One more reason why Stewart Copeland is one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. Holy! What? He's a genius. That is all. Go back and just listen for the drums. He's is one with the kit.
💯! His drumming on this song is just *brilliant* - never showy, always driving the song forward, varying tempo and rhythm, endlessly subtle, totally in control.
All instrumentation is great, but Copeland's drumming has always been what I hear first in the layers. I could hear the influence he had on Carter Beauford the great time I heard DMB.
Yes! Drumming and bass on this track are super "punchy". Not to diminish guitar and vocals, which are also excellent, but the bass and drums really stand out.
LOL that's the sell. The viewer can relate one way or another based on their mood. Sometimes I'm happy carefree like Lex. Sometimes, I start out like Brad but lol end up like Lex! LOL
The Police have such a great sound. A band ahead of its time as this was recorded in 1979. Sting wrote this song about a castaway who a year after sending out his message in a bottle and receiving no messages thinks he’s destined to live the rest of his life alone. However, the next day, he sees "a hundred billion bottles" on the shore, finding out that there are more people like him out there. The song worked on many levels, most people at some point in their life feel alone or even sent have sent out some type of S-O-S.
I don't think the person is an actual castaway, it's just how he sees himself. The line "a hundred billion billion bottles on the shore" is him realising he is not alone, at least in his feeling of being a castaway. I have heard this song so many times, but this is the first time I really listened to the lyrics.
@@ragnari9368 Yes, as an example, I've had refugee friends tell me about feeling alone because they didn't know anyone from their culture or village in their new city. And then they'd suddenly realize that they belonged to a huge group of other refugees who were from where they were, or other places, but what connected them was that they knew that place's refugee-to-citizenship experience. So it was possible for them to sometimes feel alone, until they 'sent out an SOS' text and got together with other people on the same path they were.
"Ahead of their time" is a comment I see frequently on RUclips and I'm curious to understand what it means. I was 15 when this came out and at that time the Police seemed to fit in perfectly with the popular music landscape of the time, in the UK at least - a bit of reggae, bit of pop, a bit of new wave attitude and they appealed to rockers like me as well.
Just an fyi, their drummer, Stewart Copeland is EXTREMELY highly regarded as one of the best drummers of all time. Hard to argue with it. Sting has worked with two world class drummers. Stewart Copeland, and Vinnie Colaiuta. And that "Island Vibe", was influenced by Rush's drummer Neil Peart. Stewart talked about it in this drumming documentary I saw on Netflix, which was pretty cool.
In 1979 I saw them in a smoky night club in St. Louis. A young Pat Benetar opened for them. Still stands out as one of the best live shows I've ever seen.
I saw the Police in concert with Madness, Thompson twins, Devo this was the first live MTV tour and it kick off in Arizona.. the 80s are the BEST!!!!! I would attend at 2-3 concerts a month..
The song is about the loneliness inherent in being human. Every person thinks they're alone in being alone, while everyone is alone by nature. No matter how many people you have around you, you're always alone in your head. Existentialism.
This should be everyone's introduction to the band... it was for me ... they were so good and refreshing when they came out, so even Led Zep fans like me could enjoy something other than just hard rock... great reaction, love your channel ,thumbs up and keep it up!
They are all virtuosos on their instruments. It's the best thing watching the how they got back together around 2008, how Stewart and Sting compromise and learn to appreciate one another's differences. Both very intelligent.
The drum fill with the two off-beat cymbal/snare hits at the end of the 4'th "sending out an SOS" lines at the end of the song is one my favorites and I absolutely have to play the air drums whenever I hear it coming. 😁
Andy Summers is a hugely underrated guitarist, maybe as The Police weren't a guitar solo kind of band.Similarly Stuart Copeland is a brilliant drummer. Add Sting to the mix and it's no wonder The Police were the biggest group in the world for a few years
I won't say he is a bad guitarist, but he is a very stagnant guitarist who's style was never very popular to begin with. Others before and after him did what he could also do, but did it better and added more to the mix. Looking at Steve Howe and Mark Knopfler for example.
