The WA251 has been my only vocal mic for a couple years and ive had an amazing experience with it but ive definetly had some singers that the mic wasn't ideal for, usually in the form of high mid harshness on some female voices, so seeing what mics another engineer finds complementary to it is super hel0ful
I hear ya, I wish there was a desert Island Mic. I think if you have three different broad colors to paint with, you can cover most studio instrument/vocal tasks pretty well.
My goto’s are similar to yoursI -: Vanguard V13 (251 type sound) but smoother and slightly darker than the Warm -: Shure KSM32 smoother than the KSM44a -: JZ V11 (dark ribbon like character) I also use an Audio Technica AT4040 a lot as it works well on a wide range of sources. I have recently picked up a Blue Baby Bottle and this mic has surprised me. Whilst it’s new here, I can see this becoming a goto and possibly making it into my top three.
