I never understood why I really find myself attached to SM groups since 2013. The more I watch Umu's interviews made me realized one of the reasons why. They not only pioneered a lot of systems for Kpop as a whole, but they actually value collaborations and partnerships with artists (both starting and well-known) out there. Because of that, the scope of the music they produce is WIDE. I also noticed no SM group is like another SM group and I think they utilized their many many producers/songwriters/A&Rs to make this possible. At the end of the day, it's really about artistry and music quality, and that it the reason why SM is still in this game for so long. 🥺 Wow! The music industry is soooo deep. Thank you for this Umu! Really enjoy your interviews!
I agree. SM aren't perfect but you can't deny that they have always been pioneers in the kpop industry, they set the trend and everyone follows it, and they continue to innovate and develop all the time
This was so well said! I guess I wasn’t the only one questioning why I loved SM artists so much. I’ve often wanted to just detach myself from their groups altogether because of the amount of mistreatment. But honestly, I love the relationship of their artists with each other. I respect the company for the fact that they continue to experiment and trudge towards unchartered territory even when they know they will receive flak and, sometimes, ridicule for it. They’re consistent with their inconsistency, never afraid of tasking risks by bringing new sound that’s sometimes viewed as weird by the majority. Their take on artistry and musicality has always been unique. And I’m happy I get to be one of the people who appreciate it.
@@ninisooluv I really like the part where you said they are consistent with their inconsistency and how they would love to take risks, as long as they are serving the music industry by bringing more kinds of music to the table. And yes, I am very fortunate to experience SM's (the company's own producers and artists, and partner producers&songwriters) music
I never knew how deep and complex the music industry was until I started seeing these interviews, thanks for showing this different side to creating music that isn't shown in the spotlight as much!!
a fascinating interview! i didn't really know much about A&R before this video. the fact that an album is carefully formed to create a meaningful message and concept is so interesting! i especially like the description of a "music curator"
The only video I've seen of SM's A&R team in action was Super Junior's 'Blacksuit' comeback era , where they showed the behind scenes of the session of choosing songs for the 'Play' album :) I was so happy to know that artists get to give their feedback on various songs !

I always say this to my sister whenever we listen to a super good album (for ex. SuperM's Super One) that their A&R team are good at looking for songs that fit their artist. That it wasn't just the artist that is good but also the A&R team and other people involved in the making. I appreciated more the job of A&R when I was watching Super Junior's SuJu Returns (I think it was on Season 1&3) that they showed the process of how they selected their songs for their albums. It was then that I knew how rigorous it was to make an album for artists and how artists also have a say on it. So, hands down to them! This video really opened my eyes more on their job and effort and is very informative.
I think SHINee is really a platform for talented creators to demonstrate their skills. SHINee members pull off all the artistic aspects of every elements involved in their pieces. Those boys are the real pro idols!
So i think the rumor is right about the song switch up between f(x) and SHINee as it was a hinted by a little bit by Michelle. 4Walls was supposedly for SHINee and View was for f(x) Especially how i think Jonghyun was already writing the lyrics for View but with f(x) in his mind.
And then some youngsters keep throwing hate to SM with the same old stories like: SM doesnt give creative freedom to their artists, SM keeps their artists in caves... When SM values his artists and it's not only that they got to participate or make decissions but they xompose and write music... i wish all these people watched Reacttothek videos, learn and shut up

That is a tough job for sure. Like you have to have good instinct. Balancing between artistry and marketability, but also trying to create something new. Seems like a fun and rewarding job but highkey stressful lol
Wow that was really insightful! I did know that there's a lot of stuff happening behind the scenes, a lot of polishing but putting things into a neat perspective is real eye opening. For someone who simply sees the finished product, this makes me appreciate music more. The amount of work and passion behind it is just beautiful. Might be real demanding, but very rewarding too. I am kind of rediscovering your channel and am pleasantly supprised at how far you've come. I didn't know there was such a job in the first place... Like i've always thought producers produce songs then few songs are picked up to make an album but i've never thought of who brings producers in the first place and who picks the songs... Wow.. I'm seriously amazed. So they decide the concepts as well?? I can't really understand this part... I thought some sort of story tellers, visual artists and film makers make the concept and the storyline, i know she said "musical concept".. I don't really understand that... Do they make music and songs first then others make up the whole album concept according to music or vice versa?? Now i really need another "react to the K" but visual focused to breakdown how they make mvs and stuff like that.... Good video Umu.... I really can't wait for part 2
"musical concept" as in they send several songs that have been released by the artist in the past or by different artists, and tell the producers "we want this next song to sound like a mix of these songs!" Sometimes they suggest a movie or concept for the producers to be inspired by (like the producers for SuperM's 100 were told by the A&R that they want a Fast & Furious-esque concept before they started writing). So they basically decide on the genre/musical style for the next comeback, and then the topliners/producers write the lyrics which then creates the "concept." After the final demo is created (if it's by international writers), it's sent back to the label and the label has a Korean translate the lyrics, but sometimes they completely re-write the lyrics, changing the concept/meaning of the song! Hope that answers your question :)