@@surfeit5910 well when you're talking about knopfler he is easy top 10 of all time, for me he is just behind Hendrix at the top then Gilmour, SRV, Blackmore ETC next but knopfler is right up there
first time i ever heard this song when it came out was HOLY SHIT who's this drummer. Copeland is just a phenomenal drummer so unique. His drumming just drives this song. his tempo changes in his playing is what i really love about him. one of the best ever.
I think you can tell how great a band is by their 2nd album. This was the lead-off single from the Polic's second album, and proved the success of their debut was no fluke. They were a unique blend of highly accomplished musicians that knew how to write direct, catchy pop songs.
The Police got started in late 70's during Englands punk scene. They got their name because the drummer's father was in the CIA, stationed in Endland. Sting got his name because he used to wear a shirt that made him look like a bee. They have a raggae influence,
The police have bangers. Spirits in the material world, walking on the moon, syncronicity II, wrapped around you finger, king of pain. Invisible sun is also a underated great song by them.
It’s amazing how much they accomplished in such a short amount of time. They were truly only active for 10 years (1977-86) and only released 5 albums…yet they were HUGE in that decade👍🏼
So many great songs by this band: "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", "Bring On the Night", "Driven To Tears", "Synchronicity I", "Don't Stand So Close to Me", "Spirits in the Material World", and on and on.
The Police was my favorite 80s band --- I had all their albums and played them everyday -- Their concerts were great -- Ive seen Sting a few times solo too -- I would love to see you react to The Beds Too Big Without You --- Fun facts - Stewart Copeland composed and plays all the music for the Spyro the Dragon video games and its so cool and memorable (cant get the tunes out of your head) --- Andy Summer was with The Animals for a bit and composed music for some movies --- Sting has had a phenomenal solo career and he founded the Rainforest Foundation Fund to help save the Brazilian rainforests and protect indigenous people, and has supported human rights campaigns for decades.
Love The Police. So many good tunes. Try Invisible Sun (fits in with your reaction to Bloody Sunday), Canary in a Coal Mine, The Bed’s Too Big Without You, etc. This song was performed by Sting at a charity concert for Amnesty International called “The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball” to support their work trying to get prisoners of conscience released through letter writing campaigns. Brings a whole other meaning to the lyrics.
It amazes me how Lex just rides the music, plus her explanation of different rhythm vibes at the beginning. She reeeealyyy feels and gets music spiritually.
Great opening track from a brilliant album 'Regatta De Blanc'. I've had this album since 1979 and in fact have all their albums, plus a completists box set with every track they ever recorded. Saw them live too, terrific band.
When you listen to this record, and the Rush records that soon followed, you can tell what Geddy, Neil, and Alex were listening to on the tour bus. At the time, I thought it was a travesty. Now, it is my favorite era of Rush.
That is from their second album "Regatta de Blanc". The whole album is good and it maintains a similar vide throughout but varies enough to keep it interesting. Good vibe album.
There is also the police band with the excellent drummer STEWARD COPELAND and the excellent guitarist ANDY SUMMERS and of course STING singer and excellent bass player they have several very nice songs
Thee amazing musicians way ahead of their time as others in the comments stated. A blend of reggae and punk, they blasted the 80s new wave sound. Big egos eventually broke them up but not before some monumental albums, glad you reached to this first, it's my favorite Police song.
Reggae-Rock Godfathers. Badass trio that inspired so so many bands after. No one drums like Stewart Copeland. Huge influence on my reggae-rock drumming. Good catalog of hits, and great deep cuts too! A shame they don't really get along. 😬
I played so many Police songs back then, I convinced my (Jamaican) wife back when we were dating, that I loved Raggae. The truth was, I could only name three songs...all Bob Marley of course.
Really glad I found your channel (or maybe it found me). I love how the two of you interact with eachother and your vibes always put me in a good mood. Plus, the music choices are fantastic. Give Matt Maeson - Grave Digger a Listen. I think you both will appreciate the voice and the heart in the music. So will your fans (like me).
Roxanne, Walking on the Moon from the police, Sting solo stuff: Bring on the Night both song and album. Pretty much everything is fantastic on it. Some great live stuff from it.
