Worth noting that Ukraine is fighting a defensive battle with a great amount of financial and indirect military support from much of the developed world, which is vastly different than the defensive capabilities of Poland and the surrounding nations at the start of WWII
Russia is still incredibly bad at war. The generals are corrupt and there is no sense of nationalism there! Everyone is looking out for themselves.

Also important to mention that Ukraine and Russia have been at war since 2014, just not to this extent of destruction. So the Ukrainians were mentally prepared for the possibility of a war and also considering how absolutely ginormous the country is, with how many people its no wonder that the poorly coordinated Russians have barely made a dent. Guerilla tactics are very useful especially so when every squadron of bloody 4 people has an anti tank US, German, UK, Polish or wherever else's armament
Also, let's not forget, that Poland was attacked by Soviet Union on 17th of September, so there was literally no way in or out of Poland, beside small border with Romania, so the opportunity for support was very limited. And the support from the allies also lacked. West of Germany wasn't manned that well and Britain and France could've opened the second front right away and probably gain advantage.
Also one thing that wasn't mentioned in the video - French plan for defence was to just fortify the living hell out of their birder with Germany. It was unbreakable. So Germans did what they did in the first war and attacked through Belgium, routing almost all of French army, that was concentrated on the border and quickly running for Paris.
So the additional reason why Nazi Germany was able to make such fast progress, was lousy response from the west allies. I mean, the war was inevitable, when Germany annexed parts of Czechoslovakia in 1938 and then just invaded it.

Just a quick remark: In your animation at 7:15 you show Austria and Germany as one, while talking about the power seizing of Hitler in 1933. However, Austria did not become a part of Germany until 1938.

Irrelevant when it comes to reasons why Germany overwhelmed other countries so quickly.
Fun fact: dive bombers did not target the strongest defensive points, they attacked the weakest.
Although common depicted by media as softening the enemy forces, they usually targeted fixed positions and did very little when the combat was raging on.
It s changed during 1943 and 44, when the luftwaffe was almost depleted.
Hmmm, there is a book describing how a single German Stuka dive bomber pilot destroyed 500 USSR tanks. Were they all weak and standing still?
@@BasementEngineer tanks of the time were slow and had no anti air craft gun. Armor was generally weak too. Plus you have a Stuka that’s moving at 200mph. Besides large bombers were primarily used to take out more fortified targets considering they would just fly high let it rain hell fire.
It's common knowledge that long-range fighters, with drop tanks, escorting heavy bombers helped out. Aircraft such as the P51 Mustang, the P38 Lightning and the P47 Thunderbolt certainly helped to change the course of the war, both, in the air and on the ground. Of course, the deciding factor was that Germany was running low on aviation fuel, aircraft and capable pilots.
Luftwaffe was almost depleted 43-45, which is just wrong. even with the Luftwaffe'sever growing lack of quality pilots and a desperate shortage of fuel the Allied still weren't able to obtain Air superiority over the whole of Europe until January 1945. Saying that Luftwaffe was a depleted force 43-45 is a dishonor to the 10s of thousands of Allied Aircrew who were killed over Europe between 1943-45. Also, there is no fun fact about WW2 when 40-50 Million people died.

The Germans, both world wars, were able to mobilize troops in a way nobody would've predicted. They're a very efficient group of people.

To a certain extent, Europe didn’t want another war after 1918. Too much reliance on the League of Nations and a general pacifism gave Hitler a lot of room to operate. There are myriad factors that led toward the war, and he was smart enough to take advantage of every one.

When you describe Germany in 1930, the map shows that Austria was supposedly already part of Germany, although they were only incorporated into the Reich eight years later via the Anschluss. The Sudetenland also seems to have been wrongly incorporated into your version of the ("Weimar-") German-Republic. In contrast, East Prussia is not shown in dark red on your graphic for whatever reason, although this was part of the Weilmar Republic in contrast to the other areas mentioned.
The information you give is generally correct and the graphic optics are very pretty, but the geographical borders and classification in the timeline are far from reality.

Your point reminds me of something which puzzles me a bit. Reparations were demanded from Germany but what about Austria-Hungary, as far as I know their allies and who declared war before Germany did? Was it because the Austria-Hungary empire was dismembered by then?

Each of the defeated powers was required to make payments in either cash or kind. Because of the financial situation in Austria, Hungary, and Turkey after the war, few to no reparations were paid and the requirements for reparations were cancelled."
This still leaves open the question as to why reparations continued to be required from Germany given their "financial situation" seems to have been pretty bad too. Any ideas? "

Oh, one more thing to add. I asked my father in the early '70s about WW2 since he had been a soldier (but it ended before he was deployed anywhere). He had the oddest answer. He said, "Because they didn't fight WW1 the right way and had to fight it all over again". I was only a 10th grader and had no idea what questions to ask next, like what do you mean. Wish he was alive to ask now, but he'd be over 100.

