Same! Funny story: The big, old box TV my family had back when this show first aired in my country was stuck on a weird audio option that removed certain bits of audio from whatever was on screen (to this day I still have no idea why that was even a thing), so I went through the ENTIRETY of my first FLCL experience never knowing that the kickass rock music in the background and credits actually had lyrics (which meant my mind was absolutely BLOWN when I got my hands on the official soundtrack CD a year later lol).
FLCL was the thing that got me into the whole Gainax aesthetic and the wonderful web of all the anime projects carrying it. Many people say how they watched FLCL when they were 13, forgot about it, and then felt nostalgia watching it years later, but i never forgot about it. 5 years since watching it for the first time i hold it close to my heart, and it has shaped what things i enjoy and want to make. Guess I'll just leave this fact here.
I remember watching this at 9 and never forgot it. The animation the allegories to puberty and the designs. I just never learned the name when I watched it so I spent decades doing questionable google searches trying to find
Same. It's been my #1 since the day I first saw it. Watched it in a single sitting, and was hit with the worst case of "post-show emptiness" that I'll likely ever have.
Same! I had seen the cover and heard a thing or two about it, but one night I got reccomended an AMV of it on youtube, and I watched the whole thing that night from 1am to 3am and it was incredible. I have never stopped loving it since then and I will ABSOLUTELY never forget it
Except it's made for absolutely remarkable people who STILL feel like losers and uncool. The fandom's approach to feign empathy is just parasocial. I'll tell you what is actually for losers supporting each other, Di Gi Charat. And maybe Saishuu Heiki Kanojo, over Kare Kano where a dude casually becomes Japan high school level Kendo champion OFFSCREEN IN THE BACKGROUND. Western people seem to only have eyes for the celebrities. They live by proxy of them, and are blind to the Japanese community or call it unfeeling, because people are allowed to feel for themselves, privately. Not parade as "losers" but only compared to world-class tops of their industry in animation like Imaishi, ffs.
I’ll spare everyone the 200 word essay, and just say… I’m very fortunate to have watched this show when I did. And revisiting it being older and realizing even more things. It really is the perfect anime for me and I’m just realizing I’ve rocked this Canti pfp for years lol
I got into FLCL at the age of 17 (a year ago essentially) and since then I can say that it has changed my life, and I know that sounds a bit corny saying that an anime changed your life but it’s the truth. Now I can certainly say there’s really a world out there.
I left my crappy home town, explored all over the country I live in, and went broke and ended up even more trapped in my hometown again. It was then that I ironically decided to watch FLCL at the perfect time. I walked in blind but saw the stellar animation clips and knew I had to feast my eyes. Boy oh boy did I underestimate the underbelly of this story's whacky plot. I will always swear by this show!
@Armored_Ariete I guess a better understanding of what exactly I want out of life, and more emphasis on wanting to see more of the world and do things I wouldn’t think I would after being stuck in a small town for so long and not taking any chances at the same time.
I had a really similar FLCL experience. I saw the first episode at midnight when I was 13, thought it was weird, but maybe enchanting, yet didn't seek it out again until I was an adult. But for some reason, that memory of seeing that first episode, the late night quiet, the whistle of the iron on a TV set turned low, whispering about it with my friends at school the following Monday because there was a (gasp) hickey scene, sick with me so vividly, and I think that's kind of the beauty of FLCL. Even if you only see one episode, it sticks on your craw and makes itself known.
I don't know if it stuck with me exactly I guess I recall seeing it loosely, sometimes I wonder if I even did or was it another show it was such a long time ago
The show got me into the Pillows, and they are a great band. I love that you feel that the Pillows are more like the Breeders than the Pixies, I have always thought that too (the Pixies are my favorite band of all time tho). This show first aired in the US as I was a teenager in highschool and I resonated so deeply with it. Great video dude.
I love FLCL. It is a totally bizzare anime with an amazing soundtrack. Good to see you produce an awesome video about it Stevem. I'm always stoked to see one of your videos pop up in my RUclips notifications. Excellent work as always. 😎👍
I first found flcl on adult swim in like 2004. I was 11. We were on vacation to Myrtle Beach and my parents let me stay up late. That very night I heard Naota's dad moaning as the egg hanged from the wall. I was never the same.
