The funniest part to me is that he didn’t even tell a joke or preface it in a joke format. His response to them politely requesting a joke was “yeah when I was 22 years old I got involved with the Russian mafia….. how’s that?” he just told them the basic premise of a story of his- there’s no joke in there And the kid innocently saying “um I don’t really get it” is very fair cause Bert didn’t even say anything remotely close to a joke and the kid was genuinely just confused and Bert seems like he thinks the kid is dumb for recognizing a guy who he probably did see on RUclips. He’s so unlikeable as more of his actual self is seen
That’s because the joke was for his audience who would watch the clip that was being recorded, not the actual kids standing in front of him. It was him eluding to his career changing bit for his fan base. Find Bert as annoying as most people in this comment section, but that was how I saw the point of that line

Shane is just naturally funny. Burt is just a guy who can tell stories, but rarely do I laugh. He's like the guy everyone wanted to party with in college because he was crazy and knew how to have a good time.
If you look into Bert's past that is EXACTLY the guy he is - the film 'Van Wilder' was based on Bert when Bert was a party animal at College. Look up the backstory and you'll find the magazine article written about Bert at the time.
Been a fan of MSSP since 2017 and Shane just keeps delivering. The 6 hour conversation with Louis CK about every single US president is likely the greatest achievement in podcast history.
There's something to be said about the fact that the more accessible Shane becomes (his relationship dynamic with McCusker, Phil, his Mom, his sister, etc.) the more we like him and see his authenticity. The more we see of Bert and his relationship dynamic with his wife and kids the more we feel bad for them and loathe him for his absolute inability to think of anyone but himself. To add, we see the way they have grown and developed with mutual friends, ie, Mark Normand, Theo, and we can all see what effect each of them has on those guys and Bert makes everyone who is even remotely grounded and real, totally uncomfortable. Or he becomes such an easy target he demands that they go against their own authenticity in NOT ripping on him in this sort of coerced way in which they're forced to protect Bert from himself and their own insults just because Bert moves with an air of almost threatening fame currency. Yea. I saw an old clip of Bert on a podcast literally crying about how much of an absent father he's been. And most of the comments were "Oh, he's such a good dad, he loves his kids so much!". I was like "are we listening to the same thing?" He's sold his soul to be in the cool kids club. He has millions. He could quit right now and not be an absent father... but getting to go to the cool kid parties, and be a raging alcoholic, is more important than being there for his kids. I get if someone has to work 60 hours per week to support their family, and doesn't get to see their kids as much. That's a father sacrificing to provide. But when you have millions, and you continue to do it anyway... Now you're just putting more money/influence/partying or whatever "benefit" you get from it over your family.

Beautiful Dogs convinced me that Shane cares deeply about the things he jokes about. He’s kind, compassionate, and empathetic. His ability to put himself in the shoes of the people around him is precisely why so many folks take his jokes so well. Because he’s laughing with you, not at you. And in doing so, inviting the audience to not only laugh along side you, but understand you as well.
It's super fascinating watching him perfectly thread the needle with his Trump material. He can make the people who love him and hate him laugh to the point of tears. It doesn't feel condescend like the late night host material

The person that did the most for Shane was Dan Soder. Soder took him on the road when Shane lived in Philly, and brought him onto the Bonfire his first week that he moved to NYC, where Shane built his initial audience. Shane was headlining small venues by the time he met Bert.

Underrated Shane Gillis trait: he’s incredibly well read, very smart, and passionate about stuff like history. He portrays himself as a dumb guy who kind of bounces through life and drinks a lot. But the smart guy breaks through in any interview longer than 30 minutes. Listen to him talk about the SNL scandal. He knew he was smarter than anyone there, or in the media so he knew how to perfectly handle it.
You could take comedy away from Shane and he could be one hell of a high school history teacher. Hell, he could even coach sports given his history. Take comedy away from Bert? You have nothing left.

I think one of the most obvious explanations for how Shane is treated is simply that he is that talented of a comedian. The exposure from Rogan just feels like it was expedited, that he shined a light on someone that genuinely has enough talent to stand on his own. Contrast that with people that give the impression they were shoved down our throats and told to think they’re funny. It’s not that they aren’t funny, but just not more funny than an average comic, but they got lucky by meeting Joe and ingratiating themselves. Shane is one of the truly talented ones that would make it no matter what. True or not, that seems to be the perception.
Shane is just naturally funny, he doesn’t try hard, he has a good flow. Burt just tries so hard which makes things unfunny, plus the machine joke is just absolutely busted at this point. Shane is a normal guy, living a high lifestyle and he knows it. Burt lives a high life and makes it everything. At the end of the day, Shane is more relatable human wise.

This video is spot on. I don’t consider Shane Gillis in the same realm as the “comedians” in the rogan verse. He’s genuinely funny and thoughtful. He can craft jokes and bits really well and has unique observations. I put him in the genuine comic realm personally.

Shane is the perfect example of the right person becoming famous at the right time (Matt should fit in there aswell). Working class kids that have life experience before they even looked at fame and entertainment. So many people get famous young, or were brought up surrounded by fame and it shapes a lot of their personality, or get famous for the wrong reasons like a select few short clips that blew up (and the rest of their shtick being mediocre). Shane actually has a significant body of work literally just doing what he loved and was already in his 30s when he really took off. If you go back and watch his old podcasts he talks and acts the exact same as he does now. Same goes for Matt in that regard.