I'd guess that he meant that the allies accepted a conditional surrender from Germany, which later allowed them to rearm and start WW2. In WW1 the war never got to Germany soil, in WW2 the allies didn't stop until they reached Berlin

Awesome video as always! Here's a story you might find interesting. A British ace in WW2 flew without legs! Yes you read that right. He lost his legs in a plane crash before the war, but still wanted to fly with the RAF and he was amazing. He shot down many German planes until he was shot down himself above Europe and captured by the Germans. He then tried to escape the hospital and the pow camp he was in multiple times until he finally got rescued from his prison. After the war, he made great efforts for people with disabilities and was even knighted for hos work for people with disabilities. This amazing story is the true story of Douglas Bader. And I think Arran would be able to make an amazing video about him!

That first map was a bit painful. Not because of the army's destruction, but how inaccurate it is:
1. East Prussia isn't colored in, and because of that, the Polish Corridor is also missing at 1:14.
2. Germany didn't invade Yugoslavia and Greece until 1941. And when they helped Italy with Greece, Italy took most of it and it wasn't until 1943 when they took the Italian occupation zone.
3. Germany only occupied northern and the western coast of France until 1944, the rest of it until then was the collaborationist Vichy France
4. Germany occupied Denmark in 1940
5. The Nazis didn't occupy Finland. You might be confusing it with the German Empire who tried to create a pro-German Finnish monarchy but that attempt failed. Though the Germans helped Finns against the Soviets in the Continuation War, the Soviets won and ordered the Finns to kick the Germans off their soil to then German-occupied Norway.
6. Slovak Republic was a client state rather than German-occupied
7. Germans didn't invade Italy until 1943, and it was the only the northern half
8. Kingdom of Hungary was an ally
9. Tsardom of Bulgaria was also an ally
On top of that, Austria and the Sudetenland didn't become a part of Germany until 1938. And the Autobahn existed before Hitler, he just expanded it.

I guess the intention of the 1:20 map was to show the max extent of Axis-dominated territory in the War. But yeah, we can agree that the mapping is poorly represented. For instance, the map of Germany shown is the territory change after the annexation of Austria in 1938.

thats how kids want their info nowadays. a 10-20min poor summary with some flashy pictures emotes etc. and some marvel reference so in other words more like a short movie for the feeling rather than education

I have probably one of the most unique family tree to exist.. As my family has people on both sides of WW1 and WW2... Japanese, German, American, and Britain ( Irish specifically )
.. That and my family basically hit other members of their family with nuclear bombs.. Once again.. Very unique and strange family tree. ( Yes, some of my family tree was wiped out by other members of the family tree who dropped the two nuclear bombs on Japan.. Thankfully for me not all of my section of the family tree was in those areas of Japan lol. )
I knew about almost all you mentioned here with the exception of the USA giving money to try and help Germany pre-ww2. Its interesting to think that, the USA very much both directly and indirectly influenced things both for the German side, and the Japanese side of WW2... Without really realizing how much they really would end up influencing it.

Blitzkrig was about committing the max amount of your forces to every battle, and not holding back to keep some in case you lost the battle. And this strategy in most cases statistically make sure you loose the least amount of personell and equipment compared to if you where holding back and committing a smaller force. And that is probably also why Russia is loosing so much now, because they where holding back and initially just committing a small force to a "special operation" in stead of just mobilize right away and send all of their force for a blitzkrig style attack.
True, they cannot manage every frontline with ~200k soldiers and that's why they retreated from Kharkov region (and are still being pushed back lmao) and why Russia did those referendums and started mobilizing. They thought Ukraine would just sign peace once they reached Kiev and they'd get along in the end. What a foolish mistake. Imagine talking how the Ukrainian government is employing Nazis while at the same time you still wanna make deals with them. Or how they treated real Nazis as casual POWs and even exchanged some of them, now those Nazis exaggerate their experience in the prison or start posting war crimes again.
If the Russian government really wants to treat enemy POWs who support far right ideologies better than it treats its soldiers, it shall not dare to expect a win unless it becomes more ruthless.
TL;DR Russia was foolish and lame and it takes too long to adapt its strategy accordingly.
The problem with blitzkrieg as a strategy is that you are essentially betting on everything going mostly according to plan, because you have no reserves to deal with the unexpected. So statistically it will work great most of the time, but when it fails it'll fail spectacularly. Germany actually got invaded by France during the attack on Poland in 1939 and was saved only by the French command losing their nerve and deciding to retreat without a fight.

Russia did nothing wrong to us, and we treat them like rubbish just for justly responding to Ukrainian anti-Russian Nazification and peace treaty-violating militarization (Minsk Agreement).