Gainex was my life growing up, and flcl is one of the few anime i give close to ten to bc the animation levels were beyond anything at the time. So glad to have experienced it at the time.
Incredible video, was waiting for you to touch on this 6 episodes masterpiece ! I love learning the staff connexions with other media ! Also jumped on the video notification as soon as i got it !
After watching this, I watched episode 1 again. And already nostalgia hits like a brick. Surely my own past (watching it as a young teen in the early 00s) does its part, but I think the soundtrack plays a huge role. The Pillows are awesome!
FLCL is a great anime and was fortunate enough to see it basically the same age as you were but on adult swim. It came full circle for me when I got to see The Pillows on my 20th birthday back on 2018 for touring the new series. The new seasons have a soft spot on my heart thanks to them coming to the USA, otherwise I’m sure that tour wouldn’t happen. Thanks for doing this project man, definitely brings back a lot of memories. Nice gitaroo man referenced too, hella obscure there.
I really love your channel because it perfectly mirrors the way I get lost in thought/research about my favorite musicians. People like you are why I make my music in the way that I do so I thank you. This is what art is all about imo: the proof we existed.
My complete DVD set of FLCL remains one of my most prized pieces of media from my youth. IMO the closest I’ve seen something approach the perfectly offbeat absurdity of FLCL since FLCL was maybe Tatami Galaxy.
randomly picked this show up after being intensely frustrated with Evangelion, and it was an insane contrast. Loved every second of this bizarre fever-dream of a series
4:447:12 ah,, Daicon IV girl! Speaking of which, have you heard of an animated short called *Cassette Girl (2018)?* Someone timed the ELO song to the animation and it fits perfectly! Just look for "Cassette Girl - Japan Animator Expo" and "Cassette Girl ELO Twilight"
Maybe it’s just me…but now that I’m a grown adult and I tried going back to FLCL it just didn’t resonate anymore. I still listen to the OST to this day. It made me cringe reliving the false notion that a manic pixie dream girl will be what a young lost soul needs to find who they are.
what you get out of it probably depends on the person, but watching it for the first time in my 20s it felt more like the point was precisely that the dream girl isnt what you need... its deliberately fun and all the characters are cool and appealing but at the end of the day haruko is lowkey predatory to naota and that much feels deliberately choreographed
In the manga it's clear Haruko ruined Naotas life. You might also want to read Okazaki's River's Edge if you want some cynicism about romance. Both endings hit me hard.
It's a story about losers by losers, like I said you can save the world but your just a kid in a adult world, you were never gonna to be with either of these women, I guess at the very least naota sees that at the end
I completely get what you mean by this sentiment. The "Scott Pilgrim effect" is what I like to call it with series like this.. Urusei Yatsura, and Tenchi Muyo also falling into that category for me. In FLCL I feel its more prominent that this trope is being used for Takkuns sexual awakening and leaving his boyish ways behind. But at the same time we see in the adults around him that they are very immature and childish. Watching the series over, that's the part I resonate with the most now. Takkuns frustration with the adults in his life as he starts to realize they have faults, shortcomings, and sometimes don't make the best decisions. This idea of what's an adult crumbling right before him at a time when he most needs a model to follow. I can look back on the series knowing that's where I was at his age. Now as a 30 year old, I realize "Adult" is what you make of it and were mostly pretending as our thick eyebrows tend to fall off from time to time :)
Never actually heard the dub, the original is so ingrained in my brain I know I will think it sucks even if it's actually good lol. But I saw Edgerunners in English, so maybe?
@Stevem It's one of the first to use honorifics (kun, chan) and treat its audience like they are not to dumb to understand cultural differences. Pluse they put alot into actually understanding the characters and the scope of the project that was very rare for that time
I respect FLCL for some of its central messages about taking chances to try something new and opening up about one's true self as well as its unique animation and fantastic soundtrack. It's not one of my favorites, but it's still great and should be watched by any anime fan at least once.
Excellent, sir … Love(d) this show from the second I saw it- in my late 20s, 2000. 😊 a time capsule is a perfect allegory in more ways than you may mean.

