    I have personally observed a gentleman at our club shoot one and one quarter inch three shot groups at one hundred yards and upon questioning him, he being a reloader, he stated that the seating depth of the bullet was critical in achieving it.

      The variance between the ammo types leads me to conclude something is wrong with that particular rifle. When shooting the same bullet weight with roughly the same muzzle velocity, I have never seen such a shift in the point of impact in any rifle I own, including my Mini 30. No doubt hand loads carefully developed can improve accuracy, that also seems true of any firearm, but something particular to this Mini 30 is causing a spread that cannot be explained purely by the different ammo types.

    I don't understand all the issues people are having with the Mini 30. I've bought my second one two weeks ago, and this is the first 20 rounds from the first magazine. All I did was run a bore snake down it first. Ammo is WWB from Walmart, range is 75 yards, using a 0X Mepro21 Gen 1 reflex optic. I really think most of the issues people are having are the fact they can't shoot to begin with. The first 10 shots were left by 4 inches, with an outside spread of 2". With a warm (very warm) barrel and an adjustment to the optic, my groups were all in the 10 ring (2"x4") with one flier at the edge of the 9/10 ring. Group spread was 3 inches, which leads me to believe the issues are barrel temp. My older Mini 30 responds the exact same way.

      The problem people have is they shoot junk (steel cased) ammo made for junk guns(AK's, and they're all junk!) Ruger specifically instructs you to shoot only American manufactured brass cased saami spec ammunition from them. The reason being that it's not some Russian or Chinese (or any other shithole 3rd world country) manufactured junk!

    This rifle wasnt made to put a scope on it and shoot long distance. Its a ranch rifle, you throw it in the truck and shoot coyotes and woodchucks with it. If you take a ranch rifle and hold it to higher standards its obviously going to look like a bad rifle.

      The Ranch Rifle is different the regular mini BECAUSE of scope mounts.

    I have an older Mini-30 (bought in the 70's). I have added an Accu Strut to it. With me, I average a consistent 2" group (or less). I have found that the Hornady Black SST and the Winchester Power Point work best in my rifle. I haven't tried the Zombie Max though. I may check it out. But the Power Point and the SST suit me, and my rifle, well enough to stick with either of them. No malfunctions and good enough for deer hunting in the area I hunt where all shots are 100 yds. or less.

    This brings back a lot of bad memories. I had an earlier model Mini30 and the best group I ever got was 3” at 50 yds. That was only after a ton of handload testing. Average groups with good .308 diameter bullets in handloads was 6”-8” at 50 yds. Combloc ammo at the time (early 90s) had trouble hitting a 12”x12” target at 50.
    I ended up selling it $350 and bought a new Chinese SKS ($100) that shot 2-3” groups at 100 yds with Combloc ammo.
    I really don’t think anyone could deliberately make such an inaccurate rifle if they tried.

They already have the major basics in production so they'd just have to change the barrel , the gas block and the stock. The gas block/barrel system NEEDS a redesign according to the top tier smiths who worked with me at a busy LGS.
      If they made a M14 mini replica they'd be backordered for a long time.

Mine shoots the various Barnaul produced steel case and Remington Corelokt to pretty much the same point of impact.

  • @TheRobman139
    @TheRobman139 Год назад

    The Mini-30 is a decent rifle if you are willing to accept two limitations relative to an AK platform:
    1. You are indeed limited to brass 7.62x39mm ammo, so you give up the operating cost advantage of steel case 7.62x39mm. Yes, you can mess with the hammer spring and even modify the firing pin to get better reliability with steel case, but that leads to voiding the warranty and possibly a broken firing pin that you now have pay to get fixed. So you really should just stick to brass ammo.
    2. The OEM magazines are limited to 20-round capacity versus the 30-round capacity that is standard for AKs. Yes you can get aftermarket higher capacity mags for the Mini-30 but my understanding is that they tend to be of questionable reliability and quality. And then the Ruger mags are not only limited to 20 rounds, but are expensive compared with commonly available - and solidly reliable - steel AK mags.
    As to accuracy, that seems to be a drawback that is inherent to the 7.62x39mm chambering, which is great variability from one brand to another.
    I shoot both 5.56 ARs and 7.62x39mm AKs. With the AR, I have found that at least within 200 yards, POA vs. POI doesn’t shift hardly at all between brands as long as they are of comparable bullet weight; group sizes might but zero remains pretty consistent. However, with the 7.62x39mm AK, I also see big differences between brands to where even with the same bullet weights, if I switch brands and intend to shoot the new one a lot, I must re-zero my sight. I have only found one exception to this: Serbian Belom brand FMJ shoots about the same as Polish Mesko brand, though Mesko groups a little tighter. But if I go from either of these to anything else - Tula FMJ, Tula hollow point, Barnaul FMJ, Norma FMJ, - then re-zeroing is necessary.

