Can’t believe it’s been years. 5.5 to be exact.
I got 2 of the regular sanders. One I keep with mesh sanding screens on it to quickly take down the first coat so it's pretty flat. The other one always has foam backed sand paper for final sanding. Touch up the corners with a sponge and all is well, well hopefully.
When there's a mirror in the background I realize your job is hard because you have to talk to no one, but as if you're talking to everyone

Belt sander will do the trick! Takes the mud right off! And the paper below. And the gypsum. But seriously those rectangle sanders definitely do make your arms tired, especially when doing ceilings. I have not seen that squarish sander before. I will have to look for one next time. For intermediate coats I use an orbital sander with an adapter I made for my shop vac. It's bulky to use but really cuts down on the dust.
I've had good luck with the Radius360 sanding tool. The disc shape makes it easier to avoid sanding lines into the dried mud.

LOVE my Radius360 sander! Any chance you’ve tried the Radius360 “Air” version? I haven’t tried it, but the prospect of less dust is very intriguing.

If you’ve got a tight angle you can’t get into (the kind you’d use a “clipped” knife in), you can make a clipped sander by cutting one of these pads diagonally and gluing it to a scrap piece of sheetrock.
Thank you for this. I was contemplating getting a pole sander but couldn't decide which one. I bought a handheld version at an estate sale. It works ok but not great. Think im gonna pull the trigger on this one. Thanks!
Exactly. I'll have to check it out. Anyone who has used a 9" sander should know it gets heavy very quickly.

I recently was using a round sanding disk off my Palm sander and that worked really well I'm just thinking about attaching it to A-pole I think it would work nicely kind of like that square one you're showing thanks for sharing bye for now look for a deer from you
When you introduced me to the Hot Mud it was a fabulous life saver. We have a monolithic dome and the interior surface is really really rough and I have been trying parging and was really unhappy with my ability with it. But when I used the Hot mud I loved how I could create a surface that I really liked.

I just use the dewalt drywall sander I know its heavy but its very fast and there is no dust when you connect a vacuum

what grit of sand paper do u use on ur first skim coat and second coat?
120 on the first coat. 150 or 180 on the final.

Hey Ben - thanks as always. what happened to the Planex? Would you do the power sander on final? I've been doing it mostly for the dust collection - that can't be beat - and it seems to work ok. What are your thoughts?
Yeah, I was wondering how that's going also. At last check he said it was a bit of a learning curve. But, I am looking for that dust collection incorporated into the sander also. Ive been using one hand on a block and one hand on a shop vac. Took me weeks to do 4 rooms -- ceilings only! Just waiting for his approval to pull the trigger and buy one.
It’s great but you can ruin your work very quickly. It’s also incredibly heavy and painful for me to operate on ceilings for prolonged periods. I also find I still need to go over the ceiling again with the black widow anyway because the planex is not perfect.
Hi Ben , I have a question - I have built a linen closet facing a knee wall so the ceiling inside the closet tapers downwards creating an acute angle
I’m at taping / mud stage now and I’m finding it difficult to get a knife up there to actually smooth it out well. What do you do in this situation? I’m tempted to just run a bead of caulk up there where it will be difficult to tape and more or less unseen.
Do whatever is easiest. Especially if no one will see it. You’ll forget about it too.
What about the Black Widow sanding pads?
Can you use a swiffer mop with sand paper attached for the first sand? Im a that depends on how well the paper is secured. I'm sure I'm not the 1st to ask, but just wanted others to know it's ok to ask when you know you were thinking it! Thats all
After sanding do you have to wipe the wall? Great video.
I know his advice is to clear the clumps from corners, but no need to dust. Paint absorbs it.

Wait, you sand in between coats? I'm curious if that adds any benefits to the finish coat, I have always taped all three coats or more depending on the level I'm trying to achieve then I would sand. Would love to hear your thoughts. Be well.
Sanding between coats is crucial for getting much flatter work. It makes the next coat go on sooooo much flatter and easier. It also helps it be more uniform in application thickness so you won’t sand back down into your first coat and get ridges.
I don’t think anyone should have to sand a first coat in my opinion, and the 360 radius is killer, curve the edges up, it’s not dummie proof but just don’t be a dummie lol! Love the content
How do you keep the pole from stopping on the wall? I feel like when I’m sanding my skim coat as I’m repairing my walls, I have to be at just the angle or the sanding head gets “stuck” - even without a new layer of sandpaper.
Think this better tool would help?
You might just have a bad or cheap sander that doesn’t move properly. They shouldn’t be too hard to use. We call it an idiot stick for a reason.
Don't press or push as hard. As you move the sanding head, the angle the pole makes with the wall/ceiling surface changes. This amounts to more of your pressing/pushing being up & down rather than back & forth. Less pressure during these places will allow the head to smoothly travel over the surface.
Am I crazy for thinking that fine scratches and imperfections are problems that can be solved with a high build primer much easier?
No, but it depends on what you call "fine". Although it's best to aim for finishing skim/sanding that stands on it's own. I think close detail inspection after priming is important.
Fine scratches are no problem for high build primer or even a decent coat of regular paint. Imperfections and grooves will not be filled with high build paint. That's why this sander is so good. It doesn't leave imperfections or grooves.
@@vancouvercarpenter Am I crazy... to sand after priming? Just light and fine with soft backing pad. Crazy/masochistic ...such a fine line.
Thanks for the info. Gotta ask: Is it slightly convex to help keep the paper’s edge from digging in? I tried another sander about the same size but round and I found it useless because it left so many gouges.
It’s totally flat but leaves zero gouges.

I like the video. Have you found that the Festool is too aggressive or logistically difficult to use for the final coat?
Too heavy and too many grooves. I will use it on regular drywall jobs but not full skim coats. I also will follow the festool with the black widow sander on my final coats to get rid of the grooves.

Yup. No fun. This one actually won’t leave them but like I said, it doesn’t sand quickly or make rough things flatter. Just a really good finish sander.
