  • San Marzano Tomatoes and why I love them!!
    These might be my new favorite tomato! San Marzano is a plum or Roma-type tomato that is great for sauces and also for homemade fresh salsa! This is our first year growing them and they are going to make the rotation in our garden every year now! And bonus they are open-pollinated so you can save seeds!
    Thanks to Honest Seed Company for setting us up with seeds this year!

      They do I'm here to tell you I just made some. Blown away the flesh is less watery than Roma's and it's more of a deep red. But I did get a lot of blossom end rot.

    I've been growing them for years. The best for tomato sauce and paste. Much larger than romas too.

    San morazano tomatoes were a gift from the viceroyalty of Peru to the king of Naples. They thrive in volcanic soil..

    Have you tried the Amish paste tomatoes? New to me this year and far surpasses the Roma - they are very large, no end rot and plants are loaded. I’ll also see if I can find the san marzanos next year

      I haven't tried those yet. I will have to get them on my list.

    Those are beautiful! Mine got BER at first and the tomatoes were tiny and I didn’t get very many. I’m pretty sure my tomato bed was too crowded and after I amended the soil (top dressed?) things improved but then we got 108 temps for weeks so now it’s kind of stalled out entirely. Ah the joys of living in the south right now! I’m going to clear out the bed a bit and maybe it’ll perk back up. It needs more space to grow! My cherry tomatoes were encroaching as were my Roma plants. 😬My bad I’m afraid. I’m learning about proper spacing and trellising still. They’re also shaded during the midday so they don’t melt in the heat which at least keeps them alive so maybe they can recover and start producing properly for the fall garden. At least I hope!

    Yo, Rick! Great! How tall does the plant get?

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  3 месяца назад +1

      They are indeterminate so they will just keep growing. Ours easily out grew our 7 foot trellis by a couple of feet by the time last season ended.

  • @lukedee7799
    @lukedee7799 5 месяцев назад +1

    Did you single stem them?

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  5 месяцев назад

      Nope that's too technical for my taste. I just let them go and prune what I can't keep on the trellis.

      Ours have been our earliest, but we did start plant them outside in mid April in Wall O waters so that gave them an early boost.

    I grew these this year for a first too, and got to eat one with tacos. They aren't juicy, but very meaty. I was surprised considering the nuts rained we've had in Ontario. Can we save seeds?

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  9 месяцев назад +1

      They are open pollinated so you can. If they are planted close to other tomatoes there will be a chance of cross pollination, but fairly slim chance.

    I have determinate San Marzano seeds that I just started for a fall crop . I have more that I will start in spring (both determinate and indeterminate). I hope mine produce as well as yours.

    Is this the determinate or indeterminate variety? I found some seeds to buy and it says it comes either way. Not sure which to buy.

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  5 месяцев назад +1

      It is indeterminate, but not super aggressive. My plants last year got maybe 8 feet tall. It was fairly easy to keep them under control with a little pruning every few weeks.

    I certainly like San Marzano but I've been fighting BER on them for several years. Skipped them this year just because of that. Maybe it is water, and not getting enough calcium uptake, I don't know.

    I dunno. Planted in May, but just not growing much and no tomatoes, but then the other types aren't doing much either. Ohio 6a.

    I tried them for 2 years with virtually no success. Some of the plants died in early July and I one got maybe 3 tomatoes off the plants that survived, and those had no taste. Maybe they don’t like my soil.

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  9 месяцев назад

      Could be your soil. Or maybe watering??

      My garden is tall raised beds filled with mostly compost, watered with a drip system on timers. I haven’t had much luck with Roma tomatoes in general. This year I’m growing Jersey Devil (Roma-type) for the first time, and so far no ripe fruit but maybe it’s a late producer. And it’s been a very weird year. I’ll try San Marizano again next year!

    Roma is a cross between San Marzano and the Pan American tomato, so no they are not Roma style.
