I remember my great great grandfather who lived to the age of 109 telling me the story of the great Christmas truce. He was there on the German side, he was a machine gunner. He never forgot that day, he always told us that story on Christmas day, with a big smile on his face but also tears in his eyes when he got to the part of next year that I did not happen again, in a way in a story was a lesson behind every rifle is a person. Their people too, they have emotions ,feelings, empathy. Well there's a lot of bad in war, there's some good, whether we choose to see it or do it. I miss you so much grandpa Hubert. May you please rest in peace with your fellow brothers up in the gates of St Peter.

I’m fascinated by the Christmas truce. As both an Advanced English and Modern History student I am in sheer awe at the powerful nature of the human experiences of community, war and peace, morality. Amongst the cold regimented setting of war, soldiers go against general orders and celebrate what it is to be a human instead of a soldier. The history side is equally enthralling. There is a high level of respect for each culture and men were buried with honour. I am even intrigued at the mention of football games because I have heard time and time again from teachers that many sources are limited in reliability, that they are a niche event along the western front with many unable to be corroborated according to my teachers. It would be an honour to explore your methodology and “sources for your sources”
In 1999, 85 years after the Christmas truce, a wooden commemorative cross was erected near Ypres. On November 11, 2008, on the 90th anniversary of the end of World War I, a monument dedicated to the participants of the events of December 1914 was unveiled in Freilighien.

This is so accurate lmao, my eyes teared up in the first few minutes of the vid. The Christmas Truce is arguably one of the most touching stories of both World Wars
Such a beautiful story that will continue to astound generations to come. In the end, regardless of the label we are given, by ourselves or others, we are all human. We each have desires and consciences, and will act upon them, even when told not to. Thank you for bringing the full story into light.

I love the stories I hear about the Christmas truce. Such a fascinating thing to happen in war time. (didn't know about Hitler making that call tho!) It's a shame both sides didn't just stop the shooting right there. I read in a textbook somewhere after both sides returned to the trenches no one fired a shot the next day, and to this day no one knows who was the one to fire that first shot to reinitiate the fighting. Makes you wonder, why can't wars just be friendly games of soccer or paintball? Great video yarnhub! A wonderful early Christmas gift to see you guys comeback!
This is by far my favorite war story in modern history, thank you so much for covering this! I would love to see some more World War I stories from you guys in the new year! Merry Christmas 🎄
This was so cute, yet sad at the same time. I can't imagine becoming friends with a person whom you thought was evil, but then realize that they were just like you. And the fact that you knew you would have to fight them again the very next day, the men of that generation were made of very strong stuff.
Yarnhub you have done it again. Excellent job The Men who were there that Christmas Day are smiling from the Heavens above. You guys do such an excellent job at illustrating some Sabaton’s songs Merry Christmas 🖖
Back in 1986 I was a 16 inch gunnersmate on the battleship Missouri. In Sept 1986 we deployed on a 'round the world' cruise. During that cruise one day the captain decided to have a fan tail fiesta/steel beach picnic. We had the grill going with burgers, dogs, sodas, ships band playing. Along with the crew sun bathing and throwing footballs and playing catch with baseballs. My chief ( E7) came along and told us to stay close to our turret, the aft turret. Shortly afterward a Soviet destroyer came up from behind us fast but stayed about 200 yards back. The Soviet ship was all battened down for a fight and not a single soul was walking the decks. We kept on like nothing was going on, no Soviet ships around. We talked about how the Soviets were seeing what we were doing and maybe how they thought they joined the wrong navy. Just our food on the grill was better than what they were provided. I have always thought it would have been interesting if my ship and the Soviet ship, under the radar invited a few Soviets to come over for a burger. Rotate but they stay aft of turret 3. We could trade hats, lighters, patches and such. To this very day I would love to meet a crew member of that Soviet destroyer and have a sit down talk over beer. What did they think about running into an American battleship? What did they think when that battleship was the Missouri? Would they have liked the chance to go aboard as mentioned above? Would they have liked to trade?
Must have loved the smell! Back in the 90s my family were visiting friends in the USA when I was a kid and we went to an airshow in either Oregon or Washington (not sure). Dad was ex RAAF and his friend was USAF who had been on exchange with Dads squadron back in the 80s. Anyway it was the first time the Russian Air Force jet team had visited the USA so Dad and his mate find themselves at the bar drinking with them. Dad was talking to one of the Russians and told them he and the USAF guy were both ex RAAF Roulettes (Aussie display team). Anyway he asked if he could swap something for his wings off the guy but he said in broken English that if he bought the team a round of beers they'd give him something. So he did and a Russian tore his wings patch off his own flight suit and gave it to him. He's still got it at home. The Blue Angels were there to but apparently far more stand offish to Dad (civilian guest in the bar),the USAF guys and Russians. Completely unrelated but I read recently about the Iowa turrent explosion. Horrid affair but so cool you got to serve on those mighty ships. Check out the thread on ARRSE thread called "Pull Up A Bollard", he talks about visiting Vladivostok in the 2000s in an RN Type 42.
I've heard this story so many times and every time its still just as unbelievable as the very first time I heard it. WW1 is very sad so much Needless death on both sides from a pointless war and shocking tactics designed to get men killed. Rest In Peace to all those brave men who died fighting on all sides your sacrifices will not be forgotten.
I'm sure there's going to be an Easter egg where a random soldier's just flipping breakdancing or doing something weird in the background Edit: also happy anniversary my Romanians friends!
This story is a true example of humanity's ability for good. A short peace in a terrible war, but what a peace it was! I love this story, ever since I first heard Sabaton sing about it. Merry Christmas to you Yarnhub and a happy new year!

