I want to get to Todt Hill, the highest natural point in New York City, on Staten Island. The Yellow Trail passes close to a NYPD antenna by the Saint Francis Friary.
Send him to the Staten Island "Ships Graveyard" sometime. Only NOT with an Inflatable!! There is sunken metal structure over there that would tear it to shreds!! Even here, looks like!! I've paddled the Staten Island site(Witte Shipyard), and that's a stretch in a Kayak even. CAREFUL!!
Interesting story behind this. The submarine was actually tested by the Navy and was good for depths of 600+ feet. It was the crane operator lowering it into the water that caused the mishap. Jerry Bianco, the builder of the sub, was told by the crane operator that the sub was too heavy for his crane, so Jerry and volunteers removed 8 tons of ballast from one side of the sub. The crane operator was told to lower the sub part way into the water, so the ballast could be replaced to balance the sub back out. The crane operator let the unbalanced submarine down all the way, and it rolled. The sub was eventually righted and proved to be working fine, but investors no longer wanted to back it after the initial embarrassment. It sat moored until a storm in 1975 broke it free, and it sank where it is now.
I literally held my breath hoping that some piece of sharp debris didn’t puncture your inflatable kayak.🤭 This is another reason why I love Atlas Obscura.... it gives one inspiration to discover what’s in their area. So many great stories to tell and share.💕
I've heard of and seen videos about this sub before, but it's definitely Atlas Obscura material and I'm glad to see what's become of it today, even if it's a bit disappointing. Also, it was really good to see Dylan in a video again!
I clicked on this so fast when I saw Dylan's picture. We miss you, buddy. Please, please think about coming back on a regular basis. (I guarantee you, your click count will go way up!)
I love that sub. I’m looking at it right now. Been there my whole life. Thank you for this video. The creek is actually getting better, there’s more life in it. Birds, fish.
There’s also construction vehicles buried in the sand under the shore when you walk closer to the wreckage. On the beach across the creek. The Water is very very polluted because of a gas company in the 50s dumping into the water. Also fun morbid fact the architect who designed the park was found dead in the creek. I’ve been hanging out there since I was in high school and even celebrated my 21st in quarantine there. So many more hidden gems there besides the ship graveyard.
Would love more content like this with the narrator with history and adventure/searching videos. Hope he and everyone who likes this video has seen the documentary, The World Before Your Feet.
I grew up in Coney Island. When my family came to the United states from Panama, that was one of the first places we moved to. Me and my friends used to play in Coney Island Creek. I never knew that submarine was there.
Dylan, have you been to the UFO Watchtower in Hooper, CO? I camped there for a night last summer. What a strange, fun attraction. It's also close to Great Sand Dunes National Park.
Amazing. But how could the Navy certify it for...what...600 ft...if it never sailed? Did it sail before being launched from the creek? Plus, I watched some other video, and it seems that the submarine was tried out in some sort of pool first. Does anyone have further information on this?
Very interesting topic. Always something new (old?) to learn about in NYC. Any chance of researching some of those old ships? When they were abandoned? What type of ships?
Thank you!!! I really enjoyed this video. It was helpful in my research for making my own video at Coney Island Creek. I also kayaked out to the Quester 1. Thank you.
Y'all could go to intersections and areas named in old songs to reflect on their history and how they've changed? 53rd and Third leaps to mind thanks to Dee-Dee Ramone, the Velvet Underground's "Lexington, 125" is an option and of course there is Ellington's A-train (maybe still the quickest way to Harlem, even after 70+ years?)
Have you guys ever explored an abandoned nike missile launch bay? That was always such a thrill growing up. The local one was demolished but I am sure you could find one still around somewhere.
I apologize to all the urbanites who read this, but this video does little to convince me to live in a city. Generations of filth and detritus clogging what should be a beautiful waterway.
glad you got the background story correct. Most dont. See the yellow top? some person or persons goes out and paints the top. I used to see the ship moored by the Cropsey Ave Bridge for decades before the storm ripped it from its moorings. When Covid is over, stop by the Coney Island History Project in the summer on the weekends, located on West 12 near the Boardwalk for some more nautical history of Coney Island Creek. It ends by Shell road. Some years ago, they dammed this end of the creek, placed a layer of something over the poisons embedded in the soil. then removed the dam.
Dylan you guys are awesome! BUT Please come back to South Brooklyn and explore Coney Island Creek Park again! You missed the sand dunes and tidal estuary area by Kaiser Park and Coney Island Creek Park! Come before the city builds the ferry and destroys one of BK's last wild estuaries!
Could have enter at Calvert Vaux Park (nvm you did do that), and it has a small beach area where you could have launch your kayak from. Those are homeless people behind the home depot/six diamonds park. They mind there own business. I agree it's sketchy there. I believe in 2015 a black woman was murder (could have been murdered early then that) and her body dumped near the park on Bay 44st. Her body was decomposed that the only information the had was a tattoo on her arm or leg. Pretty sad. Also a Spanish man got brutally attacked and stabbed to death last year around this time (summer 2019). There has been a few dead people found there, death unknown at times. As it was being renovated around 2011-2013 people use to have huge raves. Oh the good times Yes. I've seen people walk out there during low tide but not too close to the submarine. Definitely recommend the park, its a hidden gem of Brooklyn where you can see the Verrazano Bridge. Just don't stay there after dark there are no lights in the back and I walk my dog off leash as well as do others Next adventure should be the Forts in Breezy Point or Staten Island etc. or the Pumpkin House in the city (someone just bought it recently and they haven't started any renovations yet due to the DOB not giving out permits during COVID-19 so you may ask if you guys can film inside of it) or Hart Island or Hoffman Island
That place looks like you could have inflated your boat with exhaled crack smoke. Very interesting story. I'm on Northern Lake Huron and there are a ton of ship wrecks but we definitely don't have a submarine.
Why wouldn't the city clean that up? So disgusting! Oh, ya, talking about NYC. Sad that what could be and probably used to be a beautiful, nature oasis in the midst of a city, is so incredibly filthy and full of garbage. :-(
1. Sheep. 2. Gravesend. More likely named after Gravesend in England. Pocahontas statue Statue of Pocahontas by St George's Church, Gravesend, Kent An American sculptor, William Ordway Partridge, created a life-size statue of the 17th-century Native American princess Pocahontas, which was unveiled at Jamestown, Virginia in 1922. On 5 October 1958, an exact replica of Partridge's statue was dedicated as a memorial to Pocahontas at St George's Parish Church. The Governor of Virginia presented the statue as a gift to the British people in 1958, a gesture prompted by The Queen's visit to the USA in the previous year. In 2017, US Ambassador Matthew Barzun visited the statue to mark the 400th anniversary of the death and burial of Pocahontas in Gravesend. The Ambassador laid a floral tribute of 21 roses at the base of the statue, symbolising each year of Pocahontas' life. [45]
Swinburne and Hoffman Islands will be great to see. Along with the history of them. If you can, please get permission from the NYPD AND / OR the Coast guard.
That is a sheep’s skull. People perform a lot of sacrifice and rituals at Calvert Vaux park. The park is not too far from the creek. The creek also has a variety of good eating fish.
My son and I plan to give the submarine a fresh coat of paint next week. We gathered all the supplies and we are excited to give the old girl a fresh coat

