but indigo leaves to dye the jeans. But I get your point
False. Some of these jeans will truthfully last a lifetime. Especially brands like oni. "As tough as a demon", or oni. So they call it.

Levi's are way expensive were I live, so I usually go with Tiffosi.
