    This is the 6th episode of the Korg SQ-1 Tutorial Series, in which I demo the four modes the SQ-1 (amzn.to/2hI7E38) has to read the information dialled in using the buttons that lie beneath the two rows of knobs. In this tutorial, the SQ-1 is controlling the Arturia MicroBrute (tinyurl.com/zaqpybc) using the CV/GATE A outputs, as the slide features do not transmit well over MIDI.

    Just finished watching the whole series, it's so informative. Originally I bought the sq1 just as a midi to cv converter to clock my DFAM to my DAW, didn't know it's actually quite powerful! Cheers

    Great video series. The Volca Keys, the SQ-1 and the Monologue are all Korg devices which I have learned far more about their capabilities from RUclips content creators like yourself than from Korg instruction manuals. The amount of info in the Volca and SQ instructions, while useful, is so minimal as compared to what I see people doing with it on RUclips as to be laughable. These little powerhouse units are so deep that the best way to explain all the functions is through a series like yours. Many thanks for these tutorials and I'll be recommending your series to those I know also have the SQ-1. Liked and Sub'd.

    Dude, excellent demo of this unit. There were a few things still bugging me about it even after reading the manual and watching a few other tutorials. This series filled in all the blanks. Well done and thanks.

      I'm still planning for two episodes on the Sync and MIDI features, but it might take me a few weeks in order to get most of that stuff right.
      Keep enjoying the SQ1. ;)

      Thank you for stopping by and commenting. I never managed to do the last video of this series, since the MIDI and sync implementation are not very easy to understand and are poorly documented, but maybe after enough experiments I'll share my findings in a forthcoming video.

      Hi Jan van der Brink!
      Thanks for stopping by and commenting. The next two episodes are about MIDI and Sync, and have been delayed a little bit because the information is a little bit sparse, so I need to run some experiments, which adds to the time. Any how, I hope this delay won't put you off from watching the rest of my work, nor hit your enthusiasm for this machine.
      Cheers!

    Good in-depth videos!
    You can use the CV Gate connections for note data and use the MIDI out from the SQ1 at the same time for MIDI clock - this will sync the LFO speed on the Microbrute to save having to touch tap. Just make sure the MIDI channels are different on both machines so that the microbrute doesn't respond to any MIDI note data from the SQ1.

    • @Philipplus
      @Philipplus  7 лет назад

      Hi Andy! That is a neat idea, but the intent on the video was more about having a pseudo-waveshaped LFO using the SQ-1, rather than a sync for the internal LFO of the MicroBrute. But a good idea nonetheless. :)
      Cheers!

    Excellent series! I just picked up the SQ-1 to use with my BeatStepPro to add more sequences to my synths. Need more sequencers!!!!! LOL :) Really like the trick of using the steps to create multiple, shorter sequences. Very clever!

    Hi Philip,
    Very good videos. Thank you for sharing.
    Do you have any idea how to Transpose sequenced midi notes of the SQ-1 on the Behringer 2600. It seems to be stuck @ C. I couldn't find a way to transpose the sequences of the SQ-1.
    It works on all other synths but apparently not on the Behringer 2600.

    Hello Philippe, thanks a lot for your videos, i learned a lot with the volca sample series! I have a question about the sq-1 step jump and active step modes. I have a setup consisting of a arturia keystep controlling vía midi a couple of synths and a volca drum and sample synced to it. If i use the sq-1 as the máster, will the step jump and active step affect all the devices at the same time? (That would be amazing for live performances and the main reason for me to use one). Thanks a lot and best regards!

    • @Philipplus
      @Philipplus  3 года назад +1

      Hi Khwain.
      Thanks for the nice feedback.
      The SQ-1 only syncs via MIDI clock or sync pulses, so the step jump and active step only affect whatever instruments are being sequenced by the SQ-1's sequencer. The sequencer on the Keystep is kept in sync, but won't be affected by neither step jump or active step.
      In order to do what you desire, both your master sequencer (SQ-1) and slave one(s) (keystep) would need to emit and respond to Midi Song Position messages. I really don't know any modern sequencer that still uses that protocol.
      I hope this helps.
      Cheers

      @@joaquingb You're welcome. As I was sending my first reply, I remembered that my RM1x has the option to use MSP so you might want to check early groove boxes like the RM1x, RS7000, Roland's MC series, and possibly the earlier electribes (the electribe 2 doen't have this protocol).
      Cheers!

    Hey, I have a question,
    I was wondering if you could change the sound coming from the SQ 1 via the microbrute. Not just the pitch, but the synth sound. Thanks!

    • @Philipplus
      @Philipplus  7 лет назад

      Hello Don.
      Yes, you can send the CV A or CV B to any of the CV inputs of the Microbrute and thus control other stuff like the filter cutoff, the pulsewidth of the suare wave, the sub, etc...
      I hope this helps.
      Have fun!

    Can I change the key to anything other than C? Its kinda frustrating.

    • @Philipplus
      @Philipplus  4 года назад

      Hi!
      Unfortunately, no.... this is a very, very basic sequencer. You can use it in 2 octaves chromatic mode, though. It will give you at leas one octave of every scale and key, but you'll need to dial the notes by ear, or use another quantizer down the line.
      I hope this helps.

    You didn't go into the global settings, like midi channels and step resolution :(

    • @Philipplus
      @Philipplus  5 лет назад +1

      Hello Vlad Quake
      I was intending to do so, but there seems to be a some issues regarding sync and step resolution, which I haven't fully understood... Like the series I did for the Volca Sample, I preffer delaying a video in order to put the best information available on it. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. But thanks you for the comment, it will keep me motivated to better understand this device. ;)
      Cheers!

    • @VladQuake

      I figured it out. It's on Korg's website for SQ, it's not the manual, it's called "SQ1_FAQ_Tips.pdf"
      first three are in sync using SYNC X2, quarter note, 8th note, 16th note, second three are same thing but using SYNC x1
      SYNC X2 = 1 sync clock advances 2 steps / SYNC x1 = 1 sync clock advances 1 step
      Make sure your volca is in same sync mode, you can change it globally. Also the fall/rise in global settings should correspond to the correct polarity, and if you want to stop/start just use midi

    Hi. Can you explain me someshing? Can it play chords if i connect it to polyphonic synth's? Also sorry for bad English.

    • @Philipplus
      @Philipplus  6 лет назад

      Hello Soul Shelter.
      That is a good question. Unfortunately the SQ-1 is a Monophonic Sequencer. You cannot sequence chord on it.
      I'm not sure if the Beatstep Pro has that feature on the lastest firmware. You can always use an electribe as a sequencer for that kind of jobs (it can sequence chords of up to 4 notes), or you can buy one of those old Yamaha "walkstations" like the QY10, QY70 and QY100. They are a little bit old and have a bit of a learning curve, but you can find them for less than the cost of a SQ-1 on ebay (the QY10 usually sells for about $50, the others for about $100)... If you have money to spend on a REALLY GOOD sequencer, then I'd advise you to invest on a Squarp Pyramid: it is arguably one of the best sequencers around.
      I hope this helps
      Cheers!

      Hello Mike Weakley.
      I'm preparing the last two episodes, but there seems to be a problem with sync (at least on my unit) so that the clock division apparently does not work. I promise I'll do the video as soon as I figure out this issue (and of course I'll tell you how this was corrected by then).
      Thank you for your feedback. :)
