Winkowski 10" setup

  • After riding mostly 8,5" decks throughout the summer, standard popsicles and a few shaped ones, I decided it would be time to ride a wide board again. I'm not much of a technical skater, so this will work for basic flip tricks and everything else I skate. The design of the deck is amazing (as Erick Winkowski himself), so is the shape and two different wheelbase options, as well as the concave Santa Cruz pressed into it. It's also a PowerPly deck, which means it's "chip resistant" or better against chipping than regular decks. I went with Indy Mids, just to try them out and see if they're any good.
    The rest you know - here comes the setup list:
    Deck: Santa Cruz - Erick Winkowski - "Birdcage" shaped, 10"
    Wheelbase: 14,5" / 15"
    Trucks: Independent Mids, 159 (52 mm tall)
    Wheels: Spitfire Conical Full, 56mm, 99A Durometer
    Bearings: Bronson G3
    Hardware: Thunder 7/8" allen key
    Griptape: MOB Grip 10"
    All parts sourced from local skate shops. Many thanks as usual to Ponke's and Lamina in Helsinki. They didn't sponsor anything - I just appreciate them and their crews!

    First impressions of the setup:
    Feels different, but sick! Changing board shapes / sizes and new trucks especially always feels odd to begin with, because your muscle memory gets a bit confused by how the pop, flick and turn changes. About the deck I can say that the tail feels oddly amazing, meaning that the double kink really cradles the back foot and allows it to lock in nicely. The pop feels weird at first but I’m getting used to it. The nose is pretty flat, but because I’m pretty basic and hardly do any Nollie tricks - that’s fine. It’s big enough for me to do nose manuals, crooked grinds and nose slides. For basic flip tricks the board works well, luckily I’m not a very technical skater though, because that thing is wide. I love the wider shape in the front of the deck, as it allows me to lock into the concave nicely with my big feet. The concave of the board definitely does some magic on such a wide board.
    Now to the trucks. The Indy Mids definitely feel different than my regular Indy Hollows or Titaniums. They feel a bit less turney if that makes sense. Maybe I just have to break them in a bit more - definitely not disappointed so far. Adjusting the bushings was a bit annoying, as you can’t see how far you’ve screwed the kingpin in, a lot of trial and error as I mentioned in the vid. The height did not affect my riding much and even though I ride 56mm wheels on the setup - I did not get crazy wheel bite. If anything it’s the same as with hollows and 55mm wheels. The conical full’s are a dream to ride btw. 99A is just the perfect durometer for me and the wider contact patch gives you grip when needed.
    All in all - I really dig this setup although it took a minute to adjust, which is normal for new dimensions. I will definitely shred this one good!

    Looks to me like the 169's would fit a little better. I run a 60mm wheel with an 1/8" shock pad. Like you, I also prefer the harder black bushings. No problem with wheel bite.

    • @MarcoEckhardt
      @MarcoEckhardt  3 года назад +1

      I wanted to try the Mids and Indy only make these up to 159. 169 would of course also fit, although they would stick out on the rear a bit. The most narrow part is pretty much exact 8,75”. Since the Mids are by far Indy’s heaviest trucks atm, I might switch them out for my 169 titaniums! But as you said, harder bushings, maybe a riser - wheelbite is no problem!

      @@MarcoEckhardt Have you noticed a difference in turning between Indy 159s and Indy 169s? I have several sets of 159 forged hollows and a couple sets of 169 hollows and for unknown reasons the stock bushings on the 159s seem way looser. I don't know why, but, 159s just seem to turn a lot better for me. If you like tighter trucks, then, maybe you haven't noticed. I even switched the bushings on the 169s to soft and then super soft, but, neither of those seemed any loser than the stock ones. I got some Stage 4 166s and those seem better. Was thinking of trying the 9" Aces, but, their pricing seems a bit ridiculous (for the AF1 Hollows). It just seems like they are over charging. Not that I can't afford it, but, it sticks in my craw.

    • @MarcoEckhardt
      @MarcoEckhardt  3 года назад +2

      I actually did put my 169 titaniums under just to ride a session and see if it’s any different. The only difference was the weight imo. 169 titaniums are SO MUCH lighter than those 159 mids. The mids are in general heavier even when compared to 159 standards. So the board felt a bit lighter for sure, yet it didn’t make a huge difference since I’m not able to do crazy technical stuff on such a wide deck! The width increase is really not noticeable, especially with such wide wheels like the conical fulls!

    • @MarcoEckhardt
      @MarcoEckhardt  3 года назад

      It’s always up to your preference tbh. 215s should fit nicely on a deck that’s 10,5”. Depends also always a little on what / how you like to ride or plan to do with the board. Boards in the range of 9”-10,5” can be fun with basically anything from 159 to 215. Deck width does not always need to be exactly matching with the axle width of the trucks - there is definitely some wiggle room depending on what kind of board feel you enjoy. I actually swapped my 159 mids to my 169s on this Winkowski setup. I generally love wider trucks - I ride 159s on my 8,5” popsicle boards because it feels nice!

