  • We are joined by Jakob Nowell, the creative force of Jakobs Castle also a drug addict in recovery! Jakob was born into SoCal Rock and Roll Royalty. His father Bradley Nowell was the lead singer, songwriter and guitar player in legendary So-Cal punk/reggae/alternative legendary band SUBLIME. Bradley tragically died at age 28 when Jakob was only a 1 year old. Now, Jakob is 28 and is the new lead singer and guitar player for SUBLIME.
Jakob tells his whole story of drug addiction and recovery and what it was like with the pain, pleasure and pressure of being a musician in Southern California and the intensity of stepping into the shoes of his dead in order to be a 'custodian of the legacy' of SUBLIME!

I think all Sublime fans need to see this interview with our nephew. We adore you Jakob. You don't have to try, you just have to be you and magic happens. I lost my dad when I was 14 and he was 43. I'm now 43. My dad loves and played music 🎸. Also, I think growing up that way/environment gives you that passion and pain needed for this kind of thing. Much love and success to you. Thanks for this interview brother!! ❤

As someone who saw sublime live in 1995 I'm beyond stoked to see Jakob fill in for his dad is just perfect. It's always been the music of choice for me while waxing my boards getting ready to surf, it's just the vibes that make me feel alive. I never realized how much this music affects me until I saw sublime at Coachella. Sublime is back. RIP Bradley but man your son is killing it👍. I think I can speak for other Sublime fans in saying this is huge!!

I have been sober for almost 4 years from a 12 year hell. I can relate to Jakob. My dad was also a musician and grew up with stories about him jamming with the velvet underground, having dinner with The Rolling Stones and made guitars for Keith Richard’s, ect. I was surrounded by the rock lifestyle even as a child playing Barbie’s in the room next door while my dad was playing music with drinking buddies and in the room next to me. I have major hearing loss lol. But overall, I had the muse bug and started playing music to express myself but I added drugs into the mix. The relationship was so good but so depressing at the same time. I haven’t picked up a guitar in 6 months. It makes me happy but since I related my drug use w/ playing music, having a hard time. Thank you Jakob, I think I will take my fake nails off and tune up.

Listened to this interview and coming back to watch the video after seeing Jakobs Castle the other night. Listening to him talk about trying or not trying to emulate his dad’s sound, his singing with Jakobs Castle blows me away because it sounds so much like Bradley even more than when he’s singing Sublime songs because he owns it. Also cool to see him sober up there because his vocals are soooooo perfect-the pitch and agility were just amazing. Excited to see what happens for Jakob personally and with his uncles in Sublime!

    Sublime is back baby!
    Just keep working 💪
I can't wait to hear some new Sublime. As greatful as you feel. We are all. ALL of American Culture. We are all greatful too. so you're Not the only Alien.
There are millions of us who recovered from a drug or pill that could have killed us too.
I'm free from the grip of death, but I Still drink and party.
It's like all the planets have aligned. We lost beautiful planets along the way.
But this is destiny bro. And you're shining so much light on us all.
Don't think of it as a duty that you feel like you have to do to complete a circle that wasn't finished by your father.
Most dads Don't want their kids to do the same things they did.
They want you to be better than they was, because YOU are better.
No matter what's going on. Throughout all of human history. All parents want to build a strong foundation for their children and family after their life, to succeed and life life better than they did.
And I believe humanity is still on the right track to build a strong future.
And you are an extremely strong block to let the world know, we are great, and we can be greater.
You're a ray of fucking sunshine man. You're Smart and Bright .
You acknowledge the Hand you were dealt.
You've fallen down like us all, but you're making the best of life with the cards you have left in this hand.
And I fucking love it ❤
    Don't follow your dad's footsteps.
Press your new ones in the sand of his last step.
And take us to a better new place brother 🌞
Life is a gift, like a cool new toy for Christmas.
Make the most of this gift. It doesn't last forever, but it last as long as we can make it.

That being said, i hope people don't start to ask more of him as if he owes others something. He seems fairly graounded, which is a great quality when it comes to being associated with such a great band.

It would be Monster gift to humanity.
Then the torch is in your hands to carry into the future and truely come back, bring back a piece to humanity that we lost and desperately need back.
Live it up like you're doing right now. Keep it going exactly like you're doing right now, today bro.
I don't really believe in destiny, but I believe in free will. And I know you are genuine. You're doing this because it feels right, and it's because it is right!

You can fill your life with experiences that feed your soul and give you joy! You don’t have to use drugs and alcohol to get that. You really don’t. PS! I had my last glass of alcohol just after new year’s eve 1991 myself and I don’t do drugs (incl MJ).

He doesn’t seem to feel connected to the music yet, but there’s no Sublime without a Nowell. That band and music is his and I would assume his dad would see this as the only legacy he was able to leave his only son. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders and getting this gift at almost thirty means he might avoid all the crazy crap rockstars do when they get big and knows not to screw up a good thing.
