I saw this interview for the first time. I realized that a kind of music of Hosono world is understood by foreigner, As a Japanese , l am so glad it. I wanna say , there are so many great music songs in Japan.
The interviewer is sluggish but it's partly because he is waiting for the translator. People are so mean in comments, I'm sure it was a huge thrill for the guy that he will cherish but people on the internet must always shit on others joy. I enjoyed this interview.
you know when you meet[watch] a unique creator when you cant stop looking info about all his /her influences-Such a pleasure, insightful and inspirational experience to listen to this man
I find it very interesting because he says he is a shy person so he doesn't even like to go public like this lecture. 細野さんは性格が地味なので こういうところに出てくるのは嫌いですと正直に告白しているところがおもしろい。
Thank you RBMA for conducting and posting this interview with such a musical pioneer. It's so rare to hear an in-depth interview with Hosono in english.
I loved hearing certain details in this interview (especially about Philharmony) but I really wanted to hear more about his music from the 80's. I was hoping they would touch on his albums Omni Sight Seeing or SFX. I wish they interviewed Hosono with someone more familiar with his music (or someone that was more interested), the fact they were able to get an interview with him was a golden opportunity to ask some interesting questions (especially considering he doesn't like doing interviews).
he literally replies with "no choice." at 20:48. this interview is kind of a bummer. watching one of my heroes look uncomfortable because of a bad interviewer really sucks. this wouldve been so much better if the interviewer also spoke japanese and the whole thing was subtitled. all that said, i love hearing haruomi hosono talk about his work.
Wish they delved more into Hosono and Takahashi's Yen Records history, but at least Philharmony was covered. Thank you RBMA for this invaluable translated document, and hope you're also able to interview Yuzuru Agi for his viewpoint of "technopop" of the 1980s.
“Mon Oncle!” A French friend of mine showed me that movie five years ago. It impressed me quite a bit for its political and social perspectives, but I had no idea the soundtrack inspired Hosono! Very cool. 😌
I find it interesting that he sees his musical present and near-future going along with his passion for 40's Boogie Woogie and acoustic music, and is not much interested anymore in electronics. You can sense here a really special musical mind in tune with himself and the obvious dead-ends of fads. And it seems electronic pop music (or at least a large portion of it) became a formulaic joke for someone like him, who was a true pioneer, and who could be enjoying a Ralf Hütter/Giorgio Moroder phony cash-making end of career on that sole basis. Long Live Hosono!
+1 especially for the moroder reference, i saw him live and it was the most boring shit ive ever seen in my life, people talk shit about dj's not doing anything but they are doing way more compared to moroder who didn't do anything except introduce a song and then clap his hands rhythmically. Not so much with hutter though i cant imagine why anyone would see kraftwerk live now, the live show hasn't changed a bit since 1995 and its still the same fucking songs over and over again. Then they toured with the "3D SURROUND SOUND" show which is exactly the same except you get to hear one or two new channels, other then that its the same thing. Same songs, same visuals, same everything, boring. Kraftwerk are obviously pioneers and are going down in history in a big way but they really need to just pack it in until they at least release a new album, which they wont be doing any time soon, and ill go as far as to say all of the original members of kraftwerk will be dead before any of us hear even one second of new material. Good news is that YMO are still doing stuff and are still as fresh and original as ever, even if they never release a new album if you see them live its going to be a different show every time.
I wish the interviewer had been a native japanese speaker, so it could have been a real conversation. Hosono did a great job Edit. Still, it was much, much, better than the Sakamoto/Alava Noto interview
It's frustrating when RBMA gets these young hipster people to interview musicians who were at their prime before the interviewer was even born. It is frustrating to us who remember when this music was new and we never saw interviews with these people. You think "finally I get so see an interview with Haruomi Hosono" then the interviewer who is in the 20's or 30's asks questions that are so pedestrian and general like there is no experience with this artists music at all. It's uncomfortable to watch. Please get an interviewer who actually grew up with this music. It would help. I was annoyed they didn't ask him anything about Human Audio Sponge and why YMO and HAS ran separately than together for so long. We didn't hear anything about his collaborations with Bill Laswell. Yes it is always nice to see the people RBMA picks to interview, but it's a shame they dont get interviewers who have knowledge of the musician or the genre. It's nearly disrespectful. (a good example of this is the RBMA interview of Cluster. The interviewer was terrible).
I would say the interviewers age is irrelevant here. He just happens to be a poor interviewer/journalist. To ask questions like "can you talk a little about X, Y and Z" is indicative of poor planning and understanding of the artist. They should either have gotten a proper journalist or simply had Hosono give a lecture or speech on his own music.
>Asks about Miharu Koshi, and artist who's sound was pretty much formed in Hosono's vision after 1981, and has had Hosono produce every one of her albums since their first collaboration on 1983's "Tutu" >Answers: "Haha you know about her? Check out her new album :(
Hosono is indeed a musical legend. It is a shame that the interviewer did not get a rapport going (although more difficult with a translator). Sitting right on the other side of the sofa and just asking vague open ended questions without any delving. A missed opportunity for the audience. (I wonder how were the audience understanding Hosono without any translation or was it edited?)
Can they fix the description? 5:05 - Happy End - Kaze Wo Atsumete and 21:06 - Harry Hosono & Tin Pan Alley - Peking Duck (live at Tung Fat, Yokohama Chinatown)
Wow, such a ruined opportunity ! :-D It looks like the interviewer is bored and doesn't really know anything about Hosono and his work, hence the generic and uninteresting questions... Even the music samples are bad choices, either awkward track selection or bad timing choice... :-/
I do not think the interviewer did a very good job, he seems to have lots of respect for Hosono and I'm sure the language barrier made it uncomfortable, but I think his withdrawn and monotone interviewing style made it more uncomfortable for both of them.
It's cool to see Harry talk, but the atmosphere of the entire room is so awkward. The interviewer and hipster audience could improve on their energy and confidence.
Useless interviewer, hurricane Dorothy (from Tropical Dandy) is not his first album and certainly not the first album to feature his singing ! Bloody interviewer even played Kaze wo atsumete in the beginning without knowing hosono San is the singer.... RBMA u need to find a more competent and genuine interviewer!!!
who tf is interviewing him this is making me cringe to the max. i love hosono and it mustve made him so uncomfortable. that shit would traumatize me for at least half a year
I saw this interview for the first time.
I realized that a kind of music of Hosono world is understood by foreigner,
As a Japanese , l am so glad it.
I wanna say , there are so many great music songs in Japan.
日本人キモいです
Hosono is an absolute legend and such a humble man. Glad someone mentioned Snakeman Show! Their stuff is brilliant.
Gosh his voice is as good as his music
The interviewer is sluggish but it's partly because he is waiting for the translator. People are so mean in comments, I'm sure it was a huge thrill for the guy that he will cherish but people on the internet must always shit on others joy. I enjoyed this interview.
He was great