Ow, and did Miyazaki rip off the spinning kiss scene and used it at the end of Ponyo?

flcl has been my favorite show since childhood and i don't think i'm ever going to find anything that tops. it's a shame that we now have 4 newer seasons that were just not it. like some aspects of the new flcl were good but a lot of it makes you go "why did they make this?"
I love me some Fooly Cooly but can we really talk about some karekano( His and Her Circumatances) please?! A series so greatly overlooked which had such a crazy production history; I think it deserves some love!❤❤❤
You did it! You made a FLCL video! rad! after your hideaki series I really wanted to hear what details you'd have on this one, my favorite. I feel like most FLCL content is pretty dumb!
its so funny with ur last episode I was thinking I wish stevem would cover flcl and you did! I was concerned though because what else can be said about flcl but I love your videos because you go into the production more than other people do and show that while this was mostly tsurumakis vision, lots of other people were involved also! I know you briefly mentioned it at the end but I really wonder if tsurumaki would have made a sequel to flcl if khara got the rights to it I am also sad that tsurumaki has been tied to eva for so long and I hope with his new project khara he will be able to express himself and create something new anyway love your videos! keep on keepin on
The vision of flcl is more so blurred creative chaos which is great, reading FLCLicknoise has gives a lot of good insight into the mixing pot it was with enokido & the gainax gang & how they would add bits to every little thing. He might have done it, but he may have more taken a mentor position to give it to Kharas younger staff instead, just off the Japan Animator Expo
I obviously like the OVA but it dropped in my estimation on rewatch as it feels like someone had 13 ep scripts and then filtered them through half the runtime. EP 3 especially. Abenobashi (starts fun and freefalls halfway through) and FLCL should have swapped episode counts.
Abenobashi is a tv show so there wasnt anyway flcl as an ova would get 12 eps, the cramming in thing to the directors recollection is just the style in which him and enokido approached the project from
As a loser, I 100% agree with this! (I know everyone's gonna bash at me for this, but I actually like the sequels, except for Grunge.) My favorite sequel is Shoegaze!
I´m just flushed by the vividness of the animation. Nowadays it needs an OPM or CSM or the solo leveling to get anywhere close to these kinds of action scenes. It´s perspectives, movement, style..You don´t wanna tell me that a scene like the one at 7:30 running over the giant gun would still be animated anything like that. We probably would get a close up of the face, maybe some perfectly blue canvas sky with some white action line to feint movement, constant cuts and everything looking too clean to feel right. Of course this one got the same still frames and clunky scenes and the old time style of reusing one frame with some repeated movement to point out special scenes. But even today this one would stand out, the animation has style and direction that isn´t instantly forgettable.
This is an OVA not a tv animation so already the set up & time between them is very different. The boards too are coming from some pretty killer talent, from masayuki, tsurumaki, imaishi & even yo yoshinari. Not even mentioning how stacked the animators are which we do in the video. FLCL was pretty of its own when it came out also. Although trigger is still pulling out whacky and interesting comps, even in their newest show Dungeon Meshi
Maybe because I didn't watch FLCL when I was younger, like so many people did, but I personally didn't enjoy watching it. The humor, the sporadic animation, idk nothing about FLCL (for lack of better words) impressed me. I understand its messages and took a while to understand its story, but being honest, I was not entertained watching a single second of the show, especially on my second time rewatching it. Also I know people are gonna get mad, but I watched FLCL in Sub not Dub 😅 I like Kari Wahlgren as Haruko but that's the only voice I liked in the dub.

I read the title and I comfortably said “yeah, it really was perfect for me”
I took that thumbnail as a compliment.
The ending song for FLCL lives rent free in my head.
it's very catchy

The Pillows are amazing, but I never knew how well the Gitaroo Man OST would fit with FLCL's visuals!
It matches well
I was in my mid twenties when FLCL came out on adult swim and changed my world. The Pillows loving the Breeders makes a lot of sense in retrospect.
FLCL is such a vibe i need to rewatch it!

FLCL is such a parody and inversion of 2000s anime, it just works. Whenever I remember it my brain automatically jumps to Space Dandy.
FLCL is one of the best anime and is the 1# dub of all time ...better than ghost stories
i'm gonna be honest I cant stand that dub at all
No way! While the FLCL dub is decent it doesn't compare to Cowboy Bebop.
Never actually heard the dub, the original is so ingrained in my brain I know I will think it sucks even if it's actually good lol. But I saw Edgerunners in English, so maybe?