Glad you didn't sugarcoat the surrounding environment - made it very real to imagine being there!

I like the way Dylan thinks. Beauty and secrets and history is all around us, the world around is a puzzle.
I literally held my breath hoping that some piece of sharp debris didn’t puncture your inflatable kayak.🤭
This is another reason why I love Atlas Obscura.... it gives one inspiration to discover what’s in their area. So many great stories to tell and share.💕
We had contingency plans in store if that had happened, but luckily it did not! The kayak lives another day!

He'll be back in a few videos here and there! So many things to do, so many things to see..... :)
Seeing an Atlas Obscura video in my sub box is always a treat

^ this
I feel like if this park and waterway were cleaned up, a little museum could be put in for the ship cemetery. I'd visit that!
"Scrap metal submarine" is not a phrase which inspires confidence, but if you're gonna dream might as well dream big.
Don't let your dreams just be dreams!
So good to see a video with Dylan again
Very interesting!
Wow. That was so awesome!! I love exploring places like that. Even if all you find is a weirdly shaped tree it's just so much fun.
Yes! Hidden wonder is everywhere!!
i would love to have him explore the 16 sub basements of grand central terminal
Yay! The rerun of Dylan. Thank you for continuing to inspire curiosity.
Young man this sub can still be seen from the subway. The sub belongs in the Smithsonian
Great post, AO. Thanks for going out in the skunk water, Dylan. Great story :)
I love that sub. I’m looking at it right now. Been there my whole life. Thank you for this video. The creek is actually getting better, there’s more life in it. Birds, fish.
this is literally the best video atlas obscura has ever done
i will sign up for a $10 /month patreon to get a new one of these twice a month

