      hahaha lmao. As a Kiwi I have to totally agree with him. Going past NZ is the transition into the Pacific. Besides we always give our Aussy cousin a hard time, BTW he isn't afraid of them. Quite funny how you made a drama of his comments, so wokish of you @Florian. He would refuse to be cancelled lmao.

    Most Australian, particularly those like me that live on the east coast (Melbourne for me), agree with Conrad that Cape Leeuwin is the “runt” of the capes. Only West Australian think that Cape Leeuwin is a thing. Most Australian don’t care what West Australians think 😉

Most aussies probably haven’t any idea where the cape is located. Get a grip. Let’s have some fun sometimes . Everyone is TOO BLOODY SERIOUS these days. GO…..CONRAD.

  • @martinblyth52
    @martinblyth52 18 часов назад +12

    To a great extent he's correct. At least in terms of the Vendee Globe. I'll bet until Vendee Globe 99% of the population outside Western Australia had never heard of Cape Leeuwin (except maybe a few older sailors who knew its historical significance). And there are thousands of references through to the present day of the relief or trepidation or excitement relating to sailors rounding Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn but I don't recall any significant references to 'that great day we rounded Cape Leeuwin'. Yes sure you kind of pass by it (but miles away so no chance any Vendee Globe sailor would ever actually see it) and historically it was referred to as the dividing line between Indian and Southern oceans (but no longer) but you also pass by (and much closer on the Vendee)Tasmania and Stewart Island and they get little or no mention. So as Conrad says it's really not that significant these days - at least not with regard to VG- except as another signpost along the way which ironically would not be seen by any of the skippers!! Cheers

    The Great sailors of the Dutch East India company (VOC) used this cape as a turning point for them to head north to the spice Islands. They discovered the “roaring forties” and sailed in these latitudes with no real way of figuring longitude. They had to guess and many came to grief. Miss cape Leeuwin and you had to beat back into strong westerly winds the cape was very important to world trade for hundreds of years eventually being named by Matthew flinders well after the VOC had ceased to exist. It is as significant as all the other great “turning points”.

  • @petersmith8937
    @petersmith8937 11 часов назад

    We appreciate your concern Florian, but Australians tolerate (to the point of disdain) the immaturity of our New Zealand friends and wish Conrad all the best for his journey. Us Tasmanians are proud to honour our Dutch heritage and clearly understand the significance of our geographic location.

    But Florian like always a brillant explannation of the Cape. My father in law is a captain of Tanker vessels on the river rhine. He was working for Dutch Companies for a long time and spend a lot of time cruising in dutch Waters. For example he is a big fan ot captain Tromp and one of his ships was named after him. He always explains to me that all the World was discovered by dutch sailors and you gave a great evidence for him.😂😂😂😂

    • @davidtydeman1434
      @davidtydeman1434 15 часов назад

      The story of the discovery of Western Australia is an accident when Dutch sailors wanting to sail to Batavia (modern day Jakarta) caused to sail towards WA coast and then turn left (North) for the spice islands. There was huge rivalry between the Dutch and Portuguese for this lucrative trade. As a school student in WA the Dutch maritime history is well known

    Conrad's opinion seems very reasonable to me and I don't see what the issue is - though I haven't seen the upset it has apparently caused. From a sailors point of view sailing around the world, Cape Leeuwin is a non-entity, especially in comparison to the other two other capes, important though it may be to some.

  • @ChrisNixon-t6i
    @ChrisNixon-t6i 12 часов назад

    In essence Conrad is quite right. The Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn are visible and require a rounding whereas Cape Leeuwin is miles away unseen. Tasmania is closer to the fleet. These are more points of longitude to tick off in passing.