  • @Predalien195
    @Predalien195 5 лет назад +1

    Well, depending on how one measures accuracy and such this isnt bad. A lot of people do 3 shot groups, but as a whole I think 5 shows a bit better results. That being said though... Fiocchi, PMC, and Herters are not "premium" brands by any stretch. They may cost more than some of their steel counterparts, but not by much and often if only because they can be reloaded. Hornady is what I'd call "Premium" here... Look at those groups it put on paper. Yeah, they open up more as the Mini gets hotter, this seems to be a trait of all Mini's... But that is better than most AK's and definitely better than most SKS rifles despite what some would try to argue about them.
    I shoot a lot of Fiocchi out of mine as it's cheap and readily available, and I get slightly tighter groups than you were getting at the same distance. But as a whole your groups were pretty well represent what it's capable of in the Mini platform. Which at worst... I've found the Mini when using cheap brass to be on par with AK's, and at worst when using steel to be on par with the SKS. But when using quality brass ammo like Hornady, Lapua, Federal, etc... It's accuacy levels outshine most AK's and every SKS I've ever seen.
    When I did my testing I used Lapua as I had more than a few boxes stocked up. I was getting 1 1/4 MOA max out of a Mini-30 and that was from a field position. I dont use bench rests or anything for any of my guns, I either shoot free hand or prone in a field position. The best group I could squeeze out of an SKS with Lapua was about 3 MOA average, I had one that could get tighter but it had been worked on to be more accurate. AK's varies... but quality guns like Aresnal or Saiga rifles and other higher end AK's were capable of matching the Mini and possibly exceeding it.
    But typical more common AK's like WASR's, Yugo N-PAP or O-PAP rifles, and things like that were shooting 2 1/4 to 2 3/4 MOA with that Lapua. So, while stuff like that Fiocchi and Herters may not be the best for say... hunting. For self defense either of those would do quite excellent. That PMC stuff is straight garbage in terms of performance, availability, and etc. It's just a load I'd avoid. Like you guys I installed the Wolff hammer spring kit for better results with steel, but I have to say... Golden Bear and Silver Bear seem to be getting me the best results in terms of accuracy, reliable ignition and extraction, and cost. Although the bi-metal bullets and stuff over time will wear out your barrel much quicker, which is typically why I just use Fiocchi.

    I have always been a fan of the mini 14’s and mini 30’s. I have 5 mini 14’s that are accurate enough to hunt with and a mini 14 chambered in 6.8 that is very accurate. My mini 30 however, is another story. I’m lucky to get 3” groups at 50 yards, and that is with Hornady ammo. I have the same exact set up as they were using, a Nikon Prostaff 3-9. My mini 30 shoots great, But mine has a .625 barrel its the same size all the way to muzzle, of course, the chamber area of the barrel is thicker, but it doesn't have a tapered barrel stayed .625 all the way and it doesn't have that cut in the barrel for the gas block like the ones i see its smooth all the way down and it is a 581 series i think it might be an early model 581 the ser# 02252 but it shoots 1 to 1.5 moa at 100 yards and makes no difference if its the 3 rd shot or the 50 th shot. I don’t think that the hammer spring addition is the “be all” answer to shooting steel case ammo. From what I’ve read & watched, the factory firing pin does not protrude far enough for that ammo because the primers are seated deeper in the case. I’ve seen after mark firing pins for the mini-30. It would be interesting if you guys could investigate that as I have a mini-30 and would like to know. I’m flirting with changing the firing pin but I can’t find enough info on it. I’ve not been impressed with the mini-30’s ability to take deer consistently. I shot a deer with mine at 100+yds in the brisket as it was looking at me. The bullet did not penetrate into the body cavity. It only blew out a lot of skin. I know because I able to get close enough after that shot to kill it with my shotgun & 00buckshot. That was with Winchester SP ammo. I think it stunned it enough so that it didn’t run far and I was able to get close enough to kill it. I shot at another deer at 30yds and apparently missed it but not to say I don’t miss but at 30yds is not likely broadside from a sitting position. So, for short story long, I haven’t hunted with it since. I love the gun because I like carbines and Ruger. Let us what you can dig up.

