I like that you point out older actors history that we might not notice. Just an old guy. But he was Dracula back in the day (which I will now watch) and father to David Carradine. Did not know that. Enjoy these as much for reaction as to the research and knowledge.
Oh Ian, I remember that movie too An Astronaut in "King Arthur's Court" I haven't seen it in years. In truth if Rick Baker hadn't taken his talent to do the "Howling" John Landis would still be waiting to do "American Werewolf in London" so Landis should consider it a blessing in disguise while still thinking Baker betrayed him. Baker should've said "Hey man I was kept waiting until you were able to do your dream project did you expect me to wait forever? Dude, you should be thanking me for getting things underway."
“Cat People” is a really messed up movie but it’s a unique twist on the “cursed transformation” theme. Sadly, we have yet to see a werewolf vs cat person movie - but we did technically got a vs battle in the new remake of “The Wolfman” which is actually very good indeed and one of my go-to horror movies. BTW, I’d love to see you guys review “The Company of Wolves”.
@@Grandmastergav86 its not about it being famous, its about a film in the horror world that everyone likes and prob the best werewolf movie of all time. its my 2nd fav movie of all time, so i would love to see OTSR cover it, I like the fact they cover blockbusters and B movies....

Entertaining horror film, but the sequel Howling 2 is a guilty pleasure to me, Cristopher Lee embarrassing himself for a paycheck, and Sybil Danning getting em out for the lads...brilliant.
Fun Fact: in 1980 siskel & ebert did a special entitled "women in danger" about the "explosion" of low budget horror/slasher flicks that was taking over cinema at the time and how women were being "exploited"in the genre. They included clips of the howling in the special despite not having actually seen the movie.

The older gentleman browsing in Dick Miller's bookstore is Forrest J. Ackerman of Famous Monsters of Filmland fame. If you look closely, you can see that he's holding a FMOF magazine.
Fuck yeah, haven't seen this in ages but it's about that time again. Cheers to making Thursdays something to look forward to. Stay safe & happy, comrades 👍
I love waking up early on Thursday to see what you are reviewing! Great job boys! Tell Jess I said “hello!” and I can’t wait for you to do it again next week!!!
the company of wolves is one of my favorite from the 80s. based on little red ridinghood but darker and a great transformation scene even though the turn into accual wolves too.
Sure one of the most recognizable werewolf movies, the modern grounded take make it stand out, the ending when she transform is what i remember the most, those effects were well done
One of my favorite werewolf movies next to American Werewolf In London, and movies with Lon Chaney and Oliver Reed. I miss old fashioned horror movies as opposed to these new films like Insidious, the Conjuring, and Annabelle. 🙂🙂🙂.
Thank you so much for reviewing this movie! I first saw it when I was about 5 years old and I love this movie! I've been a horror fan for over 35years and this is one of my top 5 werewolf movies! Keep it up guys! I love it!
I akways liked this better then An American Werewolf in London because it was scarier. American Werewolf in London only had one scaty scene and that happened in the beginning of movie. The Howling had way more scares and was a more serious movie instead of a horror comedy like An American Werewolf in London.
I lived in the Chicagoland Area and we have Coyotes everywhere and the screams that come from bunnies when Coyotes get ahold of them sounds like humans getting murdered. Rabbits make no noise their entire lives but when a coyote attacks them they scream and sound human
If American Werewolf was the darling, The Howling was the bad boy...With Wind in the Willows claymation... Great memories of watching this on video in the 80s
John Sayles can write. This screenplay is sharp. And Rob Bottin’s werewolf effects were and still are grade A. And Dick Miller, Dee Wallace, and Slim Pickens. That’s alchemy. The only knock on this film IMHO is Dee Wallace’s Pomeranian wolf - pretty ridiculous. The movie is otherwise fantastic.
On the topic of silent films being destroyed by fire: the celluloid they were printed on in the late 1800s and early 1900s was literally made from dynamite and was _HIGHLY_ flammable. Most silent films have been lost due to fire. There's a fascinating documentary called Dawson City: Frozen Time that revisits a lot of old silent movies that were preserved because they were thrown into the river in the Yukon Territory (literally just thrown away in the river) during the gold rush era and subsequently frozen and preserved.
I'm 51 nowadays and love the book I still have it from the 80s and have read it twice so dar , and I also have and Read Gary Bradners other Book "Hellbund" which is kinda a fun book of Evil type fun.
Credit should also be given to ace film editor Mark Goldblatt. The cutters often get overlooked in making horror films work, and I noticed the puppetry and other efx in this movie are aided a lot by the top notch editing.
I never remember being as scared as I was when I saw the main transformation scene in this flick as a kid in the 80s. I religiously watched this along with AWIL growing up, and technically that transformation is better, but Howling’s is infinitely more terrifying. Dudes, I’ve watched you guys’ channel for a long time now, and I just wanted to say how kick ass y’all are at discussing movies. I appreciate what y’all do. Y’all are nothing short of genuine as fuck.
Howling was a great film - glad to see you both liked it ... there is a great book on the series by Bryn Curt James Hammond - The Complete History of The Howling - well worth reading ...
Just a little side note on a joke that needs context..... The mid 70's saw a gas crisis which phased out large cars in favor of compact, Japanese, imports.... Hence the Gas Station Joke......
Just to clear up some confusion, the beginning of the movie takes place in Los Angeles, not New York. One way you know this is that Dick Miller's character says that the Manson people used to shoplift from his store. The Manson murders took place in California.
Entertaining and informative , as always! However, please cover An American Werewolf in London. You could wear your Slaughtered Lamb t. shirt (I must get one myself).
Hey guys, watching you is like having a cup of cocoa but I don't drink cocoa but I watch you guys. Maybe I should watch and have a cup of cocoa on a full moon and see what happens. I like the ending with Dee Wallace wolfing out, it's weirdly touching, good to know that your werewolf form looks like yourself to a degree.
The Howling is one of my favorite Werewolf films of all time! Next to American Werewolf In London, and of course, the original 1941 film! Why? Well, aside from them being GREAT films! It's also because of the AWESOME practical effects of the transformations! Also, a great shout out to the Werewolf transformation scene from the 1985 Fright Night film, when Evil Ed transformed into a Werewolf too! That was great! If Hollywood ever does another Werewolf movie in the future, you know the transformation scene is going to be shitty CGI bullshit. With that being said, they're NOT going to top the practical effects from the classics! Great review you guys! Definitely one of my favorite reviewers from you!
All right , classic cult werewolf horror. One of the better movies of that sub-genre. Enjoyable with one of the Godmothers of horror...all hail Dee Wallace. Great transcending FX . Solid cast. 1981 brings back the memories! The other Howling sequels...not so good.
Watched for the first time a few months back and idk I was underwhelmed to say the least. Perhaps it was just that I've always heard such great things that my expectations were too high.
@@Grandmastergav86 yeah I mean I've seen some fun ones but this was just not up to par IMO.
