    What I love about this videos is, here you have a highly recognizable surf fisherman keeping it as simple as possible. He did mentioned he has a Van Staal and who else knows why high end rods and reels he may have. However he didn't give off the impression that it has to be this way or that way, or it has to be this rod and that reel . He has old tried and true equipment that he takes good care of and caught many fish with. He knows that it's his fishing skills and knowledge that is his greatest tool in his tackle box. So he doesn't sweat the rod and reel hype like many guys do. 👍🏼👍🏼

    My prize surf cast set up is a 11 ft one piece honey yellow lamiglas 1132 MB custom built for me 30 years ago by John Shauer of Fish Stix on long Island its a absolute beast of a rod and can cast to where no man has gone before, needs a big reel too I used to have a original Van Staal gold 250, number 85, made in Connecticut when they first came out. With 20 lb mono and a 3 Oz popper I could cast it insane distances to to offshore beach blitzes at Jones beach, tobay snd field 2, where no one else could reach. Haven't used it in 10 years, hanging on wall now, not near ocean any more. I miss my surf casting days on Long island

      My grandpa has one of the old GSB blanks built at the old tackle store that was in rocky point. One day I want to try it out. Thing is like 3x as heavy as a modern lamiglas though

    nothing fancy...just lamiglas with a torque or VS just a thousand dollar surf setup lol...I love all of his content though and he knows what works and what doesn't..hence having the best gear.

    • @darkcheddar6871
      @darkcheddar6871 5 лет назад

      You don't need the best gear to catch plenty of fish. What skinner has developed over time is a sense of how the minute changes in gear can affect fishing. At his level, the slightest change in how drag or action works can be felt. Thus, the need for better equipment that eliminates these minor flaws. However, they are minor.

    I just picked up the Lamiglas GSB 'John Skinner' surf rod. I ordered a Penn Slammer III 4500 to put on it, is that a good match John? I tried it with a BG 5000 and 4000 and the 4000 felt better all around, I'm fishing CCC, Rhode Island beaches/breachways/jetties, Long Is beaches/jetties/inlets and Jersey Shore...so will the SLA4500 match up well? BTW, the rod is amazing! Everyone who's seen it/cast it loves it. I looked at the Torque, but I don't have an extra $700 lying around to buy it.

    I'm getting ready to buy a new reel for the surf and was thinking about getting a Penn Torque Bail-less. But then I think to myself I should just buy five SSV6500 bail-less for the same price and have plenty off back-ups / spare parts reels. I have dunked my SSV's without any issues. I don't skish, so I can't decide if getting a Torque or the new VR are worth it in my case.

    I do the opposite, I cut the top end of the rod on a Shimano Clarus so it gets more strength and to make it shorter. LOL. On one of my Shimano rod, I use electrical tape but under it is foam padding, creating a hump where my hand lays. Yeah.

    show us how you lock your reels to the roof rack. I'm a "vacation" surf fisher and would value the advise. Thanks.

    • @chazbickel4518

      A cheap ski rack works well. $30 and holds 4 to 5 rods with the reels on .
      Easy to put on and take off your roof rack when you dont need it.

    John what brand of braid are you using nowadays ? On the Torque it almost looks like spiderwire invisibraid.

    • @lueypost6794
      @lueypost6794 9 лет назад +1

      from reading his books i believe he uses the spiderwire stealth at 30lb for open beach and something a bit heavier for inlets

      Kev Z. 20lb mono should hold up fine. 25 is ok too but a little big for spinning reels. Braid beats everything

  • @NFiltr8Red
    @NFiltr8Red 5 лет назад +1

    Lamiglas Insane Surf.. 9’M.....$120
    Penn Slammer 3, 4500.....$170
    This set will do it all, remember, if you don’t know how to fish, it doesn’t matter how good the rod/reel is.

    • @tonychau1983
      @tonychau1983 5 лет назад

      Dont you need longer rods so you can cast it out further?

    • @NFiltr8Red
      @NFiltr8Red 5 лет назад

      Tony Chau, you have to realize your Asian like me so having a 10’ft Rod is max. You have to also know how to throw too. I usually use 1-2 ounce weights and it goes 40-50 yards easily.

    In my opinion a decent older Penn Reel with a lamiglass rod is all you need. Spend money on the rod and at least 100-150 on a reel.. and when you have the cash upgrade to a Torque or VS or Zeebass.
