Europe doesn't have 0 euro banknotes, some private company makes them and makes real money off them. No idea why you promote this pseudo-numismatic crap
There seem to be a lot of comments claiming I don't answer the question in the title - I do, a whole minute into the video... 1:02 "These are souvenir notes, originally intended to promote tourism but which have since evolved into an encyclopaedia of the continent and beyond".
In short: They are used as souvenirs that you purchase. Depending on where you buy it, it displays the location of which you were located when you bought it.
@@seetheanimal5867 you're acting like these aren't just as good of a souvenir as a postcard, or something; and it's not a fuckin scam, it literally says 0 euros on the note, nobody is gonna be fooled into thinking these have actual face value as a banknote
In the past, an alternative to this has been using legal currency coins in machines that transform them into souvenir coins with no currency value. This has the effect of destroying some small amount of currency which can be problematic. Issuing zero value currency in local patterns as souvenirs not only dodges this problem, it adds a source of profit to slightly offset currency production costs in general.
In Australia, it's quite common for the souvenir coin pressing machines to use US pennies instead of blank copper discs. Put in your $2s, and watch the machine deface foreign currencies
Here in Estonia it's like this. You insert 2€ coin and 5 cents to the machine. 2€ is a fee and the 5 cents will be pressed into souvenir coin by rotating the handle mechanically changing the shape and size of the 5 cents.
You realize that this country is attacked economically because the didn't accept a 2% tax rate and 3% income rate on their own oil? It's the oil of Venezula but Shell and others go to their government crying when they have to pay.
This reminds me of a thing we have in the USA and Canada called "squished pennies". Its a legal defacing of federal money for the purpose of printing a landmark or touristic attraction onto a penny by replacing its 1¢ value with artwork. You insert your penny at a tourist destination and it crushes the copper into a blank canvas that can have a design printed on it. This seems very similar but ours aren't government issued.
Fun fact: An architect in the Netherlands built bridges in a town called Spijkenisse that look exactly like the (supposed to be) fictional bridges on modern Euro notes, making them no longer fictional.

we have really large 5 euro coins as well. Like as big as a medal. They are made in small quantities, mostly for collectors i think, but as far as i'm aware they do actually have a 5 euro value and you could theoretically pay with it in a store.

Fun fact: Euro coins, unlike notes, do actually have different designs for different countries. That's something I found out recently and decided to comment after 1 minute into the video lmfao
it made me obsessed with coins as a kid! Each country has a couple of different designs, and can be found very far from the country they originated from. I collected a lot of them, but as we live in the Netherlands, 90% of the coins were just Dutch, German, Belgian or French. France has some of the pretter ones i think. I used to hate the belgian one with the king on it bc it was really common and it's just a lame design to have an old man on there when you could litterally have anything else (though our own coins also have the current queen or kings face on them). it's really cool to come across like an cyprus or lithuania coin though. I don't think i've ever seen/noticed one!
On the Euro coins, one side is the "common side" which is on every coin, and the other side is the "national side" which each country's central bank can put whatever they want on the coins they mint. The German coins have the Federal Eagle, the Irish coins have the Celtic Harp, the Spanish coins have the King of Spain. You can spend them in any country regardless of what country they're from. It would've been nice if they'd done the same with the notes, one side common, and the other side national, rather than having them universal.
Yes ! As kids my brother and I would look at which countries our coins were from, and establish who had the coolest coins depending on how far or exotic the countries were (for French kids like us, 1€ from Cyprus was infinitely more valuable than 1€ from France). I still like to look at my coins today and imagine how they could've come to me all the way from Slovakia or Finland.

@@akirasakuchi that's what I'm trying to say. There are special commemorative coins, but there are also places that have souvenir medals who look a lot like coins, but aren't.
These remind me of the souvenir coins I collected in Paris in 2002. This is actually genius if people actually get suckered into buying 0 notes for collecting

There was (and still is) a tradition of souvenir 'coins' in many European places, including the UK.
All euro coins have national side and common side.
Also all counties that use euro are allowed to issue special 2 euro coins that have national side changed (max 2 designs per year)