Christmas came early eh? Thanks so much guys, it's awesome. I'd especially like to point out that you faded the music to silence when talking about how silent it was... like damn. It really takes a lot for me to tear up, and this achieved it. It's a nice relief from probably the worst week of my academic career... I've been working over 12 hours a day for over a week now, but this... is beautiful.
Man this was so wholesome and saddening. It really is wholesome and nice to see people who are enemies play games and sing together. Its saddening because they had to kill each other. That 3 shots and salute just sunk in my heart i cried. Rest In Peace to all WW1 soldiers and unlimited thank you to all veterans of WW1. You guys fought for a better future.
I've know about the Christmas truce for a long time. But the way you told it actually made me tear up a little. Amazing job, this is the best retelling of it I've ever seen.
This demonstrate how war is all about... The leaders who hate each other live peacefully back at home while the innocent soldiers who doesn't hate each other fight to death somewhere around the corner. This is pure discrimination..
Okay, I absolutely love Sabaton's new album; it's one of my absolute favorites. I always knew the song to be emotional, but this video makes everything heartbreaking.
A short respite on Christmas is something that was well needed for those soldiers, to drink and be merry, to play games with one another, and to enjoy rations together.
Many great war stories were told on this channel. This one, is by far, the greatest. No bigger, more important event ever happened. Every victory, every show of bravery, heroism, everything else that happened during war, was lesser to this. I both love and hate this topic. Love, 'cause for the reasons I told earlier. Hate, 'cause I don't like getting my eyes wet. Merry Christmas everyone. Let it be happy and peaceful.
The Christmas truce is one of those remarkable events in WW1 history one can never forget. To see soldiers casting aside their weapons for the sake of fellowship and to enjoy the Christmas event really gives off a heartwarming feeling. It is just a shame to see the war just continuing after Christmas...

Jokes aside I'm glad Yarnhub made a video about this, I was tearing up as I watch.
Merry Christmas to everyone!❤
Lest we forget.
This is so accurate lmao, my eyes teared up in the first few minutes of the vid. The Christmas Truce is arguably one of the most touching stories of both World Wars
Men watch titanic for nudes lol
Such a beautiful story that will continue to astound generations to come. In the end, regardless of the label we are given, by ourselves or others, we are all human. We each have desires and consciences, and will act upon them, even when told not to.
Thank you for bringing the full story into light.
It’s been very hard the last couple months, and this really was a treat. One of my favorite war stories of all time.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”
-Jesus Christ
Matthew 5:43-44
Im sorry to hear that don, i'll pray for you
It was so wholesome and I was smiling and then… they had to fight again and it made me cry
Yarnhub, you’ve done it now. The most wholesome video next to the Franz and stigler incident.
WW1 was the gentleman's war. Prisoners were treated fairly, soldiers had respect for their adversaries. Truly a time of heroes.
Want some mustard gas with that CO2, sir?
@@yolkridermoldhider4849 No, but the Jews might.