The funniest part to me is that he didn’t even tell a joke or preface it in a joke format. His response to them politely requesting a joke was “yeah when I was 22 years old I got involved with the Russian mafia….. how’s that?” he just told them the basic premise of a story of his- there’s no joke in there And the kid innocently saying “um I don’t really get it” is very fair cause Bert didn’t even say anything remotely close to a joke and the kid was genuinely just confused and Bert seems like he thinks the kid is dumb for recognizing a guy who he probably did see on RUclips. He’s so unlikeable as more of his actual self is seen

There's something to be said about the fact that the more accessible Shane becomes (his relationship dynamic with McCusker, Phil, his Mom, his sister, etc.) the more we like him and see his authenticity. The more we see of Bert and his relationship dynamic with his wife and kids the more we feel bad for them and loathe him for his absolute inability to think of anyone but himself.
To add, we see the way they have grown and developed with mutual friends, ie, Mark Normand, Theo, and we can all see what effect each of them has on those guys and Bert makes everyone who is even remotely grounded and real, totally uncomfortable. Or he becomes such an easy target he demands that they go against their own authenticity in NOT ripping on him in this sort of coerced way in which they're forced to protect Bert from himself and their own insults just because Bert moves with an air of almost threatening fame currency.

Yea. I saw an old clip of Bert on a podcast literally crying about how much of an absent father he's been. And most of the comments were "Oh, he's such a good dad, he loves his kids so much!". I was like "are we listening to the same thing?"
He's sold his soul to be in the cool kids club. He has millions. He could quit right now and not be an absent father... but getting to go to the cool kid parties, and be a raging alcoholic, is more important than being there for his kids.
I get if someone has to work 60 hours per week to support their family, and doesn't get to see their kids as much. That's a father sacrificing to provide. But when you have millions, and you continue to do it anyway... Now you're just putting more money/influence/partying or whatever "benefit" you get from it over your family.

I honestly like this older era of Louis. He used to call out people's bs in front of them, now he just listens and let's ppl dig their own hole.
I loved Louis, loved his show. Then he started talking about have no border at all and just letting everyone walk right into the U.S. Meanwhile you know damn well if he had a couple of immigrants come into his gated community he'd be on the phone dialing 911 as fast as hit fat commie fingers could dial.
How bout him telling Joe that his self help routine is insane to average working people and they cant relate to it and Joe starts getting angry and defensive.
Shane is the kind of friend who prefers to celebrate his buddies' birthdays and accomplishments more than his own.
Thank God Burt told us that he loves being famous cause we never would have known. Shane Gillis is the complete opposite of Burt, humble, relatable, likeable and most of all he is actually funny.
The person that did the most for Shane was Dan Soder. Soder took him on the road when Shane lived in Philly, and brought him onto the Bonfire his first week that he moved to NYC, where Shane built his initial audience. Shane was headlining small venues by the time he met Bert.

Watching Bert try and fail to come up with anything close to a joke immediately after claiming to be a comedian is funnier than any joke he's ever come up with lol. You'd think with that massive comedic brain of his he would have been able to come up with something, instead he desperately just falls back to his bread and butter Machine story. Underrated Shane Gillis trait: he’s incredibly well read, very smart, and passionate about stuff like history. He portrays himself as a dumb guy who kind of bounces through life and drinks a lot. But the smart guy breaks through in any interview longer than 30 minutes.
Listen to him talk about the SNL scandal. He knew he was smarter than anyone there, or in the media so he knew how to perfectly handle it.

Meanwhile Bert got locked down with his family during Covid 2020 and could not wait to get back on the road to get away from them. Comedy is his only identity or interest

He’s funny because it’s relatable and natural. I’m so over these southern CA comedians who think they need to play a character. I don’t know what it is about Southern CA but they just cannot produce genuinely funny people. Even Bobby, love the guy bit his podcast is a character. He’s definitely a grub on real life but they feel like they need to play it up for the camera and I can’t even watch it anymore. I haven’t watched anything YMH anymore.

I think one of the most obvious explanations for how Shane is treated is simply that he is that talented of a comedian. The exposure from Rogan just feels like it was expedited, that he shined a light on someone that genuinely has enough talent to stand on his own. Contrast that with people that give the impression they were shoved down our throats and told to think they’re funny. It’s not that they aren’t funny, but just not more funny than an average comic, but they got lucky by meeting Joe and ingratiating themselves. Shane is one of the truly talented ones that would make it no matter what.
True or not, that seems to be the perception.
Normally comedians write and produce jokes, Bert really takes it a step further by being the joke himself!

Shane is just naturally funny, he doesn’t try hard, he has a good flow. Burt just tries so hard which makes things unfunny, plus the machine joke is just absolutely busted at this point. Shane is a normal guy, living a high lifestyle and he knows it. Burt lives a high life and makes it everything. At the end of the day, Shane is more relatable human wise.
That Target clip of Bert not even being able to tell a simple joke is a classic. It’s a summary of his phoniness on film. I mean, his daughters were likely the same ages as those kids at that time and - being a world-wide arena sellout comedian, as he has described himself, he can’t even tell a simple joke to those kids. Hilarious 😂

This video is spot on. I don’t consider Shane Gillis in the same realm as the “comedians” in the rogan verse. He’s genuinely funny and thoughtful. He can craft jokes and bits really well and has unique observations. I put him in the genuine comic realm personally.
Him and mark carry that squad. Joe is unintentionally funny sometimes and Ari is just there, but marks one liners and Shane’s jokes are perfect. They should start a pod

Shane is the perfect example of the right person becoming famous at the right time (Matt should fit in there aswell). Working class kids that have life experience before they even looked at fame and entertainment. So many people get famous young, or were brought up surrounded by fame and it shapes a lot of their personality, or get famous for the wrong reasons like a select few short clips that blew up (and the rest of their shtick being mediocre). Shane actually has a significant body of work literally just doing what he loved and was already in his 30s when he really took off. If you go back and watch his old podcasts he talks and acts the exact same as he does now. Same goes for Matt in that regard.
Shane (as well as Nate Bargatze) is exactly what we need right now.
