Yuzo Koshiro is a Japanese composer, arranger, and programmer whose contributions helped change video game music. Having discovered video games and their music at an early age, Koshiro learnt to program using an NEC PC-8801 before landing his first jobs in the industry in early 1980s Tokyo, scoring the background music for games like Bosconian, Tower of Druaga and Sega’s 1987 hit Shinobi.
Breaking away from the conventions of early BGM soundtracks, which favored pop, rock and jazz, Koshiro setup his own company, Ancient, and quickly established himself as a pioneer in the field thanks to his programming knowledge and early mastery of FM sound chips. He made his biggest impact with the soundtrack to Sega’s early ’90s beat’em up series Streets Of Rage, taking cues from dance music including techno, house and drum & bass and as a result influencing generations of fans and artists such as Just Blaze, Flying Lotus and Ikonika. In 2017, Koshiro and longtime colleague Motohiro Kawashima embarked on a two-year world tour as part of RBMA’s Diggin’ In The Carts series performing their Streets of Rage scores live for the first time.

I remember the first time I watched "Diggin in the carts" (end of 2014). After watching all the instalments I bought a flight ticket to Japan for February 2015. I wanted to visit "Yellow", the club where Yuzo Koshiro used to hang out when he composed the SOR soundtrack. So what I recall from this anecdote was that the original "Yellow" club closed some years ago, although it reopened under a different name. I headed to Roppongi hoping to get into the club somehow. I managed to find it but it was closed (I think it was temporary closed for reforms at that time). Anyway, funny story. A few years later, I think December 2017, I managed to see Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima at Fabric in London, so the circle was finally closed :)

One of the greatest Pioneers, trendsetters , visionaries of the 80's and 90's circa Japan, which amazingly enthusiastic passion for his career has elevated the music on the titles he helped developed to cult status gems, ... this is quite a fascinating interview to say the least 👍

Regardless , it's okay to acknowledge that he was influenced by BLACK house music. People forget that black people were the main ones doing house back in the day. He definitely is a elite talent but people need to also know how much black people influenced so many genres of music.