Anything off the first 3 albums brilliant. I am still amazed how 3 guys can get such a big sound on stage, just the 3 of them. All 3 of them virtuosos on their instruments. You just don't get that these days. The song writing arrangements. Sublime.
We were so damned lucky to have this music. 60 years old here, so I got to listen to The Police, Fleetwood mac, Led Zeppelin and Moody Blues. Steely Dan and Alan Parsons. Yes, Supertramp, Heart, Jefferson Airplane/Starship. Even the Carpenters and Elvis. So many great songs we got to listen to. So many albums to explore. It is a great pleasure to watch "First Time Listen" reaction videos. Keep up the great work. Ken
After hearing this song all my life, I've never given this song the appreciation it deserves. Seeing the lyrics as it played, though. Relatable. The Juxtaposition that Lex mentioned might be because... dude is lonely. he's throwing out messages. Finds out he's not the only one sending out messages... which gives him hope. His message needs to reach another in his same predicament. Relatable.
This was a fun reaction. I could see the wheels turning in Brad's head as he had his analyst's hat on. It is certainly complex music. It wasn't until the last sixty seconds that you began to bob to the music. Lex, on the other hand, was "feeling" the music and enjoying the ride. You complement each other so well...
Drummer Stewart Copeland is riding the dragon in this track. He is tremendous! Even John Bonham from Led Zeppelin recognized Copeland's talent. 🥁🥁🥁 If Lex likes this drum drive like in this one, she should listen to "Supernaut" by Black Sabbath.
I grew up in the 70s and 80s in Malibu, CA. Punk Rock had arrived on our glorious costal shores along with Ska Music and backed up with it's older bigger atoned brother from Jamaica and the Caribbean, Reggae Music, which are all prevalent and supported with Rock in this nautical themed Police cut. I graduated High School from Santa Monica High in 1986. "Synchronicity", the Police's Senior Class just so happened to coincide with my very own Senior year and graduation. The Police are, above and beyond, my number #1 favorite rock band of all time. Second place goes to my softer side and sentimental favorite, Tears for Fears. It's really true my friends, Everybody Wants to Rule the World!!!!!
One of my All Time Favorites songs! Great memories listening to The Police on the beach. Sting is by far one of the most talented musicians of our time. Everything he did turned to Platinum! Just a super career with The Police and his Solo career. What a voice and so talented. He was a school teacher and could be why he had such great lyrics. Real name Gordon Sumner. Great pic guys! I will say that you two have coolness and class - great combination!
Stuart Copeland is one of the greatest drummers ever. His band - The Police. One brother’s talent agency: FBI. Other brother’s record company: IRS. Their dad was in the CIA.
genius song, and why did they background the amazing guitar of Andy summers and foreground the bass, but then the bass riff is awesome. would love to remix it.
The Police is. Awesome Band... they have many excellent songs, what a great sound this is the first song I played when I learned how to play Bass guitar..The Police is a great Band, thank you for sharing guys!
You have done a couple of Police reactions - i hope if you have any free time that you watch clips of them in concert - they were a great band - i regard the drummer - Stewart Copeland as a top-10 greatest drummer in rock history. I was glad that Lex mentioned their "island vibe" - they incorporated reggae influences into a lot of their music. Thanks for your reations.
Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, Bring On the Night (serious islandy vibes), Demolition Man....just Google any of their songs because you won't be disappointed with the hits or the others that were never released. I have all their albums. Always great music!!
I was really into The Police during the time right around the mid 80s. And then Sting was going to be in Dune and he was in some other movies. I was obsessed. lol. I'm over it now. I still love their music.
I'm finding RUclips somewhat depressing at the moment, but I watched three of your reactions and I feel much better. Gonna watch some more. I love you guys.
Check out Oysterhead. It's a Super group of Stewart Copeland on drums from The Police, Les Claypool the bassist from Primus, and Trey Anastasio the guitarist from Phish. Definitely a great sound from the first album 'Grand Pecking Order'. Songs like "Army's on Ecstacy" , "Rubbernecking Lions" and "Radon Balloon".
