  • Seven years ago, Shane Harrison and Dillin Pakai were found guilty of murdering 25-year-old Sio Matalasi during a stoush between rival Mongrel Mob members in Wellington. Sio, who had a young son and a new baby on the way, was not a gang member. However, he was friends with several members of the Petone Mongrel Mob chapter who lived in a nearby flat.
He stepped in to try to help his mates and was shot at close range by 18-year-old Pakai. It was 43-year-old Harrison who had ordered Pakai to start shooting during the confrontation.
Matalasi has wanted to meet Harrison since the day he forgave him in court. After seven years, the meeting finally went ahead at Hawke’s Bay Regional Prison early last month.

I myself committed aggravated armed robbery, even though I was sentenced years ago and have been out living my life differently since then there's not a day that goes by that I don't think about the victims in the situation I was in and it tears me apart and once I had children of my own I hurt me even more to realize what I had done and how it's not about me when we all have a right to live in this world peacefully with each other and coexist and there was nothing important in this life that was worth taking somebody else's right to have a freedom or to live their life to the fullest with their loved ones in my opinion, It was very touching to hear this, grieving father forgive the other two boys and years later he's going into put this behind him by confronting the other man and it makes him a wonderful wonderful father grandfather and man, Amen..

Humble father, I take my hat off to you for staying humble and having the heart of forgiveness. I am Samoan and have 6 brothers and all family oriented and values. One of my brothers got killed by a Maori man who is rumoured to be a patch member and now my other brothers are filled with rage and want revenge. As their younger sister, It hurts deeply. But I want my brothers to be like this father 😢 as hard it’s said than done but forgiveness will set you free. God bless this father and family.

But forgiving someone would be a way of finding peace in your life because holding resentment for someone can be very draining and would hinder you from living your life to the fullest. Better to forgive the person for your own sanity

What an amazing man, it can't have been easy for him to forgive, but what a difference it has made to all of them, sadly nothing can bring this man's son back but how wonderful to have your heart sing than to become so bitter and twisted that your heart forever remains in pain, and what an amazing example to set your grandson's, God bless you xxx

My sister was murdered when I was 16 and she was 20. I am now 42. The thought of forgiving that man.. Never.
Never could I. Never will I. He stole an entire piece of my life. My only sibling. It broke my parents. He is free to live his life now that's more than he deserves, I am ok with the part of me that can not.

Yeah I understand incredibly hard isn't it?,in your own time I guess I could only imagine if it was my mother or father how I wud feel, but God does say to forgive becoz we are only holding ourselves hostage really letting It go and leaving it up to God is the only way, freeing ourselves up comes with forgiveness, bitterness and unforgivness has no place in heaven