@Gunsight-One well I can't argue with that
I rewatched this anime a few months ago, introducing it to friends, so it's still fresh in my mind. Thanks for teaching me more about it!
Glad I could help!
FLCL is a piece of art that will stick with me forever.

its so funny with ur last episode I was thinking I wish stevem would cover flcl and you did!
I was concerned though because what else can be said about flcl but I love your videos because you go into the production more than other people do and show that while this was mostly tsurumakis vision, lots of other people were involved
also! I know you briefly mentioned it at the end but I really wonder if tsurumaki would have made a sequel to flcl if khara got the rights to it
I am also sad that tsurumaki has been tied to eva for so long and I hope with his new project khara he will be able to express himself and create something new
anyway love your videos! keep on keepin on
The vision of flcl is more so blurred creative chaos which is great, reading FLCLicknoise has gives a lot of good insight into the mixing pot it was with enokido & the gainax gang & how they would add bits to every little thing.
He might have done it, but he may have more taken a mentor position to give it to Kharas younger staff instead, just off the Japan Animator Expo
Thanks for reminding me that I need to play through Gitaroo Man again.
You should!
credibility is one of a hell to enjoy a video
I wanted to subscribe to you but found I had subbed already🤣🤣
i was watching normally but when you mentioned that you were from the UK, i immediately recognized your accent
It's pretty obvious I thought
@@Stevem I KNOWW but idk it just suddenly appeared lol
I obviously like the OVA but it dropped in my estimation on rewatch as it feels like someone had 13 ep scripts and then filtered them through half the runtime. EP 3 especially. Abenobashi (starts fun and freefalls halfway through) and FLCL should have swapped episode counts.
Abenobashi is a tv show so there wasnt anyway flcl as an ova would get 12 eps, the cramming in thing to the directors recollection is just the style in which him and enokido approached the project from
Oh boy! STEVEM is made a new gainax video!
We're back
Thanks for this one Stevem !
No worries!
As someone who watch ghost in the shell stand alone complex I had no idea what happened in FLCL.
No wonder I love it so much
As a loser, I 100% agree with this!
(I know everyone's gonna bash at me for this, but I actually like the sequels, except for Grunge.) My favorite sequel is Shoegaze!
Baccano had arguably the best English dub up there with Cowboy Bebop.
That last flcl season was actually pretty good
which one
The original run of FLCL is some of the best anime on the planet and I don't give a shit what anyone says about that.
FLCL remains one of my favourite anime.. that is the original
I tried the two sequels and they didnt resonate like the first one did
There are four sequels now. FLCL Gurenge and FLCL Shoegaze released last year.
Good review, great anime
I remember so many anime kids back in the day basing their entire personalities on the wrong things that they got from this anime.
Thanks!
No problem!
I suppose the closest we have gotten to a spiritual successor to FLCL in terms of direction would be Space Dandy.
space dandy is cool
Has it been confirmed that the next khara project is gonna be a Tsurumaki one? Great video btw, as usual
last i heard anno said in one of his interviews & supposedly in the production book tsurumaki mentions it also
I´m just flushed by the vividness of the animation.
Watched FLCL on shrooms my first time. 10/10 would recommend.
lol sounds interesting
@Stevem oh it was a blast of both introspection and laughing till my stomach hurt
After reading Scott Pilgrim, that's exactly the impression I got. This was made for 20 yo losers like me who love alternative rock and anime.
It's a shame FLCL never had any follow up seasons or spin offs and never will. But it's perfect as it is with just 6 episodes. Yep.
What are you talking about lil bro
The new versions look garbage
Actually there's three spin offs.
True!
fireeee videoo
thank yoU!
FLCL is one of the best things ever made
Maybe because I didn't watch FLCL when I was younger, like so many people did, but I personally didn't enjoy watching it. The humor, the sporadic animation, idk nothing about FLCL (for lack of better words) impressed me. I understand its messages and took a while to understand its story, but being honest, I was not entertained watching a single second of the show, especially on my second time rewatching it. Also I know people are gonna get mad, but I watched FLCL in Sub not Dub 😅 I like Kari Wahlgren as Haruko but that's the only voice I liked in the dub.
sub is better, but i wouldnt say its for everyone i think its fair not to like it
We don't talk about the sequels in this house
Animation that is second only to the Gurren Lagann films.
Never knows best
we fucking love flcl
If FLCL is for losers, then I'll gladly take the moniker in stride.
Ice gitaroo man music !! Cool video
fits the vibe
My fav anime
nice vid man. What was that song in the outro? It sounds awesome and was wondering if I could add it to my playlist
all the music in the source doc
loved the video
thank yoU"!
