The ecosystem would collapse. Certain frog species primarily prey on mosquitoes, meaning after they disappear, all of those organisms would go extinct.
I was in the 2010 8.8 earthquake in Chile. I was 12, and it was the scariest moments of my life. It was about three minutes of constant, violent shaking, and I'm so grateful my country is prepared for these disasters. We lost our backyard concrete fence, shelves upon shelves of cd's broken beyond repair, a flatscreen tv and glasses but the house and my family were ok. Although whenever it shakes I always remember how much it shook that night (yes, at like 3 AM) and it scares the shit out of me to think it will be like that again.
I was in a 15th floor in downtown Valparaiso. A lot of things broken, but mostly the worst fear was the collapse of the building, while seeing all your family in the same fear, the car alarms, the explosion of several electric transformers and some fires. Then going to street level while the building shakes with additional quakes, while your pets are still in the apartment because you can't find them (one of the worst regrets I have). It was true a long night.
Eduardo Escarez oh my god that must've been horrible. Now that I think about it, every time I go to an apartment building I always wonder "what would happen if there was an earthquake?". I'm glad you're okay, and your pets too. Whenever there's an earthquake the first thing I grab is my dog 😅
Wait! Aren’t they studying that cockroaches can sense when an earthquake is coming? I’m not %100 sure about it, but that’s pretty awesome We have found what cockroaches are for XD
Okay, there are a lot of problems with this video. 1) The 1960 Valvida earthquake was a 9.6 magnitude earthquake, not a 9.5 (this may not seem like a big difference, but the scaling of earthquakes is weird, so that the difference between a 2 and a 3 is 30 times greater than the difference between a 1 and a 2. As such, a 9.6 is a massive difference between a 9.5). 2) earthquakes aren't only caused by plates sliding past each other. They are more commonly caused by divergent and convergent plate boundaries, where two plates separate or collide. 3) The Richter scale is still very commonly used, and a different scale, called the Modified Mercalli Scale, is more used than both. 4) Earthquakes can't strike any area at any time. They can only strike along or near plate boundaries. This also makes them fairly easily predictable, especially when used in conjunction with seismographs. 5) there are some other slightly dodgy facts in this video that, while true, aren't always the case.
I think this video is just made much more simpler for younger audiences. I mean, not all of us know that much about it earthquakes. He might have just simplyfied it to 9.5 because, well, easier to understand. I have no idea to counter your second point, I think he just wanted people to know that it's caused by movement of the tectonic plates. To your third, I have no comment on that, I have no idea how people calculate the magnitude of earthquakes and the your fourth, I entirely agree. And to your last point, who really knows what happens before, during or after making the video. The whole video is simply oversimplificated. Let's just say it's for the younger audience, okay?
I remember a couple years ago, a little after seven in the morning, I was eating breakfast and playing computer games when it felt like someone was shaking my seat. Turns out an earthquake happening elsewhere in America could be slightly felt where I live. I've never been in an earthquake, but I got a slight idea as to what they're like.
There's no llamas on Valdivia tho (Only in the north of Chile, Valdivia was the city where the earthquake happened)... Tho there's a lot of Sea lions, as Valdivia is a city close to a river (Valdivia/Calle-Calle/Cau-Cau rivers)
I learn so much watching these videos but if I go to school I get bored and all I learned in one life noggin video in school I learned it in about one week or two weeks. I have fun watching these videos.
Hey! I'm from Chile and my parents were survivors from the 1960 Chilean Earthquake. In fact, in 2016 there was an aftershock from that Earthquake in the area. Nice video!

In Puerto Rico we have been 5 days receiving earthquakes and even though its been happening for a lot of time, they just never get old, its still so scary and they have caused iconic places to fall
Im from the philippines and had experienced 7.2 m earthquake strong enough to destroy our previous house. Lucky enough we all survived. Trust me, during an earthquake you cant even think of covering your head or staying safe. Everything happens in seconds and it's either death or another life.
Living in Mexico City, which suffered one of its biggest most devastating earthquakes last year, I would also account for the psychological damage made in an individual who was close or directly in a building that collapsed or someone who lost a loved one during the earthquake. I can confidently say this the most horrible and devastating part of natural disasters. These "secondary" effects last for an entire lifetime, things are just not the same after experiencing a strong earthquake. The state of alert that you get into when you hear the seismic alarm (or any similar sound) is palpable in society as a whole, it's not the best feeling. The fear for your loved ones, the paranoia when they don't answer the phone or you just can't get in touch with them. It is horrible.
Just one side note: it's not architects that "design" the buildings to withstand an earthquake. It's Civil Engineers who project that based on regulation, safety parameters and technical knowledge.
I know this isn’t relevant to the video but I was wondering why do I get multiple answers for what amplitude is when I search it online, is it A) The distance between tip (maximum displacement) and rest point B) The maximum displacement and minimum displacement (or just twice of what the answer is for A)) I’m pretty sure it’s A) but there’s a lot of stuff on the internet rn saying otherwise?
Probably not... The most ever was 9.7 or 9.5 I forgot... That was no were near splitting the earth Anyway unless it is somehow like 20 or something then no, but that is impossible (well it only goes up to 10 lol)
You should do a video on that thing that when you listen to something that's looped or repeated, after a while of listening it starts sounding different
You forgot to touch on an earthquake emergency readiness system that has been slowly, but surely implemented worldwide. California, USA, has ShakeAlert, but I'm not sure if it's been fully implemented yet. Japan has the Earthquake Early Warning System, or EEW for short. It's an alert system that gives people 5-60 seconds from detection of P-waves, to prepare for the powerful S-waves. While not ideal at all, it's certainly better than having no alert whatsoever. It's huge debut was during the Great Tohoku Earthquake of 2011. One of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded, at a magnitude of 9.0. Despite the many lives lost during the disaster, many more were saved due to the operation of an extensive early warning system implemented by the Japanese government. Those living in some of the prefectures received at *least* 20 seconds of warning before the powerful S-waves reached their location. Others were less lucky, but just having that bit of time to shut off gas lines or evacuate patients, and even get under the table can save many lives. It's an engineering marvel. I'm quite sure Chile and Mexico have similar alert systems as well.
When I moved to Japan, I downloaded an earthquake early warning app for my phone. After using it for awhile, I quickly changed the settings to only notify me of level 3 and above, because it was going off ALL THE DAMNED TIME!
Eurgh. The MMS isn't between one and ten. It's logarithmic in the amount of energy released for sure, so a quake with a magnitude larger than 10 is incredibly unlikely, but the scale itself absolutely doesn't cap out at ten.
7 years ago, the earthquake I had to evacuate when I was little in Tokyo Japan was an 8.9, during that time I had to leave Tokyo and move to here in Nevada because there was a Tsunami Coming. Me, my mom,my dad, my 2 grandmothers & my 2 grandfathers survived, but sadly my girl Hanachan was killed & drowned by the tsunami. She was 16 years old that time.
I remember me sat in geography learning about this and me not having a clue what the hell they was talking about and you just told me pretty much everything i needed to know just shows. ( love your vids )
