    The trim technique just works. One thing that really helped me was my instructor telling me to just look out and stop chasing the gages. Looking at your horizon and glancing in is much better. You'll be shocked at how much better you hold altitude by just looking outside.

    • @brandonman94
      @brandonman94 Год назад +5

      I want to echo this too. I had serious problems my first few instructions with even just holding steady level flight. Me and my CFI did a dedicated lesson where I just didn't look at the instruments once we were trimmed for altitude, doing shallow turns and steady flight, and I ended up holding altitude spot on once I started being earnest about solely looking for sight picture. Last lesson, we did steep turns and slow flight. My first several shots at each, the airplane maybe moved 20 feet vertically through the entire maneuver.
      Then of course I started overthinking and looking inside the aircraft too much, and screwed them up 😅 But, I reflected on it, and we're going to work on it next flight.
      If you're just now learning VFR, keep your eyes outside the cockpit! I picked up some nasty habits of instrument-gazing from playing flight sim for over a decade, starting in middle school. Save that for IFR!

    The best thing about steep turns is that they're fun.
    Steep turns were a turning point in my flight training. I felt one with the plane in a way I had never felt before. My instructor noticed and told me "whatever you had for breakfast today, eat more!"

    Take note: I followed this procedure while flying alone, like Jason and dialed trim in almost perfectly but be aware once you're doing steep turns with your 190 lb. DPE in the right seat everything changes and those trim settings probably won't apply. Practice with your flight instructor in right seat for more realistic checkride scenario.

    I have never used trim in steeps, preferring to have the feedback from the heavy nose tell me I'm not in a normal flight condition (which could inadvertently occur at some other time) and that recovery is needed. The FAA Handbook indicates that "The decision whether to use trim depends on the airplane characteristics, speed of the trim system, and preference of the instructor and learner".

    I'll try trim the next practice. My cfi taught me to add a small bit of power as I cross through the 30o point of the steep turn to compensate for the horizontal component of left. What happens if I add power, do I just add a little less nose up trim?

    • @glennwatson
      @glennwatson 2 года назад

      My instructor taught me that for steep turns the power is to reduce the need to hold a lot of back pressure. Sounds like the trim technique achieves a similar result.

    • @haugjeffry
      @haugjeffry 2 года назад

      @@glennwatson Yes, I agree. I'm just wondering if I should try the combo of both. In fact, my cfi and the cfi for my check ride will probable be concerned if I don't bump power as I pass through that 30o back point.

    Nice,, love your style and this video. i was actually wondering about , when i pull on the stick, RV9A, in a turn , and i feel that G force,, i like it but , when does it break? so i was thinking about Va and , ended up finding your video, which is great, and i find it helpful, and it is great for what you were talking about Steep Turns. I am asking some related questions,, so in theory if the RV9A has like a 3.8 + g design, then , if i pull back on the stick
    and i just discovered it has a G meter so if i look at the G meter and it is less than 2, i am thinking , doesn't this answer the question it is ok to do this and it will not break? and further, Va , which would have it stall before breaking,, let's guess the Va is 110knots, but that goes down with not full tanks and me alone so less than gross weight, and slowing too much risks an accelerated stall, , slow deep breaths do you see the convergence of questions? i am guess you do and you could do a video talking about this. I want to feel that pull when i bank over and pull the stick abruptly but , i also worry that abrupt stick pull is different than your sort of gradual roll into a 45 degree turn here,, ???

    Unfortunately, the trim trick is useless for Warriors in winter here in New England. Piper flyers, you understand. Looking forward to trying it in summer though.
