    My sister and I were going through our 95 year old Grandma's photo album and found a picture of our father. probably not even a year old, sitting in the yard looking cute. then we notice there's a rope around his waist tied to the porch. so we ASKED grandma about it. she's from Hungary and lived through the great depression. Lost her husband when all her kids were below the age of 10 and raised them HERSELF while working and never remarried. she's a tough lady. When asked about the rope her reply was: "well I HAD to do something. I was all alone and the little shit got into everything. they'd probably send me to jail now for it. " all while giggling. and to be fair my dad doesn't deny it. his stories from childhood suggest he may have needed that leash most of his life.

      In one of the William Shakespeare related houses in the Stratford area, one a large vertical support pillar in the centre of the house there is a ring around the pillar connected to another ring. Toddlers were put into the ring so they could walk around the post, watch mum working and play with a toy, but were kept safe from the fire and she could get on with her work without having to watch the child constantly.
      I can't see this (or a rope round his waist) is any different to putting the child in a play pen, a cot, a door bouncer or a push chair so you can get on with essential work for a few minutes without worrying what they are doing. Or perhaps none of those options are now considered acceptable.

      My heart aches for you. Grandparents and Aunties and Uncles are the best!!! We lost my mom's parents about 6 months apart when I was about 13, and my father when I was 16 and his father when I was 18. That was all difficult enough and I never thought I would feel anything more painful then their loss until I had my own children and then I did and still hurt for them not having them around to know and learn from. So, I do my best to incorporate things they did and tell stories about them so they can at least have little pieces of them to pass down, almost like tradition.
      There are a lot of grandparents out there though and even some who haven't had the chance to be grandparents, so adopt as many as you'd like. All parties will benefit from the experience. One can also look towards Aunties and Uncles as a substitute as well.
      Much love and many blessings to you and yours!!!!!

      @@theducklinghomesteadandgar6639 thank you for your kind words, it's very sweet of you☺️. My mom was the youngest of her siblings and the age gap with her siblings was significant so the closest grandparent figure I had was my uncle. He married my mom's sister when she was a baby so he saw her more as a daughter than a sister in law and she saw him as a father figure and when he passed it absolutely devastated all of us, he was the sweetest and kindest man and just thinking of him right now makes me tear up.
      We have a saying that a person only dies when we stop thinking of them, so in a way you keep them alive through the memories and stories you share with your children. 🙂

      @jonel filipek
      It is rather soothing!!! Did you know if you talk to your plants or even talk near them they grow better? Russians figured this out by accident.
      They had a potted plant in an office that was more long then it was wide. The desks were lined up one behind the other against one wall leaving a walkway to get to each desk. The last desk had a plant in the corner. At one point many or all of the staff were moved out of the office and the plant was left in the back corner. It was on a military base and so cleaning was still done regularly in the room.
      They had a radio up by the door that as the janitor came in and went out he had to radio in he was present and leaving as did anyone still using the office. One day the janitor noticed the plant and believed it to be dead so he picked it up to dispose of it, but set it on a table by the radio so he could notify he was leaving. He left forgetting the plant. Over the next month of coming and going the janitor noticed the plant was coming back to life.
      So they ran experiments to see if it was the talking on the radio that brought it back, by placing same age of several plants in an area where they were cared for properly but not allowed any sound. The other group was at minimum talked to also. The plants where they were talked to were bigger healthier and more productive than the plants not allowed sound.

    I'm only 61. These people remind me that the end is near. BUT it is not the destination that counts. We are all going end up at the same place. What counts is how you travel to get there. I don't want to go quietly into that dark night. I want to be celebrating like we won the NBA CHAMPIONSHIP, SUPER BOWL, ALL GOLD MDALS AT THE OLYMPICS, THE EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony Lifetime Achievement Awards) the smile and laughter from a small child, and left the world a better place for himanity. Then it is time to go.

      I'm only 62 but I know that whatever time I have left I will try and make the rest of my years count. Just started to volunteer at a food pantry and always make sure I find something for someone at a thrift shop to donate to the care shelters,VA,children's hospitals,local is a great place to start kindness will make your day. ✌🏼Hope everyone has a great safe 2021.

    I'm not surprised this grandpa loves his coloring books. They are a hit with the seniors. My 73yo mother is obsessed with coloring ever since I gave her a book by Teresa Goodridge and a set of colored pencils. She will also proudly show her works and have my brother take pictures and whatsapp them to me. She has like a 100 books by now and her enthusiasm shows no signs of slowing down. As you can imagine this hobby was very helpful during the sad lockdown times.

    My great grandma lives in Arizona, and we live in Washington (Washington state not DC). She’ll be 90 in February next year. We might go and visit her then. But since she lives so far away, we call her, she’s so cute, she always says “no we don’t say ‘goodbye’, we say ‘see ya!’ It’s happier.” If you say goodbye when you try to end the call, so usually I wait for her to say she needs to go and I listen to her say “goodbye honey I love ya!” And I correct her and go “gram, we don’t say ‘goodbye’ we say ‘see ya!’” And then we just repeat ‘see ya!’ Until one of us hangs up. She’s adorable.

    When I was little, I was on a walk with my brother, Grandma and my Papa. We were playing truth or dare and I dared Papa to stand still for as long as he could and then he would come and catch up with us when I said he could. We went all the way up the hill and I kept looking back to see when he would start to follow us. I shouted when we got to the top, “PAPA! ARE YOU COMING?” And he said, “You didn’t tell me to come!” He stayed true to his word 😊 Miss you Papa