Lots of industries dumped they waste into the creek, not only the gas company,.
Had no idea about this. I’ll have to check it out.
What an achievement he made! A real shame he never made it to the wreck! Thanks for sharing it!
All the thrill of adventure without the diapery smell, Thank You.
Would love more content like this with the narrator with history and adventure/searching videos. Hope he and everyone who likes this video has seen the documentary, The World Before Your Feet.
Yes! That documentary is amazing- very Atlas Obscura!
I love my home city and I'm happy you do too.
We missed Dylan!

Dylan, have you been to the UFO Watchtower in Hooper, CO? I camped there for a night last summer. What a strange, fun attraction. It's also close to Great Sand Dunes National Park.
You should check out the ruins of the New York Farm Colony and the Tugboat Graveyard, both on Staten Island
Thanks for sharing your adventure! FYI, you were paddling your raft with a paddle, not rowing with an oar.
Amazing. But how could the Navy certify it for...what...600 ft...if it never sailed? Did it sail before being launched from the creek? Plus, I watched some other video, and it seems that the submarine was tried out in some sort of pool first. Does anyone have further information on this?

Nice low tide catch. Thanks!
Good too see you haven't disapeard into an office
Ahhhh the sound....so clean
Really cool. I was told about this area by one of my subscribers. I'm going to recreate this video, paddle and explore. Thank you.
So fascinating! I get it man, this gets my blood pumping and is yet more fuel for my exploration fire. Thanks for sharing this sweet piece of history.
id like to see a video about the underwater part of the statue of liberty that would be interesting if it could be done legally
Have you guys ever explored an abandoned nike missile launch bay? That was always such a thrill growing up. The local one was demolished but I am sure you could find one still around somewhere.
Paddle out to Plum island or maybe just the light house on the lesser gull island.
Well done!
I hate the condition that creek is in and would love to see it cleaned up completely
I apologize to all the urbanites who read this, but this video does little to convince me to live in a city. Generations of filth and detritus clogging what should be a beautiful waterway.
Large cities are disgusting.
I went inside one of the newer boats that was washed up on shore. Hot boxed in that mess. Dangerous but a once in a lifetime experience
Super nice video!
If not getting wet was your goal an inflatable kayak and jeans with boots wasn't the brightest idea, let me tell you 😂
I was born and raised in downtown Brooklyn maybe you can do a video on the iguanas canal

That was fun! I love the look of the submarine. It's cartoon-like and I almost expected it to say something.
Mah boi dylan! 🤗
Wow... what a story! I’m thinking that skull belonged to a dog?
:(
Me too
I thought maybe a seal!
great video!

I wouldn't even think about catching any fish in that water 😂
lived in every borough of New York but staten, my whole life and I never heard of this

Skunk skull I believe

That's not water...
that thar be an Opossum skull...thats what they look like when they are done cookin' ...JK, i can only guess what that might be
a.... *_yellow_* submarine...?
You should fish it out with a magnet.
That is a sheep’s skull. People perform a lot of sacrifice and rituals at Calvert Vaux park. The park is not too far from the creek. The creek also has a variety of good eating fish.
It was a goat. They do spiritual sacrifices there. There was a tied up goat on the news!
It's a seal skull!
Hope all of your shots are up to date. Wouldn't want to catch anything in shits creek!
My dad use to tell me him and his freinds would go on it
Old news, but cool mini-documentary.
My son and I plan to give the submarine a fresh coat of paint next week. We gathered all the supplies and we are excited to give the old girl a fresh coat
it has to have been build from the frame of an old school bus
Park looks like a good place to get jumped
Seeing him with a beard is unsettling to me idk..
I would like you guys to do a story on Dreamland en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamland_(1904_amusement_park)
Why don't they clean that place up? It's reprehensible. This isn't India.
Poor lil sub
Could you work on not using "Like" every third sentence ? You are too old to be using teenage expressions. Thank You.
