    Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is the most commonly diagnosed gastrointestinal disorder, affecting at least 10% of the global population. IBS is characterized by chronic or recurrent abdominal pain, associated with a change in bowel habits. Most patients can be classified, according to their predominant stool pattern, into IBS with diarrhea, IBS with constipation, or mixed-stool IBS, in which diarrhea alternates with constipation. Other symptoms may include mucus in stools, bloating, gassiness, and feelings of severe illness. IBS symptoms can be triggered by certain foods, stress, and often get worse around menstrual periods in women. People with IBS are also likely to have other disorders such as fibromyalgia, major depression, or chronic fatigue syndrome.
    IBS occurs more frequently in young adults, and affects more women than men.
    IBS is a functional disorder, meaning the bowel does not function properly, but there is no observable structural damage. It is thought to associate with problems in the communication system between the gut and the central nervous system, known as the gut-brain axis. This system not only ensures proper functions of the digestive system, but also adapts digestive activities to the body’s different physiological states. Basically, sensory nerve endings in the gut transmit information about the intestinal environment to the brain. The brain integrates this information with inputs from the rest of the body, and sends back neural and hormonal signals to control various gut activities. For example, intestinal muscle contraction is regulated so that the bowel moves food at an optimal pace, allowing the body to reabsorb the right amount of water and nutrients before stools can form.
    IBS patients often have irregular intestinal motility patterns. When food moves too fast through the intestine, less water is reabsorbed and stools become more watery. When food moves too slowly, more water is reabsorbed and constipation results. Sensory nerve endings in the bowel of IBS patients are also more sensitive, or “irritated”, producing the sensation of pain. This is known as visceral hypersensitivity.
    IBS is classified as a syndrome, meaning a group of symptoms, rather than a single disease. This is because distinct underlying mechanisms may drive disease progression in different groups of patients. Several possible mechanisms have been identified. These include:
    - alterations in brain function caused by psychological trauma, anxiety, or stress;
    - intolerance to certain foods, such as short chain carbohydrates, gluten, dairy products;
    - post-infectious changes, such as low-grade inflammation or altered intestinal permeability;
    - disturbances in the gut microbiota;
    - abnormalities in serotonin metabolism;
    - and genetics.
    It is common for IBS to result from a combination of several of these factors.
    Diagnosis is based on symptoms, but tests are done to exclude other more serious conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and cancers. The latest diagnostic criteria (Rome III criteria) include: abdominal pain or discomfort lasting at least 3 days a month in the last three months, associated with at least two of three factors: relief upon defecation, pain onset associated with a change in stool frequency, or pain onset associated with a change in the form of stool.
    IBS rarely requires hospitalization and does not increase risks for colon cancers. Current treatments aim to relieve symptoms, which, in most people, can be managed with diet, and stress reduction. Severe cases may be treated with medications.

    this condition is a nightmare. i was born with severe ibs ( constipation + diarrhea ) AND lactose intolerance. everyone tells me to just avoid specific foods, but the thing is EVERYTHING i eat causes diarrhea and pain. if i drink or eat a little fast.. boom instant diarrhea. it’s horrible and it has been this way my entire life. i can’t go to a restaurant in peace, i can’t be in the car for a while in peace. it’s even worst if i know there are no restrooms nearby.. i’m only 17 and it’s ruining my life. i just want to be able to eat and drink like everyone else without the worry of having to use the restroom and anger people around me when i have to get up to do so. my family gets upset when i have to go to a public restroom, so it adds more anxiety. i’m so tired of it. the thing is, it’s not always caused by stress either. sometimes i’ll be eating at home in peace, then 5 seconds later i have to run to the restroom.

      Well it still seems stress is the major factor here. Thing with stress is, you don't always realize you're under stress. It's an insidious pressure that breaks you up from within, but on the bright side, you can learn to control it. My advice, speaking from experience here is making a food schedule and keep yourself to that schedule from now on for at least a year or two. Eat EXACTLY at those times, minimally three meals a day - try to make all your doings predictable and according to some schedule. Your body will respond by getting used to this routine and therefore you'll be under less physiological stress, because it knows when it needs to be hungry or take a dump. Next also very important here is daily exercise.
      It took me 3 years to get noticeable results, I'm feeling a lot stronger and have more energy than ever now. I can even deviate from the schedule from time to time like waking up earlier or eat later sometime without getting nausea, bloating and air stuck in places it can't get out. I can also tolerate gluten, sugars and lactose again. No secrets here, fixed schedules and exercise is the key. But you gotta be patient.