Yeah...I ride basically everything that has 4 wheels on it. Each board is fun in it’s own way. I love my cruisers, mini cruisers, various longboards etc. Everything is better than walking :D And yes, I’m too old and soft to ride my normal skateboard to the park, because the hard wheels would make the fillings fall out of my teeth - that’s why I ride a longboard around town!

    Is the wider board more forgiven for beginners to land tricks safer?

    • @MarcoEckhardt
      @MarcoEckhardt  3 года назад +1

      Wider platform means easier to stand on and being more comfortable, since there is more space for your feet. That makes riding, kick turns and other tricks with both feet on the board easier in my opinion. But if you are talking about flip tricks and other maneuvers, it’s definitely harder to do those because a wider board has a higher mass to rotate.
      So depending on your skill level it might work or not. If you can already ride safely and feel comfortable on the board, you might progress quicker with a “more normal” sized deck for tricks etc.
      To give you some reference, check some of my videos where I skate. You’ll see I’m okay but not amazing. I ride regular popsicle shaped decks in sizes 8,5”-8,75” most of the time, I would ride smaller decks but my feet are size 12 (EU46) so it doesn’t feel too nice any smaller than 8,5”.
      Shaped decks like this one I ride for fun and comfort. I can do some basic flip tricks even with a 10” deck, but more difficult stuff definitely comes easier with a more narrow popsicle deck.
      Hope this helps!

      Hi! Yes only 159, 169 ans 215 Indys come with the “old” hole pattern (6 holes). I think the hollow Indys don’t have the 6 hole pattern at all if I’m not wrong.
      If I were you I would drill the baseplate. It shouldn’t weaken the baseplate, many people have done it before. Just make sure to drill them straight so your trucks don’t sit crooked. Easiest way to do that is to mount the trucks on the inner holes with 2 bolts to your deck and then mark with a pen through the front two holes of your deck onto the baseplate!

    hi, why do you use 159 indy truck for 10" deck (what the reason)?
    i lil bit confused about truck size for 10" deck according to the size chart (indy truck) because there's 159 (8.6-9 deck),169 (9-9.5 deck) and 215 (9.5-10.5 deck). i need advice from pro like you. thanks in advance.

    • @MarcoEckhardt
      @MarcoEckhardt  3 года назад +3

      Hi! Yeah it can be confusing sometimes. The size charts are usually just recommendations and can be used as general guidelines. Also, they refer mostly to popsicle decks and boards with the same width throughout the deck length.
      When it comes to these shaped boards, like the one I am setting up in this video, the measurement 10“ refers to the widest point of the deck. I also mentioned it in the video. Basically somewhere on the length of the board it is 10“ wide but not everywhere.
      At the points where the trucks are on this deck, it measures around 8,8“ and 9“, which is why 159 (8,75“ axle) and 169 (9,125“ axle) work well.
      I hope this explains it a bit better :)

      @@jayamotor3523 no problem. As far as I know, Powell makes the skull and sword (the Ray Rodriguez boards) in popsicles up to 9” (check out my 9.0 setup video - I set it up there). The 10” you are referring to should be the old school shape (the original) which is 10” wide throughout the board though. For the 10” one I would definitely recommend 169s or if you want to go wild, put some 215s on there. A good idea would be to check both sizes out at a skate shop if they have them and see what looks better, also in combination with the wheels you are going to use. Remember, if you go for wheels bigger than 58 mm (not mandatory), you might want to use some riser pads as well.

      I just meant 215s are always crazy looking because they are so large. I am guessing that you will use a little wider wheels (as common for surf skates) so you should be fine with 169s! The turn is the same in all Indys!
      If you can’t get the parts you want, you gotta work with what you have and make the best out of it. I am sure you’ll build something amazing and unique!
      I‘m stoked to hear that some of my videos help you - all the best wishes from Finland ☺️

      Yeah, also reads in the description abd I mentioned it in the clip. In this case I tried 159 Mids. Only rode those very shortly bc I didn’t like them. Swapped for regular 159s soon after!

    I could not find this board anywhere. Where did you buy it?

    • @MarcoEckhardt

      At my local skate shop “Ponke’s the shop” in Helsinki, Finland. It was the last one - but they just received two more this week if I saw right.

      @@MarcoEckhardt Buy another one if the shop still has it. These boards are going for 200 on Ebay and such. I got one at retail, but seen how much it's worth and didn't even bother setting it up. Going to be a wall hanger. I was HYPED to have it as my springtime commuter/tweener deck. But it has become a major collector's item.

    What trucks sizes? Put in this setup...

    • @MarcoEckhardt
      @MarcoEckhardt  2 года назад +2

      Indy 159, but 169 also works. Alternatives should be ACE AF1 66, Ace Classics 55, thunder 151!

      Winkowski rides 159 with this setup as well. With risers and like 60mm wheels