Wish they would watch the music videos, I understand they wanna see the captions to understand the lyrics but man the videos just put it all into context. Watching the music video and seeing Copeland on the drum kit is legendary. I love the chorus "Sending out an SOS to the world". Im so nostalgic for this song as a 34 y/o lol.
damn, sorry i missed this-----OMG u guys----the police are one of THEE DOPEST rabbit holes in all of rock-----a 3 piece band, and ALL of them just ridiculously great, and gifted players, but they never did 20 minute jams, or went overboard, all their stuff is concise, and musically tight as F....holy crap, great reaction, id LUV to see more---u WILL just love them, guaranteed:)
The Police is one of those rare super trios where everyone had amazing talent, who always seemed to put out more sound than was was possible from just three guys and who were highly influential, like Cream and Jimi Hendrix Experience and Rush.
One more reason why Stewart Copeland is one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. Holy! What? He's a genius. That is all. Go back and just listen for the drums. He's is one with the kit.

Hell yeah he is. Totally underappreciated in my humble opinion. My nervous system gets tied in knots just trying to copy Copeland!
The Police were definitely one of the coolest bands, no question!
Stewart Copeland's drum work on this track is amazing.
Yes! Drumming and bass on this track are super "punchy". Not to diminish guitar and vocals, which are also excellent, but the bass and drums really stand out.
Heck yeah......thank you. I love Brad & Lex but they don't realize they are listening to a master behind the drums!!!!!!
All three members of The Police are exceptional musicians. Copeland's best track, imho, is Regatta de Blanc.
Phenomonal drummer. His work on Wrapped around your finger, Brilliant.
Crisp. Clean. But still soulful.
I love how Lex is always hyped and moving to the song while Brad always looks like he's studying for an exam.
🤣🤣🤣
even brad can't help but move to this one especially during the outro lol

Just a super career with The Police and his Solo career. What a voice and so talented. He was a school teacher and could be why he had such great lyrics. Real name Gordon Sumner. Great pic guys! I will say that you two have coolness and class - great combination!
This music was played to me as a baby by my older brother on LP vinyl. so the beat is in my head and Soul.
"The Bed's Too Big Without You" is lesser know but great
kinda reggae vibe
That is one of the best guitar riffs in history. This might be my favorite song in history. Masterpiece
amazing song!! perfect bass playing, tight, crisp. powerful drumming, and the guitar riff is perfect..!
I recommend Walking in your footsteps, Don't stand so close to me, and Synchronicity I and II from the Police.
Postpunk was a really fascinating time for music because it combined punk rock with funk and jazz and Reggae and experimental music.
The Police arguably borrowed a bit from Reggae. You must check out British Ska bands like Madness and the English Beat, and The Specials
Love you guys! You react they way I did when I first heard these songs, at the time. Keep up the good work!
Love that hat!! Where can I get one?
She's muppet dancing. 😆
Brad he looks always so serious, and lex tries not to jump each times when she moves with the beat its just so funny to watch
I have all of their records. I have been a fan of theirs since I was 10 years old!
One of my fav's by Police, great reaction guys!
The Police is. Awesome Band... they have many excellent songs, what a great sound this is the first song I played when I learned how to play Bass guitar..The Police is a great Band, thank you for sharing guys!
Brilliant band, just listen to those drums and guitar work. A very under appreciated band. They were so tight. Musically brilliant.
Always loved this song. Great beat.
It’s got that reggae/new wave thing going that the Police did so well.
Zenyatta Mondatta and Regatta de Blanc..... epic classics.... my favorite drummer
I played this so much on guitar hero the muscle memory is burned in my head
Love how the drums plays play around the bass.
Always great music!!
have to agree with you for bring on the night .. such a great track.. really great.( fantastic guitar tones/sound..)
Listen to the drums stewart copeland on
top form.
Is there anything better in this world than Lex bopping to the beat and Brad smiling along. You guys are the best
The Police is one of those rare super trios where everyone had amazing talent, who always seemed to put out more sound than was was possible from just three guys and who were highly influential, like Cream and Jimi Hendrix Experience and Rush.