Don't forget that unlike European countries at the start of WW2 that were not prepared for invasion, Ukraine was. That war has started not on 24.02.2022, it started in February of 2014 right after Maidan revolution success. And after that it was certain that we had to prepare for war and we did. And russians just did not expect us to be so well prepared.

11:00 Fun fact, Czechoslovakia was essentially invaded by the Nazies before Poland after the Munich Betrayal where our "Sudety" border area was essentially sold to them by the Allies without our consent. Later on the rest of the country was invaded completely, with Slovakian part of the country becoming a Nazi sat state cause their government was fairly ultra-right leaning.

Well it's pretty simple, I am a long time subscriber and what I noticed is that his videos are hit and miss, he sometimes make a video that it would make you say: wow this dude deserve 20 mil, or 10 mil. And other times you wonder, did I subscribed to some 100k random channel that post facts from random newsletters?
I don't say negative things because I realize that "interesting topics" are not infinite for the finite knowledge of audience, you can talk about math or whatever and interesting stuff but if the audience can't really understand it then it won't make views. So what I noticed is that he need money to pay his team for helping with animation and research. And From time to time a banger video comes out. if he somewhat managed to only keep posting 'banger' videos, his views would've remain in the 'millions' per video which youtube would've promoted him more and get 10 mil quicker, but bcs he sometimes post irrelevant topics that are mostly clickbaity, it get 'less views'. That makes his average performance poor and youtube recommends less.

At the start of the war the French actually had the best tanks. They just assumed they were support so they didn't build a bunch. French also lost so many in WWI so they didn't have a fully equipped military.

Great video, but the incorrect maps throughout it make me very angry ;(
- Austria wasn't incooperated into the German Reich until March of 1938
- Same thing for the so called 'Sudetenland' which was added into the Reich in October of 1938
- And you completely forgot East Prussia which was a part of the Weimar Republic and later Nazi Germany, but was seperated from it because of the Danzig area which was given to Poland after World War One. The retaking of this strategic position in order to connect East Prussia back to the rest of Germany also was a major motivator for Hitler to declare war on Poland in September 1939.

The point of the video was explaining how Hitler managed to gain so much power in a short span of time. It was never about how the war played out after he started it~ The relevant part of this video ended at 11:00, anything after that is just a loose tidbit of what came after~

Which is why we should avoid wars at all cost. People talk about wanting to go to war, but as a veteran, TRUST ME, war is not something one wishes for. Enjoy life & make everyday count. 👍

Life is not so dear, peace is not so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery. There are things of great value which must be defended when threatened, or they will surely be lost.

That's all I'm saying. But when someone says last resort, then that means there will be no recourse but war. A head of state should not just float that idea so loosely. They didnt, germany was building up its economy and steelworks, indirectly preparing for WW2 during wilhelms rule and immediately after 1919, germany most certainly did not become a powerhouse overnight, also, remember germany has far greater struggles it was enduring than building up its military, like the econmic crisis of 1923 and 1929.

Don’t forget that the strongest ally of Germany prior to the beginning of WWII was Russia and Russia really paved the way for Germany’s success in Poland and Eastern Europe. Had Germany not attacked Russia and thereby making an enemy of their strongest ally the war could have turned out very differently.
No, not really. The USSR had already thought of the possibility of Hitler invading and planned to heavily militarised in case of a German invasion. Henceforth *if* Hitler had not invaded so early the soviets would’ve been ready and since he expected to win before winter(which as you know didn’t go as planned) he decided to invade early

I had kind of expected you'd also highlight how the annexations of Austria and part of Czechoslovakia really helped in adding war materials and industries to the Germany army, helping to vastly accelerate the buildup beyond what would otherwise be possible. Also by taking their financial resources, the Nazi could delay just another year or two that their economy would implode from their unsustainable spending.
Thus basically the looting had already started beforehand due to that, and was part of what led to the even larger army to deal with. It also led to an army that had gotten some practice in coordinating moving in to another country and annexing it. Get a live practice twice obviously will help a bit.
In that light, as is typically thought these days, the surrendering of those countries was a vast mistake. Something which probably in part has led to Europe being less willing to let Russia annex Ukraine if they can do something about it. Which creates an interesting modern historical connection to this all.
In my possession I am fortunate enough to have a two volume history of WWl written in the 1920’s which is BEFORE the start of WWll. Of course, the book is not titled “WWl”, as the second war had not broke out yet. It was called “The Great War”. The book covers the political and cultural of attitudes for over twenty years leading up to the beginning of that war. It continues to the very end and including the Versailles treaty and everyone involved in great detail. Most of the people, including the judges and accused have been long forgotten and their names would not be recognized today, except for very serious historians. I am fortunate to have that book and see the perspective which is not clouded by the events of the Second World War.