I am on a high dose of magnesium so that's at least helping with going to the bathroom. But I do think my past, all the stress caused this. And now I have severe anxiety over this and the pain. When you can't argue to someone and made them believe it hurts, physically and mentally stressing you out. I thought it was just constipation and the food intakes but man it's also about the environment effect. Stress and anxiety plays a major role on triggering this one. Now, whenever I recall something terrible or might overthink about school activities, I end up holding and squeezing my stomach in the bathroom. I just prayed when I think I was about to faint.

    When I was a kid, I was having enormous stress due to some personal problem, at that time I used to recognise that whenever I was not relaxed and eating food at that time, I was having stomach pain. I told these things to my family and friends as a suggestion but they said they never have it. Now I understand why only I was suffering (enormous stress) and now later in life when I just completed my graduation in covid time I got severe breathing issues, after so many checkup all doctors told me that their is nothing wrong physically. So al these things are stress related. Than I thought that I will fix this or that in my life than I will feel less stress but that never happened, now simply running in the morning has resolved all those issues for me as it increase my immunity, reduced depression, improve digestion. I’ve literally been searching the internet for days now trying to figure out WTH is going on with me. Been battling this for about 2 years now. It first started out as lactose intolerance but along the line things got worse and I’m pretty convinced an extended period of stress, anxiety and trauma triggered this.
    I don’t have anyone I can talk to about it, so it’s been pretty much me and my symptoms in the dark.
    I’ve learnt to avoid certain foods that trigger it( dairy products majorly, spicy food, alcohol and a few others). Also eating late and in large quantities could spell danger.
    It sucks to have to deal with this, it gets me really anxious and irritable, and when I get really stressed it does feel like depression.
    It’s pretty annoying to think that your gut could have you anxious and depressed.
    I basically deal with mine by avoiding lactose I think it’s the major trigger for me I can occasionally have spicy food in little portions but that’s about it.
    As far as the anxiety and depression is concerned it comes in waves and I think the best way I handle is by ignoring(counter intuitive 😅).
    Focus on the positive things you’ve got going on if you don’t have anything positive create one no matter how little( buy a console, take a walk, buy a shirt, maybe get a pet etc)
    I hope this helps

    Just to let all you guys know, one may think I'm a very popular person and my life is smooth. Far from it!! It is the complete opposite. I suffer from IBS and this video has helped me greatly. Mine has resulted from fear of the future, being alone forever, stress and anxiety. It has affected all areas of my life. During my regular hospital infusion, that lasts round about four hours, I went to the toilet 12 times!! This also results from family history, circumstances and including hostile prejudice on a daily basis. I was also paranoid about chromes. Lo and behold someone said to me who actually has chromes, if you did, they would have found it in your blood test. I constantly go to the toilet more times than I count and embarrassingly, have toilet accidents in which I feel I need to wear a diaper. Just because someone may look popular on the outside, doesn't mean you know what goes on inside them. It's a disguise. It's not the real person.

      @@danjan9804 yeah I think so. Though there is a lot of pressure for us guys and even girls, that if you are not having sex, then the world thinks there is something wrong with you. This in itself, causes a great deal of pressure in an individual and also brings on symptoms of IBS. Especially if you believe in no sex before marriage or even if you didn't, because we live in such a sexualised society. This builds a phenomenal pressure and anxiety on both old and young people. But it is normally the wicked people that prosper the most and don't have these alignments, because they live their lives on the expense of others in order to succeed in life. So because their mind is wicked, they don't care, so life is easy for them. But for those who try to live a decent life, suffer from things such as IBS because we want to do good in life.