    Now I guess you guys can do a upgrade video turning the gas system down while tuning a load with the Mini 30 if you are serious about accuracy for hunting. Other wise it's just fine for what it was built for. But just like your wolff spring video, there is lot more you can do to squeeze a little more accuracy out of the rifle. Maybe try some 1911 shock buffers in the action. Trigger job wouldn't hurt either.

    My question is all the other rifles that can fire steel cased ammo, isn't that self defeating as those steel case users are depreciating their gun's barrel's that much faster? Any rifle or firearm I'd own, I would only want to fire brass anyway.

      Something is wrong with that particular rifle and setup. My Mini 30 shoots all the ammo I have tried to pretty much the same point of impact, that's 5 different steel cased variants and Remington Corelokt that is the only brass cased ammo I have. How they are getting those variations is beyond me. That doesn't compute that ammo types can cause that much variance. My Mini 14 is as consistent as you'd expect from any firearm with different ammo too.

      @@fiveowaf454 had a hard time believing it also. For fun I sighted in a Daisy pump pellet gun with a Tasco $15.00 scope and getting inch and a half groups at seventy yards. • @fiveowaf454

      @@chrislang5659 Wild ejection pattern indicates something inconsistent going on. I put a scope on mine to get an idea of the rifle's accuracy, as opposed to what I can achieve with iron sights. I had it dialed in and then shots started going all over the place and I found the scope mounts had shot loose and the scope scope was about ready to fall off!! it was shooting about like this one :) I also found mine had at a 0.1" gas bushing in it, when the stock bushing is supposed to be 0.85 for the 18.5" barrel, so that didn't help regarding the beating the charging handle was giving the rifle, or keeping things tight. If something isn't working right, it makes sense to strip, clean and give every thing a once over, silly little things can often cause a lot of grief for the owner. Currently testing a 0.70 bushing.

You will find that it makes a lot of difference. Once you find what works best (accuracy and dependability), STICK WITH IT.

    I've had similar disappointing experiences with the .223 version of this rifle even with a custom barrel. It sucks you in with what looks like a promising group with match ammo then "bam" shoots a flyer to make a crappy group. The gas system is very reliable but consists of a very heavy block on the op rod end that when in battery rests over a gas vent outlet that extends back from the gas just block below the barrel. My guess is that design is what kills accuracy this gun. M14s (M1As) and M1 carbines both gas piston guns don't have this issue and can be made to shoot pretty well.

      There has to be something wrong with the rifle, there should not be that much variance between ammo types. I use the cheap ammo to get the sights on paper and close to a zero and then fine tune for the better quality ammo I use for hunting, the difference in point of impact for my Mini 30 is minimal between the 5 brands of ammo I have. No other rifle I own varies much either assuming the same bullet weight and approximate velocity, so there is something going on here that is not typical of a Mini 30, if that were the case, no one would be happy with their Mini 30, yet thousands are.

      Tym O'Byrne the largest appeal of buying a 7.62x39 rifle is the availability of cheap, imported ammo.
      Ruger doesn’t say ‘hey.. this gun won’t shoot that ammo you have for your sks’ in any of their ads.. you have to find that out after you buy it. Or hear it from us.
      That’s our point. 95% of the 7.62x39 ammo sold in this country is imported steel case... and this rifle doesn’t run that reliably and that’s stupid.