The German who had claimed the tactic Hans Guderian, got his tactics from Percy Hobart. It's documented that he had every page that General Percy Hobart published translated to German.

Nazi Germany looked like a grizzly demon wolf/dragon in the middle of Europe. Quite intimidating.
Little mistake: France alone had a stronger army by soldiers also then germany in 1939. (France 5.000.000; Germany 4.522.000 (1939) - to find on de.statista) Germany had not the strongest army but the most explosive force for the first days/weeks of the war and also the surprise effect, with (like you mentioned) the Blitz Krieg tactics. Thats the reason why they got few kilometers before Moskau in 1941 ,and occupied the BeNeLux Countries and France inside 2-3 months in 1939. They had problems with supplies (shown at the war against the Soviets) but at the first few weeks they were pretty strong because of the Luftwaffe and the Panzerdivisions.
Important: Germany was at war against a few countries at the beginning of the war, not 50. Countries like: France, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Poland and a few more. But NOT against the Soviet Union and the USA. The US didnt want to go to war, shown on surveys in the US at that time (because of WW1). After Pearl Habor they joined. So at the beginning, Germanys standing in the war was not quite as bad as it seems in 1939. But when the US joined and Germany attacked the Soviets, Germany lost controll over the battle in 1941.
Germany had pervitin plan and simple.

The original stated purpose of tanks in WW I was infantry support. They were never envisioned as fighting other tanks. Indeed, when the British first introduced tanks in WW I, Germany had no tanks at all.
Actually the Germans weren't that far off in terms of AFVs in WWI. The A7V came out shortly after the first couple of models of British Tanks

Yeah. That's a massive point he missed out. The ideals, motivation and ideology of an army plays a massive part in its outcome. Its the main reason Ukraine is holding its own. Another thing is that when they had to reduce the size of their army, they pretty much exclusively kept their officers and most experienced NCOs, really transforming those 100,000 they were allowed to keep into the most disciplined and competent military leaders in the world. Once they stopped playing ball with the rest of the world, adding the common soldiers took much less time.

Blitzkrieg. A tatic no one could fight effectively for the first couple of years, with a well trained, well equipped, army with high discipline and morale, with air superiority and well seasoned generals.
You aren't going to win against that when you aren't ready

Combined Arms tactics were happened upon by all powers more or less simultaneously by the end of World War I. If you look at the Battle of Meggido in 1918 you see the British employing tactics that are in principle blitzkrieg, the only difference being the level of mechanization though Germany still did a lot of WWII on horseback*. In fact combined arms tactics were the de facto standard for Britain and (in theory) France by the end of the war. DeGaull focused heavily on concentration into armor and mobile infantry because he knew his country could not and would not support the massive conscription army of the past. He also (not that it wasn't obvious) correctly identified that the case yellow of penetrating through the Ardennes and invading Belgum would be the most obvious places to concentrate this force for defensive purposes.
Unfortunately France was a political mess of WWI, despite the reputation they got after WWII the reality is France stood and died in the trenches in WWI and they still hadn't recovered from the level of generational loss it entailed. This political mess included meddling in what should have been purely military affairs and DeGaull wasn't popular with the political leaders because of his ideas of modernizing the army and making it smaller (but better trained professionals), as well as investing more heavily in aircraft and anti-air defense, mostly because the former was seen as a massive break from "tradition" and what had served France so well for centuries. So they didn't listen to him and as a result when Case Yellow occurred the concentrated combined arms army DeGaull had built was not concentrated but was being used to reinforce the Maginot Line as opposed to covering the major hole it DIDN'T cover.
France collapsed not because of a deficiency with their military acumen but because of political interference and a lack of will to fight on behalf of the political leaders. There is a REASON why Charles DeGaull was the leader of the French Government in Exile.
*On horses- They were so important to the Nazi War Machine that in the book D-Day through German Eyes Eckhart quotes a German Soldier as saying "One thing that astonished us is all along the beach there was not one horse!... This huge army had brought with it not one single horse or pack mule, all of their transport was mechanized, and I knew we had lost the war."

I think there's something about the whole Russia/Ukraine thing that we're not getting. For some reason I don't think Russia has gone "all out" a single time since it began. You can talk about how much help they're getting, how high the morale of the defending troops are and how low the morale of the attacker's, but that's not going to make up for the massive gap between the two.
I think it is simple. If Russia went all out, other nations would not take it lightly even if they wished to. So, going all-in for Russia would mean being prepared for Military repercussions across the globe.

Russia is fighting a proxy war with NATO that would have sooner or later "come to bring PEACE" just without the russians on the face of the earth, so if a fight is hard to avoid - you strike first. It's stupid to say Russia didn't want to solve this peacefully - applied to NATO membership, had the Minsk agreements in place, waited for 8 years for France and Germany to convince the clown to ent the so called "Anti Terrorist Operation" in Donbass.