    The endocannabinoid system is involved as well, which explains why medical cannabis helps with IBS in early studies. The idea is that if we are born with deficiencies in inflammation control and few endocannabinoid receptors, then the body needs more to come from plant based sources like cannabis. The digestive system itself is full of pain relieving, anti inflammation receptors that match with cannabis.

    Ibs is a nightmare just thinking about it.
    I stay away from all the foods that they say cause it but it’s crazy how I eat normal things sometimes in very small portions and get the most unbearable abdominal pain. And I also eat things that should trigger IBS but nothing happens!! So it’s very unpredictable really !!
    The pain is usually on my middle upper abdominal area but can also shit to the sides.
    It sometimes starts with heartburn and slowly develops into bloating and the worst painful cramps. I feel like I’m too full and gassy and I can’t release any gas. No amount of water can solve the issue. It also sometimes feel like drinking water can make the situation feel worse. And then comes Constipation.
    The worst pain is when I wan to sleep or during sleep. I sometimes wake up from the pain and find myself in face down ass up position.
    I also sometimes make my self throw up to ease up the discomfort.
    It sometimes last a day or 3 days sometimes 4.
    Nothing I tried worked. The worst for me is the pain. Unfortunately it’s not like a headache, you can’t just take pain killer for it. All anti spasms medications didn’t manage the pain much for me.
    My problem with all the advices I got from doctors or saw online they don’t touch much on pain management.
    Peace and love ☮️ ❤️
    Please share your experience with me and if you relate I would appreciate some advice on pain management

      I've had it for a year, tried multiple medications but the one thing that's helped the most are probiotics. For bloating I usually drink some warm to hot water or take an antacid like gaviscon. It really gets things moving. For the pain, the probiotics have reduce the frequency and severity of the stomach cramps. Take some ginger everyday as well, it will help with inflammation.
      I do hope this helps.

      living with health anxiety and nausea fear and Emotophobia is like living in hell and thats why i hate my life and want to be over with.
      i'm just glad i'm not the only one suffering from this.

    I been diagnosed with this as I been having diarrhea for about 3 years now. Along with diarrhea I also have an unbearable pain in my stomach, it's so bad and my stomach always hurts is that a normal part of IBS? I'm starting to think the pain and discomfort in my stomach is a separate issue from the ibs

    • @Michelle_Void
      @Michelle_Void 2 года назад +4

      The stomach issue might actually be Reflux disease. I have both a tough IBS-M case and Reflux disease. Omeprazol has alleviated the unbearable stomach symptoms a lot but to this day, I haven't found anything that has helped me with my IBS. The most recent doctor I went to, after another therapy that led to nothing, basically told me that for cases like mine, that have tried pretty much everything to no avail, a diet called FODmaps is the only possible solution..😞
      Courage to everyone suffering from this awful disease!💓

      @@Michelle_Void Hey thanks for your great response sorry I didn't catch it on time! When my IBS started I did have terrible stomach discomfort, but sometime around last year it's gotten really bad it's always hurting all day and there's also cramping involved I feel something being tugged in there like a spasm.
      The diarrhea was horrible I was going to the bathroom 6 or more times daily and the diarrhea drugs I bought didn't work. I went to a doctor and he recommended Immodium for the diarrhea it's over the counter and thankfully it worked to alleviate the diarrhea but it's a temporary fix. I went to a G.I doctor they performed a colonoscopy on me and found nothing, I got frustrated. Here I am with non stop diarrhea and stomach pain and they're telling me they found nothing. Shortly after they diagnosed me with IBS-D I believe forgot which type but certainly IBS was their diagnosis.
      After the diagnosis they prescribed me a drug called dicyclomine which is a common drug they use to treat IBS. The drug didn't help I'm 6 foot 2, 240 pounds they felt cuz I'm a bigger person I may need a bigger dose so they doubled the dose and had me take 4 daily and it helps a little bit with the diarrhea but not enough and it doesn't help with my stomach pain at all which now has become a much bigger problem than the diarrhea. The diarrhea got better I could deal with it right now but it's that dam stomach pain that's killing me.
      Along with the drug they prescribed me they also told me to go on that FODMAP diet at the same time I was taking the drug until I start getting better. It's not an easy diet to follow. 3 years and still dealing with this crap 🙄 wish you good luck.