For the Happy End song playing at 5:05, it's called "Kaze Wo Atsumete" (Carry The Wind).

Such a wonderful interview. Wish Redbull would've had this guy interview Mr. Sakamoto and Alva Noto
すばらしい講演でした。

The godfather.

True, there are so many gems in yen records.
I would have loved to hear about omni Sight Seeing but atleast they asked a bit about Philharmony
I love "Martin and Lewis" at my childhood. Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis TV program are still in my mind.
Living legend! and a hero!
“Mon Oncle!” A French friend of mine showed me that movie five years ago. It impressed me quite a bit for its political and social perspectives, but I had no idea the soundtrack inspired Hosono! Very cool. 😌
The sound of this movie is great!

Please make a lecture with Miyako Koda from Dip In The Pool, she's beyond marvellous
I wish the interviewer had been a native japanese speaker, so it could have been a real conversation. Hosono did a great job
Edit. Still, it was much, much, better than the Sakamoto/Alava Noto interview
Or me , I'm bilingual , big fan of Hosono ;-)
Really interesting show!
His interview is rare even in Japanese.
セットもいいかんじだし、すばらしいプログラムですね。
Hosono and YMO are true pioneers of EM. Could Redbull please make a version of this clip with the english translated voice on it?

When techno kids try to do interviews about music
Couldn't agree more.
with me?
1:14:45 interesting difference between Japanese music and Western music in terms of dimensions of sound
when they're listening to Hurricane Dorothy and it keeps cutting to the audience groovin' hahahahahah
This makes me so happy :)

5:05 kazewoatumete
thank you but that was excruciating
great interviewer
+Rachid Fakhre nah man he didn't understand who Hosono is and he talks so slow it makes you fall a sleep
why so serious, interviewer?
nervous
29:00 a clearly nervous giggle, or maybe a socially akward interviewer?
Does anyone know if an interview exists where Haruomi talks about his grandfather and the titanic?
Red Bull と細野さんに違和感
what he meant by "making a record working with layers"?

wtf is this being presented in English and they don't translate Haruomi to English?
There are subtitles for Haruomi-san, pls click the CC button!