Canadians would say otherwise
I love the stories I hear about the Christmas truce. Such a fascinating thing to happen in war time. (didn't know about Hitler making that call tho!) It's a shame both sides didn't just stop the shooting right there. I read in a textbook somewhere after both sides returned to the trenches no one fired a shot the next day, and to this day no one knows who was the one to fire that first shot to reinitiate the fighting.
Makes you wonder, why can't wars just be friendly games of soccer or paintball?
Great video yarnhub! A wonderful early Christmas gift to see you guys comeback!
Something tells me that the person who fired the first shot to reinitiate the war was Hitler…
Imagine this happenign during ww2, just german and soviets chilling.
@@MajorAce_usedtobeMechchad minus the whole ethnic cleansing. Idk if they would've done that that time lmao

It shows. We are we even angry over the smallest things. We can just be happy. And have fun
Probably the most beautiful story to Come out of war time in all of History.
o7 soldiers, rest in peace.

RIP to All Legends Who Passed Away In War And Respect To Those Who Fought In War
I get goosebumps everytime I watch a video or read an article about the Christmas truce. Thank you for this wonderful video Yarnhub!
This is by far my favorite war story in modern history, thank you so much for covering this! I would love to see some more World War I stories from you guys in the new year! Merry Christmas 🎄

I can only imagine the hearty laughter they all must have had at that beer joke!

Finally it’s been so long since you uploaded a video I’m so happy to see you back and I love this video!
This was the most heartwarming moment in the history.
Excellent job
The Men who were there that Christmas Day are smiling from the Heavens above.
You guys do such an excellent job at illustrating some Sabaton’s songs
Merry Christmas 🖖
Thank you guys, this video was really nice. Heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.

7:30 i know hitler used to join ww1 as a soldier but i didnt know he was in christmast truce ww1
Corporal Hitler was odd like that
Finally he's back after sabaton.

incredible video! so moving to hear about such humanity during the war. started to tear up when the Germans put up trees, that's just so pure.
THANK YOU SO MUCH SABATON!!!
I'm sure there's going to be an Easter egg where a random soldier's just flipping breakdancing or doing something weird in the background
Edit: also happy anniversary my Romanians friends!

i dont think theres an easter egg

This story is a true example of humanity's ability for good. A short peace in a terrible war, but what a peace it was!
I love this story, ever since I first heard Sabaton sing about it.
Merry Christmas to you Yarnhub and a happy new year!
The ending of this is going to make me cry isn't it?
I Cried So Much During This Video, This Is Absolutely Beautiful. Can't Belive This Is Real Sometimes.
We got Christmas Truce by Sabaton, one of their absolute best, and a Yarnhub vid about the same topic. Just fucking epic, and a super well made vid about one of the most interesting moments in history. And as always, you learn something new, every time you guys come with a vid.
i swear this is the best chrismas story ever...so nice so sad...so human---
about damn time we got this, a Perfect Event, to start the Perfect Month
'' as the morning draws. there's silence'' i can feel it
Christmas came early eh?
All Dolphy needed, was a hug from either a Tommy or a Poilus.
I've know about the Christmas truce for a long time. But the way you told it actually made me tear up a little. Amazing job, this is the best retelling of it I've ever seen.
You never fail to make a great video, we love you :)
This demonstrate how war is all about... The leaders who hate each other live peacefully back at home while the innocent soldiers who doesn't hate each other fight to death somewhere around the corner. This is pure discrimination..
I cried the first time I’d heard of the Christmas Truce
…. and still do.
Thank you. Merry Christmas everyone
Never forget ❤️🎄
This story always brings a tear to my eye. It's such a shame that the war went on for years.
That was so good, man ive been waiting for so long and it was great and so touching, Merry Christmas everybody!
Okay, I absolutely love Sabaton's new album; it's one of my absolute favorites. I always knew the song to be emotional, but this video makes everything heartbreaking.
This stream was the best ever
A short respite on Christmas is something that was well needed for those soldiers, to drink and be merry, to play games with one another, and to enjoy rations together.
this really is a "Humanity Hell Yeah" tale. Thanks for giving it such a splendid animation to go with the story!
Merry Christmas to my brothers of the world may peace one day fall upon us all, God bless
Let it be happy and peaceful.
another wonderful and sad war stories merry christmas yarnhub
They have done it again! They came back with an amazing video! And as alaways keep up with the good work and Merry Cristmas to yall!
The Christmas truce is one of those remarkable events in WW1 history one can never forget. To see soldiers casting aside their weapons for the sake of fellowship and to enjoy the Christmas event really gives off a heartwarming feeling. It is just a shame to see the war just continuing after Christmas...
